Formation Flight Of Earth Satellites On Low-Eccentricity Kam Tori, Christopher T. Craft
Formation Flight Of Earth Satellites On Low-Eccentricity Kam Tori, Christopher T. Craft
Theses and Dissertations
The problem of Earth satellite constellation and formation flight is investigated in the context of Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) theory. KAM tori are constructed utilizing Wiesel’s Low-Eccentricity Earth Satellite Theory, allowing numerical representation of the perturbed tori describing Earth orbits acted upon by geopotential perturbations as sets of Fourier series. A maneuvering strategy using the local linearization of the KAM tangent space is developed and applied, demonstrating the ability to maneuver onto and within desired torus surfaces. Constellation and formation design and maintenance on KAM tori are discussed, along with stability and maneuver error concerns. It is shown that placement of satellites …
A Simulation-Based Analysis Of Chemical And Radiological Hazard Zones Adapted To Physical Boundaries, Mickie J. Sundheim
A Simulation-Based Analysis Of Chemical And Radiological Hazard Zones Adapted To Physical Boundaries, Mickie J. Sundheim
Theses and Dissertations
In the United States, industrial and terrorist use of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) materials pose a risk to public safety. During the initial phase of typical CBRN incidents, emergency responders establish hazard zones based on standard distances from published guidelines and recommendations. This research investigates how standard hazard zones change in a real world environment that accounts for physical boundaries. Using a python simulation in ArcGIS®, new hazard zones were created by expanding standard hazard zones to follow nearby roads, railroads, and rivers. The new and standard zones were compared by calculating the population and area affected by …
Multi-Cubesat Deployment Strategies: How Different Satellite Deployment Schemes Affect Satellite Separation And Detection For Various Types Of Constellations And Missions, Scott A. Biehl Jr.
Multi-Cubesat Deployment Strategies: How Different Satellite Deployment Schemes Affect Satellite Separation And Detection For Various Types Of Constellations And Missions, Scott A. Biehl Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
As economics drive an increased demand for small satellites and, consequently, an increase in the number of satellites deployed per launch, different deployment schemes and their effects on satellite dynamics must be well understood. While there are advantages to deploying multiple satellites at once, users may have trouble with tracking, identifying, and communicating with their satellites. This investigation examines the deployment of eight 3U CubeSats, and the resulting relative motion within a constellation. Both the distance between any two satellites within a constellation and the volume of a polygon encompassing a constellation are used to analyze the satellite dynamics within …
Key Detection Rate Modeling And Analysis For Satellite-Based Quantum Key Distribution, Jonathan C. Denton
Key Detection Rate Modeling And Analysis For Satellite-Based Quantum Key Distribution, Jonathan C. Denton
Theses and Dissertations
A satellite QKD model was developed and validated, that allows a user to determine the optimum wavelength for use in a satellite-based QKD link considering the location of ground sites, selected orbit and hardware performance. This thesis explains how the model was developed, validated and presents results from a simulated year-long study of satellite-based quantum key distribution. It was found that diffractive losses and atmospheric losses define a fundamental trade space that drives both orbit and wavelength selection. The optimal orbit is one which generates the highest detection rates while providing equal pass elevation angles and durations to multiple ground …
Localized Plasma Measurement During Instability Modes In A Hall Thruster, David A. Cunningham
Localized Plasma Measurement During Instability Modes In A Hall Thruster, David A. Cunningham
Theses and Dissertations
Hall thrusters are a key technology for current and future unmanned satellites, striking a balance between thrust and fuel economy suitable for many mission profiles of interest. Despite their extensive flight heritage and a large body of research, many phenomena occurring in the plasma discharge of Hall thrusters are not well understood. A combination of intrusive and non-intrusive measurement techniques were used to investigate the properties of the exhaust plume of two Hall thrusters and correlate optical characteristics of oscillating modes with the plasma potential and azimuthal current distribution during those modes. A strong trend was found associating the optical …
Orbital Resonances In The Vinti Solution, Laura M. Duffy
Orbital Resonances In The Vinti Solution, Laura M. Duffy
Theses and Dissertations
The Vinti Solution offers a more accurate model than the two-body problem as an orbital propagator. Unfortunately, the Vinti solution contains small divisors near orbital resonances in the perturbative terms of the Hamiltonian, which lead to inaccurate orbital predictions. One approach to avoid the small divisors is to apply transformation theory. The methodology of this research is to identify the perturbative terms of the Vinti Solution, perform a coordinate transformation, and derive the new equations of motion for the Vinti system near orbital resonances. The analysis in this research focuses on the 2:1 resonance, which includes the Global Positioning System. …
Analysis Of A Modified Equivalent Circuit Model For Lithium-Ion Battery Modules In Cubesats, James J. Liu
Analysis Of A Modified Equivalent Circuit Model For Lithium-Ion Battery Modules In Cubesats, James J. Liu
Theses and Dissertations
Failure of the electrical power system (EPS) to meet mission requirements is a common problem in nano-size satellites commonly referred to as CubeSats. The motivation for this research stems from the desire to prevent EPS failure through a process of testing and space qualification of components. Utilizing models to predict the behavior of an EPS before it is designed, built, and tested for space can provide critical insight in areas of limitation in performance and survivability. Modeling an entire EPS system is challenging because it requires extensive knowledge of all components and their behavior. This research focuses specifically on the …

