Effectiveness Of A Hospital-Based Cardiac Rehabilitation Program On Several Physiological Variables, Kristin Kaple
Effectiveness Of A Hospital-Based Cardiac Rehabilitation Program On Several Physiological Variables, Kristin Kaple
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
People who suffer from a cardiac event can greatly benefit from cardiac rehabilitation (CR). However, CR services are underutilized13. To help increase participation rates, the effectiveness of a traditional hospital-based CR program was evaluated in terms of several important physiological variables. Methods: Community-dwelling adults, age ranging from 46 to 85 years (n=10), were asked to complete a hospital-based cardiac rehabilitation program, with several variables being assessed. At the first and final visits, participants were asked to complete a 6-minute walk test (6 MWT) with baseline measures of resting and exercise heart rates (HR); resting and exercise blood pressures (BP) were …
A Case Study Of A Collegiate Intersex Athlete, Campbell Colin Query
A Case Study Of A Collegiate Intersex Athlete, Campbell Colin Query
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
This study explored the experience of one collegiate intersex athlete. Grounded in a transfeminist perspective, narrative analysis was used to tell the story of the athlete’s experiences in life and in sport. The analysis revealed several themes, which are told through a series of five vignettes. The storytelling approach illustrates how the athlete negotiates the terrain between sex and gender and how her intersex condition has affected more than just her sporting experience. The themes that were pulled from the interview covered the medical side of CAH, her personal experience with CAH, how it has affected her family, her sporting …

Where Are All The Women? The Decline Of Female Coaches Post Title Ix, Madeline Amon
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
This paper helps illustrate the decline of female coaches in the NCAA post Title IX. Before Title IX was passed female coaches coached over 90% of female athletes and currently, while female sport participation is at an all-time high, female’s coaching female athletes is not. This drop in females coaching is a serious issue that demands change. This paper calls for change within the current NCAA administrative structure. This paper looks at recent literature surrounding the issue and replicates a study conducted by Dr. Nicole LaVoi from the University of Minnesota that illustrates the issue at the Division I level. …

Development Of Circadian Oscillators In Neurosphere Cultures During Adult Neurogenesis, Astha Malik, Roudabeh J. Jamasbi, Roman V. Kondratov, Michael Eric Geusz
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Circadian rhythms are common in many cell types but are reported to be lacking in embryonic stem cells. Recent studies have described possible interactions between the molecular mechanism of circadian clocks and the signaling pathways that regulate stem cell differentiation. Circadian rhythms have not been examined well in neural stem cells and progenitor cells that produce new neurons and glial cells during adult neurogenesis. To evaluate circadian timing abilities of cells undergoing neural differentiation, neurospheres were prepared from the mouse subventricular zone (SVZ), a rich source of adult neural stem cells. Circadian rhythms in mPer1 gene expression were recorded in …

Polychlorinated Biphenyl Exposure Alters Oxytocin Receptor Gene Expression And Maternal Behavior In Rat Model, E Nicole Dover, David E. Mankin, Howard C. Cromwell, Lee Meserve
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) is a persistent organic pollutant known to induce diverse molecular and behavioral alterations. Effects of PCB exposure could be transmitted to future generations via changes in behavior and gene expression. Previous work has shown that PCB-exposure can alter social behavior. The present study extends this work by examining a possible molecular mechanism for these changes. Pregnant rats (Sprague-Dawley) were exposed through diet to a combination of non-coplanar (PCB 47 - 2,20,4,40-tetrachlorobiphenyl) and coplanar (PCB 77 - 3,30,4,40- tetrachlorobiphenyl) congeners. Maternal care behaviors were examined by evaluating the rate and quality of nest building on the last 4 …

Hiroshima And Mass Trauma Today: Treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder In Individuals And Communities, Ashley Martinez
International ResearchScape Journal
At 8:15 am on August 6th, 1945, the world and the way in which we fight wars changed forever. Immediately following the drop of the Little Boy atomic bomb, the city of Hiroshima was decimated, leaving the surviving citizens to deal with poverty, starvation, loss of loved ones, and utter destruction of their lives. After the bombing, survivors were left with burns, radiation poisoning, and physical scars. Unknown to the survivors of the atomic bombings, or Hibakusha, were the ensuing psychological and emotional damages. In 2014, we know more about traumatic experiences than in 1945. Studies from …

