Hayek's Four Tendencies Toward Equilibrium, Mario J. Rizzo
Hayek's Four Tendencies Toward Equilibrium, Mario J. Rizzo
Mario Rizzo
F.A. Hayek uses the concepts of "equilibrium" and the "tendency toward equilibrium" in a number of senses that are subtly, but importantly, different from each other. This article elucidates those differences and puts them in the context of his theoretical work. As far as I know, this is still the only article that undertakes this analysis.
Cartel Enforcement With Uncertainty About Costs, Peter Cramton, Thomas R. Palfrey
Cartel Enforcement With Uncertainty About Costs, Peter Cramton, Thomas R. Palfrey
Peter Cramton
What cartel agreements are possible when firms have private information about production costs? For private cost uncertainty we characterize the set of cartel agreements that can be supported, recognizing incentive and participation constraints. If defection results in either Cournot or Bertrand competition, the incentive problem in large cartels is severe enough to prevent the cartel from achieving the monopoly outcome. However, if the cartel agreement requires less than unanimous ratification by the member firms, then the incentive problem can be overcome in large cartels. With common cost uncertainty, perfect collusion is possible in large cartels, regardless of the ratification rule.

Cirrhosis In The Trauma Victim --- Effect On Mortality-Rates, Glen Tinkoff, Michael Rhodes, Daniel Diamond, Joseph F. Lucke
Joseph Lucke
To evaluate the impact cirrhosis has on survival the records of 40 cirrhotic trauma victims from the registries of two Level 1 trauma centers were reviewed and probability of survival calculated using the TRISS methodology. Mechanism of injury, anatomic location, involvement of single or multiple sites, presence of ascites, elevations in serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), alkaline phosphatase, serum bilirubin, prothrombin time (PT), and hypoalbuminemia were tabulated for each patient. Contingency tables were created for injury and hepatic parameters, as related to survival, and subjected to chi square analysis. Loglinear analysis was performed on all significant parameters to evaluate the …

Getting To The Heart Of The Matter: Collected Letters And Papers, Robert K. Thomas
Robert K. Thomas
This collection of some of the writings of Robert (Bob) Thomas, Cherokee elder, practitioner of the Cherokee traditional religion, mentor to a wide variety of younger Indian leaders, and anthropologist at the University of Arizona, were written over the last twenty-five years. They were written for different groups of people - some for Indians and others directed more to non-Indians, some for academics and others for a general audience. They cover a wide range of subjects and use a variety of writing styles. But all display Bob's great concern and passion, that which drives him - the survival of Indians …

Have You Hugged Your Computer Today?, David Morgan Lochhead
Dr. David Morgan Lochhead
"I have owned a computer for over ten years now. When the computer came into my life, it turned it upside down. I was excited. I would spend every moment that I could with my computer. The most exciting thing that could happen to me would be for a new piece of software to come along. I lavished my computer with new programs. "

Strategy And Structure: Reconceiving The Relationship, Herman L. Boschken
Strategy And Structure: Reconceiving The Relationship, Herman L. Boschken
Herman L. Boschken
Discussions have drawn attention to the relationship between strategy and structure for much of the last quarter century. Yet, no firm basis has emerged to settle the issue of causal direction or to affirm the relationship's effects on organizational performance. By adding a new dimension to the strategy-structure model, this article attempts to conceptually link long-term performance with (a) the presence of subunits having distinctive competence in strategic planning and (b) the coordination of these differentiated subunits into a discernible micro-structure embedded within the overall organization. This new dimension is explored and developed by use of a case of the …

Ordering The Urban Environment: City Statutes And City Planning In Medieval Todi, Italy, Samuel D. Gruber Dr.
Samuel D. Gruber Dr.
Discusses the deliberate urban policies that of medieval Todi, Italy that helped create a functioning and beautiful medieval town through explicit laws and the careful micro-planning that utilized an incremental urbanism to create an inter-connected and integrated urban environment. Many of the medieval views visitors assume are part of an "organic" growth are actually careful projections of communal power and order.
Dream Interpreters In Exile: Joseph, Daniel, And Sigmund (Solomon), Ken Frieden
Dream Interpreters In Exile: Joseph, Daniel, And Sigmund (Solomon), Ken Frieden
Ken Frieden
The biblical Joseph and Daniel have much in common with SigmundFreud, for all three experienced the powerlessness of exileand later attained the power they lacked by interpreting dreams. Unableto control historical destiny, exilic Jews have characteristicallyreinterpreted events, texts, and dreams; the interpretive successes ofJoseph, Daniel, and Sigmund at once reflect and defy the Jewish condition.Although Freud made every effort to distance himself from hisancient forerunners, The Interpretation of Dreams indirectly responds tothem. While many adepts at dream interpretation appear in the Bible,in the Talmud, in the Sifer Chassidim, and in other Judaic sources,Joseph, Daniel, and Sigmund have special significance. Joseph is …
Conductivity Of N-Dimensional Composites Containing Hyperspherical Inclusion, Ashok S. Sangani
Conductivity Of N-Dimensional Composites Containing Hyperspherical Inclusion, Ashok S. Sangani
Ashok S. Sangani
A problem of determining the macroscopic or effective thermal conductivity of an N-dimensional composite medium containing N-dimensional nonoverlapping hyperspherical inclusions is considered. Since the macroscopic conductivity is expected to become less sensitive to the detailed spatial distribution of the inclusions for N ≥ 4, only the special case of periodic arrangement of the inclusions is considered. An expression for the macroscopic conductivity correct to O(χ3N + 8), χ being the ratio of "diameter" of the inclusions to the spacing between them, is derived and the numerical results for the conductivity are presented as a function of χ and N for …

Todd B. Sauke
The rebinding kinetics of CO to myoglobin after flash photolysis is nonexponential in time below approximately 180 K; the kinetics is governed by a distribution of enthalpic barriers. This distribution results from inhomogeneities in the protein conformation, referred to as conformational substates. Hole-burning experiments on the Soret and IR CO-stretch bands test the assumption that an inhomogeneous distribution of conformational substates results in inhomogeneously broadened spectra. CO was slowly photolyzed at different wavelengths in the Soret band at 10 K. Both the Soret band and the CO-stretch band A1, centered at 1,945 cm-1, shift during photolysis, demonstrating that different wavelengths …

Isoprenylation Is Required For The Processing Of The Lamin A Precursor, Michael Sinensky, L. A. Beck, T. J. Hosick
Michael Sinensky
The nuclear lamina proteins, prelamin A, lamin B, and a 70-kD lamina-associated protein, are posttranslationally modified by a metabolite derived from mevalonate. This modification can be inhibited by treatment with (3-R,S)-3-fluoromevalonate, demonstrating that it is isoprenoid in nature. We have examined the association between isoprenoid metabolism and processing of the lamin A precursor in human and hamster cells. Inhibition of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase by mevinolin (lovastatin) specifically depletes endogenous isoprenoid pools and inhibits the conversion of prelamin A to lamin A. Prelamin A processing is also blocked by mevalonate starvation of Mev-1, a CHO cell line auxotrophic for mevalonate. …
