Systems Analysis Of Gps Electrical Power System Redesign, Kevin J. Walker Dec 1995

Systems Analysis Of Gps Electrical Power System Redesign, Kevin J. Walker

Theses and Dissertations

A systematic analysis is applied to the electrical power subsystem of the Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) system. Results determined the most appropriate power source and conversion system Options. Photovoltaic solar arrays, the current power system, were not included in the analysis. The best electrical power subsystem options found in the analysis include a solar power source with either a dynamic or direct conversion technique, and a direct conversion nuclear source. The two solar options are designed, at a low level of detail, to provide the same level of power the current GPS photovoltaic solar array system provides. These two designs …

Neutron Damage In Distributed Bragg Reflectors And Microcavity Lasers, Mark A. Suriano Dec 1995

Neutron Damage In Distributed Bragg Reflectors And Microcavity Lasers, Mark A. Suriano

Theses and Dissertations

Distributed Bragg Reflectors (DBRs) grown on a gallium-arsenide substrate for a solid state mirror and a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) were subjected to a neutron fluence to determine the sensitivity of the DBRs. The samples were irradiated at Ohio State University's 500 kW research reactor. Relative and absolute reflectance measurements were taken before and after each irradiation over a spectral band of 530 880 µm. Relative reflectance measurements showed that the irradiation did not cause any spectral shift over seven decades of neutron fluences. The reflectivity of the DBRs decreased from their initial measurements after being irradiated. The …

Identification Of Molecular Laser Transitions Using The Finite Element Method, Matthew C. Smitham Dec 1995

Identification Of Molecular Laser Transitions Using The Finite Element Method, Matthew C. Smitham

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a continuation of a previous effort which developed a finite element solution of Schrodinger's Equation. The purpose of this research is to extend this previous work, and develop a chemical laser engineering tool for the identification of transition lines. Identification of laser transitions for a new chemical gain medium requires knowledge of Einstein's Coefficients. These transitions rates can be obtained by solving Schrodinger's Equation for diatomic molecules using the method of finite elements. Experimental vibrational eigenvalues for a given electronic state are used to determine the molecular potential surface which yields the closest numerical result. A non-linear …

Experimental Investigation And Computer Modeling Of Optical Switching In Distributed Bragg Reflector And Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser Structures, Richard J. Bagnell Dec 1995

Experimental Investigation And Computer Modeling Of Optical Switching In Distributed Bragg Reflector And Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser Structures, Richard J. Bagnell

Theses and Dissertations

The optical switching capabilities of Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) structures, including Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) are examined. Reflectivity switching is demonstrated using both thermal and carrier generated effects to alter the DBR/VCSEL layers' refractive indices. Optical bistability is demonstrated at room temperature, under CW photopumped excitation. The optical bistability hysteresis is controllable by spectral location of the pump on the stop band edge. In the VCSEL, reflective bistability is also evidenced; additionally, this bistability is accompanied by a bistability in the VCSEL lasing output intensity, spot size, and wavelength. Modeling of the DBR/VCSEL thermally induced bistability was accomplished …

Thermal Stresses In End-Heated Layered Media, Jerry R. Couick Dec 1995

Thermal Stresses In End-Heated Layered Media, Jerry R. Couick

Theses and Dissertations

Thermal stresses in semi-infinite layered beams heated on the end are calculated using an extension to simple bimetallic thermostat theory. Recently, researchers have used the concept of interfacial compliance to determine interlaminar stresses in a simple thermostat of finite length subjected to a uniform temperature increase. In the present work, the thermostat theory is extended to apply to the beams of interest. A closed-form solution to the problem is obtained. It is not applicable within about one beam thickness (St Venant boundary region) of the end. Various classes of layered materials are analyzed to determine if significant stresses exist outside …

A Monte Carlo Analysis Of Computerized Tomography, Karyl J. Davis Dec 1995

A Monte Carlo Analysis Of Computerized Tomography, Karyl J. Davis

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to model a computerized tomography device (CT) using Monte Carlo methods to determine the scattered radiation spectrum inside and the dose outside the suite at Wright-Patterson Medical Center and at a generic suite to non-occupational personnel. This was driven by the recent inclusion of the most recent NCRP recommended dose limits into 10CFR20 of 50 mSv, occupational; 1 mSv; non-occupational continuous exposure; and 5 mSv, infrequent exposure. The rotating fan beam of the CT was modeled for MCNP, a general-purpose Monte Carlo n-particle transport modeL The CT target was a standard human phantom defined …

