Donald Eugene "Don" Nicoll was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on August 4, 1927, and grew up in the West Roxbury section of the city. He is the son of George and Mary Nicoll. He attended Robert Gould Shaw Junior High School and Boston English High School and graduated from Colby College in Waterville, Maine in 1949, majoring in History with a minor in Government. Don met his future wife, Hilda Farnum, also a Colby student, when they worked in the resort town of Ocean Park, Maine, in the summer of 1944. Stanton Smith was born March 10, 1920 in Lewiston, Maine. His father, Paul Rexford Smith was a local dentist and Bates College graduate, class of 1915. His mother, Marjorie (Shaw) Smith was a graduate of Simmons College and taught Home Economics for several years. Stanton graduated from Bates, in the class of 1941, with a major in Chemistry. He was an avid trumpeter in the Bates Bobcats. In 1941, while working at Kodak, Smith had an opportunity to work on the Manhattan Project, which he pursued. John E. “Jeb” Byrne was born January 15, 1925 in New York City. He went to public schools in Larchmont, New York, attended Iona Prep School, and then served in World War II for two years. Byrne graduated in 1949 from Marquette University College of Journalism on the GI Bill. Both of his parents were Democrats and politically active. Byrne became the Editor of Iona News, which he did for two years, then started a daily Catholic newspaper in Kansas City, Missouri in 1950 called the Sun Herald. He also worked for UPI. Maynard J. Toll, Jr. was born February 5, 1942 in Los Angeles, California. He attended public schools in Los Angeles, and then entered Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. Toll returned to California to attend Stanford University for his undergraduate years, then came back East to the School of Advanced International Studies at The Johns Hopkins University where he obtained his master’s degree and Ph.D. During his time at Johns Hopkins, Toll worked part-time as a speechwriter for Senator Joseph Tydings of Maryland. Harrison Lambert Richardson, Jr. was born in Bangor, Maine on January 26, 1930 to Janet (Lovejoy) and Harrison Lambert Richardson, Sr. He lived in Old Town until the age of 8, when the family moved to Delaware. Around 1941 or 1942, his family returned to Maine to operate a poultry farm in Kittery. He graduated from Traip Academy of Kittery, and spent a year at Kent’s Hill in Readfield, Maine. John Cancelarich was born in New York City on April 8, 1930. His parents were from Austria- Hungary. His father was an asbestos worker, a Republican, and an ardent union supporter.
