Communicating Covid-19 Vaccines: Lessons From The Dengue Vaccine Controversy In The Philippines, Gideon Lasco, Vincen Gregory Yu
Communicating Covid-19 Vaccines: Lessons From The Dengue Vaccine Controversy In The Philippines, Gideon Lasco, Vincen Gregory Yu
Development Studies Faculty Publications
As countries around the world begin to roll out COVID-19 vaccines; vaccine safety communication is more relevant than ever. The dengue vaccine controversy in the Philippines offers lessons that can be applied to immunisation programmes being organised today to address the COVID-19 pandemic. Effective vaccine safety communication entails (re)building relationships of trust between government and the public; upholding the credibility of scientific institutions and maintaining transparency. It also involves viewing health against the broader framework of equity; using an interdisciplinary approach to health communication and putting a premium on public feedback.

Escuela Náutica De Manila: Scientific Education In The Spanish Philippines, Philip Vergel Ay-Ad, Jr. Aguilar
Escuela Náutica De Manila: Scientific Education In The Spanish Philippines, Philip Vergel Ay-Ad, Jr. Aguilar
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Science education in the nineteenth-century Philippines has been portrayed as highly deficient, yet pockets of respectable scientific education existed. The Escuela Náutica de Manila, which opened in 1820, offered such an education. Thisarticle narrates its establishment and discusses its changing curricular offerings in relation to empire-wide initiatives and constraints internal to the Philippines. Its quality of scientific education can be glimpsed from reports related to three episodes: the earthquake in 1863; the planned closure of the school in the late 1880s; and the advent of American colonial rule in the early 1900s. This school survives as the Philippine Merchant Marine …

Dāniw Ancestors, Ritual, And Officiant As A Form Of Authority In Mangyan Patag Society (Southeast Mindoro), Elisabeth Luquin
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
The Mangyan Patag in southeastern Mindoro encapsulate the relational nature of beings, such as humans, in the concept of ‘āpu, a polysemic term that designates ancestors in general. One type of ‘āpu is the dāniw, who, forming a pair (even number) in a relationship with humans, enables ritual officiants to enter the invisible world of spirits, restore a destructive situation, and maintain the continuity of society. When in a relationship with humans by odd numbers, ancestors called hiri’ enable officiants to kill for personal purposes. However, the personal power of hiri’ ancestors is subordinate to the authority of dāniw ancestors.KEYWORDS: …

Mathematics Embedded In Culture: The Weaves Of Batak Basketry, Ma. Louise De Las Peñas, Agnes D.; Garciano, Debbie Marie; Verzosa
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
A close look at the art of basket weaving of the Batak indigenous community in Palawan, Philippines, discloses the depth of mathematics present in the weaves of the baskets. Using white and black one-sided bamboo strips, Batak weavers are able to construct a basket of a given size that displays highly symmetric patterns. The presence of elaborate patterns in the baskets indicates masterful planning by the weaver and an inherent knowledge of algebraic and geometric principles even without formal training in mathematics.KEYWORDS: BATAK • BASKET • WEAVE • SYMMETRY • PATTERN
Living Carriers In The East: Chinese Cargadores In Nineteenth-Century Manila, Jely A.; Galang
Living Carriers In The East: Chinese Cargadores In Nineteenth-Century Manila, Jely A.; Galang
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Although the history of the Chinese in the Philippines is generally well known, what has not been probed is the way working-class Chinese lived and conducted their trades amid restrictive colonial policies. Using previously unexplored archival materials, thisarticle examines the lives and circumstances of Chinese cargadores (stevedores and transporters) within the urban and commercial milieus of Manila during the nineteenth century. Chinese cargadores were regarded as highly dependable workers, but were treated, because of their ethnicity and numerical strength, as both marginal and dangerous, needing to be strictly regulated and disciplined by the Spanish colonial state.KEYWORDS: CHINESE • MANUAL LABORERS …

