Master of Arts in English Plan II Graduate Projects
This portfolio contains three analytical works and a lesson plan for a college composition course. The first piece analyzes technology and the Internet and discusses how the ideas presented in M.T. Anderson’s dystopian novel Feed can apply to our world today. The second piece analyzes J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit as a piece of children’s literature and considers how one may use this novel to help teach college students how to write children’s literature. The third piece analyzes the social media trend of fitspiration (fitness inspiration) and discusses the impact this has on viewers and what can be done about it. …
Pars Playwork: Considering Who We Are Becoming And Why, Janine Dodge
Pars Playwork: Considering Who We Are Becoming And Why, Janine Dodge
International Journal of Playwork Practice
The PARS model of playwork practice was developed by Dr Shelly Newstead from research into the origins of playwork from the adventure playgrounds set up in the UK just after the Second World War. This article considers why and how this theoretical model of playwork as a form of professional practice is now being applied and developed by practitioners in Brazil, contributing to the creation of an international ‘community of practice’ (Wenger et al, 2002). It describes how PARS’ underpinning philosophy and model of practice provide a strong foundation that values playwork and supports the development of a shared language …
A Pan-Canadian Comparison Of Cyanobacteria Bloom Management Policies, Programs, And Practices, Rebecca Gasman
A Pan-Canadian Comparison Of Cyanobacteria Bloom Management Policies, Programs, And Practices, Rebecca Gasman
International Conference on Toxic Cyanobacteria (2022)
Across the globe, reports of cyanobacteria blooms are on the rise. The increasing occurrence of cyanobacteria blooms and cyanotoxins is attributed to phosphorous (P) loading, climate change, among a mix of other factors. While eutrophic lakes have a higher risk of blooms, oligotrophic and mesotrophic lakes are also experiencing blooms. This means governments’ need to develop a robust cyanobacteria management strategy (prevent, control, and mitigate) to protect public health. In Canada, water management is a shared responsibility among the federal, provincial, and local governments; however, cyanobacteria management is mainly a provincial and local government responsibility. This research compares and contrasts …
Securing The Future Of Democracy Through The Continued Education Of "Divisive" Concepts, Rachel Larsen
Securing The Future Of Democracy Through The Continued Education Of "Divisive" Concepts, Rachel Larsen
Honors Projects
Research shows that social studies education should be about more than just teaching standards to a test. The curriculum should be integrated with student life, to prepare them for a future of participating in our democracy. House Bills 322 and 327 would directly prevent these efforts and further alienate students of color and LGBTQ+ students. Students should be included and feel welcome in the school building, considering they will spend the majority of their childhood learning there. A preferred policy alternative to the two House Bills would be to draft legislation that protects divisive concepts, provides training for teachers and …

Teacher Education Programs Of Top Pisa Scoring Countries, Stephanie Kafer
Honors Projects
This research paper aims to investigate the teacher education programs of four different countries that have consistently scored high on the international Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) test. This project intends to answer two questions: What locations consistently perform high on the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) test? What do the teacher training programs look like for these locations and are there commonalities between programs of different locations? The first question is answered using statistics of PISA scores from the past twenty years and from those statistics, the top four countries that this paper focuses on are Finland, …
Animal-Assisted Play: A Strategy For Promoting Children’S Physical Activity Play, Jennifer A. Boisvert, W. Andrew Harrell
Animal-Assisted Play: A Strategy For Promoting Children’S Physical Activity Play, Jennifer A. Boisvert, W. Andrew Harrell
International Journal of Playwork Practice
This article explores how animal-assisted play might be used as a strategy in playwork to support children’s right to play, enrich their play experiences, encourage their physical activity play and better their health and life quality. Children’s interactions with pets or companion animals in free play or animal-assisted activities (AAA) can yield therapeutic benefits by increasing physical and mental health and well-being and also offer possibilities for more outdoor play, agency, risk-taking, fun and enjoyment, as well as high-quality play experiences. We invite playwork practitioners to consider the important role of animals in children’s lives and the potential value of …
Developmental Outcomes Of University Female Basketball Athletes As Participants In Peer Mentoring Groups, Jonathan Kroll, Kathleen Mcmillian-Roberts
Developmental Outcomes Of University Female Basketball Athletes As Participants In Peer Mentoring Groups, Jonathan Kroll, Kathleen Mcmillian-Roberts
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
Peer group mentoring can stimulate developmental outcomes for university basketball athletes. Seven female university basketball athletes from an NCAA Division III team participated in peer mentoring groups over the course of an academic year. By sharing about their lived experiences, the researchers were able to capture narratives that illuminated the impact of this developmental relationship. Thematic analysis was utilized to explore these descriptions and collate them into findings relevant for athletes, coaches, Athletics administrators, and others. Findings presented below indicate that these peer group mentoring experiences (a) nurtured synergistic relationships; (b) cultivated athletes’ resilience; and (c) developed athletes’ self-efficacy

