Hunter-Gatherer Subsistence Strategies In Changing Environments In Prehistoric Mindoro, Philippines, Alfred Ferdinand F. Pawlik Jul 2025

Hunter-Gatherer Subsistence Strategies In Changing Environments In Prehistoric Mindoro, Philippines, Alfred Ferdinand F. Pawlik

Sociology & Anthropology Department Faculty Publications

As an archipelago straddling two distinct biogeographic zones, Sunda and Wallacea, the Philippines have acted as a conduit for the movements of people, material culture and ideas across Southeast Asia throughout prehistory. The Mindoro Archaeology Project investigates several caves and rockshelters from the late Pleistocene and early Holocene, located in Sta. Teresa and Ilin Island in Occidental Mindoro on the southern end of Mindoro and explores the deep history of the first anatomically modern humans in the Philippines, the timeline of their arrival and dispersal, and their adaptation to coastal and island environments. By at least 40,000 years ago, anatomically …

Aristotle, Women, And Greek Tragedy, Edith Hall Jun 2025

Aristotle, Women, And Greek Tragedy, Edith Hall

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

A paradox lies at the heart of the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle’s analyses of the best type of hero in a tragedy as outlined in his Poetics, his account of women as less able to deliberate than men in his Politics Book 1, and the actual moral stature of women in the surviving tragedies. This illustrated lecture examines the tensions between his remarks about male-female relationships in his ethical and political works and his admiration for Greek tragedy, with special reference to Aeschylus’s Agamemnon, Sophocles’s Antigone, and Euripides’s Medea.

Rethinking The Philosophy Of Religion: Toward A Better Relationship Between Religion And Science, Jovino De Guzman Miroy Jun 2025

Rethinking The Philosophy Of Religion: Toward A Better Relationship Between Religion And Science, Jovino De Guzman Miroy

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

This paper rethinks the philosophy of religion by asking what it can learn from the less antagonistic and more dialogic relationship between science and religion. Greater heterogeneity amongst student beliefs requires that the philosophy of religion become pluralistic. Moving beyond antagonism, the task of the philosophy of religion is to improve the relationship between religion and science for the better. The paper also probes what it means to study religion scientifically. The reform of the philosophy of religion proposed here means that the field shed its apologetic nature, but continue its project of reason-giving for a synthesis of religious experience. …

Viewing The Globe From A Mountain Top: Between The Perspectives Of Al-Bīrūnī, Schmitt And Sloterdijk, John T. Giordano Jun 2025

Viewing The Globe From A Mountain Top: Between The Perspectives Of Al-Bīrūnī, Schmitt And Sloterdijk, John T. Giordano

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

In this article, I wish to examine the manner we imagine our place in the cosmos by contrasting it with earlier techniques for mapping and measuring the globe. I will pay particular attention to the work of Abū Rayḥān Al-Bīrūnī and demonstrate that the assumptions which allowed for his advances in the measurement of the globe were based upon a certain understanding of the relationship of place within the sacred order of the cosmos and the role of reason in this connection. This understanding carries over to his anthropological works which consider the history of other religions and cultures. It …

Service-Learning For Teachers/Exegetes: A Postcolonial Avenue For Biblical Sustainability Education, Maricel S. Ibita Jun 2025

Service-Learning For Teachers/Exegetes: A Postcolonial Avenue For Biblical Sustainability Education, Maricel S. Ibita

Theology Department Faculty Publications

While textual excavation mainstreams biblical scholarship, studies on biblical pedagogies for social justice have also proliferated. In Activism, Bible, and Research-based Teaching (2024), the contributors expound on their biblical research and activism in areas of disability studies, gender-sexuality, community grounding and university pedagogies, Judaeophobia, climate change, etc. Although the book mentioned sustainable development, there is no discussion yet of “education for sustainable development”. In this study, I will briefly present the debate on education for sustainability (EfS), especially in relation to faith-based organizations, including educational institutions. Next, I will delve into the participative, community-based methodology of service-learning and its limits, …

