Sharing The Journey: Museums And Culinary Tourism, Paula J. Johnson
Sharing The Journey: Museums And Culinary Tourism, Paula J. Johnson
Visions in Leisure and Business
Museums and historic sites have incorporated food-related material into their exhibitions and programs over many years. The extent to which culinary content draws tourists is difficult to pinpoint, but organizations have found that food-related exhibitions, programs, and events resonate in important ways with travelers and local residents alike. In the past two decades, more museums have moved beyond simply adding food and drink components to their programming calendars, and have built entire initiatives around food research, collecting, and public engagement involving critical issues such as migration, cultural representation, equity and accessibility, and environmental sustainability. The American Food History Project at …
Virtual Culinary Tourism In The Time Of Covid 19, Lucy Long
Virtual Culinary Tourism In The Time Of Covid 19, Lucy Long
Visions in Leisure and Business
As the COVID-19 pandemic closed borders and shut down travel in 2020, culinary tourists have turned to virtual experiences for satisfying their curiosity about new foods and tastes. Individuals as well as industry professionals have focused their energies on cooking shows, cookbooks, food memoires, blogs, and both formal media and informal social media. These activities represent a philosophical approach to tourism as a state of seeing or attitude that represents the humanities-based definition of culinary tourism as "eating out of curiosity" rather than the more industry-driven one of food-motivated travel to a destination.
These virtual formats may be reaching a …

Has A Pandemic Provided An Opportunity For Food In Tourism?, John D. Mulcahy
Visions in Leisure and Business
This is an autoethnographic perspective, informed by my experience over four decades as a practitioner, policy maker and academic. The primary thrust of my argument is that, within the wider tourism industry, food in tourism is integral across all sectors, markets, and populations with enormous and sustainable social and economic potential. Realising that potential requires a shift beyond the existing traditional tourism paradigm that is based on narrow economic objectives. The pandemic may have created a tipping point, forcing that paradigm to shift to holistic, collaborative, and sustainable objectives reflecting fresh societal, cultural, environmental, and economic concerns. It is therefore …

Looking Over Our Shoulders At Disaster, Brent Rosen, Elizabeth M. Williams
Visions in Leisure and Business
In a journey spanning almost 20 years the Southern Food & Beverage Museum has become established as a solid and reliable museum and attraction in New Orleans, Louisiana. Its journey to established museum has been fraught with disaster and determination – from Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the financial crisis of 2008, the BP Oil Spill, and COVID - to more local disasters like floods and hurricanes. Today it is ready for whatever may happen, as well as prepared with a plan to pivot, innovate, and re-invent itself, all the while deepening its mission and continuing to be the Southern Food …

We’Ve Got A Moat, And We're Not Afraid To Use It: Culinary Tourism, Borders, And Tasmania, Nicole Tarulevicz
Visions in Leisure and Business
For the first two years of the Covid-19 pandemic Australia had restricted national-borders. Tasmania, Australia’s island-state, added addition restrictions to its state borders. National and state controls had significant impacts on tourism and hospitality, especially culinary tourism. The state of Tasmania attempt to stimulate the sector with vouchers for Tasmanians to travel within the state. The opening of borders to inter-state travelers has been quite disruptive, causing an increase in Covid-19 cases, affecting business and consumers. Additionally, many Tasmanians have limited their activities, although restrictions have been lifted. In this piece I trace our experiences, as a family living in …
Isolated Destination: Life In Western Australia In The Time Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Cecilia Leong-Salobir
Isolated Destination: Life In Western Australia In The Time Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Cecilia Leong-Salobir
Visions in Leisure and Business
Western Australia, the largest state covering a third of the landmass of Australia has escaped much of the morbidity and deaths of the COVID-19 pandemic. This was made possible due to its draconian measures in keeping the virus at bay through interstate and border closures and high vaccination rates. Domestic tourism has flourished as West Australians, unable to travel outside the state spend their dollars on visiting local attractions. Restaurants, cafes, bars and fast food outlets also do a roaring trade for the same reason.
Mass – Market Us – Caribbean Cruise Travel During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Implications For Culinary Tourism, Shayan S. Lallani
Mass – Market Us – Caribbean Cruise Travel During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Implications For Culinary Tourism, Shayan S. Lallani
Visions in Leisure and Business
Culturally themed dining is a popular offering on mass-market cruises operating in the US- Caribbean market, with companies often marketing these experiences as opportunities for immersion in societies perceived as foreign. The COVID-19 pandemic impacted every aspect of cruise ship dining. As an intimate activity that brings people together through the sharing of food and culinary memories, dining on cruise ships as it was pre-pandemic is no longer feasible during a global event that asks people to stay apart. Cruise lines and authorities responsible for regulating the industry have implemented important safety measures to protect passengers and crew onboard, as …