Effects Of Ammonium Perchlorate On The Thyroid Hormone Levels Of The Sprague-Dawley Rat, James H. King Jr. Dec 1995

Effects Of Ammonium Perchlorate On The Thyroid Hormone Levels Of The Sprague-Dawley Rat, James H. King Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to determine the threshold dose for ammonium perchlorate (AP) in the Sprague-Dawley rat. No dose response data exist for AP and the EPA has studied literature on the subject of perchlorates to determine a provisional reference dose. The Perchiorate Group, a consortium of DoD and industry representatives, believes this provisional reference dose is too conservative. This experiment was executed to provide dose response data on which to base a more accurate reference dose. The study consisted of eight groups of 12 Sprague-Dawley rats, six male and six female, which were exposed to incremental doses …

Application Of Mixed-Norm Optimal Control To A Multi-Objective Active Suspension Problem, John B. Allison Dec 1995

Application Of Mixed-Norm Optimal Control To A Multi-Objective Active Suspension Problem, John B. Allison

Theses and Dissertations

Mixed norm optimal control synthesis is used to solve a multiobjective suspension problem. The objective is to develop a controller for an active suspension system onboard a tractor semitrailer vehicle. The problem is first approached by using H2 and H∞ optimization. It is shown that by combining both techniques into one mixed norm optimization method, it is possible to exploit the strengths of each norm to provide superior performance. Two H2/H∞ designs were completed. One design concentrated on optimal performance at one design condition. The second design concentrated on providing the best performance possible at a medium …

Numerical Simulation Of Supersonic Turbulent Boundary Layer Flow Under The Influence Of Mild Pressure Gradients, Eric T. Fick Dec 1995

Numerical Simulation Of Supersonic Turbulent Boundary Layer Flow Under The Influence Of Mild Pressure Gradients, Eric T. Fick

Theses and Dissertations

Mach 2.9 boundary layer flow (Re/m ≈ 1.75x107) under the influence of mild pressure gradients is studied numerically. Baldwin-Lomax and k - ω turbulence models are incorporated into a cell centered finite volume flow solver and the results are compared with hot wire anemometry and Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) measurements obtained for the same geometries in the AFIT Mach 2.9 wind tunnel. Agreement between the present simulations obtained with the k - ω turbulence model and experimental velocity profiles is excellent in all test sections. Nondimensional turbulent shear stress predictions closely match experimental data in the …

Experimental Investigation Of A Supersonic Turbulent Boundary Layer With Adverse Pressure Gradient, Chad S. Hale

Theses and Dissertations

Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) measurements were made to quantify the effect of adverse pressure gradient on the compressible turbulent flow structure in a Mach 2.9 boundary layer (Re/m= 1.75 x 107). Measurements included profiles of 2-D mean velocities, turbulence intensities, Reynolds shear stresses, intermittency, flatness and skewness. In addition, mean strain rates were also measured. The boundary layer measurements were acquired for both flat plate and compression ramp models. LDV measurements were made at two locations on the compression ramp model at 68 cm and 71 cm downstream of the nozzle throat. At these locations, Β …

Prediction Of An Axial Compressor Stage Characteristic From A One-Point Measurement, Shahnaz M. Punjani Dec 1995

Prediction Of An Axial Compressor Stage Characteristic From A One-Point Measurement, Shahnaz M. Punjani

Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on predicting axial compressor stage characteristics using a single performance point comprised of mass flow, temperature and pressure rise coefficients obtained in experimental testing and a generic stage temperature characteristic. A new temperature characteristic is generated using a mapping technique where changes in stage blade angles are iterated from assumptions of free vortex flow and constant increment of flow turning angle with increased flow incidence. If additional data corresponding to the new curve are available, the characteristic is adjusted using non-linear least squares estimation, Essentially, the modified mapped curve results from a re-estimated change in the stator …

