The unique optical properties of silica microspheres and lanthanoid elements present the opportunity to adapt silica microspheres containing rare earth elements for novel optical applications. The research demonstrates the first example of incorporating insoluble lanthanoid coordination compounds into silica microspheres. The work explored the controlled synthesis of silica microspheres and the reaction conditions under which lanthanoid complexes can be incorporated into the microspheres. The environment of the coordinated lanthanoid ions before and after incorporation into silica microspheres was probed using spectroflurophotometry. The surface morphology of silica microspheres was characterized using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The …

This study presents the results from a survey issued to speech-language pathologists in the state of Kentucky regarding their perspectives on referral and assessment of bilingual speakers whose primary language is not English. The study was conducted to determine methods for decreasing the over-identification of bilingual students served for speech and language disorders. Literature review indicates an over-identification of non-English speakers in special education and related services programs nationwide. There are many possible reasons for this over-identification some of which include: lack of English instruction prior to testing in English, Speech-Language Pathologists’ preparation level, and shortage of appropriately normed assessment …

The study involved a single subject, a non-verbal child on the autism spectrum, in a clinical setting over a 10 week period. The subject was on a three point sensory diet that was administered before therapy sessions. The tactile, vestibular and proprioceptive systems were targeted with deep pressure touch, a suspension swing, and joint compression. The primary focus was on participation in therapy and language development with specific attention given to the increase of vocalizations and/or verbalizations. Beyond actual institutional influences, entrepreneurs’ perceptions of institutions and their potential inconsistencies in interpreting institutional change may influence entrepreneurial intent to quit a business. Especially at the microentrepreneurial level, inconsistencies in perceptions of institutional change may variously affect individuals’ intent to abandon their business, seek jobs in other sectors, or even continue in business despite regulatory institutional changes making their business legally untenable. Our goal in this research is to empirically measure these intents in the face of inconsistent perceptions of institutional change with a sample of 660 street vendors from different cities in Vietnam. Phosphorylase kinase (PhK), a key regulator of glycogenolysis, is critical for maintaining blood glucose levels thus providing energy to sustain muscle contraction. A deficiency of PhK in skeletal muscle is the cause of one type of glycogen storage disease (GSD) in humans. This study investigates the physiological and genetic adaptations that occur in a mouse model of GSD, I/LnJ mice, in response to voluntary exercise. Juvenile (6-8 weeks old) and adult (12-14 weeks old) I/LnJ and wild-type C57/Bl6 mice exercised voluntarily for 1, 2 or 5 weeks.
