Political Conjuncture And Scholarly Disjunctures: Reflections On Studies Of The Philippine State Under Marcos, Filomeno V. Aguilar Jr

This professorial address contends that a scholarly, systematic, and impartial study of Marcos's authoritarian rule is necessary, given the highly politicized interpretations of the past bequeathed to younger generations through textbooks and social media as well as the Philippine academic community's general inability to analyze the defunct regime and to influence public discourse and shape public history. Social scientists must tap new sources of information, such as the Marcos Papers, to produce truthful and nuanced narratives of the past, even as they must endeavor to understand the Marcosian social fantasy and the sources of Filipino authoritarianism, which can illumine both …

The tension between disciplines and interdisciplinary initiatives has been present in different areas around the world. This paper discusses the roots of the tension in the world and in the Philippines, as well as issues and challenges of implementation. It begins with the meaning of discipline and the nuances in the interaction of multiple disciplines, (e.g. multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, or transdisciplinary) and traces and traces the development of disciplines in relation to the development of higher education. Excerpt: Onofre R. “Pagsi” Pagsanghan is a well-loved, multi-awarded teacher in his alma mater, the Ateneo High School, where he has been teaching English and Filipino since he graduated college in 1951. Pagsi founded the Ateneo High School Dramatics Society in 1956, which was renamed Dulaang Sibol in 1966. As both a teacher-formator and a cultural icon, Pagsi has won numerous awards since the 1960s, among them the prestigious Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipinos Award for Teachers in 1985, the first year the awards were ever given. Solidarity As Pagdadamayan In The Filipino Version Of Laudato Si’: An Experiment In Inculturated Translation, Leo-Martin Angelo R. Ocampo

This article explores the inculturated translation of theological concepts, focusing on the author’s analysis of translating "solidarity"; as pagdadamayan in the Filipino version of Laudato Si’. Ocampo establishes a dynamic equivalence between the terms by tracing the development of solidarity within Catholic Social Teaching, exploring the cultural value of pagdadamayan in Filipino tradition, and highlighting their distinct points of convergence. Combining theology and cultural studies, his interdisciplinary research provides a robust framework and model for translating ecclesiastical texts into local contexts. Korean cultural products (known as Hallyu) are now the dominant incarnation of East Asian culture throughout Southeast Asia and have introduced consumers to Korean industry, cosmetics, and culture. Recent work has concentrated heavily upon this region and the new dynamics Southeast Asian countries can offer to the study of inter-Asian cultural links, particularly during the political amalgamation of the ASEAN economic community. The Center for Epidemiological Studies – Depression (CES-D) scale is a well-validated and frequently used measure for assessing symptoms associated with depression. This scale was developed primarily on the basis of American populations, however, and previous research has suggested that the original factor structure may not be appropriate for all populations. One such population is the Filipino population. This study represents the first study we are aware of to examine the factor structure of the CES-D scale in a sample of Filipino seafarers. This study grapples with what it means to be part of a cultural group, from a statistical modeling perspective. The method we present compares within- and between-cultural group variability, in behaviors in families. We demonstrate the method using a cross-cultural study of adolescent development and parenting, involving three biennial waves of longitudinal data from 1296 eight-year-olds and their parents (multiple cultures in nine countries). Family members completed surveys about parental negativity and positivity, child academic and social-emotional adjustment, and attitudes about parenting and adolescent behavior. Variance estimates were computed at the cultural group, person, and within-person level using multilevel models. …

The study attempts to show that while Ophelia A. Dimalanta’s excellent New Critical training and education have rendered her a quintessential poet conscious of form, technique, and craftsmanship, which in turn, has been foregrounded by her equally New Critical-trained colleagues, this New Critical tradition has limited the study of her oeuvre to artistic structure and form, glossing over myriad concerns that the poems may have. The present study, in turn, has recuperated form, technique, and genre to encode the feminism that undergirds her poetic vision. Epidemiological data indicate that risk behaviors are among the leading causes of adolescent morbidity and mortality worldwide. Consistent with this, laboratory-based studies of age differences in risk behavior allude to a peak in adolescence, suggesting that adolescents demonstrate a heightened propensity, or inherent inclination, to take risks. Unlike epidemiological reports, studies of risk taking propensity have been limited to Western samples, leaving questions about the extent to which heightened risk taking propensity is an inherent or culturally constructed aspect of adolescence. Women Of Storm Surges: Meaning Making As Cultural Process Of Social Repair For Yolanda Survivors, Chaya Ocampo; Go

Years after Typhoon Yolanda (international code name: Haiyan) struck Leyte island in the Eastern Visayas region in 2013, I conduct a feminist ethnographic research and inquire into the ways Waray women survivors make meaning of this super typhoon and how they mobilize disaster memory and symbolisms in their survival testimonies to engage in social repair. In showing how the women survivors (a) personify the storm; (b) explain order and safety in cycles and seasons; and (c) explain syncretic theologies pertaining to ideas of justice, I argue that they enact an ancient ferocity as a form of agency for survival.Keywords: anthropology …

Anglo-American or Western acting practices, largely influenced by the works of Russian theater theorist Konstantin Stanislavsky, lie at the core of acting courses in the Philippines and many countries of the world. In Western societies, these practices are taught in a cultural context where individualism, personal achievement, egalitarianism, and democratic principles are valued. These cultural orientations facilitate the expression of an actor’s inner life. In contrast, the cultural orientations in the Philippine context are a deference to authority, a sense of shame, and an inclination to emotionalism.