Why The Philanthropic Donations Of Wealthy Individuals Are Not As Great As We May Think, Alyissa Horn
Why The Philanthropic Donations Of Wealthy Individuals Are Not As Great As We May Think, Alyissa Horn
Honors Projects
Largely overlooked when it comes to nonprofit organizations and their influence in society are the practices and influences of wealthy donors. Throughout history, wealthy individuals have been able to find immense amounts of influence through the donation of their wealth to the nonprofit sector. As individuals, we struggle to be critical of a sector that creates such an immense amount of good. However, this article pushes readers to ask: “What are the true motivations of wealthy donors?” Through a critical analysis of the philanthropic practices of Andrew Carnegie, who is often credited with the start of modern-day big philanthropic giving, …

Virtual Culinary Tourism In The Time Of Covid 19, Lucy Long
Virtual Culinary Tourism In The Time Of Covid 19, Lucy Long
Visions in Leisure and Business
As the COVID-19 pandemic closed borders and shut down travel in 2020, culinary tourists have turned to virtual experiences for satisfying their curiosity about new foods and tastes. Individuals as well as industry professionals have focused their energies on cooking shows, cookbooks, food memoires, blogs, and both formal media and informal social media. These activities represent a philosophical approach to tourism as a state of seeing or attitude that represents the humanities-based definition of culinary tourism as "eating out of curiosity" rather than the more industry-driven one of food-motivated travel to a destination.
These virtual formats may be reaching a …
Has A Pandemic Provided An Opportunity For Food In Tourism?, John D. Mulcahy
Has A Pandemic Provided An Opportunity For Food In Tourism?, John D. Mulcahy
Visions in Leisure and Business
This is an autoethnographic perspective, informed by my experience over four decades as a practitioner, policy maker and academic. The primary thrust of my argument is that, within the wider tourism industry, food in tourism is integral across all sectors, markets, and populations with enormous and sustainable social and economic potential. Realising that potential requires a shift beyond the existing traditional tourism paradigm that is based on narrow economic objectives. The pandemic may have created a tipping point, forcing that paradigm to shift to holistic, collaborative, and sustainable objectives reflecting fresh societal, cultural, environmental, and economic concerns. It is therefore …
Teaching Food Tourism In Ireland-Reflections From Covid-19, Ziene Mottiar, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire
Teaching Food Tourism In Ireland-Reflections From Covid-19, Ziene Mottiar, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire
Visions in Leisure and Business
This paper is a reflection of the development of a Food Tourism module over the last 5 years in TU Dublin with particular focus on the impact of COVID on pedagological strategies. The module emerged as a reaction to an environment in which tourism, and food tourism, was being identified as increasingly important and on the program team there was a desire to provide students with different perspectives of food. A key element of the module is interaction with industry, via guest lectures, case studies and a field trip. COVID-19 had a significant impact as teaching and learning pivoted online. …
