Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

An alarming number of abandoned properties in the United States stifle community productivity and pose serious health risks. Changes in environmental liability laws may effectively remediate these sites, but brownfield rehabilitation requires careful cost benefit analysis on a per-site basis.

A Comparison Of The Effects Of A Modified School Calendar Versus A Traditional School Calendar On Student Achievement, Gordon Powers

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Many attempts at education reform have been implemented. Of all the numerous and well intended reform efforts, the most controversial may be the discussion and debate concerning the school calendar. Year-round Education (YRE), which uses a balanced or modified school calendar versus the traditional school calendar, has become an issue being fiercely debated in all 50 states. An alternative to the traditional calendar, YRE has become a more accepted solution to some of the problems recognized in the educational system. This research study was designed to investigate the impact of YRE on student achievement in a modified school and traditional …

The National Weather Service's Polygon Method: Warning Dissemination Of The Future, Crystal L. Bergman Oct 2005

The National Weather Service's Polygon Method: Warning Dissemination Of The Future, Crystal L. Bergman

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The National Weather Service (NWS) is continuously improving its forecasting skills, but forecasters still cannot accurately predict the path of a tornado or a severe thunderstorm. The NWS has developed a new warning system in which the warned area is outlined by a polygon, not a county boundary. The polygon-waming approach is expected to significantly reduce the total square-mile area of warnings not followed by an event, called the False Alarm Area. There are three central issues concerning the failure of the polygon-warning method: I) the size of the counties impacted by a storm, 2) the impact of the new …

Spatial And Temporal Variations In Epikarst Storage And Flow In South Central Kentucky’S Pennyroyal Plateau Sinkhole Plain, Chris Groves, Carl Bolster, Joe Meiman Sep 2005

Spatial And Temporal Variations In Epikarst Storage And Flow In South Central Kentucky’S Pennyroyal Plateau Sinkhole Plain, Chris Groves, Carl Bolster, Joe Meiman

Earth, Environmental, and Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

The well-developed karst aquifers of south central Kentucky’s Pennyroyal Plateau are impacted by contamination from animal waste and other agricultural inputs. Understanding fate and transport of these and other contaminants first requires knowledge of flow and storage behaviors within the impacted aquifers, complicated by significant heterogeneity, anisotropy, and rapid temporal variations. Here we report on spatial and temporal variations in vadose zone flow and water chemistry (or quality) within Cave Spring Caverns, Kentucky beneath agricultural lands on a well-developed sinkhole plain. Weekly sampling of three underground waterfalls show statistically significant differences in water quality, though the sites are laterally within …
