Spectral Detection Of Acute Mental Stress With Vis-Swir Hyperspectral Imagery, Elizabeth K. Norvell

Theses and Dissertations

The ability to identify a stressed person is becoming an important aspect across different work environments. Especially in higher-stress career fields, such as first responders and air traffic controllers, mental stress can inhibit a person's ability to accomplish their job. A person's efficiency and psychological state in the work environment can be impeded due to poor mental health. Stress can result in harmful effects on the body, both physically and mentally, including depression, lack of sleep, and fatigue, which can lead to reduced work productivity. Research is being conducted to detect stress in workload-intensive environments. This thesis implements an imaging …

Characterization And Dynamic Analysis Of Long-Cavity Multi-Section Gain-Levered Quantum-Dot Lasers, John R. Schmidt

Theses and Dissertations

This research investigates the impact of different device architectures on the frequency response of long-cavity multi-section quantum-dot lasers. This work focused on a novel 8.3-mm multi-section quantum-dot device which possessed the flexibility to be configured either as a single- or multi-section device having gain-to-modulation section ratios of 14:2 and 15:1. The long-cavity device design facilitated the testing of increased gain-to-modulation section length ratios previously unexplored in the context of the gain-lever effect. The investigation of the gain-lever effect showed improvements to both the modulation efficiency and modulation bandwidth of the device under test. The modulation efficiency and modulation bandwidth were …

Modeling Radioactive Decay Chains With Branching Fraction Uncertainties, Timothy M. Higley Mar 2013

Modeling Radioactive Decay Chains With Branching Fraction Uncertainties, Timothy M. Higley

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a parameter study of the effects of branching fraction uncertainty from nuclear decay on isotope quantities at later times. Development of how to calculate and accurately draw random samples of branching fractions is done. Overall effects as well as isotope quantity uncertainty distributions are also explored. Isotope quantities are calculated using exponential moments methods with transmutation matrices. Uncertainty from both half-lives and branching fractions is carried through these calculations by Monte Carlo methods. Results of the study show that uncertainty from branching fractions dominates most isotopes present from neutron fission after approximately one month. Another result is …

Passive, Low Cost Neutron Detectors For Neutron Diagnostics At The National Ignition Facility, Nathaniel C. Loyd Mar 2013

Passive, Low Cost Neutron Detectors For Neutron Diagnostics At The National Ignition Facility, Nathaniel C. Loyd

Theses and Dissertations

Experimental validation of neutron fluence models of fusion events at the National Ignition Facility is necessary to predict radiation damage to measurement electronics. Due to programmatic and facility limitations, traditional neutron measurement techniques are not well suited for this application. Notably, a low cost and passive measurement technique that provides a permanent record is preferred. A detector was designed using gadolinium oxide contained within an aluminum reservoir. The reservoir is secured by a thin layer of Mylar and x-ray film, and vacuum sealed in a light tight package. In the presence of a thermal neutron flux, the gadolinium atoms absorb …

Analysis Of A Van De Graaff Generator For Emp Direct Current Survivability Testing, Robert J. Kress

Theses and Dissertations

The direct current produced from the Van de Graaff (VDG) at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has been measured and analyzed. The current pulse produced from the VDG is oscillatory. Experimental data show complete damping occurs after 8 oscillations and within 10-6 seconds. The spark gap distance and circuit resistance were varied to determine if the circuit could convert to an overdamped RLC circuit in order to reduce the oscillations. The data establishes that the VDG produces at least 3 full wave Fourier frequencies of: 3, 7, and 15 MHz ± 2.0 MHz, while the first oscillation had …

A linear relationship was observed that corresponded to an output wavelength range of 780.08 nm 0.01 nm to 780.49 nm 0.01 nm with a tuning rate of 6.1 pm/ C for a diode chassis temperature of 37 C. Rubidium D1 fuorescence spectra were recorded as the diode wavelength was scanned across its full range …

