The Intersection Of Historical Injustices And Ecological Destruction In Asia: Enriching Catholic Social Teaching On Indigenous Peoples, Reynaldo D. Raluto Jan 2017

The Intersection Of Historical Injustices And Ecological Destruction In Asia: Enriching Catholic Social Teaching On Indigenous Peoples, Reynaldo D. Raluto

Landas

This article examines how colonization and exploitative developmentalism have inflicted structural violence upon Asian indigenous communities, resulting in land displacement and severe environmental degradation. Raluto argues that the marginalization of indigenous peoples is profoundly linked to the destruction of their ancestral lands, which they hold as sacred. By analyzing these interrelated crises through an Asian lens, the author seeks to expand the scope of Catholic Social Teaching (CST). Ultimately, the paper calls for a theological shift that embraces an integral ecology, respects indigenous self-determination, and integrates their non-anthropocentric ecological wisdom into the Church's global social doctrine.

Science And Christian Hope: A Dialogue And Integration Of Their End-Time Narratives, Wilson Angelo G. Espiritu Jan 2017

Science And Christian Hope: A Dialogue And Integration Of Their End-Time Narratives, Wilson Angelo G. Espiritu

Theology Department Faculty Publications

Ruminations about how the world will end continuously stir the curiosity and imagination of a lot of people. These thoughts mostly deal with the possible end-story of history. Science, on one hand, surmises history’s tragic end in its theories about cosmic death. On the other hand, Christianity believes in existence that transcends personal and cosmic death. On surface, the two seem to contradict each other. For some, this confirms the notion that science and Christianity cannot go hand and hand or, worse, that they are adversarial to each other. This paper argues that while the scientific and the Christian end-time …

Social Well-Being In The Philippines: Indicators And Patterns, Emma E. Porio, Justin See

Sociology & Anthropology Department Faculty Publications

This paper describes the patterns and correlates of social well-being in the Philippines. Based on a national survey of 1200 households, the study found that: 1) most Filipinos are happy and satisfied with their current life but those outside of Metro Manila have higher levels of happiness and life satisfaction, 2) slightly more than half are not satisfied with their employment, job security, and finances but have much higher levels of satisfaction with their family/married life, relationship with friends/neighbors and amount of time they have; 3) Metro Manilans compared to their regional counterparts are less happy about their residence, usage …

Manolete Mora. Myth, Mimesis And Magic In The Music Of The T’Boli, Philippines. Quezon City: Ateneo De Manila University Press, 2005. 233 Pages., Arwin Tan

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

Excerpt: The T’boli of Southwestern Mindanao have a multilevel musical system that links their understanding of their earthly environment and the larger cosmic sphere, within which the spirits are believed to reside. In this book, Manolete Mora investigates the part that myth (the participation of the supernatural in the lives of humans) and magic (perceptions and assumptions about the constitution of the world) play in the T’boli people’s comprehension of their world. Mora emphasizes their mimetic musical practices that are deeply connected to their spiritual lives (2).

Training Actors In The Ateneo Theater Arts Program: Negotiating Western Practices Within Cultural Parameters, Ricardo G. Abad, Melissa-Vera M. Maramara Oct 2016

Training Actors In The Ateneo Theater Arts Program: Negotiating Western Practices Within Cultural Parameters, Ricardo G. Abad, Melissa-Vera M. Maramara

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

Anglo-American or Western acting practices, largely influenced by the works of Russian theater theorist Konstantin Stanislavsky, lie at the core of acting courses in the Philippines and many countries of the world. In Western societies, these practices are taught in a cultural context where individualism, personal achievement, egalitarianism, and democratic principles are valued. These cultural orientations facilitate the expression of an actor’s inner life. In contrast, the cultural orientations in the Philippine context are a deference to authority, a sense of shame, and an inclination to emotionalism. How, then, does the Ateneo Theater Arts Program, based in a Philippine university, …

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

Excerpt: Among the Panay Bukidnon, the word sibod means “an experience of flow, . . . a state of having achieved mastery in different levels of structural and creative interplay” (xii). It is simultaneously noun, adjective, and most especially verb. In Sibod: Ideology and Expressivity in Binanog Dance, Music, and Folkways of the Panay Bukidnon, Maria Christine Muyco, an Ilonggo music composer and ethnomusicologist at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, offers us a framework for understanding the performing arts of a community of epic chanters and storytellers, musicians and dancers of binanog (hawk-eagle dance), embroiderers, and farmers living …

Typhoons And The Inequalities Of Philippine Society And History, James Francis Warren Oct 2016

Typhoons And The Inequalities Of Philippine Society And History, James Francis Warren

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Cyclonic storms have helped shape the character of particular regions and areas in the Philippines. But typhoons have not affected all people and all areas in the archipelago equally. Patterns of death and damage from cyclonic storms and the capacity of people to recover and reconstruct their livelihoods reveal differences based on history, regional wealth, and sociopolitical organization. Thisarticle provides comparative examples and explores aspects of the impacts of typhoons—specifically those of 1831, 1882, 1970, 2004, 2006, 2009, and 2013—on Philippine society and history, with particular reference to population increase and cyclonic storms; economic development and typhoons; and political development …

