Navigating Leadership: A Qualitative Exploration Of Challenges And Coping Strategies For Women In Sport Management Education, Rachel Silverman, Shanon Kempt, Nita Unruh
Navigating Leadership: A Qualitative Exploration Of Challenges And Coping Strategies For Women In Sport Management Education, Rachel Silverman, Shanon Kempt, Nita Unruh
The COSMA Journal
Abstract
Women remain significantly underrepresented in senior leadership roles in higher education, a disparity that is particularly pronounced in male-dominated disciplines, such as sport management (Chance, 2023; Lozano et al., 2023). This qualitative study examines the challenges faced by women in leadership positions within sport management education and the strategies they employ to overcome these barriers. Thirteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with biological females holding leadership roles at both teaching- and research-focused institutions. Participants ranged in age from 32 to 74 and had between one and twenty-four years of leadership experience. Using thematic analysis, key challenges identified included male-dominated work …
Ditch Tradition...And Move To Case-Based Learning, Emily Dane-Staples
Ditch Tradition...And Move To Case-Based Learning, Emily Dane-Staples
The COSMA Journal
Recent criticisms of higher education include a lack of relevance and alignment with what employers are seeking in new hires. A lecture-based approach to teaching has proved less effective than other active learning strategies and does not adequately mimic the working environment sport professionals face. To better align the classroom and the workplace, a case-based learning approach can be used. This pedagogy blends high impact practices that have been demonstrated to assist students in knowledge acquisition and soft skill development by replacing traditional lecture and chapter readings with real-life scenarios that require student engagement with concepts in application. The technique …
Tv Versus Video Games: Their Distinctive Effects On Adolescent Behavior And Academic Achievement, Faiaz Rahman, Kathy L. Schuh
Tv Versus Video Games: Their Distinctive Effects On Adolescent Behavior And Academic Achievement, Faiaz Rahman, Kathy L. Schuh
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
The current paper uses data collected from a publicly available, nationally representative data set to examine the effects of TV viewing and video gaming on adolescent behavioral problems and cognitive achievement. Results revealed that extended hours of TV viewing were associated with greater anxiety/depression and antisocial problems. On the other hand, extended hours of video gaming were associated with higher reading comprehension scores. Differing effects of TV viewing and gameplay by an individual’s sex was also found during the analysis. It is also important to note that the opposite effects that the two media has on outcomes, indicate that, although …

The “Geography Of Opportunity” In Flyover Country: A College Match Case Study, Sabrina C. Gregersen, Joanna Full, Meghan Ecker-Lyster
The “Geography Of Opportunity” In Flyover Country: A College Match Case Study, Sabrina C. Gregersen, Joanna Full, Meghan Ecker-Lyster
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
In previous studies of college match, specifically undermatching and its far-reaching consequences among traditionally underserved students, students’ geographic proximity to postsecondary institutions (particularly those with which they match) has not always received much consideration. As it stands, the scholarly consensus on college match is not representative of students who live far from regions that are rich with college options of all levels. We evaluated the college match outcomes of 334 high school graduates from a public school district in the Midwest that has a relatively low concentration of colleges nearby. We categorized college match using student competitiveness based on GPA …

Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Educators report feeling overwhelmed by shifts in their working conditions and responsibilities since the pandemic, leading to significant levels of burnout and reduced professional satisfaction. Beyond traditional instructional roles, teachers are increasingly expected to serve as first responders to students’ wellness needs, manage complex behavioral issues, and provide ongoing emotional support. While teachers’ instructional practices, ability to manage classroom dynamics, and engagement in leadership roles evolve over time, findings here show that their well-being and approach to supporting students’ wellness needs shift across different career phases as well. This study examines, via a mixed methods approach, how K-12, full-time, U.S. …

Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Background: This study examined the integration of formal debriefing in athletic training clinical education, addressing a gap in understanding its role during the transition to professional master's programs. It focused on how formal debriefing can bridge the shift from traditional learning models, ensuring effective student learning and knowledge application in diverse clinical scenarios. The study specifically explored the perceptions of preceptors and students about the incorporation of debriefing in a Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education accredited athletic training program.
Methods: This qualitative study used a purposive sample of five preceptors for an accredited athletic training program with training …

