Ontology Generation, Information Harvesting And Semantic Annotation For Machine-Generated Web Pages, Cui Tao Dec 2008

Ontology Generation, Information Harvesting And Semantic Annotation For Machine-Generated Web Pages, Cui Tao

Theses and Dissertations

The current World Wide Web is a web of pages. Users have to guess possible keywords that might lead through search engines to the pages that contain information of interest and browse hundreds or even thousands of the returned pages in order to obtain what they want. This frustrating problem motivates an approach to turn the web of pages into a web of knowledge, so that web users can query the information of interest directly. This dissertation provides a step in this direction and a way to partially overcome the challenges. Specifically, this dissertation shows how to turn machine-generated web …

Construction Of Biologically Productive Artificial Tidal Flats With Solidified Sea Bottom Sediments, Daizo Imai, Satoshi Kaneco, Ahmed H.A. Dabwan, Hideyuki Katsumata, Tohru Suzuki, Tadaya Kato, Kiyohisa Ohta

International Journal of Soil, Sediment and Water

Ago Bay is a typical enclosed coastal sea that is connected to the Pacific Ocean via a very narrow and shallow entrance. The bay has been organically contaminated by the practice of culturing pearls, which has been ongoing for the past 110 years. To address this problem, a new technology — the Hi-Biah-System (HBS) —, which dewaters muddy dredged sediments and changes the muddy sediments for raw materials of tidal flat, was introduced in 2005. The solidified product from the sediments with the HBS was used to construct the tidal flat. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the …

Mercury And Cyanide Used As Indicators Of Sediment Transport In Ephemeral Washes At The Techatticup Mine And Mill Site, Nelson, Nevada (Usa), Douglas Brian Sims, Anthony Francis Dec 2008

Mercury And Cyanide Used As Indicators Of Sediment Transport In Ephemeral Washes At The Techatticup Mine And Mill Site, Nelson, Nevada (Usa), Douglas Brian Sims, Anthony Francis

International Journal of Soil, Sediment and Water

Mercury (Hg) and cyanide (CN-) are used as indicators of aquatic transport down gradient in ephemeral washes. The pattern of transport for Hg and CN- should mimic other metals (As, Cu, Cr, Pb, Ni, Ba) found in the soils. Hg and CN- were chosen to illustrate transport in surface soils because Hg and CN- are utilized in the milling process and Hg is available from the local geology. Stamp mills that utilize Hg and CN- flotation concentrate naturally occurring metals as byproducts. Soil samples collected from a wash system bisecting the mine waste site contained metal concentrations significantly above background …

Experimental And Biogeochemcial Modeling Studies On Arsenic Release In Soil Under Anaerobic Condition, Md. Abdul Halim, Kenji Jinno, Abdur Razzak, Keita Oda, Yoshinari Hiroshiro

International Journal of Soil, Sediment and Water

The identification of release mechanism of arsenic may assist in designing safe and effective remediation strategies, due to its severe toxicity effect for the human body. In this regards, investigations were carried out to observe the release of As from soil into water. It was found that As concentration increased with decreasing oxidation reduction potential. Arsenic concentrations demonstrated negative covariation with the concentrations of NO3&#; but strongly correlated with DOC and Fe concentrations. Batch leaching tests at different pH conditions showed a strong pH dependence on arsenic and iron leaching. A numerical simulation of arsenic transport model, coupled with microbially …

A Modeling And Spatio-Temporal Analysis Framework For Monitoring Environmental Change Using Npp As An Ecosystem Indicator, Robert Crabtree, Christopher Potter, Randall Mullen, Jennifer Sheldon, Shengli Huang, Joshua Harmsen, Ann Rodman, Cathie Jean

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

We present and describe a modeling and analysis framework for monitoring protected area (PA) ecosystems with net primary productivity (NPP) as an indicator of health. It brings together satellite data, an ecosystem simulation model (NASA–CASA), spatial linear models with autoregression, and a GIS to provide practitioners a low-cost, accessible ecosystem monitoring and analysis system (EMAS) at landscape resolutions. The EMAS is evaluated and assessed with an application example in Yellowstone National Park aimed at identifying the causes and consequences of drought. Utilizing five predictor covariates (solar radiation, burn severity, soil productivity, temperature, and precipitation), spatio-temporal analysis revealed how landscape controls …

Design And Demonstration Of A Small-Animal Up-Conversion Imager, Christopher Salthouse, Scott Hildebrand, Ralph Weissleder, Umar Mahmood

Christopher Salthouse

This first small-animal up-conversion imager (SAUCI) was developed and used for in-vivo imaging of up-converting nanoparticles (UCNs.) Unlike traditional fluorophores, UCNs absorb multiple lower-energy photons and emit a single higher-energy photon. This unique physical process makes it possible to image deeper into tissue with lower background signals. In vivo imaging of particle accumulation in the liver was demonstrated following intravenous injection of particles.

