Cooperative Learning And Academically Gifted Students, John Joynt Dec 2000

Cooperative Learning And Academically Gifted Students, John Joynt

Graduate Research Papers

This article examines the complexity of cooperative learning as an instructional strategy and discusses its positive effects for all students. The writer then defends cooperative learning as a classroom strategy for the academically gifted, even though gifted education practitioners frequently criticize it. He cites current research that identifies cooperative learning as an appropriate general education classroom strategy for all learners, as well as studies that criticize its effectiveness. After reviewing both positive and negative research related to cooperative learning and academically gifted students, the writer concludes that cooperative learning can be a positive instructional strategy if implemented according to the …

Ramanujan-Like Congreuences Of The Distinct Partition Function, Ian Blumenfeld, Christi Carlstead, Mimi Cukier, Wesley Terway Dec 2000

Ramanujan-Like Congreuences Of The Distinct Partition Function, Ian Blumenfeld, Christi Carlstead, Mimi Cukier, Wesley Terway

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

In his work with the partition function, Ramanujan observed several congruences of the form p(An + B) = 0 (mod m). We adapt this form to several congruences of the distinct partition function, p2(n). We show that one can determine all ordered pairs of integers (A;B) for which p2(An + B)=0 (mod 2) and show families of congruences modulo 4. Finally, we offer a proof of a congruence modulo 5 satisfied by the distinct partition function.

The Translational Regulation Of Lipoprotein Lipase In Diabetic Rats Involves The 3′-Untranslated Region Of The Lipoprotein Lipase Mrna, Gouri Ranganathan, Chunling Li, Philip A. Kern Dec 2000

The Translational Regulation Of Lipoprotein Lipase In Diabetic Rats Involves The 3′-Untranslated Region Of The Lipoprotein Lipase Mrna, Gouri Ranganathan, Chunling Li, Philip A. Kern

Clinical and Translational Science Faculty Publications

Adipose tissue lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity is decreased in patients with poorly controlled diabetes, and this contributes to the dyslipidemia of diabetes. To study the mechanism of this decrease in LPL, we studied adipose tissue LPL expression in male rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. Heparin releasable and extractable LPL activity in the epididymal fat decreased by 75-80% in the diabetic group and treatment of the rats with insulin prior to sacrifice reversed this effect. Northern blot analysis indicated no corresponding change in LPL mRNA levels. However, LPL synthetic rate, measured using [35S]methionine pulse labeling, was decreased by 75% in …

Acetate Oxidation Coupled To Fe(Iii) Reduction In Hyperthermophilic Microorganisms, Jason M. Tor, Kazem Kashefi, Derek Lovley Dec 2000

Acetate Oxidation Coupled To Fe(Iii) Reduction In Hyperthermophilic Microorganisms, Jason M. Tor, Kazem Kashefi, Derek Lovley

Derek Lovley

No hyperthermophilic microorganisms have previously been shown to anaerobically oxidize acetate, the key extracellular intermediate in the anaerobic oxidation of organic matter. Here we report that two hyperthermophiles, Ferroglobus placidus and “Geoglobus ahangari,” grow at 85°C by oxidizing acetate to carbon dioxide, with Fe(III) serving as the electron acceptor. These results demonstrate that acetate could potentially be metabolized within the hot microbial ecosystems in which hyperthermophiles predominate, rather than diffusing to cooler environments prior to degradation as has been previously proposed.

Optimal Solvability For The Dirichlet And Neumann Problem In Dimension Two, Atanas Stefanov, Gregory C. Verchota Dec 2000

Optimal Solvability For The Dirichlet And Neumann Problem In Dimension Two, Atanas Stefanov, Gregory C. Verchota

Mathematics - All Scholarship

We show existence and uniqueness for the solutions of the regularity and the Neumann problems for harmonic functions on Lipschitz domains with data in the Hardy spaces Hp1,(partial D)(Hp (partial D)), p>2/3-E, where D C R2 and E is a (small) number depending on the Lipschitz nature of D. This in turn implies that solutions to the Dirichlet problem with data in the Holder class C1/2+E(partial D) are themselves in C1/2+E(D). Both of these results are sharp. In fact, we prove a more general statement regarding the Hp solvability …

Black Women's Health: A Content Analysis Of The Journal Of The American Medical Association, The American Journal Of Public Health, And The New England Journal Of Medicine (1989-1998), Tonia Marie Burkett

Dissertations and Theses

According to the National Vital Statistics Report (1998), Black women age 45-64 are ten times more likely than white women of the same age to die from diseases of the heart. They are five times more likely to die from diabetes. The goal of this study was to examine how articles published in leading medical journals between 1989 and 1998 accounted for such differences in health outcomes among Black and white women.

The explanatory content of the articles was analyzed and coded according to four types of attributions: genetic/biological, cultural/behavioral, structural/socioeconomic and alternative. Each type of explanation derives from different …

Evaluation Of Striped Bass Stocks In Virginia, Monitoring And Tagging Studies, 1999-2003 Annual Report, 1 September 1999 - 31 October 2000, Philip W. Sadler, Robert E. Harris, John E. Olney, Robert J. Latour

Reports

To document continued compliance with Federal law, the Anadromous Fishes Program of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has monitored the size and age composition, sex ratio and maturity schedules of the spawning striped bass stock in the Rappahannock River since December 1981 utilizing commercial pound nets and, since 1991, variable-mesh experimental gill nets. Spawning stock assessment was expanded to include the James River in 1994 utilizing 11 commercial fyke nets and variable-mesh experimental gill nets. The use of fyke nets was discontinued after 1997. In conjunction with the monitoring studies, tagging programs have been conducted in the James …

Celebrating Medicrity At The Bowls, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Well, you could have bowled me over with a feather, or perhaps a dot com, when I learned today that four bowl games had already been played. Not exactly stellar match- ups, but bowl games nonetheless. And say what you will; a bowl game is still a bowl game.

The Electrostatic Interaction Of Charged, Dust-Particle Pairs In Plasmas, M. E. Markes, P. F. Williams Dec 2000

The Electrostatic Interaction Of Charged, Dust-Particle Pairs In Plasmas, M. E. Markes, P. F. Williams

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

We report the results of a study of the electrostatic interaction between negatively charged particles in a plasma. The goal of the study was to investigate the possibility of an attractive interaction which would make possible the formation of “molecules” of particles. For all approximations relating the positive ion density to the local electrostatic potential that we examined, we find that the interaction is repulsive for all particle separations.

Upper White River Bmp Implementation Project (Nps Final Report), Paul F. Vendrell, K. F. Steele, M. A. Nelson, R. W. Mcnew

Technical Reports

The project objective was to monitor agricultural best management practices implemented to minimize sediment, nutrient, and bacterial impact on water quality of the Upper White River watershed. The project targeted the primary agricultural causes of non-point source nutrient and bacterial pollution in three sub-basins of the White River in the Beaver Lake Watershed. Areas with high animal densities targeted high source areas. High source areas were treated with best management practices (BMP) in an effort to reduce the impact to the White River and Beaver Lake. The predominant BMP implemented was waste management, a component of the farm nutrient management …