Q Methodology As A Tool For Program Assessment, Susan E. Ramlo
Q Methodology As A Tool For Program Assessment, Susan E. Ramlo
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Program assessment is now commonplace at most colleges and universities and is required for accreditation of specific degree programs. Key aspects of program assessment include program improvement, improved student learning, and adequate student preparation for the workforce. Thus, program assessment is a key ingredient to program health. Although surveys are often used within program assessment in higher education, this study demonstrates the weaknesses of this method and, instead, introduces Q methodology as a means of program assessment especially in the area of needs assessment. In essence, Q offers an objective way to measure subjectivity about any topic. Unlike Likert-scale surveys, …

Auditing Cpr Skills For Campus Recreation Student Employees, Rebecca Mabile
Auditing Cpr Skills For Campus Recreation Student Employees, Rebecca Mabile
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
CPR training is an important part of any collegiate recreation facility’s risk management plan for injury prevention. Because student employees are the first line of defense it is important that they are properly prepared to respond to any emergency situation. Oftentimes classroom training alone is not enough to prepare employees for emergencies. The purpose of this project was to build a training and audit program for CPR in order to build confidence and retain knowledge and skills for student employees in a campus recreation department. A training and audit program was created based on researching programs used by other universities …
The Role Of Ncaa Division I University Athletic Departments In The Transition Of Their Career-Ending Injured Athletes Out Of Sports, Kaitin Rohrs
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
The NCAA and member institutions claim the responsibility to support and protect collegiate athletes with a priority on their well-being (NCAA, 2014). Although the NCAA provides financial assistance to selected career-ending injured athletes, university athletic departments define the assistance they offer their athletes who obtain career-ending injuries before their athletic eligibility is up (NCAA, 2014). Therefore, there are no universal policies, procedures, or standards in place to ensure that each injured athlete’s well-being is supported and protected during this traumatic life event (Walsh, 2013). Due to the lack of knowledge on written policies and procedures enforced by athletic departments when …

Psychological Skills Training Manual For A Youth Baseball Team, Brian J. Guerriero
Psychological Skills Training Manual For A Youth Baseball Team, Brian J. Guerriero
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Research has supported the benefits of psychological skills training (PST) programs such as improving the cognitive processes of athletes, which in turn can improve their performance and enhance its consistency (e.g., Blakeslee & Goff, 2007; Frey et al., 2003; Thellwell, Greenlees, & Weston, 2006). A PST program can help athletes to set more effective goals, manage stress more efficiently, build self-confidence, and improve concentration (Horn, 2008; Weinberg & Gould, 2011). In this project, I developed a psychological skills training manual aimed at youth baseball players. Achievement goal theory provides the framework for this PST program. Creating a task-oriented motivational climate …

Determining The Critical Window Of Influence Of Pcb Perinatally On Behavioral And Hormonal Development In Sprague-Dawley Rat Pups, Natalie Sommerville, Lee A. Meserve, Howard C. Cromwell
Honors Projects
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) had widespread use in the United States in commercial manufacturing in the United States until the late 1970s. Even though they were banned, measurable amounts can still be found in the environment and food sources. PCB has known effects on altering hormone development and behavior in the species Rattus norvegicus. To determine the most crucial developmental time of exposure to PCB in Sprague-Dawley rat pups, rat pups were exposed to PCB at differing weeks of either gestation period or the first postnatal week. Behavioral tests were performed for the different rat pups, as well as blood …

The Relation Between Couple Communication And Work-Family Conflict, Klaudia Konik
The Relation Between Couple Communication And Work-Family Conflict, Klaudia Konik
Honors Projects
In studies examining work-family conflict, much of the attention has been focused on control at work (Radcliffe & Cassel, 2014). The purpose of the study was to examine the relationships between couple communication at home and experienced job satisfaction, relationship satisfaction, and overall work-family conflict. Though hypotheses specifically examining communication frequency were not fully supported, post-hoc analyses revealed unique relationships between specific communication patterns and skills and work-family conflict, especially when examining family-to-work influences. Suggestions for future research to examine the benefits of teaching communication skills at work and how they may impact work-family conflict are also discussed.
