The Acts Way: Returning To The Original Plan A Of Church Planting, Joshua D. Sorrows
The Acts Way: Returning To The Original Plan A Of Church Planting, Joshua D. Sorrows
Great Commission Research Journal
This article examines the question: Is there a way to plant gospel-centered churches faster? Building off of Donald McGavran’s homogeneous unit theory, this article explores the biblical basis, the varied methodologies, and the successful implementation of a micro-church planting strategy in the Colorado Rockies. It evaluates the validity of micro-church planting alongside our current methods of church planting. The article calls for consideration to return to the Acts model of church planting through disciple-making that will help the Church go deep and reach wide.
Musical Worship: The New Sacrament?, Elsen Portugal
Musical Worship: The New Sacrament?, Elsen Portugal
Great Commission Research Journal
Music has been present in the worship practices of Christian communities as far back as the early days of the Church. Its presence has not been merely tolerated but intentionally integrated into liturgical practices, sometimes reflecting practices under the old covenant, and at other times adopting other shapes. Music’s meaning and power have also been variously evaluated by theologians and laypeople through the centuries. In certain segments of Christianity, music has even developed a theological relationship to concepts of sacrament. Such a relationship has penetrated the “worship event” in the latter part of the twentieth century and has frequently become …
The Song Of Cuba’S Great Awakening: Music In Baptist Worship And Witness, Michael Sharp, Ed Steele
The Song Of Cuba’S Great Awakening: Music In Baptist Worship And Witness, Michael Sharp, Ed Steele
Great Commission Research Journal
From the 1990s to the present, Cuban Baptists have witnessed a time of unparalleled church growth. During that time frame, musicians have participated in ministries aimed at church growth by organizing largescale public musical events, compiling a Cuban hymnal that included indigenous Cubano worship songs, developing new programs of leadership training for church musicians, and employing music in missionary projects both at home and abroad. This article explores what can be learned from the Cuban Baptists’ experience regarding music as an effective tool in evangelism, the value of musicians reaching musicians as a mission strategy, the importance of ethnodoxology in …

Exegeting Scripture, Exegeting Culture: Combining Exegesis To Fulfill God's Calling, Shawn P. Behan
Exegeting Scripture, Exegeting Culture: Combining Exegesis To Fulfill God's Calling, Shawn P. Behan
The Asbury Journal
Seminary has separated biblical exegesis from cultural exegesis, teaching them in different programs and seldom requiring them for those ...we need both – they are mutually building and supporting entities that only make sense when combined with the other. As teachers, preachers, and leaders of God’s Church, it is essential that we learn how to combine these two exegetical processes in order to faithfully live out our calling in God’s kingdom. Thus, we must study both biblical and cultural exegesis and learn how to combine the two; for one without the other is knowledge, but combined they form knowledge with …

An Alternative Approach To The Dilemma Of 2 Kgs 3:27, Drew Holland
An Alternative Approach To The Dilemma Of 2 Kgs 3:27, Drew Holland
The Journal of Inductive Biblical Studies
King Mesha’s sacrifice of his son and the subsequent retreat of the Israelite army from Moab in 2 Kgs 3:27 has proven to be a puzzling text for interpreters from rabbinic Judaism to the present. Modern historical analysis has fallen short in providing a coherent explanation for the events of this verse. This article attempts to seek a new and cogent interpretation for this passage based upon support from other texts and lexemes within the Old Testament. In keeping with the theme of Omride disobedience found throughout the Old Testament, this article deduces from intertextual evidence that Israel participated in …
Ancient Literary Criticism And Major Structural Relationships: A Comparative Analysis, Matthew R. Peterson, Dain Alexander Smith
Ancient Literary Criticism And Major Structural Relationships: A Comparative Analysis, Matthew R. Peterson, Dain Alexander Smith
The Journal of Inductive Biblical Studies
The texts of the New Testament (NT) emerged during an era that produced robust literary and rhetorical criticism. This article draws from works produced during that period to investigate similarities and differences between the figures discussed by ancient literary theorists and the Major Structural Relationships (MSRs) identified by David R. Bauer and Robert A. Traina. Ultimately, this article reveals that the MSRs proposed in their Inductive Bible Study (IBS) handbook are not merely an invention of modern literary critical reading strategies but reflect devices incorporated into ancient literature and identified and discussed by ancient literary theorists.

Why I Train Christian Leaders Of The Global Church, Richard Frazer
Why I Train Christian Leaders Of The Global Church, Richard Frazer
Great Commission Research Journal
In the spring of 2019, the author utilized an email survey consisting of two questions to ascertain the opinions of eighteen indigenous leaders who had received equipping and resourcing from Western leaders sent through Spiritual Overseers Service (SOS) International. The recipients were invited to elaborate on the intrinsic and long-term value of equipping leaders within their spheres of influence. This article comes from three sources: these responses, the author’s thirteen-year experience training indigenous ministry leaders as a full-time pastor, and his fifteen-year leadership of the global Christian equipping ministry known as Spiritual Overseers Service (SOS) International. The author is well-acquainted …