Numerical Study Of A Transpiration Cooled Rocket Nozzle, Jay A. Landis Dec 1995

Numerical Study Of A Transpiration Cooled Rocket Nozzle, Jay A. Landis

Theses and Dissertations

This study proved that transpiration cooling provides a better cooling scheme than regenerative cooling for long operating duration, liquid-fueled rocket engine nozzles. This proof was made on the basis of maximum wall temperature. This study compared transpiration cooling to regenerative cooling in the throat region of the Space Shuttle Main Engine Main Combustion Chamber. The study also analyzed the effects of porosity, solid thermal conductivity, and porous sphere size on a porous wall made of packed spheres. The transpiration cooled nozzle operated 35% cooler than a regeneratively cooled nozzle, but the temperature gradient at the hot gas surface was 72 …

Adaptive And Fixed Wavelet Features For Narrowband Signal Classification, Anthony J. Pohl Dec 1995

Adaptive And Fixed Wavelet Features For Narrowband Signal Classification, Anthony J. Pohl

Theses and Dissertations

The application of the multiresolution analysis developed by Mallat to signal classification by Pati and Krishnaprasad and Szu, et al, is further explored in this thesis. Several different wavelet based feature extraction and classification systems are developed and implemented. Methods which rely on the traditional dyadic wavelet decomposition and on the adaptive wavelet representation are presented. Each of the classification systems is implemented for a labeled data set of narrowband signals. Finally, classification results on the full data set and on low frequency Fourier coefficients are provided as baseline comparisons for our work.

A Point Model Of Aquifer Cleanup With A Distribution Of First-Order Rate Parameters, Jon E. Hodge Dec 1995

A Point Model Of Aquifer Cleanup With A Distribution Of First-Order Rate Parameters, Jon E. Hodge

Theses and Dissertations

Many try modeling groundwater contaminant transport to predict it. Is this possible with rate-limited processes, and under what conditions? On occasion, cleanups go slower than predicted (tailing) and hazardous concentrations reappear after cleanup is thought complete (rebound). Rate-limited transport is blamed by many. When immobile water is present, diffusion from varied sizes and shapes of immobile regions can cause varied rate limitations (due to varied diffusion path lengths). Although known, most modelers represent these varied rate-limiting processes with a single 'representative' rate-parameter. This can yield poor predictions for long-term experiments, and the parameter is generally time and pump-rate dependent. This …

Photoluminescence And Electroluminescence Of Erbium And Neodymium Implanted Semiconductors, James R. Hunter Dec 1995

Photoluminescence And Electroluminescence Of Erbium And Neodymium Implanted Semiconductors, James R. Hunter

Theses and Dissertations

Low temperature photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) measurements were used to study the excitation of erbium- and neodymium-implanted GaAs and AlxGa1-xAs (x=0. 1, 0.3) pn-junctions. The rare-earth (RE) emissions were investigated as a function of ion dose, aluminum mole fraction, laser excitation power, and applied forward bias voltage for the implanted samples. Low temperature PL was also measured from Er doped silicon grown by the metalorganic chemical vapor-phase deposition (MOCVD) method using various growth parameters.. The MOCVD-grown Si samples were studied as a function of metalorganic source temperature, silane (SiH4) flow, growth time, and …

Analysis And Interpretation Of Ion Data Associated With Neutral Gas Releases In The Earth's Ionosphere, Timothy M. Shadid Dec 1995

Analysis And Interpretation Of Ion Data Associated With Neutral Gas Releases In The Earth's Ionosphere, Timothy M. Shadid

Theses and Dissertations

Barium and strontium release experiments were conducted throughout 1991 from the Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite (CRRES) to study both natural and man-made disturbances in the earth's ionosphere. A mass spectrometer on the spacecraft counted the Ba and Sr ions as the cloud expanded. In this study, data from the G-1 (in sunlight) and G-11b (in darkness) releases were modeled to understand the source of the ion signals. The model reproduced the Ba+ sun data well assuming photoionization (τ = 28 s) was the primary ionization mechanism. However, it was not able to account for the remaining ion …

Micromirror Array Control Of A Phase-Locked Laser Diode Array, Carl J. Christensen Dec 1995

Micromirror Array Control Of A Phase-Locked Laser Diode Array, Carl J. Christensen

Theses and Dissertations

A ten element micromirror array has been designed, fabricated, and employed to control the far field irradiance pattern of a phase locked laser diode array. The laser array used in this experiment was a ten element, gain guided array lasing at a nominal wavelength of 828 nm and operating in the it out of phase supermode. The laser's near field irradiance was imaged onto a micromirror array, where the it phase differences between adjacent laser elements were corrected. This was accomplished by moving the micromirrors with individually applied voltages. The result was the desirable single lobed far field pattern, placing …