Male Circumcision As An Hiv Prevention Strategy In Sub-Saharan Africa: Socio-Legal Barriers, Lawrence O. Gostin Dec 2008

Male Circumcision As An Hiv Prevention Strategy In Sub-Saharan Africa: Socio-Legal Barriers, Lawrence O. Gostin

O'Neill Institute Papers

UNAIDS and WHO recommend safe, voluntary male circumcision as an additional, important strategy for the prevention of heterosexually-acquired HIV in men in areas with high HIV prevalence and low levels of male circumcision. Comprehensive male circumcision services should include HIV testing and counseling, partner reduction, and male and female condom use. Yet, male circumcision can have deep symbolic meaning that could pose barriers to implementation. In some parts of the world, it is a traditional practice with religious or cultural significance, in others it is a common hygiene intervention, and in yet others it is unfamiliar or foreign. Consequently, the …

Sub-Circuit Selection And Replacement Algorithms Modeled As Term Rewriting Systems, Eric D. Simonaire Dec 2008

Sub-Circuit Selection And Replacement Algorithms Modeled As Term Rewriting Systems, Eric D. Simonaire

Theses and Dissertations

Intent protection is a model of software obfuscation which, among other criteria, prevents an adversary from understanding the program’s function for use with contextual information. Relating this framework for obfuscation to malware detection, if a malware detector can perfectly normalize a program P and any obfuscation (variant) of the program O(P), the program is not intent protected. The problem of intent protection on programs can also be modeled as intent protection on combinational logic circuits. If a malware detector can perfectly normalize a circuit C and any obfuscation (variant) O(C) of the circuit, the circuit is not intent protected. In …

Regular Second Order Perturbations Of Binary Black Holes: The Extreme Mass Ratio Regime, Carlos O. Lousto, Hiroyuki Nakano Dec 2008

Regular Second Order Perturbations Of Binary Black Holes: The Extreme Mass Ratio Regime, Carlos O. Lousto, Hiroyuki Nakano

Articles

In order to derive the precise gravitational waveforms for extreme mass ratio inspirals (EMRI), we develop a formulation for the second order metric perturbations produced by a point particle moving in the Schwarzschild spacetime. The second order waveforms satisfy a wave equation with an effective source build up from products of the first order perturbations and its derivatives. We have explicitly regularized this source at the horizon and at spatial infinity. We show that the effective source does not contain squares of the Dirac’s delta and that perturbations are regular at the particle location. We introduce an asymptotically flat gauge …

Enhanced fluorescence is observed from dye molecules interacting with optical nanoantenna arrays. Elliptical gold dimers form individual nanoantennae with tunable plasmon resonances depending upon the geometry of the two particles and the size of the gap between them. A fluorescent dye, Rhodamine 800, is uniformly embedded in a dielectric host that coats the nanoantennae. The nanoantennae act to enhance the dye absorption. In turn, emission from the dye drives the plasmon resonance of the antennae; the nanoantennae act to enhance the fluorescence signal and change the angular distribution of emission. These effects depend upon the overlap of the plasmon resonance …

Delay-Induced Destabilization Of Entrainment Of Nerve Impulses On Ephaptically Coupled Nerve Fibers, Evangelos A. Coutsias, Mohit H. Adhikari, John K. Mciver Dec 2008

Delay-Induced Destabilization Of Entrainment Of Nerve Impulses On Ephaptically Coupled Nerve Fibers, Evangelos A. Coutsias, Mohit H. Adhikari, John K. Mciver

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

We study the effect of delay on the synchronization of two nerve impulses traveling along two ephaptically coupled, unmyelinated nerve fibers. The system is modeled as a pair of delay-coupled Fitzhugh-Nagumo equations. A multiple-scale perturbation approach is used for the analysis of these equations in the limit of weak coupling. In the absence of delay, two pulses with identical speeds are shown to be entrained precisely. However, as the delay is increased beyond a critical value, we show that this precise entrainment becomes unstable. We make quantitative estimates for the actual values of delay at which this can occur in …
