Fundamental Capillary Electrophoresis: An Evaluation Of Electrokinetic Sampling, Cindy Ann Mleziva Blake May 2000

Fundamental Capillary Electrophoresis: An Evaluation Of Electrokinetic Sampling, Cindy Ann Mleziva Blake

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Capillary electrophoresis has become a powerful separation technique in fields of biochemical separations, inorganic ions, and chiral separations. The technique has experienced exponential growth since the historic publication of Zone Electrophoresis in Open-Tubular Glass Capillaries by Lukacs and Jorgenson in 1981. However, the use of capillary electrophoresis as a primary research analysis tool still remains to be seen in many pharmaceutical laboratories. One of the main reasons for this is that it remains difficult to validate CE methods using the criteria of quantitation and accuracy posed by the current government regulating agencies, as developed for high performance liquid chromatography and …

Molecular Taxonomy Of The Lichen Genus Heterodermia, Linda Hirschberger Apr 2000

Molecular Taxonomy Of The Lichen Genus Heterodermia, Linda Hirschberger

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Heterodermia is lichen consisting of a fungus and algae. Morphology and chemistry cannot provide definitive evidence for the identity of Heterodermia because various species have very similar morphologies that cannot always be distinguished. Other species only differ by the presence or absence of secondary chemicals detected. by specific chemical tests, which makes distinguishing between two species difficult. The objective of this project is to use Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphisms (RFLPs) to determine how closely related each Heterodermia species is to one another. RFLPs will also be used to determine how closely related a species is to its equal in another …

Studying The Expression Of A Novel Microsatellite Mrna In Chironomous Riparius, Mina Ranzurmal Jan 2000

Studying The Expression Of A Novel Microsatellite Mrna In Chironomous Riparius, Mina Ranzurmal

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The expression of a unique mRNA containing a microsatellite sequence was studied in C. riparius using differential display. First, the rnicrosatellite fragment was sequenced using Sanger's Sequencing method. The microsatellite cDNA contained 11 "ACA" repeats, 12 "AC" repeats, and 5 "CTC" repeats. Second, the affects of cadmium and heat shock on rnicrosatellite mRNA expression were studied. In cadmium experiments, larvae were exposed to low cadmium concentrations (0, 0.04, 0.4, and 4.0 mM) for 24 and 48 h and high cadmium concentrations (0, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, 8.0, and 16.0 mM) for 48 h. The effects of cadmium on fed larvae at …