Objectism 3.0: A Software Architecture For The Development Of Portable Visual Simulation Applications, Shawn M. Hannan Dec 1995

Objectism 3.0: A Software Architecture For The Development Of Portable Visual Simulation Applications, Shawn M. Hannan

Theses and Dissertations

A visual simulation software architecture is a reusable design for visual simulation applications. This thesis effort was the third stage in an ongoing refinement of such an architecture, named ObjectSim. The primary goals of this stage were to improve the architecture by eliminating its dependence on two platform-specific graphics libraries (named GL and Performer, from Silicon Graphics, Inc.), and to examine the potential for expanding the architecture to accommodate distributed simulations. The effort resulted in a new version of the architecture which allows the development of visual simulation applications which take full advantage of the aforementioned libraries without calling those …

The Automated Wingman: An Airborne Companion For Users Of Dis Compatible Flight Simulators, Mark M. Edwards Dec 1995

The Automated Wingman: An Airborne Companion For Users Of Dis Compatible Flight Simulators, Mark M. Edwards

Theses and Dissertations

A major problem encountered by users of distributed virtual environments is the lack of simulators available to populate these environments. This problem is usually remedied by using computer generated entities. Unfortunately, these entities often lack adequate human behavior and are readily identified as non-human. This violates the realism premise of distributed virtual reality and is a major problem, especially in training situations. This thesis addresses the problem by presenting a computer generated entity called the Automated Wingman. The Automated Wingman is a semi-automated computer generated aircraft simulator that operates under the control of a designated lead simulator and integrates distributed …

Probabilistic Knowledge Base Validation, Howard T. Gleason Dec 1995

Probabilistic Knowledge Base Validation, Howard T. Gleason

Theses and Dissertations

Our work develops a new methodology and tool for the validation of probabilistic knowledge bases throughout their lifecycle. The methodology minimizes user interaction by automatically modifying incorrect knowledge; only the occurrence of incomplete knowledge involves interaction. These gains are realized by combining and modifying techniques borrowed from rule-based and artificial neural network validation strategies. The presented methodology is demonstrated through BVAL, which is designed for a new knowledge representation, the Bayesian Knowledge Base. This knowledge representation accommodates incomplete knowledge while remaining firmly grounded in probability theory.

Semantic Interpretation Of An Artificial Neural Network, Stanley D. Kinderknecht Dec 1995

Semantic Interpretation Of An Artificial Neural Network, Stanley D. Kinderknecht

Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in machine learning theory have opened the door for applications to many difficult problem domains. One area that has achieved great success for stock market analysis/prediction is artificial neural networks. However, knowledge embedded in the neural network is not easily translated into symbolic form. Recent research, exploring the viability of merging artificial neural networks with traditional rule-based expert systems, has achieved limited success. In particular, extracting production (IF.. THEN) rules from a trained neural net based on connection weights provides a valid set of rules only when neuron outputs are close to 0 or 1 (e.g. the output …

Deriving Optimal Solutions From Incomplete Knowledge Bases, Shawn A. Northrop Dec 1995

Deriving Optimal Solutions From Incomplete Knowledge Bases, Shawn A. Northrop

Theses and Dissertations

Many real world domains cannot be represented using Bayesian Networks due to the need for complete probability tables and acyclic knowledge. However, Bayesian Knowledge Bases (BKBs) are a viable method for representing these incomplete domains, but very little research has been performed on inferencing with them. This paper presents three inference engines for extracting optimal solutions from three distinct BKB subclasses: singly- connected, multiply-connected with mutually exclusive cycles, and cyclic. The singly-connected inference engine has a worst case polynomial run time. Performance improvement techniques for increasing inference engine speed are discussed, in addition to a new tool for measuring incompleteness …

An Assessment Of The Impact Of Fuel Jettisoning Events Using Simulation And Impact Models, Jeffrey M. Todd Dec 1995

An Assessment Of The Impact Of Fuel Jettisoning Events Using Simulation And Impact Models, Jeffrey M. Todd