A Review Of Community-Based Solar Home System Projects In The Philippines, Erees Queen B. Macabebe, Reynaldo C. Guerrero Jr, Aleta C. Domdom, Aison S. Garcia, Emma E. Porio, Samuel Matthew G. Dumlao, Teresita R. Perez

Sociology & Anthropology Department Faculty Publications

Solar Home Systems (SHS) are easy to deploy in island and in remote communities where grid connection is costly. However, issues related to maintenance of these systems emerge after they are deployed because of the remoteness and inaccessibility of the communities. This study looked into community-based programs in the Philippines and investigated the following: (1) social preparation, (2) role of the community in the project, and (3) sustainability of the program. In this paper, three communities under two government programs offering SHS are presented. These programs are the Solar Power Technology Support (SPOTS) program of the Department of Agrarian Reform …

Leaders As Shamans: Working To Heal A Troubled World, Sandra Waddock Jun 2016

Leaders As Shamans: Working To Heal A Troubled World, Sandra Waddock

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

In a world greatly in need of healing, today’s leaders acting as shamans could potentially bring the shaman’s ancient wisdom to the effort to create a more sustainable, just, and equitable world. Today’s shamanic leaders undertake the same roles as the traditional shaman: healing, connecting, and sensemaking in the service of a better world. From a leadership perspective, the shaman’s work is that of healing the world around us and our (human) relationship with that world, which is what many leaders are already attempting to do. In this context, healing can mean making our relationships, systems, and organizations whole or …

An Account Of Virtue And Solidarity From Pakikipagkapuwa, Jacklyn A. Cleofas May 2016

An Account Of Virtue And Solidarity From Pakikipagkapuwa, Jacklyn A. Cleofas

Philosophy Department Faculty Publications

There has been a resurgence of interest among philosophers in Asian conceptions of virtue. In this paper I derive and develop an account of virtue in general, and solidarity in particular, from two Filipino concepts: pakikipagkápuwâ (comradeship with fellow humans) and pakikiramdám (emotional sensitivity). The primary source used for the discussion of these concepts is Filipino psychology, which allows for an account of virtue that is grounded in a particular cultural practice. The ensuing account of virtue, however, is not just contextsensitive; it also showcases an aspect of Filipino culture that has a potential for universality. More specifically, the account …

Rediscovering Religion And Secularism: A Critique Of A Critique, Magid Shihade May 2016

Rediscovering Religion And Secularism: A Critique Of A Critique, Magid Shihade

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

In this paper, I will discuss the academic critique of secularism that is emanating from Western academic discourse and some of its limitations. I will also discuss how this scholarly critique of secularism has been used in Palestine, among other places, to defend symbolic as well as real repressive social norms within Muslim societies, and to defend the call for creating an Islamist state. This discussion is to be taken in the context of the Arab Spring, where political Islamist movements that embody fantasies about a certain past are calling for a return to a “real,” “non-secular,” “Islamic” state. Both …

Fetal Personhood In The Christian Philippines: The View From A Visayan Island, Hannah C. Bulloch May 2016

Fetal Personhood In The Christian Philippines: The View From A Visayan Island, Hannah C. Bulloch

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Issues of fetal personhood have been controversial in the Philippines in the context of reproductive health debates, but little is understood about how ordinary Filipinos construct fetal and early infant personhood in the context of their everyday lives. Thisarticle draws on ethnographic research in Siquijor, a Central Visayan island with a Catholic population. Based on conversations about pregnancy and miscarriage, I show that unlike notions promoted by elites of the Catholic Church, which fix personhood to the moment of conception, local notions of personhood are processual. Significantly, ensoulment, while thought to occur at conception, is not sufficient to produce a …

Anthropology And The Aldub Nation: Entertainment As Politics And Politics As Entertainment, Raul Pertierra May 2016

Anthropology And The Aldub Nation: Entertainment As Politics And Politics As Entertainment, Raul Pertierra

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

The links between politics and entertainment in the Philippines are well known, but few have noted these links in the media phenomenon known as AlDub. As a subpart of Eat Bulaga, a long-standing midday TV show, AlDub has gained a life of its own, giving its actors national and even global prominence. How was this possible? Was it happenstance or do basic interests and structures explain its popularity? A deep ethnographic account of how popular culture is generated, reproduced, and consumed reveals its anchoring in material structures the interests of which are often disguised or unacknowledged. Anthropology provides a way …

Suspicious Of The Filipino Social Virtue Of Fortitude, Monica Jalandoni Nalupta Mar 2016

Suspicious Of The Filipino Social Virtue Of Fortitude, Monica Jalandoni Nalupta

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

This article argues that virtue takes on a particular color or texture in specific social contexts. In the case of the Filipino context, the virtue of fortitude is Thomistic. Second, it will argue that it is necessary to engage in a social-ethical critique of social virtue, arguing that since the Philippine concept of fortitude lacks a crucial link with justice it can be considered deficient. The article is concerned with critiquing the form that virtue has assumed in the Philippines, as well as the abuse of ethical language in discussions of virtue. In Philippine society, the language of virtue is …
