Concept Design And Optimization Of Msw Management System, James R. Palmer
Concept Design And Optimization Of Msw Management System, James R. Palmer
Theses and Dissertations
The maximum recovery of recyclables from municipal solid waste (MSW) using material recovery facility (MRF) technologies is determined. Two waste streams at Spangdahlem AB, Germany are analyzed; stationary container wastes and commingled recyclables. Three schemes are considered, one for each waste stream, and one for both. Multi-criteria decision making is the methodology. The criteria are recovery and annual benefit minus cost (B-C). Recovery is determined using the recovery factor transfer function of Diaz et al. (1982). Each technology, or unit operation, in a sequence is independent because particle size distribution of each waste component is considered. B-C is based on …
Quality Function Deployment From An Operations Research Perspective, Eve M. Burke
Quality Function Deployment From An Operations Research Perspective, Eve M. Burke
Theses and Dissertations
The methodology of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is compared to operations analysis standards. Of special concern is how Air Combat Command (ACC) uses QFD for the Modernization Planning Process (MPP). ACC digresses from the traditional use of QFD for incorporating quality into manufacturing processes to use it as a planning tool. ACC's goal in implementing QFD is to incorporate the demands of the Air Force mission into the modernization planning effort. ACC's use of QFD to identify and quantify current deficiencies and quantify the value of alternative future solutions has led to the investigation of inconsistencies with QFD, both generally …
Portfolio Selection Of Innovative Technologies Via Life Cycle Cost Modeling, Scott C. Naylor
Portfolio Selection Of Innovative Technologies Via Life Cycle Cost Modeling, Scott C. Naylor
Theses and Dissertations
High technology firms are faced with the dilemma of deciding which products to develop, which generations of technology to pass over, and which products to skip entirely. As competition among these firms increases and the life cycles of technological products shorten, there exists a great deal of pressure to bring products rapidly to the market. As a result, recouping the costs of research and development (R & D) and earning a profit becomes increasingly uncertain. Traditional life cycle cost models do not directly address shortened life cycles, time to market, or learning curve issues; all are critical factors in the …
A New Sequential Goodness-Of-Fit Test For A Family Of Two Parameter Gamma Distributions With Known Shape Based On Skewness And Q-Statistic, Jae Suk Park
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this research is to develop a new goodness-of-fit test for the gamma distribution. The gamma distribution is widely used for reliability and failure time estimations in the real world. Several methods to measure the fit of data to a hypothesized distribution are commonly used such as the chi-squared test, and Anderson- Darling test. The most important aspect of these tests is how well the results reflect the distribution family. This research will use the sequential test with skewness and Q- statistic as test statistics for fitting a gamma distribution. The main idea of a sequential test is …
Band Structure Anisotropy In Semiconductor Quantum Wells, Steven J. Novotny
Band Structure Anisotropy In Semiconductor Quantum Wells, Steven J. Novotny
Theses and Dissertations
The focus of this research is an investigation of energy band anisotropy in simple quantum well structures. This anisotropy results from the asymmetry of the periodic potential within the crystal lattice. For sufficiently high doping levels, band structure anisotropy is expected to play an important role in the evaluation of the electronic and optical properties of the quantum well structures. The analysis uses a model based on a 6x6 Luttinger-Kohn k.p approach for bulk material valence band structure together with the Envelope Function Approximation. The model is used to analyze Si/SiGe, AlGaAs/GaAs, and GaAs/InGaAs quantum wells for the 001 and …
Robust Eigenstructure Assignment Using Positive Definite Output Feedback Control, Adam G. Harris
Robust Eigenstructure Assignment Using Positive Definite Output Feedback Control, Adam G. Harris
Theses and Dissertations
This research investigates a method of eigenstructure assignment for the classes of controllers known as positive definite output feedback control. The research began with a closed loop system with output feedback control that utilizes a collocated actuator-sensor pair. It is shown that this system is robust because it is globally stable for positive definite feedback. Analytical analysis is then completed to determine gains that minimize a cost function that is the error between the desired and achievable (assuming positive definite output feedback) eigenstructure. Examples are given at the end of the thesis to validate the computer code and theory results.