Determining Optimal Machine Replacement Events With Periodic Inspection Intervals, Theodore C. Shiveley Mar 2013

Determining Optimal Machine Replacement Events With Periodic Inspection Intervals, Theodore C. Shiveley

Theses and Dissertations

This research will examine the optimal maintenance and replacement policies for a generic machine with periodic inspection intervals. The considered reliability models consist of a single machine that can fail during operation or else may be found to be inoperative during regularly-scheduled maintenance inspections. A distinction will be made between spontaneously-occurring failures during operation and those that are discovered during inspections. Since the elapsed time between inspections is constant, the resulting stochastic reliability process becomes non-Markovian, and thus a Semi-Markov Decision Process (SMDP) framework must be employed in order to determine the cost-optimal stationary policy consisting of repair and replace …

Influence Of Media Size And Flow Rate On The Transport Of Silver Nanoparticles In Saturated Porous Media: Laboratory Experiments And Modeling, Travis J. Meidinger

Theses and Dissertations

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely produced and used. Because of their potential toxicity and the possibility of their release into the environment, it is important to understand the factors involved in their transport; particularly how they may move in groundwater, which is a potential pathway to human and environmental receptors. By passing a solution of 15 mg/L AgNPs with an average size of 17 nm through sand-filled glass columns, this study looks at the physical effects of flow rate and media size on transport. Three different sand sizes ( 0.074, 0.21-0.297, and 0.4-2.0mm) were used, as well as two different …

Using Hysteretic Energy To Evaluate Damping Characteristics Of Hard Coating On Titanium, Colin C. Engebretsen Mar 2013

Using Hysteretic Energy To Evaluate Damping Characteristics Of Hard Coating On Titanium, Colin C. Engebretsen

Theses and Dissertations

Current methods of material damping evaluation consist of bending tests involving half-power bandwidth base excitation or free decay methods measured by laser vibrometer. These methods are accompanied by complex, nonlinear strain evaluation; they are vulnerable to undesired air damping; and they require less than commonplace equipment. The measurement of hysteretic energy loss in axial cyclic loading alleviates these difficulties. By using common tensile testing machines, strain is kept linear and air damping is of no concern. Furthermore, the static test section allows for simplified environmental variation for high temperature or high humidity testing. This study set forth to advance and …

Design Of A Control Moment Gyroscope Attitude Actuation System For The Attitude Control Subsystem Proving Ground, Samuel C. Johnson Mar 2013

Design Of A Control Moment Gyroscope Attitude Actuation System For The Attitude Control Subsystem Proving Ground, Samuel C. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

All spacecraft represent a considerable investment of both time and money. To ensure mission success, testing and validation of all vital systems is crucial to the design process. The attitude control subsystem (ACS) is typically tested thoroughly, to include both hardware and control algorithms. Computer simulations offer a simple and relatively cheap method of predicting the performance of the ACS; however, computer simulations cannot provide the assurances necessary to qualify an ACS hardware configuration or control algorithm spaceworthy. For this reason, physical spacecraft simulators must be used to validate ACS dynamics. Previous research showed there is room for significant improvement …

Experimental Characterization Of The Structural Dynamics And Aero-Structural Sensitivity Of A Hawkmoth Wing Toward The Development Of Design Rules For Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicles, Aaron G. Norris Mar 2013

Experimental Characterization Of The Structural Dynamics And Aero-Structural Sensitivity Of A Hawkmoth Wing Toward The Development Of Design Rules For Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicles, Aaron G. Norris

Theses and Dissertations

A case is made for why the structures discipline must take on a more central role in the research and design of flapping-wing micro-air-vehicles, especially if research trends continue toward bio-inspired, insect-sized flexible wing designs. In making the case, the eigenstructure of the wing emerges as a key structural metric for consideration. But with virtually no structural dynamic data available for actual insect wings, both engineered and computational wing models that have been inspired by biological analogs have no structural truth models to which they can be anchored. An experimental framework is therefore developed herein for performing system identification testing …

