Cbpr And A Multitrack Model Of Development: A Proposed Critical Ethnography, Jeanette M. Dillon
Cbpr And A Multitrack Model Of Development: A Proposed Critical Ethnography, Jeanette M. Dillon
Graduate Communication Association Conference (2015)
The modernization paradigm of development still dominates in practice, according to Sparks (2007), and apparently, that is only one indicator of how the participatory development paradigm has not lived up to its elegant theoretical promise. This paper argues that the community-based participatory paradigm can live up to its promise as it works in tandem with the dominant paradigm, despite seemingly antithetical epistemologies. A critical ethnography of a community-based participatory research project in a Midwest university health communication class is proposed to assess this contention. Some research questions that could be addressed include: Do group members connect their experience to the …
Mexico’S Real Wages In The Age Of The Great Divergence, 1730-1930, Amilcar Challú
Mexico’S Real Wages In The Age Of The Great Divergence, 1730-1930, Amilcar Challú
History Faculty Publications
This study builds the first internationally comparable index of real wages for Mexico City bridging the eighteenth and the early twentieth century. Real wages started out in relatively high international levels in the mid eighteenth century, but declined from the late 1770s on, with some partial and temporal rebounds after the 1810s. After the 1860s real wages recovered and eventually reached eighteenth-century levels in the early twentieth century. Real wages of Mexico City’s workers slid behind those of high-wage economies to converge with the lower fringes of middle-wage economies. The age of the global great divergence was Mexico’s own age …
Postcolonial Disability In Mohesen Makhmalbaf’S Kandahar, Sukshma Vedere
Postcolonial Disability In Mohesen Makhmalbaf’S Kandahar, Sukshma Vedere
Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies (2015-2021)
Kandahar (2001), an Iranian film directed by Mohsen Makhmalbaf, details the journey of the protagonist, Nafas, to Kandahar to save her sister from committing suicide on the day of the solar eclipse. The film has gained recent attention by disability studies scholars for the representation of disability in Afghanistan; scholars have discussed the significance of prosthetics and international aid for the disabled in post-war zones of the Third World, but little has been said about disability as a postcolonial embodiment. I argue that Kandahar represents the postcolonial state as a disabled space both literally and metaphorically. It projects the veil …

New World Propaganda: Pigafetta's Journal, World Maps, And New European Ideologies, 1525-1556, Megan Sympson
New World Propaganda: Pigafetta's Journal, World Maps, And New European Ideologies, 1525-1556, Megan Sympson
HIST 4800 Early America in the Atlantic World (Herndon)
Once Europeans discovered the New World, cartographers of the time began to map the Americas based on either their own experiences or accounts of others who visited the new land. These maps did not simply serve as navigational tools, but also were used as decorative objects containing elements of propaganda intended to shape opinions of the New World in the Old. In this paper, I examine Antonio Pigafetta’s journal, documenting the voyage of Magellen in 1519-22, and the world maps created after his journal was published. Six world maps by Diogo Ribeiro, Jean Rotz, Guillaume Brouscon, Sebastian Cabot, Pierre Desceliers, …
"Africa In The Museum: The Politics Of The Display Of African Material Culture At The Field Museum", Kristin Otto
"Africa In The Museum: The Politics Of The Display Of African Material Culture At The Field Museum", Kristin Otto
Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)
In this paper, I will analyze how museum exhibitions use material culture to construct and present a narrative about Africa. Exhibiting material culture reflects the power, authority, and ideology of the exhibitor, sometimes at the expense of the displayed culture’s agency in representation. Museums have a particularly infamous history of distorting African culture in exhibits, often validating racist ideologies. Consequently, zealous museum critics have begun to question the relevance of museums in the future public education. The public, however, continues to visit museums and experience exhibits featuring African objects. Based on the challenges and controversies museums exhibiting African objects face …

Swiss Neutrality Examined: Model Or Exception Or Both, John Dreyer, Neal G. Jesse
Swiss Neutrality Examined: Model Or Exception Or Both, John Dreyer, Neal G. Jesse
Political Science Faculty Publications
Neutrality is a difficult position to maintain in a hostile international system. Switzerland is often seen as a successful case of neutrality, managing to both remain neutral and avoid conflict for centuries. This paper examines the possible reasons for the success of Swiss neutrality. It also positions the Swiss experience in comparison to other neutral states. Building upon and consolidating previous research and thought, we define three attributes that allow the Swiss to successfully maintain their neutrality. First is the armed deterrent worked into the national culture; armed neutrality is not just a policy position but a way of life …