Exploring The Management Of Outsourcing And The Determination Of Civil Engineering Minimum Manning Numbers In Order To Optimize Air Force Benefits, David J. Anason
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the relationship between peacetime and wartime tasks for Air Force Civil Engineering career fields in regard to outsourcing. Relevant literature in civilian sector outsourcing techniques is then studied to determine how they decide on what to outsource and what to keep insourced. Peacetime tasks performed by individual career fields are correlated with the wartime tasks to determine if there is any valuable wartime training gained from the completion of peacetime work orders. Several interviews completed with Air Force Civil Engineer readiness experts to evaluate an importance factor for each career field wartime mission. This importance factor and …
Two-Stage Stochastic Linear Programming With Recourse: A Characterization Of Local Regions Using Response Surface Methodology, David T. Mills
Two-Stage Stochastic Linear Programming With Recourse: A Characterization Of Local Regions Using Response Surface Methodology, David T. Mills
Theses and Dissertations
The LP recourse problem applies to two-stage optimization problems where uncertainty in resource availability of the second stage hinders informed decision making. The recourse function affords a way to compensate "later" for an error in prediction "now." The literature provides a rich body of work on the optimization of such problems, but little research has been accomplished regarding the characterization of the surface in the local region of optimality, in particular sensitivity analysis. A decision maker faced with considerations other than the modeled objective function must be presented with a way to estimate the impact of operating at non-optimal decision …

Electrical Characterization Of Ion-Implanted 4h-Silicon Carbide, Christian P. Morath
Theses and Dissertations
Electrical characterization has been performed on ion-implanted p-type 4H-SiC to assess the activation efficiency and implantation-related damage recrystallization with the intention of developing an implantation/annealing scheme. Low doped (Na - Nd = 5x1015cm3 epitaxial p-type layers grown by MOCVD were implanted with Al or B at doses ranging from 1x1013 to 1x1014/cm2 at room temperature or 500°C. The electrical technique of Temperature Dependent Hall Effect (TDHE) indicated that Al and B act as shallow acceptors 4H-SiC with ionization energies of ~252 and ~285 meV, respectively. The highest activation efficiency for Al and B …
A Constructive Induction Approach To Computer Immunology, Kelley J. Cardinale, Hugh M. O'Donnell
A Constructive Induction Approach To Computer Immunology, Kelley J. Cardinale, Hugh M. O'Donnell
Theses and Dissertations
With the increasing birth rate of new viruses and the rise in interconnectivity and interoperability among computers, the burden of detecting and destroying computer viruses is severe. This research integrated four domains: computer virus detection, human immunology, computer immunology and an automated form of machine learning called constructive induction. First, a Computer Health System, based on the public health system, was defined to improve the 'global' approach to computer virus protection. Second, a computer immune model, based on the human immune system, was defined to improve the 'local' approach to virus detection. Third, the detection component of this computer immune …

Multi-Discipline Network Vulnerability Assessment, Karilynne Wallace
Theses and Dissertations
Air Force Space Command has a mission to provide real-time, survivable, and enduring communications, surveillance, environmental monitoring, navigation, and warning....according to Air Force Space Handbook - A War Fighters Guide to Space. In order to prevent disruption of the critical networks in Space Command, a vulnerability assessment must be performed. The set of components called a vulnerability set, which could cause network disruption, must be identified and prioritized. In order to move beyond subjective prioritization, implementation of a quantitative methodology that measures the value of each vulnerability set is needed. This thesis proposes a technique for vulnerability assessment of a …
Analysis Of Usaf Battlelabs' Communication Infrastructure Over Various Protocols, Rocky A. Favorito, David M. Mcillece
Analysis Of Usaf Battlelabs' Communication Infrastructure Over Various Protocols, Rocky A. Favorito, David M. Mcillece
Theses and Dissertations
As a result of the doctrines exposed in the Air Force's "Global Engagement: A Vision for the 21st Century Air Force," the concept of a "Battlelab" was devised to support and develop the key warfighting capabilities needed in the next century. Although geographically separated, these labs must have the capability to exchange information with each other in a "Virtual Battlelab Environment" (VBE). Although many types of data will be exchanged, only variable-bit-rate (VBR) video and distributed interactive simulation (DIS) traffic are modeled in the VBE. The research described in this thesis utilizes a systems engineering approach to investigate the performance …

SIMSAT (the SIMulation SATellite) is an AFIT-sponsored program to develop a laboratory-based physical satellite simulator. SIMSAT supports experimentation in areas of attitude control, precision pointing, and vibration suppression. SIMSAT development began with the purchase of a three-axis gas bearing which simulates a torque-free space environment. SIMSAT subsystems provide power, attitude control, telemetry, and structural support to experimental payloads. Project challenges included integration of attitude control software/hardware, high-output power storage devices, remote communications, high-frequency data collection, structural design, and computer display outputs.
