Professional Practices (ART 399)
I create graphic design pieces with the goal of inciting a feeling in the viewers. I have found through the years that creating a well developed color pallet is a major part of my process as an artist. This is because color can help enhance the specific emotion or idea that I am pushing for. I enjoy designing a variety of posters over subjects from music to commentary on social issues. The reason I choose the topics of mental health awareness, suicide awareness, gender roles, domestic violence, drug abuse, and other similar topics is because I want people to stop …

Coupling Of Gc-Ms/Ms To Principal Component Analysis For Assessment Of Matrix Effect: Efficient Determination Of Ultra-Low Levels Of Pesticide Residues In Some Functional Foods, Wael Mamdouh Sayed Ahmed
Faculty Journal Articles
Functional foods provide nutritional and health benefits, yet they could be contaminated with residues like pesticides and polychlorobiphenyls. These residues affect the safety, quality, and consequently the commercial value of functional foods. Therefore, the validity and efficiency of residue determination methods constitute a major analytical concern. Reduction of matrix effect (ME) has always been the golden key for guaranteed sensitivity, selectivity, and high throughput analysis. This study aims for accurate determination and streamlined quantification of 200 pesticide residues in 16 matrices. Hence, QuEChERS protocol coupled to GC-MS/MS was then employed and separations were obtained in 25 min. Dilution of the …

Background: Social inequities are widening globally, contributing to growing health and health care inequities. Health inequities are unjust differences in health and well-being between and within groups of people caused by socially structured, and thus avoidable, marginalizing conditions such as poverty and systemic racism. In Canada, such conditions disproportionately affect Indigenous persons, racialized newcomers, those with mental health and substance use issues, and those experiencing interpersonal violence. Despite calls to enhance equity in health care to contribute to improving population health, few studies examine how to achieve equity at the point of care, and the impacts of doing so. Many …

How Egypt's Foreign Policy Is Made: شهادتي, Bahgat Korany, Ahmed Aboul Gheit
Audio & Video by Faculty: Webinars, interviews, documentaries, etc...
As a pivotal state, Egypt's foreign policy has constants, "Arab Spring" or not. What are these constants? But specially, how do they cope with evolving regional-global context and new challenges? No better witness can guide us for answers to these questions other than Ambassador Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Egypt's foremer foreign minister (2004-2011) and current Secretary-General of the League of Arab States.
The Impact Of Collusion On The Operation Of A Fraudulent Mortgage Origination Network, Cynthia Waddell
The Impact Of Collusion On The Operation Of A Fraudulent Mortgage Origination Network, Cynthia Waddell
Presidential Alumni Research Dissemination Award
Statement on Auditing Standards (SAS) No. 99 illustrates the three fraud conditions (incentives/pressures, opportunities, and rationalizations/attitudes) in detail, but devotes less emphasis to collusion, another important element of fraud. The problem is that lack of research on the impact of collusion, especially at the transaction level, prevents auditors from focusing on this critical element during financial statement audits. Network theory was used to examine the impact of collusive relationships in a mortgage fraud network that operated in a midwestern city from 2003 to 2005. Data were collected from both private and public records. Research questions addressed the role of the …

We used differences in state school policies as natural experiments to evaluate the joint influence of educational quantity and quality on late-life physical and mental health. Using US census microsample data, historical measures of state compulsory schooling and school quality (term length, student-teacher ratio, and attendance rates) were combined via regression modeling on a scale corresponding to years of education (Policy Predicted Years of Education [PPYEd]). PPYEd values were linked to individual-level records for 8,920 black and 14,605 white participants aged 45+ in the REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke study (2003-2007). Linear and quantile regression models estimated …

Evidencing The Middle East: The Auc Forum Data Bank, Bahgat Korany, Amr Shaarawi, Iman Megahed
Audio & Video by Faculty: Webinars, interviews, documentaries, etc...
The Middle East continues to be the most central and newsworthy region, globally. However, we are drowned by information rather than analysis and often opinion instead of evidence. To help researchers, students and even the interested public to cope with these (mis)information challenges, the AUC Forum Data Bank has been in preparation for more than six years. With the help of the Office of Strategy Management and Institutional Effectiveness (formerly DAIR), it presents data on 35 variables — mostly for the period from 1970 to 2018 — that aims to decode both the present and future of this region. The …

