Head Depth And Head Speed During Competitive Backstroke Ledge Starts, Wesley J. Manz, Joel T. Greenshields, Brian V. Wright, Curtis S. Goss, Benjamin C. Skutnik, Joel M. Stager

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Recently, a commercially available starting ‘ledge’ designed to reduce foot slippage during the execution of the backstroke start was introduced in competitive swimming. For the purpose of identifying potential safety consequences, the present study investigated the effect of ledge use on head depths, speeds, and distances in backstroke starts of athletes with no prior or only novice familiarity of the ledge. Competitive backstroke starts were performed with and without ledges by high school-aged (14.5 to 19.2 yr, N = 61) swimmers in 1.52 m of water during a closed testing session. A SIMI Reality Motion System in a calibrated space …

Negative Impacts Of The Beef Industry: Lab-Grown Meat, Stephanie Grass Aug 2019

Negative Impacts Of The Beef Industry: Lab-Grown Meat, Stephanie Grass

WRIT: Journal of First-Year Writing

The beef industry is harmful to the environment and human health and alternative solutions must be implemented in order to mitigate the effects of climate change. Water and grain are used in agriculture in abundance despite the negative environmental effects it causes. Cattle are the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in the sector, also contributing to climate change. Antibiotics are used in large quantities without regard to potential future consequences. One potential solution for this problem is lab-grown beef, which demands very little from the consumer and would take pressure off the environmental issues the beef industry creates. Lab-grown …

Mental Illness Stigma, Devine Lewis Aug 2019

Mental Illness Stigma, Devine Lewis

WRIT: Journal of First-Year Writing

Mental illness stigma is a national issue prevalent due to common misconceptions of mental illness presented in media and entertainment outlets. The stigmatization of mental illness causes the increase of mental patients refusing to seek treatment, it prohibits the advancement of psychological science, and causes discrimination and prejudice towards the mental health community. Solutions to this issue include prioritizing awareness and advocacy for this issue as well as educating the general public with relevant and correct information/representations relevant to the mental health community. The increase of social interaction with mental health patients decreases the stigmatization of mental illness as does …

Marijuana Issues For Voters: Studying Issues Us States Have Had With Legalizing Marijuana, Kody Kesler Aug 2019

Marijuana Issues For Voters: Studying Issues Us States Have Had With Legalizing Marijuana, Kody Kesler

WRIT: Journal of First-Year Writing

In the United States, the legalization of medical and recreational marijuana in individual states, rather than the whole nation, is a great example of states being “laboratories of democracy.” Legalizing marijuana in the states first is essential to deciding how to go about the issue on the national level, once Americans are ready for it. In most states where it is legal, employees can still be fired for having marijuana in their system, even if they have a medical recommendation. The drug tests that employers use don’t test for the recent use of drugs like marijuana, but for a part …

Parental Support, Sibling Influences And Family Dynamics Across The Development Of Canadian Interuniversity Student-Athletes, Georgia I. Lundy, Veronica Allan, Ian Cowburn, Jean Cote

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

A vast body of research focuses on the role of parents in athlete development; however, little is known about developmental influences of siblings. In general, family dynamics (i.e., patterns of relating or interacting among family members) have yet to be investigated in youth sport contexts. This study examines how family dynamics and the individual roles of parents and siblings influence the development of Canadian interuniversity student-athletes over time. Participants included four male and six female student-athletes. Each participant took part in a qualitative retrospective timeline interview. All data was subjected to a thematic analysis. Results indicate that siblings and parents …

Ncaa Division I Athletes’ Engagement In Educationally Sound Activities: A Review Of The Research, Eddie Comeaux, Rebecca E. Crandall

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

Today’s academic support centers will have to forge a more authentically responsive approach to address the needs of intercollegiate athletes in U.S. higher education. This approach must include new and different ways of thinking about all athletes and the quality of their educational experience. This article presents findings from a review of a steadily growing body of research on the benefits of educationally sound engagement activities for Division I athletes. The review indicates that participating in purposeful engagement activities enhances athletes’ personal and academic self-concept and their collective learning and communication skills. These academic-related activities for athletes are conditional on …

Women's Lacrosse Players’ Perceptions Of Teammate Leadership: Examining Athlete Leadership Behaviors, Attributes, And Interactions, Jennifer L. Gellock, Eric Ekholm, Gregory P. Greenhalgh, Carrie W. Lecrom, Christopher S. Reina, Ravi S. Kudesia

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

Athletes fulfill both on the field (task) and off the field (social) team roles. For this reason, recent research on athlete leadership has concluded there is no one best type of athlete leader. In the current study, role differentiation theory was applied to investigate how peers perceive teammate leadership roles and behaviors within a women’s lacrosse program at a NCAA Division I university. Each player (N = 30) participated in a survey in which they were tasked with rating every teammate on the following leadership behaviors: technical, interpersonal, and contagious energy. Individual player attributes of were also considered in …

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

Many factors are associated with a person’s attitude formation and intention towards a behavior. In this study, we examined organizational factors that helped form young athletes attitudes regarding their future plans in high performance sport. Through a mixed method survey design, data was collected from 207 young pre-elite athletes who competed during the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games in Bahamas. Several organizationally controlled aspects of the games environment were found to contribute to young athlete’s satisfaction with the event including their accommodations, available information regarding their sport and finally, the social and cultural activities during games-time. However, satisfaction with the games …

Predicting Gambling Situations: The Roles Of Impulsivity, Substance Use, And Post-Traumatic Stress, Joshua B. Grubbs, Heather Chapman Jun 2019

Predicting Gambling Situations: The Roles Of Impulsivity, Substance Use, And Post-Traumatic Stress, Joshua B. Grubbs, Heather Chapman

Psychology Faculty Publications

Gambling disorder and symptoms of post-traumatic stress are highly comorbid. Numerous studies suggest that the presence of one (either disordered gambling or post-traumatic stress) substantially increases the odds of later developing the other. However, little is known about the etiological links between these two domains or the nuances of the comorbidity. Past research has suggested that symptoms of post-traumatic stress might be related to unique motivations for and beliefs about gambling. The present work sought to examine whether or not symptoms of post-traumatic stress might also be related to specific situational vulnerabilities to gambling behaviors. Using a large cross-sectional sample …

Criminal Justice Involvement And Young Adult Health: The Role Of Adolescent Health Risks And Stress, William M. Clemens, Monica A. Longmore, Peggy C. Giordano, Wendy D. Manning

Sociology Faculty Publications

Background: Although some studies have found that incarceration is associated with young adults' poor health, confounding factors including adolescent health risks, and mediating influences such as stress have not been examined in the same study. We assessed whether variation in criminal justice system experience (none, arrest only, incarceration) influenced young adults' self-reported depressive symptoms and poor physical health after accounting for prospective risks to health including adolescent health risks. We then assessed whether stress mediated associations between criminal justice involvement and the two health indicators.

Methods: Data are from Toledo Adolescent Relationships Study (TARS) (n =990), which included young adults, …

In 2017, the United States Department of Health and Human Services declared a national opioid epidemic. As a result of widespread prescription and non-medical use, the opioid crisis has had devastating impact on Ohioans, including college aged adults. Bowling Green State University took action in 2018 to address the opioid epidemic by hosting a university-wide Teach-In focused on opioids, “Changing the Story.” The Teach-In included engagement of faculty, community members, administration, staff, and students to increase knowledge of resources and connect the population with secondary prevention and treatment services. The Teach-In resulted in the development of an original film and …