Effective staff collaboration in schools maximizes educators’ collective capacity, improves educator and student outcomes, and facilitates school-wide improvement efforts. Yet, many school team members struggle to collaborate effectively. Previous studies have demonstrated individual and school-level factors that influence school-based collaborations. This study expands former research by comparing the varying administrative and environmental tools employed by two schools to shape relational networks and foster interpersonal capital. Specifically, this case study explores how school-level factors shape the development of school social networks and staff collaborative behavior. We use comparative case study analysis to explore how differences in individual-level and system-level factors influence …

Relational Online Teaching: Connecting With Students At A Distance, Laura Sheets, Robert J. Snyder
Relational Online Teaching: Connecting With Students At A Distance, Laura Sheets, Robert J. Snyder
University Libraries Faculty Publications
Relational teaching pedagogies place the connection between instructor and student at the heart of student learning. These practices can include creating community, designing interactive learning experiences, and recognizing the student as a whole person. But in an online classroom, relational pedagogies must be woven into the course design and the instructor must be intentional about their desire to connect with students. In this article, the authors will demonstrate how they applied the Five Good Things from Relational Cultural Theory to an asynchronous information literacy course in order to connect with students in an online learning environment.

Exploring Leadership, Culture, And The Dynamics Of Collective Empathy: A Nonprofit Case Study, David L. Harkins, Deborah A. O'Neil
Management Faculty Publications
This case study explores the formation, embedding, and sustainability of collective empathy at [Healing Arts for Children; HAC], a pseudonym for small arts-focused nonprofit serving pediatric patients. The 20-year-old organization utilizes art and music to alleviate anxiety and enhance positive health care experiences for critically and chronically ill children and their families. While the existing literature primarily focuses on individual-level empathy in the workplace, this study focuses on the underexplored aspects of systemlevel empathy applications, which may be essential to determining how empathy forms, embeds, and sustains within an organization. Collective empathy, the shared capacity of organization members to recognize, …
Leading And Learning From Inside Out: Insights From Meditative Inquiry, Jody L. Rebek
Leading And Learning From Inside Out: Insights From Meditative Inquiry, Jody L. Rebek
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
This article explores our modern world and our role in shaping collective experiences. By our thoughts, choices and behaviours (our character), we influence our shared reality. Higher education has an imperative responsibility to engage students ethically and develop their character. I offer a teaching metaphor and case study to meaningfully develop students’ self-awareness of character via an undergraduate leadership course. I employed the ‘seed’ metaphor to illustrate how nurturing students’ self-awareness and agency mirrors the growth of a seed within a carefully cultivated ecosystem. Each contemplative practice (character development) intertwined with leadership content (competence and confidence), serves as essential nourishment, …
More Than Marketing: The Role Of Emotional Intelligence In Social Media For Medical Tourism, Yawei Wang
More Than Marketing: The Role Of Emotional Intelligence In Social Media For Medical Tourism, Yawei Wang
Visions in Leisure and Business
The medical tourism experience is increasingly shaped not just by clinical quality and cost, but also by how patients emotionally connect with their providers. The journey begins long before they ever step foot in a medical facility, which is often far from home. Social media serves as a powerful interface for prospective patients to evaluate care, communicate needs, and gain reassurance. This manuscript proposes a conceptual framework that integrates Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence (EI) model with the Uses and Gratifications Theory (UGT) to explain how medical tourism providers create value through emotionally intelligent online communication. Based on qualitative analysis of user-generated …

Visions in Leisure and Business
Medical tourism is a rapidly expanding industry, with an increasing number of patients traveling abroad for medical treatments and procedures. This trend is expected to continue as the industry evolves to meet shifting patient demands and preferences. People are motivated to seek healthcare outside their home countries for various reasons, such as access to advanced technology, faster treatment, higher quality care, or more affordable options available in the destination country. Patients today are more informed and selective about their healthcare choices. They seek not only cost-effective treatments but also high-quality care and an exceptional patient experience. The future of medical …