Theses and Dissertations

Work has been accomplished to determine the impact of jettisoned fuel when it reaches the surface. While previous work indicates that jettisoning JP-4 jet fuel results in a negligible ground fall impact, the impact of jettisoning lower volatile JP-8 jet fuel has not been thoroughly characterized. Several efforts have been made to mathematically model the evaporation, advection, and dispersion of the plume of fuel as it travels to the surface. The AFIT Fuel Jettisoning Model, the Fuel Jettisoning Simulation Model, and Fuel-Dumping Impact Assessment Model were evaluated and compared to assess the impact of jettisoned JP-8 jet fuel. Additionally, the …

Evaluation Of The Air Force Installation Restoration Advisory System, Dale M. Fox Dec 1995

Evaluation Of The Air Force Installation Restoration Advisory System, Dale M. Fox

Theses and Dissertations

This research is intended to evaluate the Air Force's Installation Restoration Advisory System Workstation software and documentation. Groundwater modeling is the biggest aid to Air Force Installation Restoration decision makers in making their conclusions about what to do with their hazardous waste sites where the groundwater is contaminated. The Advisory System aids the user in determining if a site poses a potential problem, and if so assists the user in selecting an appropriate groundwater transport model. The decision of what type of model is most suitable is based upon the user's conceptual site model and the decision is made by …

Macroscale Diffusion-Limited Sorption Modeling--A Preliminary Modeling Exercise For A Dover Afb Site, Jason T. Herman

Theses and Dissertations

A modification was made to the USGS SUTRA code which allowed the simulation of macro scale diffusion effects from specific layers. This modification utilized a split-operator finite element numerical technique to incorporate the macroscale diffusion. The code was applied to a conceptual site developed from a field site at Dover AFB, DL Simulations were done to compare the modified code to the unmodified code which clearly showed the modified code as a closer representation of reality. Simulations were also done to study the effects of pulsed and continuous pumping within the time frame of a field experiment at Dover. These …

Neural Network Analysis Of Chemical Compounds In Nonrebreathing Fisher-344 Rat Breath, Robert E. Sackett Jr. Dec 1995

Neural Network Analysis Of Chemical Compounds In Nonrebreathing Fisher-344 Rat Breath, Robert E. Sackett Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This research applies statistical and artificial neural network analysis to data obtained from measurement of organic compounds in the breath of a Fisher-344 rat. The Research Triangle Institute (RTI) developed a breath collection system for use with rats in order to collect and determine volatile organic compounds (VOCs) exhaled. The RTI study tested the hypothesis that VOCs, including endogenous compounds, in breath can serve as markers to exposure to various chemical compounds such as drugs, pesticides, or carcinogens normally foreign to living organisms. From a comparative analysis of chromatograms, it was concluded that the administration of carbon tetrachloride dramatically altered …

Geostatistical Analysis Of Hydraulic Conductivity In Heterogeneous Aquifers, Craig S. Biondo Dec 1995

Geostatistical Analysis Of Hydraulic Conductivity In Heterogeneous Aquifers, Craig S. Biondo

Theses and Dissertations

Observations of the spatial variability of hydraulic conductivity of the heterogeneous alluvial aquifer at Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi are analyzed using parametric geostatistical approaches. Field studies have revealed that the heterogeneity of the aquifer hydraulic conductivity field controls the movement and dispersion of groundwater solutes. Therefore, a means of quantifying spatial variability is essential for the application of flow and solute transport models to practical problems. Application of these models requires a large number of hydraulic conductivity measurements. Geostatistical analysis and kriging estimation procedures assist in providing these large numbers of values when sampling designs have provided sparse …

Evaluating The Feasibility Of Sequential Indicator Simulation In Reproducing Spatial Connectivity In A Heterogeneous Transmissivity Field, D. Duane Kenyon Dec 1995

Evaluating The Feasibility Of Sequential Indicator Simulation In Reproducing Spatial Connectivity In A Heterogeneous Transmissivity Field, D. Duane Kenyon

Theses and Dissertations

A Non-Parametric estimation technique was used to simulate realizations of a heterogeneous transmissivity field based upon sampled values from three different sampling scenarios. These realizations were compared to output from a parametric estimation technique with respect to truth as defined by an exhaustive data set of 6,000 transmissivity values. Estimated transmissivity fields were then used as input into a flow model from which fields of heads and specific discharges were obtained and compared. Given the financial limitations imposed upon the number and quality of samples reasonably available, Sequential Indicator Simulation, a non-parametric technique, was shown to be of considerable value …