A Curiosity About Links Between Adventure Playgrounds, Loose Parts, Playwork Approach, A State Of "Flow" And Children’S Wellbeing, Angus Ian Gorrie
A Curiosity About Links Between Adventure Playgrounds, Loose Parts, Playwork Approach, A State Of "Flow" And Children’S Wellbeing, Angus Ian Gorrie
International Journal of Playwork Practice
Over the past century there has been a documented rise in childhood anxiety and depression (Gray, 2011; Twenge, 2001). This increase largely correlates to the significant decrease in the amount of time children have to play freely (Gray, 2013). The suggested reason for this is a decrease in free time and play creating a strong external locus of control, the result of which has been shown to cause increases in childhood anxiety and depression (April, Dharani, & Peter, 2012; Gray, 2013). This paper records a practitioner’s musings on the links between aspects of playwork practice and children’s wellbeing. It considers …

An Examination Of Campus Engagement And Gpa For Latinx College Athlete, Guillermo Ortega
An Examination Of Campus Engagement And Gpa For Latinx College Athlete, Guillermo Ortega
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
Despite the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s focus on improving outcomes among college athletes, research has overlooked Latinx college athletes. This paper focuses on how campus engagement with peers, faculty, administrators, and athletic staff are positively related to GPA among Latinx college athletes. I used an ordinary least square (OLS) regression model to examine the relationships between engagement and Latinx college athletes' GPA. The findings suggest that high school GPA, participation in class, and faculty-student interactions were significant for Latina/o college athletes' GPA. Additionally, interactions with teammates and coach were both significant predictors, but team interactions had a slight negative effect …
Relationships Between Athlete Activist Identities And Resilience In College Athletes, Travis R. Scheadler, Robert J. Reese, Marc L. Cormier
Relationships Between Athlete Activist Identities And Resilience In College Athletes, Travis R. Scheadler, Robert J. Reese, Marc L. Cormier
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
Many high-profile athletes have engaged in athlete activism and continued to remain successful both in sport and activism. Although several barriers have been documented preventing athletes from engaging in activism (e.g., public criticism, status and job loss, withdrawal of funding, anticipated distress; Cunningham & Regan, 2012), activism itself has also been connected to several positive outcomes (e.g., improved confidence, self-concept, belief in change, agency, life meaning; Klar & Kasser, 2009; Rabkin, McElhiney, Harrington, & Horn, 2018). Indeed, both sport and activism provide opportunities for athlete activists to develop resilience. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to examine the …

They’Re Just Here For Ball: Proposing A Multi-Level Analysis On The Impact Of Collegiate Athletics At Historically White Institutions On Black Male Collegiate Athlete Holistic Identity, Trajuan Briggs, Allison B. Smith, Joseph Cooper
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
As the overrepresentation of Black male collegiate athletes (BMCA) increases in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I (DI) revenue-generating sports, coaches and athletic staff continue to overemphasize sport performance, while graduation rates for BMCA remain persistently lower than their peers and research continues to document transition out of sport concerns for this population. Proposing a multi-level approach, we explore the collegiate athletic factors that influence the holistic identity development of DI revenue generating BMCA at historically White institutions (HWIs) leading to difficulty transitioning out of sport. At the macro-level, the NCAA and its policies on eligibility are analyzed. At …

