Population Dynamics Of The Diamondback Moth And Its Parasitoids In Zimbabwe, Rudo Sithole, Casper Nyamukondiwa, Peter Chinwada, Bernhard Lohr

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Temporal population dynamics of the diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (L.) and its parasitoids were studied for a continuous 13-months period at two sites in Zimbabwe, vis Henderson and Mutoko. Our results showed that mean DBM numbers of 2.2 and 2.9 per plant for Henderson and Mutoko, respectively were not significantly different (p = 0.12). At Henderson, the DBM numbers achieved a pre-winter peak in February and a post-winter peak in October, while at Mutoko the pre-winter and post-winter peaks were reached a month earlier, in January and September, respectively. A total of four parasitoid species, comprising Cotesia vestalis, Oomyzus …

On Sectored Sensor To Actuator Networked Control Systems Architectures With Fault Tolerance At The Sensor Level, Rana Hassan Elmaraashly

Theses and Dissertations

Networked Control Systems are broadly implemented to meet the demands of many critical industrial applications. This study proposes an NCS system that employs Sectoring to a Sensor to Actuator (S2A) architecture. The proposed system guarantees no over delayed packets with zero packet loss using Gigabit Ethernet, and this is accomplished using Riverbed Modeler simulations. Hence, succeeding in meeting all the required real-time constraints. System performance is then compared quantitatively to the in-loop and the S2A NCS models. Moreover, Sift-out modular redundancy is implemented at the sensor level. It is evident that the system can sustain the extra network load with …

Interdisciplinary Comparison Of Scientific Impact Of Publications Using The Citation-Ratio, Arthur Remco Bos May 2019

Interdisciplinary Comparison Of Scientific Impact Of Publications Using The Citation-Ratio, Arthur Remco Bos

Faculty Journal Articles

The commonly used indexes for evaluating the scientific impact of publications and individual researchers do not allow accurate comparison between disciplines with varying citation frequencies. The Citation-Ratio (CR) was developed to measure impact of an individual publication and allow field-normalised comparison. The CR equals the total number of citations of a publication divided by the median of citations of its references and was tested for the top 5% of the most-cited publications of 13 selected disciplines in sciences, social sciences and humanities. Each publication had a CR = 0 until it was firstly cited. At CR = 1 the number …

What Is A Game Of Chance? An Application To Loot Boxes, Wessel Oomens May 2019

What Is A Game Of Chance? An Application To Loot Boxes, Wessel Oomens

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

The traditional landscape of games of chance such as lotteries, betting, casinos and slots has become intertwined with complex financial products as well as digital games with elements of chance.

The Netherlands Gambling Authority has issued a guidance paper outlining a five-step decision process in order to determine whether a game classifies as gambling:

  • Threshold: is the number of providers, players and the amount money involved considerable enough to warrant spending resources in assessing the game?
  • Overlap: is there potential overlap with other rules and regulations, in particular those governing financial products?
  • Prize: does the game award its winners with …

Controlling The Stereodynamics Of Cold Molecular Collisions, Balakrishnan Naduvalath, J. F. E. Croft, Meng Huang, Hua Guo May 2019

Controlling The Stereodynamics Of Cold Molecular Collisions, Balakrishnan Naduvalath, J. F. E. Croft, Meng Huang, Hua Guo

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

We report numerically-exact quantum scattering calculations for low-energy collisions of quantum-state prepared HD with H2. Excellent agreement is obtained with recent measurements of Perreault et al. for the angular distribution of scattered HD at a collision energy of 1 K. By state-preparation of the HD molecules, control of the angular distribution of scattered HD was demonstrated. The stereo-dynamic control is achieved by the ability to choose a single or a coherent superposition of quantum states. We present a first-principles simulation of the experiment which enables us to attribute the main features of the observed angular distribution to a single L …

A New Uav-Based Module Lifting And Transporting Method: Advantages And Challenges, Jin Choi, Dong Bin Kim

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

The modular construction technique is the one key technology that can substantially advance the competitiveness of the construction industry. However, the industry is having difficulty creating an optimum environment for broader and more effective use of modularization due to one key barrier: implementing a modular construction technique, that is, shipping modules from the fabrication shop to the build site. Multiple issues are potentially challenging to overcome, such as module size and center of gravity, rigging, tie-down, site access, site congestion, and transportation regulations, as well as the availability of local heavy lift equipment. The researchers propose to implement drones as …

The Annexation Of Hawai'i: A Violation Of Foreign Sovereignty By The United States Of America, Larissa R. Schuermyer

Honors Projects

The Kingdom of Hawai’i was annexed by the United States of America in 1898 and was given statehood in 1959. Prior to its annexation, the Kingdom of Hawai’i had a legitimate functioning government with sovereign recognition from many in the international arena, including the United States, as early as 1840. This article analyzes current and past definitions of the state and sovereignty, as well as precedence from international law, to determine if the United States violated the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Hawai’i before and during the annexation process. A preponderance of evidence, including explanations of the preexisting Hawaiian political …
