Public Worship Aug 2011

Public Worship

ATS Digital Resources

"Every man was made to glorify and enjoy God. This enjoyment is chiefly realized in acts of devotion. How many of your acquaintances are devout, thoughtful, and pious who neglect public worship? Doubtless but very few. How many, on the contrary, are vicious, wicked, and profane? Compare the church going population of your own town with those who go not to the house of God; compare them as citizens, as business men; compare their influence in society, and then say whether the public means of grace are not useful. Let the comparison be fair and faithful."

Cut It Down Aug 2011

Cut It Down

ATS Digital Resources

"We are the trees which his own hand has planted. From us he desires and seeks fruit. When, at the close of the last year, he came to you with this intent, how justly, "after so long a time," might he have said, "Cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?" But the greatness of his compassion pleaded in your behalf; and cried, "Let it alone this year also!" It was a merciful reprieve."

Secret Prayer Aug 2011

Secret Prayer

ATS Digital Resources

"OUR Saviour, in language the most emphatic, has enjoined upon us this duty: "Enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut the door, pray to thy Father which is in secret, and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly." How distinct is this command! And yet it is to be feared that by many professed Christians it is more neglected than almost any other."

To Young Men Aug 2011

To Young Men

ATS Digital Resources

"To you, young man, are these words spoken, with a significant and impressive meaning. You, too, if unconverted, are dead, and on your way to an eternal sepulcher. Mistake us not. Alive, indeed, you may be to all that this world calls life. To the pleasures of sense, the allurements of sin, the scenes of time, the great excitements of' the day, ....And yet you are dead; your soul is "dead in trespasses and sins." You are dead to holiness, dead to spirituality, dead to all real religion, to all scriptural hope of heaven; and each throb of your pulse …

The Seventh Commandment Aug 2011

The Seventh Commandment

ATS Digital Resources

"GOD has spoken; he has spoken publicly, with unusual frequency, and with a severity which should cause the seducer and the libertine to tremble! In the hearing of the listening tribes, in the audience of their wives, 'their young men and maidens, and their children too; out of the midst of the fire which burned on the brow of the trembling mountain, he said: "THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTERY!" "

Counsels To A Young Convert, Rev A W Mangum Aug 2011

Counsels To A Young Convert, Rev A W Mangum

ATS Digital Resources

"The pilgrimage is begun. It requires effort and vigilance for its consummation. You need counsel, and with sincerest sympathy I humbly offer it. Much that will help you is suggested by those words of warning first uttered by the inspired king: "IF SINNERS ENTICE THEE, CONSENT THOU NOT." These words clearly imply that you may or may not consent; that is, you have the power of choice. It implies that your will is free."

Dancing And Balls Aug 2011

Dancing And Balls

ATS Digital Resources

This tract is mainly composed of two editorials which appeared in the "Christian Advocate and Journal." "Dancing has existed since man first felt too much of joy to stand still, and in every land where the exuberant life of man has not been utterly crushed. It exists in every family today where children are born to a happy lot. To the rich melody of their own gushing laughter, with inimitable grace and faultless time, they trip over the floor till some better than angel folds them tenderly to rest. If anyone objects to such dancing he had better have a …

Kind Reproof Well Taken

ATS Digital Resources

"Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!" We are not able fully to calculate the benefits which, under God, flowed from that one kind reproof; but the day shall declare them. ... Within its walls the glorious Gospel of the blessed God is faithfully published; and of one thing we are well assured - the word of the Lord shall prosper, it shall not return void, for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it."

Beware Of Bad Books Aug 2011

Beware Of Bad Books

ATS Digital Resources

"WHY, what harm will books do me? The same harm that personal intercourse would with the bad men who wrote them. If a good book can be read without making one better, a bad book cannot be read without making one worse. ... Here we have a definition of what we mean by" bad books:" whatever books neither feed the mind nor purify the heart, but intoxicate the mind and corrupt the heart."

Do Not Be Offended Aug 2011

Do Not Be Offended

ATS Digital Resources

"As Naaman was told by Elisha how to be cured of his leprosy, so have you been toid that "there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must, be saved," but the name of Jesus Christ. Acts iv,12. ... And while you have heard the only way of salvation faithfully proclaimed, and the consequences of neglecting it solemnly pointed out, perhaps, like Naaman, you have been offended and gone away in a rage."