Technological advances have allowed improvements in genome reference sequence assemblies. Here, we combined long- and short-read sequence resources to assemble the genome of a female Great Dane dog. This assembly has improved continuity compared to the existing Boxer-derived (CanFam3.1) reference genome. Annotation of the Great Dane assembly identified 22,182 protein-coding gene models and 7,049 long noncoding RNAs, including 49 protein-coding genes not present in the CanFam3.1 reference. The Great Dane assembly spans the majority of sequence gaps in the CanFam3.1 reference and illustrates that 2,151 gaps overlap the transcription start site of a predicted protein-coding gene. Moreover, a subset of …

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Improved eating behaviors and daily participation in physical activity such as swimming might abate the likelihood of African American youth becoming obese. Yet many African American youth neither consume the recommended daily servings of nutritious foods nor know how to swim. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of a culturally tailored multicomponent summer intervention to reduce obesity and unintentional drownings among underserved African American youth. Children (n = 145) participated in a three-hour, community-based intervention for four weeks. Measures of children’s attitudes perceived behavioral control, and subjective norms toward swimming, nutrition, and physical fitness were …

This Way Or That? Par Ici Ou Par Là?”: Language In The Theme Park, Florian Freitag
This Way Or That? Par Ici Ou Par Là?”: Language In The Theme Park, Florian Freitag
Visions in Leisure and Business
Language and its multiple forms and functions in the theme park have only received scant attention in cultural and media studies-oriented theme park scholarship. In both written and oral form, however, language not only constitutes an integral part of the pluri- or multimedial mix that makes the theme park a hybrid, composite, or meta-medium, but also offers visitors a large variety of information on safety, park operations, and theming. Using examples from parks in both the U.S. and Europe and drawing on such theoretical concepts as paratextuality and "linguistic landscapes," this essay suggests a tripartite approach to studying the complex …

This article explores race differences in the desire to avoid pregnancy or become pregnant using survey data from a random sample of 914 young women (ages 18-22) living in a Michigan county and semi-structured interviews with a subsample of 60 of the women. In the survey data, desire for pregnancy, indifference, and ambivalence are very rare but are more prevalent among Black women than White women. In the semi-structured interviews, although few women described fatalistic beliefs or lack of planning for future pregnancies, Black and White women did so equally often. Women more often described fatalistic beliefs and lack of …

Getting In: Safe Water Entry Competencies, Kevin Moran Dr, Jennifer Blitvich, Lauren Petrass, Keith Mcelroy
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
In high income countries, jumping and diving into water are a small but persistent cause of death and serious injury especially among male youth and young adults. Although water entries maintain a high media profile, little is known about what entry competencies and underlying water safety knowledge youth bring to this practice. Undergraduates enrolled in aquatics (N= 76) completed a survey before attempting 7 entry jumping and diving tasks. While safety attitudes and self-reported behaviours were generally good, considerable variation in practical entry competence was evident. Most completed a deep-water compact jump (87%) and PFD jump (88%) with …

Perceptions Of Water Competencies, Drowning Risk And Aquatic Participation Among Older Adults, Teresa Stanley, Kevin Moran
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
New Zealand has an aging population and, despite falling drowning tolls in all other age groups (WSNZ, 2019c), older adults have continued to drown in both increasing numbers and proportion. The reasons for this are not well understood since very little drowning research has focused on older people. A water safety survey (N = 389) seeking information on older adults’ aquatic recreational practices and perceptions of safety was conducted at the end of the summer season, 2019. Most adults (86%, n = 335) reported some aquatic activity in the previous year, but those aged 65+ years (66%) were significantly …