Asino Ti Agtawid?: Ti Panagabel Iti Kina-Ilokano Iti Self-Portrait Mask (2021) Ni Luce F. Melegrito, Mark Louie Tabunan

Katipunan

Politics, Trauma, Cinema: Archiving And Communicating Accountability, Jose Jowel Canuday

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Excerpt: Contributions to this issue take state-driven experiences of violence to account in two discursive grounds of communicating accountability, rights violations documentation and social realist cinema. These explorations offer distinctive thinking on how traumatic episodes in sociopolitical history are recorded, archived, and circulated for public interest examination, discourse, and action in a Global South context.

Cinema As Praxis: An Integrated Theoretical Framework For Philippine Social Advocacy Cinema, Herwin Benedictos Cabasal May 2025

Cinema As Praxis: An Integrated Theoretical Framework For Philippine Social Advocacy Cinema, Herwin Benedictos Cabasal

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

This theoretical paper examines social advocacy cinema in the Philippines as a form of counter-hegemonic cultural practice. Drawing on Third Cinema Theory (Fernando Solanas and Octavio Getino), critical theory (Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer), and participatory communication for social change (Paulo Freire and Thomas Tufte), this paper proposes Cinema as Praxis as an integrated theoretical framework for understanding how politically driven advocacy films operate through the convergence of cultural and political production, ideological representation and critique, and participatory communication. It argues that social advocacy cinema functions through interconnected dimensions: (1) production as praxis, in which collective and grassroots filmmaking constitutes …

Emotional Labour In The Boundary Work Of Filipino Transnational Workers In Indian Cities, Jozon A. Lorenzana May 2025

Emotional Labour In The Boundary Work Of Filipino Transnational Workers In Indian Cities, Jozon A. Lorenzana

Department of Communication Faculty Publications

This article examines the boundary work undertaken by Filipino transnational workers in globalizing Indian cities. While the ‘practice turn’ in boundary studies has shed light on boundary work's mundane and performative dimensions, the role of emotions in performing such work needs to be ascertained. To account for both the performative and emotional dimensions of boundary work, I present an ethnographic study on Filipino professionals in India that engages Hochschild's concept of emotional labour. Since the mid-2000s, local and multinational companies have hired Filipino professionals to set up businesses and manage operations. I examined their practices of boundary work through in-depth …

The research focuses on the stances of actively competing Filipino Cisgender Women Athletes (CWA) in combat sports regarding the inclusion of Transgender Women Athletes (TWA). Adopting a qualitative research design to uncover the discourse around the participation of TWA in combat sports, the researchers interviewed ten (N=10) actively competing CWAs. The researchers integrated the arenas where discourse occurs—sporting experiences, media interactions, and social relationships—in the questions in order to understand how the stance of CWA is constructed. Results showed emerging themes namely Sense of Fairness (SF) between CWA and TWA, Invasion of Women’s Spaces (IWS) in combat sports, Kind of …

Decolonizing Memory: Omnibus Life Writing In Post-1989 Romania, Ioana Luca Apr 2025

Decolonizing Memory: Omnibus Life Writing In Post-1989 Romania, Ioana Luca

Kritika Kultura

This essay conceptualizes omnibus life writing—collective autobiographical volumes—as a means of decolonizing memories of communism and the transition in Romania. I argue that omnibus life writing offers a viable framework for challenging entrenched postcommunist narratives and fostering a relational and intersectional model of remembering the recent past. Through an analysis of Ioana Pârvulescu’s Și eu am trăit în communism [I’ve Also Lived under Communism, 2015], Dan Lungu and Amelia Gheorghiţă’s Cărţi, filme, muzici şi alte distracţii din communism [Books, Movies, Music, and Other Entertainment under Communism, 2014] and Cartea copilăriilor [The Book of Childhoods, 2016], and the Prima dată series …