Design And Analysis Of On-Orbit Servicing Architectures For The Global Positioning System Constellation, Gregg A. Leisman, Adam D. Wallen
Design And Analysis Of On-Orbit Servicing Architectures For The Global Positioning System Constellation, Gregg A. Leisman, Adam D. Wallen
Theses and Dissertations
Satellites are the only major Air Force systems with no maintenance, routine repair, or upgrade capability. The result is expensive satellites and a heavy reliance on access to space. At the same time, satellite design is maturing and reducing the cost to produce satellites with longer design lives. This works against the ability to keep the technology on satellites current without frequent replacement of those satellites. The Global Positioning System Joint Program Office realizes that it must change its mode of operations to quickly meet new requirements while minimizing cost. The possibility of using robotic servicing architectures to solve these …
East Coast Abort Modeling With Rtls Elimination For The Space Shuttle-Liquid Fly Back Booster Launch System, Thomas L. Miller Jr.
East Coast Abort Modeling With Rtls Elimination For The Space Shuttle-Liquid Fly Back Booster Launch System, Thomas L. Miller Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates the ability of the proposed Liquid Fly Back Booster, a replacement for the Space Shuttle's Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs), to eliminate the need for the Return to Launch Site (RTLS) abort mode. A Fortran model of a nominal launch trajectory was perturbed to simulate a single Space Shuttle Main Engine-out (SSME-out) abort scenario at different times in the launch with the goal being to abort to the southern most landing site possible. The model accounts for vehicle lift, drag, dynamic pressure, throttling times and includes atmospheric effects to enhance fidelity. Results show the RTLS abort mode can …
Progressive Failure Analysis Of Composite Panels, Stephen M. Spottswood
Progressive Failure Analysis Of Composite Panels, Stephen M. Spottswood
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this research was to determine the physical response, including material failure, of a curved composite panel designed to resist transverse loading. The cause of the material failure, in the form of delamination, fiber and/or matrix failure, was determined through various criterion based on non-linear movement using a finite element analysis technique. Data generated both with and without the addition of progressive failure criteria, was compared with previously published experimental data, noting where the theory diverges from the experimental results. The inclusion of various failure criterion, to include maximum stress, Lee, and Hashin, provided a more realistic representation …
Use Of Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy To Determine Desorption Coefficients Of Trichioroethylene From Powdered Soils, Jay H. Foil
Use Of Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy To Determine Desorption Coefficients Of Trichioroethylene From Powdered Soils, Jay H. Foil
Theses and Dissertations
This laboratory thesis investigated the applicability of reflectance spectroscopy as a tool to measure desorption rates by directly observing the change in trichloroethylene bound to surface sites. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy holds the promise of being a faster technique with minimal sample preparation time. Reflectance spectroscopy's dependence on the surface of the sample is its greatest advantage, as well as its greatest disadvantage. Both high and low resolution scans were made of different soil samples contaminated by trichloroethylene. After the technique of spectral subtraction was used, potential TCE signals were observed from the dolomitic limestone sample. Unfortunately, due to the low …
Numerical Solutions To The Two Dimensional Boltzmann Equation, Christopher G. Smithtro
Numerical Solutions To The Two Dimensional Boltzmann Equation, Christopher G. Smithtro
Theses and Dissertations
A strict kinetic, two-dimensional model of the electron kinetics within a glow discharge positive column is developed. The problem is solved in cylindrical geometry using the standard two-term Legendre expansion of the electron velocity distribution function. The model establishes a steady state solution, such that the net ionization rate is exactly balanced by the wall loss. In addition to a thorough analytic development, we present the numerical techniques used to solve the resulting elliptic partial differential equation, including an efficient method to treat sparse banded matrices. The model is validated against published results, local and nonlocal kinetic approximations, and a …
Inelastic Scattering Matrix Elements For The Collision B (2P1/2) + H2(J) → B (2P3/2) + H2(J'), Thomas A. Niday
Inelastic Scattering Matrix Elements For The Collision B (2P1/2) + H2(J) → B (2P3/2) + H2(J'), Thomas A. Niday
Theses and Dissertations