Jacques Dupuis’ Trinitarian Christology And Its Contributions Towards Interreligious Dialogue, Alexander Hendra Dwi Asmara
Jacques Dupuis’ Trinitarian Christology And Its Contributions Towards Interreligious Dialogue, Alexander Hendra Dwi Asmara
Loyola Papers
This paper analyzes pivotal ideas of the controversial Belgian Jesuit theologian Jacques Dupuis in the field of interreligious dialogue. In particular, it addresses the possibility of using Dupuis’ Trinitarian Christology as a lens for understanding other religions and establishing a mutually enriching relationship with them, without falling into the extremes of inclusivism or exclusivism, or into eclecticism, syncretism, and relativism. While some of Dupuis’ ideas may seem scandalous at first glance, the author’s deftly nuanced analysis of his thoughts contextualizes his framework within the purview of the infinity of Trinitarian love and vitality, which is not exhausted in the definitive …

Designing The Grade 12 Christian Life Education Curriculum Of Xavier School Nuvali Through The Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm And The Life-Faith-Life Framework, Elisa Manansala-Magtibay
Loyola Papers
This paper chronicles the efforts of a relatively new, Jesuit-run K-12 school located in an emerging urban center a few miles south of Metro Manila as it strives to integrate Ignatian principles in its religious instruction curriculum. Aside from providing a valuable glimpse into the design process behind their program, this article also contains several seminal ideas that can be explored and further developed by those involved in the education ministry. Among these is the potential to use more widely known and current teaching and learning models, such as Understanding by Design and Groome’s Shared Christian Praxis model, as concrete …

Creatio Continua In Missio Dei: Ecological Spirituality And Pedagogy In Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’, David O. Reyes
Loyola Papers
This paper examines an important aspect to which the Pope dedicates the entire Chapter 6 of this landmark document: the formation of an authentic ecological spirituality and pedagogy to address the current global crisis. Unfortunately, thischapter is frequently neglected in discussions, perhaps not only because of its placement towards the end of the encyclical, but also because spirituality and pedagogy are often viewed as the exclusive realm of a few experts, resulting in a certain reticence to tackle them. Hence, this paper develops the notion of creatio continua as a practical summons to participate in the missio Dei. It then …

Pagbibiyaya Ayon Sa Pagdedevocion At Pagsisiyam Sa Cabanal-Banalang Ina Ng Caliuanagan, Joseph Y. Haw Jr.
Pagbibiyaya Ayon Sa Pagdedevocion At Pagsisiyam Sa Cabanal-Banalang Ina Ng Caliuanagan, Joseph Y. Haw Jr.
Loyola Papers
This article, written in Filipino, examines the theological notion of grace imparted through the Pagdedevocion at Pagsisiyam sa Cabanal-Banalang Ina ng Caliuanagan (Devotion and Novena to the Most Holy Virgin of Light), which is one of the Marian devotions introduced by the Jesuits in the Philippines. Originally developed to combat an emerging heresy at the time of its writing, the paper explores how the novena was able to counter its neo-Pelagian tendencies in a subtle but effective way through its sound anthropology as well as its solid doctrine concerning grace, justification, and redemption centered on developing friendship, paquiquipagcatoto, with God.

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, socio-economic inequalities have become exacerbated and COVID-19 related hate crimes have increased. This paper explores how citizenship education might be reimagined in response to this context, with the vision of rebuilding a more equitable and compassionate society. By using a collective autobiographical writing approach, this study documented six different autobiographical reflexivities of citizenship education scholars who were from different parts of the world: China, South Korea, the Philippines, the United States, Nepal and the United Kingdom. It also observed the way the pandemic played out in the location where they were situated during …

Living Together In Precarious Times: Covid-19 In The Philippines, Gideon Lasco
Development Studies Faculty Publications
The coronavirus pandemic has laid bare the necessity—for social scientists and the rest of the public alike—of an ecological; non-anthropocentric view of the world as humans grapple with microbes; surround themselves with plants; and engage with non-human animals in ways that range from abuse to affection. This chapter uses this multispecies perspective to reflect on the Philippine experience of COVID-19; offering illustrative examples; sketching tentative insights; and concluding with a research agenda for future work.

Community health workers in low- and middle-income country primary health care systems are well suited to perform essential functions on the frontlines of Covid-19 pandemic responses. However, clear and coordinated guidance, updated infection control training, and reliable access to personal protective equipment must be ensured in order to deploy them safely and effectively. With these additional responsibilities, community health workers must also be supported to ensure that hard-fought gains in population health, including progress on non-communicable diseases, are sustained throughout the pandemic.