Analysis of the thruster performance included calculations of impulse bit, specific impulse, thrust coefficient, …
Radial Basis Function Based Quadrature Over Smooth Surfaces, Maloupu L. Watts
Radial Basis Function Based Quadrature Over Smooth Surfaces, Maloupu L. Watts
Theses and Dissertations
The numerical approximation of denite integrals, or quadrature, often involves the construction of an interpolant of the integrand and subsequent integration of the interpolant. It is natural to rely on polynomial interpolants in the case ofone dimension; however, extension of integration of polynomial interpolants to two or more dimensions can be costly andunstable. A method for computing surface integrals on the sphere is detailed in the literature (Reeger and Fornberg,Studies in Applied Mathematics, 2016). The method uses local radial basis function (RBF) interpolation to reducecomputational complexity when generating quadrature weights for the particular node set. This thesis expands upon thesame …

Position And Volume Estimation Of Atmospheric Nuclear Detonations From Video Reconstruction, Daniel T. Schmitt
Theses and Dissertations
Recent work in digitizing films of foundational atmospheric nuclear detonations from the 1950s provides an opportunity to perform deeper analysis on these historical tests. This work leverages multi-view geometry and computer vision techniques to provide an automated means to perform three-dimensional analysis of the blasts for several points in time. The accomplishment of this requires careful alignment of the films in time, detection of features in the images, matching of features, and multi-view reconstruction. Sub-explosion features can be detected with a 67% hit rate and 22% false alarm rate. Hotspot features can be detected with a 71.95% hit rate, 86.03% …
Clustering Theory And Data Driven Health Care Strategies, Takayuki Iguchi
Clustering Theory And Data Driven Health Care Strategies, Takayuki Iguchi
Theses and Dissertations
DoD health care requires reform with growing costs causing concerns of decreased military capability. One proposed radical strategy to fix current health care delivery systems is to organize medical teams around patients with similar treatment requirements. This is a clustering problem; how do you partition the set of patients so that each group has similar treatment needs? We provide advances in clustering theory relevant to this new health care strategy. In particular, we create fast certifiably optimal k-means clustering using what is known as Probably Certifiably Correct (PCC) algorithms which achieves state-of-the-art performance under certain models. Inspired by the health …
Geosynchronous Binary Object Detection, Patrick B. Cunningham
Geosynchronous Binary Object Detection, Patrick B. Cunningham
Theses and Dissertations
This paper will compare competing methods for optically detecting binary objects. This is mostly intended for use in Space Situational Awareness (SSA), though has the potential to be used in other applications. The first method referred to as, “Single Object Detection” is a versatile algorithm which is currently used to detect extraterrestrial objects. However, it does not take into account interference by a nearby object. Therefore a second algorithm is investigated, referred to as “Binary Object Detection”, which does. The binary detection algorithm proved to have a comparable or superior Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve (based upon the area under …
Toward Automated Aerial Refueling: Relative Navigation With Structure From Motion, Kevin W. Colson
Toward Automated Aerial Refueling: Relative Navigation With Structure From Motion, Kevin W. Colson
Theses and Dissertations
The USAF's use of UAS has expanded from reconnaissance to hunter/killer missions. As the UAS mission further expands into aerial combat, better performance and larger payloads will have a negative correlation with range and loiter times. Additionally, the Air Force Future Operating Concept calls for \formations of uninhabited refueling aircraft...[that] enable refueling operations partway inside threat areas." However, a lack of accurate relative positioning information prevents the ability to safely maintain close formation flight and contact between a tanker and a UAS. The inclusion of cutting edge vision systems on present refueling platforms may provide the information necessary to support …
Towards Automated Aerial Refueling: Real Time Position Estimation With Stereo Vision, Bradley D. Denby
Towards Automated Aerial Refueling: Real Time Position Estimation With Stereo Vision, Bradley D. Denby
Theses and Dissertations
Aerial refueling is essential to the United States Air Force (USAF) core mission of rapid global mobility. However, in-flight refueling is not available to remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) or unmanned aerial systems (UAS). As reliance on drones for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) and other USAF core missions grows, the ability to automate aerial refueling for such systems becomes increasingly critical. New refueling platforms include sensors that could be used to estimate the relative position of an approaching aircraft. Relative position estimation is a key component to solving the automated aerial refueling (AAR) problem. Analysis of data from a one-seventh …