Multipactor Discharge In High Power Microwave Systems: Analyzing Effects And Mitigation Through Simulation In Icepic, Robert L. Lloyd

Theses and Dissertations

Single surface multipactor in high power microwave systems was investigated computationally and analytically. The research focused upon understanding the cause and parametric dependence of the multipactor process leading to suggested methods of mitigation. System damage due to reaction was also assessed. All simulations were performed using the PIC code developed by AFRL, known as ICEPIC. In recreating the susceptibility curves that define regions of multipactor growth and decay, a discrepancy was found between previous published results and those observed in the current simulation. This was attributed to previous simulations not accounting for the magnetic component in the electromagnetic radiation incident …

Investigation Into The Ratio Of System Operations And Support Costs To Life-Cycle Costs For Department Of Defense Weapon Systems, Gary L. Jones Mar 2013

Investigation Into The Ratio Of System Operations And Support Costs To Life-Cycle Costs For Department Of Defense Weapon Systems, Gary L. Jones

Theses and Dissertations

As the arsenal of weapons managed by the Department of Defense (DoD) ages, the country's leadership is forced to make decisions regarding what to do with current and projected funding to maintain military defensive and offensive capabilities. The acquisition community at many levels has stated that O&S costs are about 70 percent of the total life-cycle costs of the average system, the other 30 percent being spent in the acquisition phase. This golden ratio does not appear to come from empirical evidence. There has been little research into the actual ratio of O&S-to-acquisition costs. This research found a significant departure …

An Investigation And Analysis Of The Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex In A Vibration Environment, Daniel J. Uribe Mar 2013

An Investigation And Analysis Of The Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex In A Vibration Environment, Daniel J. Uribe

Theses and Dissertations

Forty years of innovations have greatly improved Helmet-Mounted Displays (HMDs) and their integration into military systems. However, a significant issue with HMDs is the effect of vibration and the associated Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex (VOR). When a human’s head is subject to low-frequency vibration, the VOR stabilizes the eye with respect to objects in the external environment. However, this response is inappropriate in HMDs as the display moves with the user’s head and the VOR blurs the image as it is projected on the human retina. Current compensation techniques suggest increasing the size of displayed graphics or text to compensate for the …

Examining The Validity Of Using A Gaussian Schell-Model Source To Model The Scattering Of A Fully Coherent Gaussian Beam From A Rough Impedance Surface, Santasri Basu, Milo W. Hyde Iv, Salvatore J. Cusumano, Michael A. Marciniak, Steven T. Fiorino Mar 2013

Fiorino

Faculty Publications

Military applications that use adaptive optics (AO) often require a point source beacon at the target to measure and correct for wavefront aberrations introduced by atmospheric turbulence. However, turbulence prevents the formation of such a point beacon. The extended beacons that are created instead have finite spatial extents and exhibit varying degrees of spatial coherence. Modeling these extended beacons using a Gaussian Schell-model (GSM) form for the autocorrelation function would be a convenient approach due to the analytical tractability of Gaussian functions. We examine the validity of using such a model by evaluating the field scattered from a rough impedance …

Development And Characterization Of A Chromotomosynthetic Hyperspectral Imaging System, Randall L. Bostick

Theses and Dissertations

A chromotomosynthetic imaging (CTI) methodology based upon mathematical reconstruction of a set of 2-D spectral projections to collect high-speed (100 Hz) 3-D hyperspectral data cube has been proposed. The CTI system can simultaneously provide usable 3-D spatial and spectral information, provide high-frame rate slitless 1-D spectra, and generate 2-D imagery equivalent to that collected with no prism in the optical system. The wavelength region where prism dispersion is highest (500 nm) is most sensitive to loss of spectral resolution in the presence of systematic error, while wavelengths 600 nm suffer mostly from a shift of the spectral peaks. The quality …