War, Violence, And Womanhood: (Re)Membering Women’S Military Narratives In China’S Revolution And Civil War, Szu-Nuo Chou Apr 2025

War, Violence, And Womanhood: (Re)Membering Women’S Military Narratives In China’S Revolution And Civil War, Szu-Nuo Chou

Kritika Kultura

In this ethnographic study, the author interviewed Chinese women aged 85 and older to explore their childhood and adolescent experiences of exile and military violence in the context of World War II and Chinese Civil War. Throughout the years of China’s revolution and interparty conflicts, ordinary Chinese women suffered from war-related violence—not only on the frontlines, but especially in domestic spaces, where the head of the household (e.g., father, husband, or son) engaged in a variety of violent and misogynistic performances associated with culturally-rooted Chinese patriarchy and masculinity. The author argues that in our current political discourse, the Chinese revolution and …

Alaála: Tropical Memory, Christian Jil R. Benitez Apr 2025

Alaála: Tropical Memory, Christian Jil R. Benitez

Kritika Kultura

This essay considers a moment in José Rizal’s novel El Filibusterismo (1891)—namely, the substitution of the Spanish figure of “black King Melchor” with the folk “King of the Indios,” Bernardo Carpio, in the eyes of a native coachman—with a critical attention to how such an instant of comparison unfolds. The essay first ruminates on the crucial phrase deployed by Rizal to signify the moment, pensar naturalmente, which has been interpreted differently across various translations of the novel, but specifically rendered here as alaála or remembering. Through a brief philological examination of the latter Filipino word, regarding it as a material …

“Ghosts At The Banquet”: The Kenyan Mau Mau In Global Memory, Christian Alvarado Apr 2025

“Ghosts At The Banquet”: The Kenyan Mau Mau In Global Memory, Christian Alvarado

Kritika Kultura

In the decades since Kenyan independence from British rule, scholarship regarding memory of the Mau Mau Uprising has been bound by its nationalisms. “Nationalism” in the plural is apt because of the ways of remembering Mau Mau. It has investigated pressing issues in both Kenya and Great Britain itself. This article engages both foundational and recent scholarship in this vein in order to identify the set of assumptions that has shaped these debates and point toward new ways of thinking beyond them. In pursuance of new avenues in the study of global memories of Mau Mau, it also attempts a …

Decolonizing National And Imperial Memories: Introduction, Jarula M.I. Wegner, Jocelyn S. Martin, Mary M. Mccarthy, Ruramisai Charumbira Apr 2025

Decolonizing National And Imperial Memories: Introduction, Jarula M.I. Wegner, Jocelyn S. Martin, Mary M. Mccarthy, Ruramisai Charumbira

Kritika Kultura

Building on Frantz Fanon’s insights into the intricate entanglements of colonialism, nation-states, and memories, there have been increasing calls to decolonize national and imperial memories. This introduction sketches the wider historical context within which these calls emerged, the collaboration that led to this special issue, and the contributions it makes to the wider debate. The introduction observes a general rise in calls for decolonization around the globe. The appeal to decolonize national and imperial memories was a response to at least three significant historical developments. First, the insight that mid-twentieth century decolonization remained incomplete, second, the widespread “memory boom” of the …

Role Of Classroom Openness In Digital Literacy And Online Civic Engagement Among Filipino High School Students, Ma. Glenda Wui, Jessica Sandra R. Claudio, Jie Zhang, Carl Russel R. Reyes, Rosselle Trishia Reyes, Enrique Niño P. Leviste

Sociology & Anthropology Department Faculty Publications

The recent prominence of social media use necessitates new approaches in forming citizenship practices among the youth, the primary users of these platforms. While schools play a critical role in instilling civic values, dispositions, and skills among young people, it is equally important to examine the role digital literacy plays in facilitating civic engagement. Digital literacy pertains to technical skills in using social media, obtaining knowledge and information on social media, and communicating or expressing opinions on social media. The current study examined the relationship of classroom openness to online civic engagement with digital literacy as a mediating variable. The …

A Critical Re-Examination Of Karl Rahner’S Grundaxiom: The Axiomatic Unity Of The “Economic” And “Immanent” Trinity, Salvador G. Agualada Jr. Mar 2025

A Critical Re-Examination Of Karl Rahner’S Grundaxiom: The Axiomatic Unity Of The “Economic” And “Immanent” Trinity, Salvador G. Agualada Jr.

