Preceptor Facilitated Debriefing Improves Athletic Training Student’S Clinical Performance And Work Efficacy, Jordan J. West, Kara L. Kraus, Kirk J. Armstrong
Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association
Debriefing is an essential part of healthcare training that utilizes a planned conversation to allow clinicians to analyze their actions, thought processes, and emotions with the goal of improving patient care and outcomes. Debriefing requires two-way communications between the athletic training student and facilitating preceptor. The process is more than providing feedback on clinical performance, but a communication process that fosters reflective insight into of behaviors and decisions. Debriefing after patient care encounters has been shown to increase critical thinking, confidence, clinical skill and clinical reasoning. With this enhancement in cognition and behavior, debriefing allows the student to strengthen their …

Idiopathic Proximal Tibiofibular Joint Laxity In A Collegiate Baseball Player: A Case Report, Stephen A. Cage, Brandon J. Warner, Diana M. Gallegos, Phil Stevenson
Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association
Objective: Present a clinical case detailing the assessment and management of a collegiate baseball player suffering from symptomatic laxity of the proximal tibiofibular joint. Background: Injuries to the proximal tibiofibular joint are rare, and generally accompanied by some form of trauma. Typically, dislocations of the proximal tibiofibular joint occur in an anterior direction, and require reduction and possible fixation as a first course of treatment. Treatment: A 20-year-old collegiate baseball player reported to the athletic training clinic complaining of idiopathic lateral right knee pain. The patient could not recall a mechanism, but recalled an insidious onset of pain that …

Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association
Background: Concussions are one of the foremost issues in sport, with football having one of the highest incidence rate of injury. Moreover, there is a need to monitor sub-concussive head impacts because they do not initiate further assessment which may increase an athlete’s risk of suffering a brain injury. The purpose of this article is to discuss the viability of use for the Reebok CHECKLIGHT™ system and its correlation to concussive events screening in two levels of football: youth recreation league football (ages 11-13) and high school football (ages 13-18). Results: The Reebok CHECKLIGHT™ system activation did not correlate with …

Conflicted: An Autoethnography On Researching The Minority Swimming Gap, Dawn M. Norwood
Conflicted: An Autoethnography On Researching The Minority Swimming Gap, Dawn M. Norwood
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
In this research note, I use an autoethnographic method to undertake the task of uncomfortable reflexivity to address the intra-conflict of being a Black woman researching the minority swimming gap, who, like my research participants, struggles with hair maintenance to engage in swimming activities. My uncomfortable reflexivity moves from stages of confession, self-discovery, catharsis and a plan to incorporate deeper reflexivity in future research and other academic practices. Reflexivity in qualitative research is used as a methodological practice to give validation and legitimacy to a research study. Oftentimes, a qualitative researcher will do a bracketed interview to become aware …

Swimming Through The Waves: Black Collegiate Swimmers And Their Experiences, Tiffany Monique Quash
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The current generation of collegiate Black swimmers attending either a historically Black college and university (HBCU) or a predominantly white institution (PWI) have witnessed Black swimmers excel at the collegiate and elite levels of swimming. Using an interview case study method, a semi-structured protocol was employed to interview three participants concerning family history, their swimming history, the meaning of inclusion by exploring stereotypes and expenses (cultural, financial, and emotional), the ramifications of being a collegiate swimmer, and being a Black swimmer. The participants of this study discussed the significance and intersectionality of race/ethnicity and the complexities of competitive swimming. Noting …

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Globally, and in the United States, drowning is considered a “neglected public health threat” (WHO, 2014b). Reports have shown that there are groups of people in certain communities who are at greater risk. African Americans, as a group, have a drowning death rate 9% higher than that of the overall population, with the greatest disparity being among African American youth (Gilchrist & Parker, 2014). While many national programs and organizations present water safety awareness and drowning prevention efforts within communities, very few offer multi-sectorial collaborative efforts (WHO, 2017a) among culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) aquatic stakeholders designed to empower, promote, …

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
This study examined the management of aquatic venues in a number of areas (facilities, programming, human resource management, marketing, policies) as it pertains to LGBTQ participants and participation. The study utilized in-depth semi-structured interviews with 16 aquatic managers to examine steps that are currently being taken (or lack thereof) when it comes to creating environments that are perceived to be open, or closed, to LGBTQ participants. A grounded theory-based process of data collection and analysis resulted in emergent themes. These themes included: (a) gendered spaces, (b) non-aquatic initiatives, (c) staff knowledgeability, (d) departmental and organizational mission, (e) aquatic-specific programming and …