Come Ye To The Waters Aug 2011

Come Ye To The Waters

ATS Digital Resources

"Reader, it may be that YOU HAVE COME to the waters. Happy being! Have you ever regretted coming to the waters? No, never. Your only regret is that you did not come before. Had you accepted the invitation earlier many willful practices would have been prevented, many evil companions would have been avoided, and you would have been spared many bitter reflections. Have you not been amply repaid for coming to the waters? Yes. You parted with sin, but you found holiness. You gave up the world, but you obtained Christ. You incurred, perhaps, the displeasure of relatives and friends, …

Anti-Annihilation - Tract V, Rev Nd George Aug 2011

Anti-Annihilation - Tract V, Rev Nd George

ATS Digital Resources

"Here we have the compound nature of man clearly stated. While the outward man, or physical part, decays, the inward man, the soul, is renewed, etc. But if man is a unit, and the soul, spirit, mind, or whatsoever materialists may choose to call it, is but an attribute of the physical nature, which, of course, decays and perishes with it, how can it, then, when that on which it entirely depends for its existence is perishing, be renewed day by day? Materialists may understand this, but we do not. Personality is, by the apostle in this text, attributed to …

What If It Be All True, Dr Horatius Bonar Aug 2011

What If It Be All True, Dr Horatius Bonar

ATS Digital Resources

"If all these things be true, then I must be in earnest. Every thing connected with God and Christ, with sin and pardon, with life and death, with wrath and favor, with time and eternity, is so unspeakably momentous that I must be up and minding these things without delay. If I am not in earnest I am a fool, for what shall it profit me to gain the whole world and to lose my soul?"

Buried With Him By Baptism Into His Death Aug 2011

Buried With Him By Baptism Into His Death

ATS Digital Resources

A written conversation with a Baptist about the error of using the term 'buried with Christ by baptism' and the 'liquid' grave. ... "F. There is no "liquid grave" in my Bible. Your quotation, "buried with Christ by baptism," is as improper and as deceptive as to quote "There is no God" to prove that the Bible teaches Atheism, leaving out "The fool hath said in his heart." You leave out "by baptism into HIS DEATH," the very words which explain this baptism. What proof have you that there is a liquid grave in ritual baptism?"

Was Not Christ Immersed In Jordan? Aug 2011

Was Not Christ Immersed In Jordan?

ATS Digital Resources

"The nature of Christ's baptism was a public covenant engagement to "fulfill an righteousness." The sign and seal of this covenant-baptism was pure water. " It is finished," proclaimed this covenant fulfilled on Calvary by redeeming blood. The baptism of Christ on Calvary is an atonement for sin. The baptism of his people, with water, is the symbol-remission of sin; the reality being the baptism of the soul by the Holy Ghost. To talk of "following Christ," in his distinctive baptism, is a folly and a sin which requires his gracious intercession -- "Father, forgive them, they know not what …

Baptize-What Does It Mean? Aug 2011

Baptize-What Does It Mean?

ATS Digital Resources

"The believer in Christ, ritually baptized by pure water, by pouring or sprinkling, (dipping into water is unknown to the Scriptures, and a true immersion in water is impossible, as destroying life,) receives, by symbol, the purifying baptism of the Holy Ghost."

The Divine Anointing, Rev Wilmer Coffman Aug 2011

The Divine Anointing, Rev Wilmer Coffman

ATS Digital Resources

"The history of the Church furnishes many other examples of the same glorious truth that the baptism of the Holy Ghost confers spiritual might upon all who receive it. ... Believer in Jesus, this precious experience may be yours this very day. You need it for the perfecting of holiness and for the attainment of highest usefulness. You cannot do the work to which God calls you without it; nor can you know that fullness of joy which it is your privilege to possess except this holy baptism be received. Delay not, therefore, to claim by faith your blessed portion."

Anti-Annihilation - Tract 1, Rev Nd George Aug 2011

Anti-Annihilation - Tract 1, Rev Nd George

ATS Digital Resources

These are but a small number of the texts which refute the materialism advocated by annihilationists. Who so blind as not to see that, if annihilationists have the truth, Christ and his apostles were sadly deficient as teachers of their doctrine? Or rather, who cannot see that their doctrine is glaringly false, and that Christ and the apostles taught no such opinions; but, on the other hand, were teachers of the compound nature of man and the endless suffering of the ungodly? Were the materialists of the present age to adopt the same method of instruction that the Saviour did, …

The Sunday Newspaper, H. K. Carroll Aug 2011

The Sunday Newspaper, H. K. Carroll

ATS Digital Resources

"The Church must not depend on the statute-book for right Sabbath observance. It must give sound teaching on the subject, and exhort its members to hallow the day as God himself has hallowed it, by putting aside their business, by worshiping' in the House of God with clear and undistracted minds, and by avoiding all those aids to secularity the chief of which is the Sunday newspaper."

The Gift Of Power, Henry W. Bennett Aug 2011

The Gift Of Power, Henry W. Bennett

ATS Digital Resources

"The kingdom of God shall come in power-dynamite. The power-dynamite -of the Lord was present. It is in the 8piritual world what dynamite is in the material world. The truth may be preached, the word declared, the Bible read, and personal work performed; but if this power does not descend, nor accompany the work, nor touch the people, the arm of salvation is shortened."

Church Money-Matters Aug 2011

Church Money-Matters

ATS Digital Resources

"Can we doubt that if the Christian Church gave only to glorify God and build up character there would be money in abundance? Is not the word of God, based on the nature of spiritual things, a guarantee of it? The secret of success lies in the quality (If the giving act. It must be like praying, testifying, visiting, teaching, and all other religious duties-a spiritual grace educating the giver and possessing inspiring dignity."
