This article explores the philosophical significance of islands through the lens of Gilles Deleuze’s geophilosophy, reframing their role in shaping planetary perspectives. Deleuze’s essay “Desert Islands” transcends geographical interpretations, positioning islands as metaphysical entities that embody the tension between separation and renewal. This duality, characterized by a longing for isolation and the utopian desire for reinvention, informs his broader philosophical framework. The Garden of Evening Mists by Tan Twan Eng narrates the progression from apprenticeship of a Malaysian Chinese woman, Teoh Yun Ling, to her romantic relationship with a Japanese gardener, Nakamura Aritomo, expanding the space for identity writing in Malaysian English literature that reflects the interactions among diverse cultures. This article discusses Yun Ling’s adaptation of Japanese culture at the acculturation stage, her rediscovery of Chinese culture at the deculturation stage, and her transcultural practice of different cultures at the neoculturation stage, in light of transculturation theory. Challenging The Status Quo: Disability In Australian Children’S Picture Books, Karen Glasby, Tracey Chamlin, Martin Kerby, Margaret Baguley, Alison Bedford, Eseta Tualaulelei, Emerson Zerafa-Payne

This article will analyze a range of Australian picture books that both explore the topic of disability and serve as educational tools for exploring diversity issues. The books were identified in a survey administered by the State Library of New South Wales (NSW) public library service, which identified 62 books that deal with diversity. Thirteen of the 62 books were assessed as having characters with a disability—including autism, mental illness, dementia, spina bifida, neurodiversity, physical disability, deafness, and implied but unidentified disabilities. Rereading Nick Joaquin As A Devil’S Advocate “La Naval De Manila” (1943) In Context, Luisa L. Gomez

Nick Joaquin characterized himself as a “devil’s advocate” for taking contrarian positions in Philippine cultural history. His early essay “ La Naval de Manila” is taken as an example of such. A re-examination of the essay within its original context of the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines, however, reveals that Joaquin’s early historical imagination must be understood less as an act of rebellion and more as a product of negotiation. It navigates multiple audiences and overlapping empires—the Spanish past it venerates, the American period whose language it uses, and the Japanese present that enabled its publication. Compared to the Philippine short story in English, the Philippine novel in English was slow to develop. Some critics attributed this to the pressure to write only “big novels,” i.e., historical novels, following in the footsteps of Jose Rizal. Bienvenido Lumbera opined that Filipino writers in English could not produce this kind of narrative because of their alienation from that part of the national experience that antedated the literary use of English. The exceptions to this were F. Sionil Jose and Linda Ty-Casper, who, in the 1960s, were already producing multiple historical novels in the realist style. By the 1980s …

Dealing with refugees, was the late Pope Francis’ legacy, during his pontificate, both as the leader of the Catholic Church and a global figure. This article reviews Francis’ pastoral approach of mercy, especially in his concern and advocacy for migrants and refugees, as expressed through his gestures, statements, thoughts, proposals, and policies. Along with issues of global inequality and ecological damage, Francis believed that forced migration can only be addressed through joint efforts based on recognizing human dignity, solidarity, the need for participation, as well as connectivity and inclusivity that encompasses the entire human family. This article explores biblical narratives, focusing specifically on Michal’s story from the books of Samuel (1 Sam 14:19, 18:20-28, 19:11-17, 25:44, 2 Sam 3:12- 16, and 6:16-23), the daughter of King Saul who became David's wife, to shed light on women’s challenges. Through narrative analysis and feminist interpretation, it highlights the relevance of Michal’s story in addressing contemporary societal issues. By drawing on insights from these narratives, the study advocates for societal transformation and gender equality, emphasizing the urgent need for action to alleviate the struggles women face. Since the year 2000, South Korea has been the propagator of the Hallyu (Korean Wave) that has spread across the world, demonstrating the country’s cultural potential. The subject of Hallyu can be approached from several perspectives, first by identifying its origins, current status, and trends by genre; by looking at its effects and the measures that can sustain the Hallyu phenomenon; and also by examining Hallyu trends by country. The invasion of Hallyu (or the Korean Wave) subculture in Indonesia created a new pattern of gendered cultural consumption in the largest Islam country in the world. The most ardent Hallyu supporters in Indonesia are women who are organizing massive urban fan gatherings, K-pop concerts, and group tours to Seoul. Roots And Routes: Hip-Hop From South Korea, Ute Fendler

With the growing success of hip-hop in South Korea, the discussions about the authenticity of this genre increase and create cleavages between the mainstream and the underground rappers. The paper intends to analyze three examples of the contemporary music scene that are representative of different positions. Taking Simon Frith’s work on popular music as a means to construct identity, the paper suggests questioning the concept of authenticity (“roots”) and proposes instead conceiving hip-hop in South Korea as a movement at the crossroads (“routes”) of various influences and practices.

South Korean mainstream pop music, known simply as K-Pop, has become such a huge phenomenon in recent years that it is playing a decisive role in reshaping Korean culture and identity. Indeed, the K-Pop phenomenon is much more than just something musical, intertwining a complexity of sound, performance, ethnicity and gender. Hallyu (the Korean Wave) has been around the world since the late 1990s. Over the period of twenty years, Hallyu has evolved from a regional entertainment pop to a global cultural content. The evolution of Hallyu, like any other evolutions, has involved a long process of localization and globalization. Both K-pop and K-dramas, the two major pillars of the Hallyu revolution, are foreign imports. Although the atrocity around the 1965 coup—better known as Gestapu, Gestok or G 30 S PKI in Indonesia—has been continually on the international humanitarian spotlight, its literary representation in Indonesia has been minimal. This essay investigates the intersections of American empire and American feminism via literature by Filipinas in Spanish. Texts written in Manila by hispanophone Filipinas who were also American subjects and American nationals present a defamiliarizing phenomenon that casts anew standard historical-literary accounts of the 20th century United States. The literary output of Maria Paz Zamora, for instance, reveals an America that emerges on shores not commonly taken to be American at all and yet are more indicative, arguably, of the modern United States than any other.
