Amazon Goldcrest Project And The Relevance Of Comparability Analysis Under The Arm's Length Principle, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah May 2019

Amazon Goldcrest Project And The Relevance Of Comparability Analysis Under The Arm's Length Principle, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

The arm’s length principle, which has long been the guiding rule in the area of transfer pricing, in recent years is increasingly challenged. One of the focus points of discussion is the comparability analysis of intra-group and independent transactions. Especially intangibles do not lend themselves to such analysis, because they are unique in a way that does not match with existent market equilibria. The analysis of the Amazon case in this article reflects this argument.

The QLC spent the 2018-2019 academic year establishing itself as a thriving community and has gained standing as an officially recognized campus organization. The club is open to students who want to see themselves reflected in the literature they read - literature meant for an age that is particularly difficult for LGBTQ+ youth - and allies. Through the progression of the year, it was found that the QLC …

Professional Practices (ART 399)

Creating art allows me to delve into my mind and acknowledge specific memories and associations I have made with people, places, and events in my life. My works are created in a stream of conscious state and involve me recording my thoughts in a visual dialogue. The process itself then, becomes important because it is during this time, I uncover these parts of myself and my life.

My goal is for the viewer to make connections within the work but still be left in a sense of wonder. One of the most recognizable aspects of my work is my use …

Rod Gover. This software is posted here, along with the Ricci package.

The author has also prepared a special guidelines file describing the new software. This guidelines file briefly describes Mathematica and Ricci as well. One should read Section 3 of the guidelines file before saving the main software file …

Effect Of Larval Density And Substrate Quality On The Wing Geometry Of Stomoxys Calcitrans L. (Diptera: Muscidae), Steve B.S. Baleba, Daniel Masiga, Baldwyn Torto, Christopher W. Weldon, Merid N. Getahun May 2019

Effect Of Larval Density And Substrate Quality On The Wing Geometry Of Stomoxys Calcitrans L. (Diptera: Muscidae), Steve B.S. Baleba, Daniel Masiga, Baldwyn Torto, Christopher W. Weldon, Merid N. Getahun

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Background: In insects, oviposition decisions may lead to egg deposition in substrates with different larval density and nutritional levels. Individuals developing in such substrates may present plasticity in their phenotype. Here, we investigated the effect of two factors related to oviposition decisions, namely larval density and substrate quality, on the wing size and wing shape of the stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans L. (Diptera: Muscidae). Methods: We reared S. calcitrans larvae at different densities (5, 15 and 25) and on different substrates (camel, cow, donkey and sheep dung). For each fly that emerged, we recorded body weight, and detached, slide-mounted and …

Professional Practices (ART 399)

I have explored a number of ideas and media since starting my journey toward becoming an art educator. One that I seem to find myself returning to regularly is my interest in exploring mental illness. This derives from my experience with people in my life that have dealt with and continue to deal with mental illness, myself included. I want to raise awareness about mental health and the impact it has on the sufferer through my art.

I have touched on this idea in some of my past works, including a photo diptych that depicts the highs and lows of …

Innovation: The Determinant Of Success In Software., Oksana Pawlush

CURCE Annual Undergraduate Conference

This study examines the determinants of performance in the U.S. software sector. The emergence of the software industry has been a world changing phenomenon and created a highly competitive market and a profitable investment field. Using panel regression analysis on a sample of 730 U.S. based software firms spanning the period from 1995 to 2017, this study finds that intangible assets and staff expenses have a statistically significant positive impact on the performance of software companies, as measured by their return on assets and return on equity, respectively.

Understanding The Privacy Methods, Implications, And Challenges Of Educational Data Mining., Tyler Blanco, Liam Smith

CURCE Annual Undergraduate Conference

Studies on educational data mining have massively advanced the analytical understanding of student learning, outcome predictions, student modeling, and better evaluation. While the information retrieved can improve educational outcomes, such studies must not break the wall of trust or compromise student privacy. To this end, it’s imperative to understand the methods of how privacy is ensured in the field of educational data mining and learning analytics, the limitations of these strategies, the complications that may follow, and the possible resolutions. In this project, we take a systematic approach to review studies in the educational data mining field. Initially, we examine …

Neuroqueering Gender, Ren Koloni May 2019

Neuroqueering Gender, Ren Koloni

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Autistic women are much more likely to be misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, and underserved than autistic men, yet our relationship with our identities is much more complicated than simply “underdiagnosis.” At least in part because we are not as interested in or responsive to social norms, we are more likely to be transgender, non-binary, and/or gender non-conforming: some of us may not identify as women at all. Furthermore, because autism is a way of being that is uniquely different from allism (i.e., not being autistic), we are capable of experiencing gender in ways that are inherently unrelatable and inaccessible to allistic people. …

Professional Practices (ART 399)

When someone presents nothing about themselves to anyone other people rush in to fill the gaps in this person’s behavior. In my work I like to explore inevitable duplicity of living, such as the mind versus the body and saying versus thinking. When I create an image, I try to think about what I can hide and what I can reveal in the picture plane and how that impacts the meaning of the work. Layering imagery allows me to cover up and reveal different things in the composition, through this method, I can push certain things backwards and accentuate others …

Mental Health And Drug Use At Imsa, Megan Ptak '21, Melena Braggs '21, Emma Darbro '21, Brooke Bolsinger '21

Student Leadership Exchange (SLX)

Within our campus, there is an evident problem relating to drug use and to underlying mental health issues among students. It is known that the students at IMSA use drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism for their mental health issues; however, this issue is not discussed on our campus. While many measures have been put into action on campus to prevent drug use, there has been no action to solve the root of the problem, mental health issues. This leads to a continuous problem of drug use within our student body and has a lasting effect on the mental …

Student Leadership Exchange (SLX)

Prospective students across Illinois work excessively towards the achievement of getting accepted to the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. Though the selection process of applicants is meant to be fair and only admit the most qualified students, it has been found that this process has its flaws. While GPA and SAT scores are factored into these decisions, additional factors such as geographic, gender, and ethnic criteria are involved. Measures such as Affirmative Action are put into place to ensure each student has a fair opportunity to education. However, one result of IMSA’s attempt to comply with its statutory requirement to …

Student Leadership Exchange (SLX)

THRIVE (Taking Health Right into Varied Education) is a weekly program designed to help teenagers with autism improve their social skills by working with other kids in their situation. We aim to give kids with autism an opportunity to improve their social skills through a program that runs on every Saturday of the month. We wanted to do this program because we feel that there is not enough action in our communities and there is a negative stigma about people with Autism, therefore they do not get the help that they need. We need to combat this issue and we …

Box Office Showdown: How Does Movie Market Saturation Affect First Weekend Box Office Revenues?, Matthew Steele May 2019

Box Office Showdown: How Does Movie Market Saturation Affect First Weekend Box Office Revenues?, Matthew Steele

Economics Honors Projects

The scheduling of release dates for feature films is among the most important decisions that movie studios make in the life cycle of a movie. While the economic literature on the movie industry has largely focused on modeling the box office success of a movie based on its own characteristics—star power, critical reception, and trailer data—there is a dearth of literature concerning the way that competition from within the industry affects box office revenues. This article primarily uses a propensity score matching model to fill a gap in the literature, establishing causal relationships between different forms of competition and first …