A Misuse-Based Intrusion Detection System For Itu-T G.9959 Wireless Networks, Jonathan D. Fuller
Theses and Dissertations
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) provide low-cost, low-power, and low-complexity systems tightly integrating control and communication. Protocols based on the ITU-T G.9959 recommendation specifying narrow-band sub-GHz communications have significant growth potential. The Z-Wave protocol is the most common implementation. Z-Wave developers are required to sign nondisclosure and confidentiality agreements, limiting the availability of tools to perform open source research. This work discovers vulnerabilities allowing the injection of rogue devices or hiding information in Z-Wave packets as a type of covert channel attack. Given existing vulnerabilities and exploitations, defensive countermeasures are needed. A Misuse-Based Intrusion Detection System (MBIDS) is engineered, capable of …
Satellite Ephemeris Correction Via Remote Site Observation For Star Tracker Navigation Performance Improvement, Jorge E. Diaz
Satellite Ephemeris Correction Via Remote Site Observation For Star Tracker Navigation Performance Improvement, Jorge E. Diaz
Theses and Dissertations
In order for celestial navigation observing satellites to provide accurate positioning estimates, precise ephemerides of the observed satellites are necessary. This work analyzed a method to correct for satellite ephemeris to be used in celestial navigation applications. This correction is the measured angle differences between the expected location of the satellite, which is given by propagating publicly available Two-Line Elements (TLE), and their observed angles from a precisely known reference site. Therefore, the angle difference can be attributed completely to satellite ephemeris error assuming instrument error was accounted for. The intent is to calculate this correction from the reference site …

Characterization Of Quad-Copter Positioning Systems And The Effect Of Pose Uncertainties On Field Probe Measurements, James C. Dossett
Characterization Of Quad-Copter Positioning Systems And The Effect Of Pose Uncertainties On Field Probe Measurements, James C. Dossett
Theses and Dissertations
When measuring the Radar Cross Section (RCS) of a test object, many uncertainties must be accounted for, such as the non-homogeneous nature of the medium between the radar test equipment and the platform under test. There are a variety of other error sources, including clutter and Radio Frequency Interference (RFI), motivating the development of techniques to measure and model the uncertainties in RCS measurements. The following research, in unison with prior and current efforts, intends to reduce the impact of these uncertainties by utilizing a unique two-way field probe in the form of a geodesic sphere encompassing a commercial quad-copter …
Cross-Subject Continuous Analytic Workload Profiling Using Stochastic Discrete Event Simulation, Joseph J. Giametta
Cross-Subject Continuous Analytic Workload Profiling Using Stochastic Discrete Event Simulation, Joseph J. Giametta
Theses and Dissertations
Operator functional state (OFS) in remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) simulations is modeled using electroencephalograph (EEG) physiological data and continuous analytic workload profiles (CAWPs). A framework is proposed that provides solutions to the limitations that stem from lengthy training data collection and labeling techniques associated with generating CAWPs for multiple operators/trials. The framework focuses on the creation of scalable machine learning models using two generalization methods: 1) the stochastic generation of CAWPs and 2) the use of cross-subject physiological training data to calibrate machine learning models. Cross-subject workload models are used to infer OFS on new subjects, reducing the need to …

This research seeks to satisfy the need for the rapid evaluation of enterprise network hosts in order to identify items of significance through the introduction of a statistic whitelist based on the behavior of the processes on each host. By taking advantage of the repetition of processes and the resources they access, a whitelist can be generated using large quantities of host machines. For each process, the Modules and the TCP & UDP Connections are compared to identify which resources are most commonly accessed by each process. Results show 47% of processes receiving a whitelist score of 75% or greater …
Poco-Moea: Using Evolutionary Algorithms To Solve The Controller Placement Problem, Scott I. Harned
Poco-Moea: Using Evolutionary Algorithms To Solve The Controller Placement Problem, Scott I. Harned
Theses and Dissertations
One of the central tenets of a Software Defined Network (SDN) is the use of controllers, which are responsible for managing how traffic flows through switches, routers, and other data-passing devices on a computer network. Most modern SDNs use multiple controllers to divide responsibility for network switches while keeping communication latency low. A problem that has emerged since approximately 2011 is the decision of where to place these controllers to create the most 'optimum' network. This is known as the Controller Placement Problem (CPP). Such a decision is subject to multiple and sometimes con_icting goals, making the CPP a type …
Tunable Terahertz Metamaterials With Germanium Telluride Components, Christopher H. Kodama
Tunable Terahertz Metamaterials With Germanium Telluride Components, Christopher H. Kodama
Theses and Dissertations
Terahertz (THz) technology is an emerging field with many exciting applications. THz waves can be used to locate explosives and illicit drugs in security applications, or DNA and other molecule resonances in medical applications. THz frequencies represent the next level of modern, high-speed computing, but they also can be used for covert battlefield communications links. Metamaterials are an integral part of THz technology because they can be used to create exotic material properties—permittivities and permeabilities—in a part of the frequency spectrum that is otherwise rather empty and passive. This work aims to acquire a fuller understanding of THz metamaterials in …