Visions in Leisure and Business
Health and medical tourism are a very complex set of issues. This issue of Visions cannot address this issue of complexity, but there are three primary dimensions. They appear in a number of articles that are directly related to the future of health and medical tourism. These three issues are data, cooperation, and barriers. These are not interrelated concepts, but will have an impact upon future considerations. In addition, to these basic issues, the dimension of agencies that are involved is highly diverse. This perspective reviewed some of the basic structures to gain a greater understanding for further discussions and …

Exploring How Potential Medical Tourists Engage In Ewom On Reddit, Katey A. Price
Visions in Leisure and Business
Medical tourism is an increasingly popular form of travel as well as lucrative business as access to healthcare services varies drastically from one region to another. Individuals who are interested in travel, and specifically medical tourism, are using electronic word of mouth to connect with others who have experience in this form of travel. This research explores how potential medical tourists actively engage in information-seeking through the social media platform Reddit. Analysis of original posts showed that when seeking information from experienced medical tourists, potential medical tourists provided reasoning and context for wanting to travel to seek medical services and …

Social media technologies have played a significant role in most people's lives in recent years. It has significantly changed the way we do business, form relationships, etc. The health and tourism industry has been significantly changed with the new technologies. It is not only from a client perspective, but also from infrastructural relationships among administrators, doctors, nurses, etc. This is also greatly reflected from a cultural perspective. It is obvious that two of the outstanding elements in helping to understand the impacts of social media are cognitive and emotional factors. Emotional factors play a significant role in social media, and …

State Parties’ Self-Reported Adherence To Article 31’S Right Of The Child To Play: A Systematic Content Analysis, Richard Smith, Caroline Bond, Francesca Woods
International Journal of Playwork Practice
Article 31 of the introduction of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) legally protects children’s right to rest, leisure, play, recreation, and cultural and artistic activities. Concerns for the adequate realisation of Article 31 have been longstanding, with the right to play particularly requiring greater attention. This research aims to understand how states are self-reporting right to play observance within the wider context of Article 31 rights. A systematic content analysis was completed with relevant sections of 174 state party reports using Article 31 domains and General Comment 17 factors as an evaluative framework. The …

I'M Okay Being Square In A Round Hole: A Black Feminist Autoethnography Traversing Workplace Oppression, Sense Of Self, And Resistance, Maria A. Duffy
Master of Arts in Media and Communication Plan II Graduate Projects
Although Black women are an important part of the U.S. workforce, they continue to experience discrimination at the workplace. Prior research has examined Black women workers’ resilience and strength (e.g., Allen, 2020; Ross et al., 2020; Woods-Giscombe et al., 2023). Researchers also have explored different types of institutional and interpersonal discrimination that have harmed Black women---especially those with white collar jobs (e.g., Bloch et al., 2021; Patton, 2010; Weiner et al., 2019). However, more research is needed on how discrimination at blue-collar workplaces can affect Black women’s intrapersonal communication, self-concept, and co-cultural communication. In this project, I explore the intersectional …

Narrative Inquiry As Contemplative Methodology, Lauren A.H. Brown
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
This reflective essay describes how contemplative practices, including mindfulness, presence, deep listening, contemplative reading, free writing, visualization, bearing witness, and loving kindness, were engaged during my doctoral research study. As a novice researcher but experienced practitioner, contemplative practice guided my research and creative processes, allowing me to present a deeper understanding of the participants in my study while simultaneously bringing a heartfulness to my ethical decisions. While it is not uncommon for researchers to draw on their existing skills in mindfulness and other contemplative practices, I propose that contemplative practice is central to narrative inquiry research, making it both a …

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
Vulnerability to negative mental health outcomes (i.e. anxiety and depression) among DI collegiate athletes may best be understood using Self Determination Theory (SDT) and the framework that need frustration impairs autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Need frustration may also relate to negative mental health symptoms via higher ruminative thinking, known to relate to both need frustration and poor mental health. The present study tested these two path models (i.e., SDT need frustration components [autonomy, relatedness, competency]-->rumination facets [problem-focused thoughts, counterfactual thinking, repetitive thinking, anticipatory thoughts]-->mental health problems (one for depression and one for anxiety as outcomes) among 341 collegiate …