Promoting Freedom Through Problem-Based Learning, Jonathan Bostic, Brooks Vostal, Brady Ruffer
School of Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications
Problem-based learning (PBL) is an instructional tool for encouraging active thinking about realistic problems and making sense of them through multiple content-focused lenses. It also has the power to bring faculty together in support of academic and social goals for students. Using a case-study approach, we share the story of a rural school district’s faculty and administrators who decided to implement a school-wide, week-long PBL activity. We focus on the social studies component of the PBL activity, describing the initial decisions teachers made to create this project, the planning teachers completed throughout the semester leading up to it, and students’ …
Henry's Big Adventure, Kelly Rippeth
Henry's Big Adventure, Kelly Rippeth
Honors Projects
I have written and illustrated a children’s book as well as planned a selection of lesson plans that can be used in addition to the book titled Henry’s BIG Adventure. Illustrated children’s books are very valuable to the development of children by aiding in comprehension. According to Mary Renck Jalongo, author of Young Children and Picture Books, children can learn so much from reading stories, even fiction ones. Henry’s BIG Adventure centers on a young boy who finds an old photo album with pictures of several places he has never been before. The album leads him on a big …
Effects Of Altering Student Seating Position On Student Learning In An 8th Grade Mathematics Classroom, Rebecca Szparagowski
Effects Of Altering Student Seating Position On Student Learning In An 8th Grade Mathematics Classroom, Rebecca Szparagowski
Honors Projects
There is a general lack of research on how altering student seating positions in middle and high school classrooms can affect students’ performance in learning the classroom content. In this study I aimed to create a seating position chart to optimize student learning through cooperative learning groups. Student seating positions in two classes were altered with two different methods to compare the effects on students learning and belief in learning

Designing Critical Thinking Based Lesson In Social Studies Education, Kathleen Adelblue
Designing Critical Thinking Based Lesson In Social Studies Education, Kathleen Adelblue
Honors Projects
This paper explains the importance of integrating critical thinking and analysis skills into social studies curriculum. It is designed to show teachers how the process of planning and assessing are essential when considering how to implement the instruction of these skills. I start by explaining how to plan lessons so that they align with skills-based objectives and incorporates the state standards. Then, I outline ways to create lessons focused on developing critical thinking and analysis skills. Because assessment is such an important piece of lesson planning and implementation, the paper has a section dedicated strictly to this topic. It explains …

Differences In Drowning Rates Between Rural And Non-Rural Residents Of Ontario, Canada, Michael Fralick, Zane R. Gallinger, Stephen W. Hwang
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The objective of our study was to determine if rural residence was associated with an increased risk of drowning in Ontario, Canada. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all unintentional drowning deaths in Ontario Canada from 2004 to 2008. Age-adjusted mortality rates for males and females living in rural and non-rural areas were calculated using direct standardization, with non-rural residents as the reference population. We identified a total of 564 unintentional drowning deaths. The majority (89%) of fatal drowning victims were male, and 75% percent of victims were from non-rural area. Excluding bathtub drowning deaths, the age-adjusted drowning mortality …

Mapping The Boston Poor: Inmates Of The Boston Almshouse, 1795–1801, Ruth Wallis Herndon, Amilcar Challú
History Faculty Publications
This article examines postrevolutionary Boston through evidence about its poorest inhabitants, those admitted to the town’s almshouse from 1795 to 1801. Charts and maps constructed from Boston Almshouse records and geographical data about Boston for these years reveal the characteristics of the Almshouse inmates, as well as their residential location before entering the facility and their mobility after entering it a ªrst time. This study is part of a broader project that applies Geographical Information Systems (gis) to analyze and visualize patterns evinced by the inmates of the Boston Almshouse during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Although the …

Global Patterns In Overweight Among Children And Mothers In Less Developed Countries, Jennifer Van Hook, Claire E. Altman, Kelly Stamper Balistreri
Sociology Faculty Publications
Objective: Past research has identified increases in national income and urbanization as key drivers of the global obesity epidemic. That work further identified educational attainment and urban residence as important moderators of the effects of national income. However, such work has tended to assume that children and adults respond in the same way to these factors. In the present paper, we evaluate how the socio-economic and country-level factors associated with obesity differ between children and their mothers. Design: We modelled the associations between maternal education, country-level income and urban residence with mother's and children's weight status. Setting We analysed ninety-five …

Africa's Conflict Minerals, Toni Smith
Africa's Conflict Minerals, Toni Smith
Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)
Conflict minerals are becoming a significant concern in the international community (as seen in the passage of legislature regulating and addressing them such as America’s Dodd Frank Act). Through the efforts of the United Nations, non-governmental organizations, and grassroots organizations (among others), Africa’s conflict minerals are receiving an ever increasing amount of attention. Though conflict minerals are mined in a variety of nations around the world, one nation that is endowed with all four minerals (tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold) discussed in this paper is the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Along with being a nation highly endowed with …

Poverty And The Emergent Culture Of Violence In Northern Nigeria: The Imperative Of Theatre For Development (Tfd) Intervention Strategy, Rasheedah Liman
Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)
Recently, northern Nigeria is attracting global media attention, albeit negatively, on issues which border on leadership failure, ethno-religious conflicts, youth unemployment and official corruption. The attendant poverty in the region has created a climate of frustration and disillusionment on the part of the citizens, which, together with similar problems in other parts of Nigeria, are transmuting into threats to corporate existence. The hydra-headed phenomenon of Boko Haram, for instance, is for all intents and purposes a product of multifaceted social problems. To worsen the case, there appears to be complete failure of imagination going by the way in which both …