Examiners in the field of digital forensics regularly encounter enormous amounts of data and must identify the few artifacts of evidentiary value. The most pressing challenge these examiners face is manual reconstruction of complex datasets with both hierarchical and associative relationships. The complexity of this data requires significant knowledge, training, and experience to correctly and efficiently examine. Current methods provide primarily text-based representations or low-level visualizations, but levee the task of maintaining global context of system state on the examiner. This research presents a visualization tool that improves analysis methods through simultaneous representation of the hierarchical and associative relationships and …
Utilization Of A Geodesic Sphere And Quadcopter As Two-Way Field Probe For Electro-Magnetic Field Measurements In An Indoor Radar Cross Section Range, Nathan Lett
Theses and Dissertations
Radar Cross Section (RCS) measurements rely heavily on multiple assumptions. Uncertainty in the final measurement is determined based on these assumptions. One source in particular is the non-homogeneous nature of the transmission path between radar test equipment and a target under test. The following research extends prior research. This thesis intends to provide a unique two-way field probe solution for measuring Electro-magnetic (EM) fluctuations in a test volume. In this thesis, the design, development, and demonstration of a geodesic sphere encased quadcopter two-way probe is explained. The Parrot® Bebop Drone quadcopter was used with a 2v frequency divided geodesic sphere …
Non-Linear Optimization Applied To Angle-Of-Arrival Satellite Based Geo-Localization For Biased And Time Drifting Sensors, Daniel E. Levy
Non-Linear Optimization Applied To Angle-Of-Arrival Satellite Based Geo-Localization For Biased And Time Drifting Sensors, Daniel E. Levy
Theses and Dissertations
Multiple sensors are used in a variety of geolocation systems. Many use Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) or Received Signal Strength (RSS) measurements to locate the most likely location of a signal. When an object does not emit a classical RF signal, Angle of Arrival (AOA) measurements become more feasible than TDOA or RSS measurements. AOA measurements can be created from any sensor platform with any sort of camera. When location and attitude knowledge of the sensor passive objects can be tracked. A Non-Linear Optimization (NLO) method for calculating the most likely estimate from AOA measurements has been created in …
Interference Suppression Using Knowledge-Aided Subarray Pattern Synthesis, David A. New
Interference Suppression Using Knowledge-Aided Subarray Pattern Synthesis, David A. New
Theses and Dissertations
Most phased array systems subarray many antenna elements into far fewer digitized channels. While having more degrees of freedom (DOF) yields better performance, adding channels to create more digital DOF increases system cost and data throughput requirements. A subarray itself constitutes a phased array with as many DOF as it has antenna element weights. Typically, only one degree of freedom is used to steer the maximum gain direction of the subarray pattern. For typical antenna geometries a single subarray will provide many more spatial DOF than there are digitized channels. The inherent DOF of the subarrays could be used to …

Implementation And Performance Of Factorized Backprojection On Low-Cost Commercial-Off-The-Shelf Hardware, Alec C. Rasmussen
Theses and Dissertations
Traditional Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems are large, complex, and expensive platforms that require significant resources to operate. The size and cost of the platforms limits the potential uses of SAR to strategic level intelligence gathering or large budget research efforts. The purpose of this thesis is to implement the factorized backprojection SAR image processing algorithm in the C++ programming language and test the code's performance on a low cost, low size, weight, and power (SWAP) computer: a Raspberry Pi Model B. For a comparison of performance, a baseline implementation of filtered backprojection is adapted to C++ from pre-existing MATLAB® …
Visual-Ins Using A Human Operator And Converted Measurements, Turner J. Montgomery
Visual-Ins Using A Human Operator And Converted Measurements, Turner J. Montgomery
Theses and Dissertations
A method human operated INS aiding is explored in which the pilot identifies and tracks a ground feature of unknown position over a short measurement epoch using an E/O sensor. One then refers to Visual-INS. In contrast to current research trends, a human operator is entrusted with visually tracking the ground feature. In addition, a less conventional measurement linearization technique is applied to generate “converted” measurements. A linear regression algorithm is then applied to the converted measurements providing an estimate of the INS horizontal velocity error and accelerometer biases. At the completion of the measurement epoch, the INS is corrected …
