Exploring The Use Of Experiential Learning Strategies To Develop Science Process Skills In Primary Schools In Arua City – West Nile, Uganda., Wilfred Joe Ken Okwaimung
Master of Education
Teachers in Uganda still make use of the traditional teacher-centred pedagogies that do not factor in the learners’ past experiences, interactions, and engagement in the learning process. This reduces the learners’ abilities to acquire some Science Process Skills which are vital for further acquisition of scientific knowledge and skills for future learning and practice of science. Science teaching and learning require practical pedagogies that make the learning meaningful. Using lesson observation, interviews, focus group discussion, and document analysis, this Action Research, sought to find out whether the current pedagogies that teachers used, integrated Experiential Learning Strategies as an intervention to …

Manual Qualitative Data Coding Using Ms Word For Students And Early Career Researchers In Resource-Constrained Settings, Kahabi Isangula, Susan Kelly, Joyce Wamoyi
School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
In recent years, the field of qualitative data collection, management, and analysis has undergone significant evolution, with researchers worldwide increasingly leveraging technological advancements to streamline and simplify their practices. Despite the advantages of using qualitative data coding software, several challenges persist, particularly in resource-constrained settings. Issues such as the high cost of software licenses, the time required to learn and use these tools, and the complexity of advanced features often hinder researchers, especially students and early career researchers in low-income contexts, and contribute to the generation of poor-quality research evidence. This paper aims to provide a simplified, step-by-step guide to …

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
Background:
Attitude-associated stigmas towards patients with mental illness affect most patients. However, the factors related to attitude-associated stigma among caregivers remain unknown. This might lead to the disruption of family relationships, low self-esteem, lack of socialization and other adverse effects. Therefore, the current study aimed to determine the associated stigma among caregivers of a patient with a mental illness
Methods:
A quantitative approach, with a cross-sectional study design, was used, involving two standardized questionnaires: Community Attitudes Towards the Mentally Ill (CAMI) Scale and Modified Consumer Experiences of Stigma Questionnaire (MCESQ), which were used to measure attitudes associated with …

Exploring Midwives' Challenges And Strategies To Provide Care In Maternity Settings During Harsh Winter Weather In Northern Areas, Pakistan: A Qualitative Study Protocol, Sana Sultan, Rafat Jan, Marina Baig
Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)
Background: Midwives play a vital role in enhancing the quality of care and achieving substantial reductions in maternal and newborn mortality rates. However, in the context of Gilgit Baltistan, the harsh winter weather, and frequent heavy snowfall present distinct challenges for midwives providing essential maternal care. These challenges can lead to an increased risk of maternal infections and newborn hypothermia. Consequently, the limited accessibility to healthcare facilities due to frequent harsh winter weather, and resulting scarcity of resources like heating, electricity, and water further exacerbates the situation.
Objective: The objective of the study is to explore the challenges and barriers …

Internal Medicine, East Africa
Introduction: Despite the implementation of complex interventions, ICU mortality remains high and more so in developing countries. The demand for critical care in Sub-Saharan Africa is more than ever before as the region experiences a double burden of rising rates of non-communicable diseases (NCD) in the background battle of combating infectious diseases. Limited studies in Tanzania have reported varying factors associated with markedly high rates of ICU mortality. Investigating the burden of ICU care remains crucial in providing insights into the effectiveness and challenges of critical care delivery.

Chea, Vincent A. Kagonya, Eunice A. Oyugi, Carophine Nasambu, Isaac Menza, Fauz Ibrahim, Osman Abdullahi, Alice Anika, Amin S. Hassan, Amina Abubakar
Institute for Human Development, East Africa
Background It is known from previous studies that university students in sub-Saharan Africa (sSA) engage in sexual risk-taking behaviour (SRTB). However, there is paucity of data on factors contributing to SRTB among university students (emerging adults) at the Kenyan Coast thus hindering intervention planning. This study seeks to provide an in-depth qualitative understanding of the factors contributing to SRTB and their interconnectedness among university students at the Kenyan Coast combining qualitative research with a systems thinking approach.
Methods Using the ecological model, and employing in-depth interviews, we explored the perceptions of twenty-six key informants (twenty-one emerging adults and five other …

Investment In Teacher-Education Versus Teacher-Educational Research For Effective Teacher-Professional Learning, Nipael Mrutu, Esther Kibga, Aladini Hoka, Peter Kajoro, Fredrick Mtenzi, Hamis Nkota, Tage Biswalo
Institute for Educational Development, East Africa
Purpose: This systematic research paper provides a comprehensive review of studies and literature on three terms i.e., teacher education, teacher professional learning and teacher education research more specifically in the context of the Tanzania education system. One of the most important aspects identified in teacher education in recent years is teacher educational research despite being yet overlooked. Teacher educational research creates a better juncture through which a gap between teacher education and teacher professional learning is bridged and the two present well with one another.
Methodology: The analysis used 45 articles related to the three aspects, published in ten …

Dorsal Pancreas Agenesis, An Incidental Finding During Acute Appendicitis Diagnosis; A Case Report, Willbroad Kyejo, Ally Zain Ismail, Sajida Panjwani, Nancy Matillya, Ahmed Jusabani, Adil Datoo, Pilly Ally
Family Medicine, East Africa
Introduction and importance: Dorsal pancreas agenesis is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by the absence or severe underdevelopment of the dorsal pancreatic bud. We report a case of a man who presented with features of appendicitis only to the incidentally discovery of dorsal pancreas agenesis during the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. We describe our experience on radiological diagnostic formulation and work up.
Case presentation: We present the case of a 45-year-old male patient who presented to the emergency department with symptoms and signs suggestive of acute appendicitis. A computed tomography scan and laboratory investigations confirmed the diagnosis of appendicitis. Incidentally, …