Loyola Papers

This paper critically re-examines Karl Rahner’s grundaxiom on the unity of the economic and immanent Trinity. It affirms Rahner’s effort to restore Trinitarian theology to the center of Christian life by grounding doctrine in salvation history. However, it questions the full identification of the two dimensions, engaging contemporary theological critiques to offer a more nuanced interpretation. The study ultimately argues for a balanced approach that preserves both divine self-revelation in history and the transcendent mystery of God.

Intersecting Paths: Balthasar’S Theological Aesthetics And Filipino Ganda In The Poón And Traslación, Rheadh R. Dela Torre

Loyola Papers

This article examines the convergence between Hans Urs von Balthasar’s theological aesthetics and the Filipino concept of ganda, with a particular focus on two elements of the Black Nazarene devotion – the Poón and the Traslación – as illustrative examples of this convergence. Aware that the scope of his theological works remained primarily European, Balthasar expressed a desire for his theology to resonate with other cultures. In response, this article explores how his theology can be connected to the Filipino understanding of beauty through the concept of ganda.

Negotiating Theological Meaning In Contemporary Film, Shimbo Pastory William Mar 2025

Negotiating Theological Meaning In Contemporary Film, Shimbo Pastory William

Loyola Papers

This paper examines how contemporary films function as social constructs that shape identity and influence the negotiation of theological meaning among young viewers. Drawing on insights from John Pungente and Monty Williams, it explores how Ignatian spirituality and the Spiritual Exercises can guide theological engagement with film. Using theological hermeneutics and qualitative film analysis, the study investigates how young Christians, particularly Gen Z viewers, interpret cinematic narratives through a Christian lens. It argues that even non-religious films can mediate theological insights and become meaningful spaces for discovering God’s saving presence in contemporary culture.

Rereading Nick Joaquin As A Devil’S Advocate “La Naval De Manila” (1943) In Context, Luisa L. Gomez Jan 2025

Rereading Nick Joaquin As A Devil’S Advocate “La Naval De Manila” (1943) In Context, Luisa L. Gomez

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

Nick Joaquin characterized himself as a “devil’s advocate” for taking contrarian positions in Philippine cultural history. His early essay “ La Naval de Manila” is taken as an example of such. A re-examination of the essay within its original context of the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines, however, reveals that Joaquin’s early historical imagination must be understood less as an act of rebellion and more as a product of negotiation. It navigates multiple audiences and overlapping empires—the Spanish past it venerates, the American period whose language it uses, and the Japanese present that enabled its publication. Its power lies not …

Why The Council Of Nicaea Still Matters For Asian Trinitarian Ontology, Patrick Vance S. Nogoy Jan 2025

Why The Council Of Nicaea Still Matters For Asian Trinitarian Ontology, Patrick Vance S. Nogoy

Landas

Does the Council of Nicaea still matter for developing Asian trinitarian ontologies? Yes. This paper examines the development of a faith-based ontology of a triune God, the centerpiece of the Nicene Creed. It advances the claim that the Nicene Trinitarian ontology is rooted in faith revelation that frames a novel construal of consubstantial (homoousios). From this, one can propose the concept of relation as a co-principle in being. Giulio Maspero calls this the objective genitive sense of the term trinitarian ontology: Christian thinkers made innovations on the dominant metaphysics of their time by discerning God’s being according to revelation. Part …