Childrearing Stages And Work–Family Conflict: The Role Of Job Demands And Resources, Kei Nomaguchi, Marshal Neal Fettro
Sociology Faculty Publications
Objective
The authors examine the role of job characteristics in influencing variation in mothers' work–family conflict by childrearing stage.
Background
Although researchers generally contend that having younger children is related to greater work–family conflict, examination of this association is limited.
Method
Using data from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (N = 774), we conduct fixed effects models to examine variations in mothers' job characteristics across four waves when their children are 6 months old, 15 months old, third graders, and fifth graders and their links to variations …

Developing And Implementing A Community-Level Para-Swimming Program, Mariett Teixeira Matias, Milena M. Parent
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The purpose of this study was to examine the basic conditions required to implement a para-swimming program at the community level. This was undertaken using a qualitative benchmarking approach based on documents/literature and semi-structured interviews with representatives from 13 countries as well as from the International Paralympic Committee’s Agitos Foundation. Results indicate that successful community-level para-swimming programs should focus on promoting the inclusion of para-swimmers in swimming clubs, with integration being a step towards inclusion. The basic conditions needed to do so include facilities and logistics, financial, and human resource needs. Findings also highlight the importance of the local context …
Navigating Rough Waters: Public Swimming Pools, Discrimination, And The Law, Steven N. Waller Ph.D., Jim Bemiller Jd
Navigating Rough Waters: Public Swimming Pools, Discrimination, And The Law, Steven N. Waller Ph.D., Jim Bemiller Jd
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Historically, swimming pools have been a focal point of racial tension. Discrimination and segregation are inextricably tied to the history of public swimming usage in the United States. Pools are public spaces that are physically and visually intimate. History has revealed that both de jure (enacted through the law by the government) and de facto (occurs through social interaction) discrimination have contributed to segregatory practices in the United States. The purpose of this article is twofold: 1) to examine the social pattern of discrimination that has stymied the growth of swimming in communities of color in the United States; and …

Modeling Initial Participation Of Diverse Communities In Competitive Swimming, Dane W. Wolfrom, Emily J. Murray, Angela M. Dominguez
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
This research note introduces the Initial Participation Model, which theorizes continued participation in a activity or group before individuals make commitment is a function of: enjoyment, feeling of inclusion, and/or involvement opportunities. The specific focus of this research is investigating how deficiency in enjoyment, feeling of inclusion, and involvement opportunities may discourage continuing participation in competitive swimming by underrepresented populations such as African American, Black, Hispanic, Latino, Native American, Pacific Islander and low-socioeconomic communities. Details explain how initial participation differs from other sport stages by emphasizing participation; relating to program instead of sport; and resetting each time an individual joins …

Reestablishing A Culture Of Water Competency At An Hbcu, Knolan C. Rawlins
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
African American children ages 5 – 19 years drown in swimming pools at rates of 5.5 times higher than those of whites (Gilchrist & Parker, 2014). Literature suggested culture is the culprit for this disparity. A fear of water dates to slavery (Pitts, 2007). After slavery was abolished, the memory of drowning remained part of the African American culture. In the twentieth century, the popularity of swimming grew with the increase in public pools. The era of the Jim Crow laws kept African Americans out of public pools (Pitts, 2007). Although the political landscape has shifted since the Jim Crow …

Religious and spiritual struggles (R/S struggles)—tension or conflicts regarding religious or spiritual matters—have been robustly linked to greater psychological distress and lower well-being. Most research in this area has relied on samples consisting predominantly of participants who believe in god(s). Limited research has examined R/S struggles among atheists, generally conflating them with agnostics and other nontheists. This study investigated the prevalence of R/S struggles among atheists and compared atheists to theists in two samples (3978 undergraduates, 1048 Internet workers). Results of a multilevel model showed that atheists experience less demonic, doubt, divine, moral, and overall R/S struggles than theists, but …

Exit, Voice, And Public Reason, Kevin Vallier
Exit, Voice, And Public Reason, Kevin Vallier
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Public reason liberals appeal to public deliberation to ensure that a legal order can be publicly justified to its citizens. I argue that this voice mechanism should be supplemented by exit mechanisms. By allowing citizens to exit legal orders they believe cannot be publicly justified, citizens can pressure states to change their laws. This exit pressure is sometimes more effective than deliberation. I explore federalism as an exit mechanism that can help public deliberation establish a publicly justified polity.