Initial efforts to characterize the scattering dynamics of B + H2 focus on computing scattering matrix elements for the fine structure transition B (2P1/2) --> B (2P3/2) in collisions with H2, allowing for rotational excitation. Using a new application of the time dependent Channel Packet Method (CPM), reactant and product wave packets are prepared in the asymptotic limit on the B (2P1/2) and B (2P3/2) surfaces. They are propagated using the split operator method together wit a unitary transformation between the …
Laser Beam Combining And Cleanup Via Stimulated Brillouin Scattering In Multi-Mode Optical Fibers, Blake C. Rodgers
Laser Beam Combining And Cleanup Via Stimulated Brillouin Scattering In Multi-Mode Optical Fibers, Blake C. Rodgers
Theses and Dissertations
The main objective of this thesis was to demonstrate the feasibility of combining and cleaning up multiple laser beams via Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) in a multi-mode optical fiber. Beam combining via SBS in an optical fiber is of interest because of the low SBS threshold power in an optical fiber allowing low power diode laser beams to be combined into one high power beam. SBS theory and some of the important historical results are described briefly. The experimental results clearly indicate that SBS in multi-mode optical fiber can indeed combine laser beams and clean up the beams at the …
Characterization Of The Double Scatter Spectrum In Multiplexed Compton Scatter Tomography, David W. Gerts
Characterization Of The Double Scatter Spectrum In Multiplexed Compton Scatter Tomography, David W. Gerts
Theses and Dissertations
The Multiplexed Compton Scatter Tomograph (MCST) uses single back-scattered photons to image electron density in aluminum. A source of error in this imaging technique is the presence of multiple scatters. This thesis studies the double scatter spectrum as an approximation of the multiple scatter spectrum. A deterministic code called Monte Carlo Double Scatter (MOCADS) was developed to investigate the double scatter spectrum. The code includes calculations of the Rayleigh scatter, Compton scatter, Doppler broadening effects of the spectrum, and polarization effects following the Compton scatter. The Doppler broadening portion of the code was validated by a deterministic code called Scatgram. …
Double Layer Effects On Shock Wave Propagation, Shannon L. Walker
Double Layer Effects On Shock Wave Propagation, Shannon L. Walker
Theses and Dissertations
An analysis and assessment of two mechanisms in plasma shock interactions was conducted under conditions typically encountered in a weakly ionized glow discharge. The mechanisms of a spatially-dependent electron temperature and additional electron impact ionization at the shock front were examined for effects on shock structure and propagation. These mechanisms were incorporated into an existing one-dimensional, time-dependent, fluid dynamics code that uses the Riemami problem as a basis and numerically solves the Euler equations for two fluids: the neutral gas and the charged component. The spatial variation in electron temperature was modeled as a shock-centered rise in temperature. Additional ionization …
Performance Analysis Of Tcp Enhancements In Satellite Data Networks, Ren H. Broyles
Performance Analysis Of Tcp Enhancements In Satellite Data Networks, Ren H. Broyles
Theses and Dissertations
This research examines two proposed enhancements to the well-known Transport Control Protocol (TCP) in the presence of noisy communication links. The Multiple Pipes protocol is an application-level adaptation of the standard TCP protocol, where several TCP links cooperate to transfer data. The Space Communication Protocol Standard - Transport Protocol (SCPS-TP) modifies TCP to optimize performance in a satellite environment. While SCPS-TP has inherent advantages that allow it to deliver data more rapidly than Multiple Pipes, the protocol, when optimized for operation in a high-error environment, is not compatible with legacy TCP systems, and requires changes to the TCP specification. This …
A Trade-Off Analysis For Quality Of Service In Real-Time Voice Over Ip, Tuncel Altunbasak
A Trade-Off Analysis For Quality Of Service In Real-Time Voice Over Ip, Tuncel Altunbasak
Theses and Dissertations
During the past several years, there has been a significant increase in interest in the use of packetized audio over packet-switched networks due to economic and technical feasibility. However, distribution of real-time voice traffic is basically different from traditional reliable data transfer since continuous voice is sensitive to end-to-end delays and variations of delays. The distribution of continuous voice across a packet-switched network requires consideration of encoding schemas, end-to-end network delays, delay variations, and packet loss, all of which significantly affect the playback quality at the receiving side. There is a trade-off among these factors that affects the quality of …
Maintenance Resources Evaluation Technique, Jorge Guarnieri
Maintenance Resources Evaluation Technique, Jorge Guarnieri
Theses and Dissertations
