Burt Lake Watershed Planning Project: Biological Management Plan, Jenna Lyons Aug 2016

Burt Lake Watershed Planning Project: Biological Management Plan, Jenna Lyons

Honors Projects

In order to provide a management plan for Burt Lake, a survey was conducted from July to August in which potential habitat was surveyed for the reintroduction of Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens). This was done so by evaluating physical parameters of Burt Lake and the surrounding tributaries, presence and absence of invasive plants and unknown algae, and presence of crayfish. For sturgeon habitat, sediment and physical properties (light, temperature, pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, conductivity) were sampled on 14 sites in Burt Lake . Similar measurements and samples were also taken in 3 sites on each of the surrounding tributaries, with …

Assessing Spanish-Speaking Children: A Comparison Of International Practices, Alexis Decker Jul 2016

Assessing Spanish-Speaking Children: A Comparison Of International Practices, Alexis Decker

Honors Projects

According to The National Center for Educational Statistics, 7.7% of all public K-12 students in the United States (US) speak Spanish in the home, representing 76.5% of all English- language learner (ELL) students (2013). Children exposed to two languages are referred to in the literature as ELLs, language minorities and/or bilingual children. As these children enter school, language disorders and differences may become apparent to the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP). It is the responsibility of the SLP to determine whether a disorder exists or if what is being observed is simply an issue of language difference. As such, it is important …

Cheating On Unproctored Internet Intelligence Tests: Strategies And Effects, Wim Bloemers, Arjan Oud, Karen Van Dam Jul 2016

Cheating On Unproctored Internet Intelligence Tests: Strategies And Effects, Wim Bloemers, Arjan Oud, Karen Van Dam

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

A crucial issue concerning unproctored Internet-based testing (UIT) of cognitive ability is its susceptibility to cheating. Whereas evidence indicates that cheating during UIT occurs, there is still little information about possible cheating strategies and their effects on (sub)test performance. Using a randomized experimental design, this study investigated the direct effects of cheating on an Internet-based test of cognitive ability by comparing test performance of cheaters (participants who were instructed to cheat) and successful cheaters (participants who thought their cheating had been successful) with that of non-cheaters. Successful cheaters obtained substantially higher scores compared to cheaters who thought they had been …

The Influence Of Juncus-Rhizosphere Dissolved Organic Matter On Coastal Plankton Communities, Brittany Zepernick, Robert Michael Mckay, George S. Bullerjahn, Jeffrey W. Krause, Behzad Mortazavi Jun 2016

The Influence Of Juncus-Rhizosphere Dissolved Organic Matter On Coastal Plankton Communities, Brittany Zepernick, Robert Michael Mckay, George S. Bullerjahn, Jeffrey W. Krause, Behzad Mortazavi

Honors Projects

Many aquatic plants produce copious amounts of dissolved organic matter (DOM) which enters surrounding waters and potentially stimulates planktonic activity. In the northern Gulf of Mexico, Juncus roemarianus (i.e. black needlerush) is a dominant marsh grass species residing in coastal zones and barrier islands. The below-ground biomass i.e. rhizosphere, can be consistently submerged, serving as a potential source of DOM to the surrounding waters. The lability and possible stimulatory effect of J. roemarianus DOM was examined for three plankton communities collected within the discharge region of Mobile Bay and adjacent waters of Gulf Shores, Alabama (less affected by Mobile Bay). …

Using Augmented Feedback To Decrease Patellofemoral Pain In Runners: A Pilot Study, Lauren M. Cornwell, Christen C. Kelly May 2016

Using Augmented Feedback To Decrease Patellofemoral Pain In Runners: A Pilot Study, Lauren M. Cornwell, Christen C. Kelly

Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association

Objective: Patellofemoral pain (PFP) is a common injury in running. The cause of patellofemoral pain is multifactorial in nature, which results varied treatment approaches for this disorder. Many studies have examined the effect of using strengthening protocols targeted at subjects’ hip and quadriceps strength. Although these studies have resulted in a reduction in short-term PFP for runners, many continue to experience PFP after undergoing these treatment strategies. A more recent theory regarding the treatment of PFP in runners involves the use of augmented verbal and visual feedback. This treatment strategy involves giving the runner scheduled visual feedback to adapt …