Dataset For Evaluation Of The Ankle Roll Guard’S Effectiveness To Improve Clinical Benefit, Wyatt D. Ihmels, Kayla D. Seymore, Tyler N. Brown
Center for Orthopaedic and Biomechanics Research Data Repository
Ankle Roll Guard is a new, patent protected orthopedic product. The Ankle Roll Guard Armor1 provides an individual protection from “rolling” or spraining their ankle via a lightweight buttress on the lateral aspect of their shoe. This design prevents the ankle from rolling or inverting past 30 degrees, postures where injury is reported to occur, without placing mechanical restriction on the joint. This key innovation allows the user a natural, unrestricted ankle range of motion without compromising the product’s injury protection. Existing prophylactic products, however, provide ankle stability via mechanical restriction to the joint. While these prophylactic products are somewhat …

The genus Rhynchophorus (Herbst 1795) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a key pest of palms worldwide, but information on Rhynchophorus spp. attacking the oil palm, Elaeis guineensis Jaquin in Uganda is outdated. This study was carried out to establish the diversity, distribution and incidence of Rhynchophorus spp. on E. guineensis at three production set-ups namely large-scale plantations, adaptive trials and small-scale farms in three (Lake Victoria Crescent, Lake Albert Crescent and Western Highlands) agro-ecological zones in Uganda; and to establish the effect of vicinity to natural vegetation on incidence of the pest. Two surveys were conducted in 2018 during the dry and …

Oh Production And Jet Length Of An Atmospheric-Pressure Plasma Jet For Soft And Biomaterial Treatment, Ryan P. Gott, Kunning G. Xu
PRC-Affiliated Research
Atmospheric-pressure plasma jets (APPJs) are currently being studied and developed for the biomedical, chemistry, and physics communities because of their ability to produce desirable reactive species at low temperatures and at atmospheric pressures. Due to the high particle densities, small scales, and nonequilibrium nature of these plasmas, they can be difficult to predict and compare across devices. In this article, a plasma jet is operated over a range of conditions and characterized by using optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and synchronized imaging. The effect of the operating conditions on the gas temperature, jet length, plasma formation, and reactive species produced is …

Conspecific brood parasitism allows females to exploit other females’ nests and enhance their reproductive output. Here, we test a recent theoretical model of how host females gain inclusive fitness from brood parasitism. High levels of relatedness between host and parasitizer can be maintained either by; 1) kin recognizing and parasitizing each other as a form of cooperative breeding or 2) natal philopatry and nest site fidelity facilitating the formation of kin groups increasing the probability of parasitism between relatives nesting in close proximity. To address these two hypotheses we genotyped feathers and hatch membranes of common eiders (Somateria mollissima) from …

Over the past decade several studies have reported the use of high intensity ultrasound (HIU) to induce the crystallization of lipids. The effect that HIU has on lipid crystallization is usually attributed to the generation of cavities but acoustic cavitation has never been fully explored in lipids. The dynamics of a particular cavitation cluster next to a piston like emitter in an oil, was investigated in this study. The lipid systems, which are important in food processing, are studied with high-speed camera imaging, laser scattering and pressure measurements. A sequence of stable clusters were noted. In addition, a bifurcated streamer …

Experienced Males Recognise And Avoid Mating With Non-Virgin Females In The Western Flower Thrips, Adeyemi O. Akinyemi, William D.J. Kirk
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
The western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is a major insect pest on a wide range of crops throughout the world. There are several unexplained aspects of the mating behaviour, particularly in relation to male-male competition and mate choice. The objectives of the study were to test whether males can detect the mating status of females and whether males avoid mating with previously mated females. Experiments involved either 'experienced' adults taken from a laboratory culture, which had been exposed to high densities of thrips, or virgin adults reared individually. Experienced males mated readily with virgin females, but avoided mating …