The Argentine Air Force (AAF) has undertaken the task of reviewing its logistics doctrine with the aim of supporting its mission on the basis of better-designed resource structures. The adequate sizing of logistics support is essential to obtain the desired military capability, while optimizing resource use. A decision support tool tailored to the AAF environment is needed to size that logistics support. This research developed a mathematical logistics model to evaluate the mean number of aircraft that can be restored in a given time interval between consecutive sorties, for a given maintenance resources mix and base physical geometry. This maintenance …
Transforming Aggregate Object-Oriented Formal Specifications To Code, John A. Kissack
Transforming Aggregate Object-Oriented Formal Specifications To Code, John A. Kissack
Theses and Dissertations
The feasibility of a transformational formal-based software engineering tool has been the focus of AFIT research for several years. Until now, the main research emphasis has been placed on the individual components that would comprise such a transformational system; therefore, this research demonstrates how a representative collection of aggregate objects would be transformed from specification to code. The research focused on critical integration issues associated with a formal-based software transformation system, such as the source specification, the problem space architecture, design architecture, design transforms, and target software transforms. Software is critical in today's Air Force, yet its specification, design, and …
Target Pose Estimation From Radar Data Using Adaptive Networks, Andrew W. Learn
Target Pose Estimation From Radar Data Using Adaptive Networks, Andrew W. Learn
Theses and Dissertations
his research investigates and extends recent work by J.C. Principe at the University of Florida in target pose estimation using adaptive networks. First, Principe's technique is successfully extended to estimate both azimuth and elevation using SAR images. A network trained and tested using MSTAR data yields mean errors of less than six degrees in azimuth and five degrees in elevation. Second, the technique is applied to high-range resolution radar (HRR) signatures. Ground target (azimuth only) testing yields mean errors of less than 11 degrees for most classes. Air target testing for networks trained and tested on the same aircraft class …
Extensible Multi-Agent System For Heterogeneous Database Association Rule Mining And Unification, Christopher G. Marks
Extensible Multi-Agent System For Heterogeneous Database Association Rule Mining And Unification, Christopher G. Marks
Theses and Dissertations
The Probabilities, Expert System, Knowledge, and Inference (PESKI) System uses the data mining of association rules to fill incompleteness in the knowledge of an expert system. The rules are mined from transactional data sources and then incorporated using an existing link to PESKI. One method of providing a system that will easily allow new data sources to be added is using an information gathering agent-based system. This research first develops a methodology for designing and creating a multi-agent system. It then applies this methodology to design a platform independent means of data mining data sources of any format. The use …
A Java Based Human Computer Interface For A Uav Decision Support Tool Using Conformal Mapping, Randy A. Flood
A Java Based Human Computer Interface For A Uav Decision Support Tool Using Conformal Mapping, Randy A. Flood
Theses and Dissertations
This paper describes the development of the Human Computer Interface (HCI) for a Decision Support System for routing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). This problem is a multi-vehicle routing problem with time-windows. Because of the unique nature of UAVs, a tool is needed to support dynamic re-routing. We solve the problem in two ways. First, we create a UAV Decision Support Tool (UAV DST) that uses a set of Java software objects to display maps and convert between latitude-longitude coordinates and x-y coordinates. Secondly, this library provides the ability for the user to dynamically reoptimize large UAV routing problems through a …

Analysis Of The Applicability Of Video Segmentation To Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Surveillance Video, Bradley L. Pyburn
Theses and Dissertations
The focus of this research is to determine if applying edge detection segmentation (proposed by Ramin Zabih, Justin Miller, and Kevin Mai) to Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) video footage can provide meaningful segments for database storage and retrieval. The edge detection segmentation algorithm is applied to fifty-four UAV video sequences containing visual effects such as abrupt camera changes, camera zooms, motion (rapid and gradual), and cloud cover while varying the frame rate from 5 fps to 30 fps. An analysis of the results is performed to compare actual versus expected outcomes, similar sequences, and scenes with motion, along with explaining …
