Insects For Sustainable Animal Feed: Inclusive Business Models Involving Smallholder Farmers, Shaphan Y. Chia, Chrysantus M. Tanga, Joop Ja Van Loon, Marcel Dicke

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Global population growth, an increasing demand for animal products and scarcity of conventional feed ingredients drive the search for alternative protein sources for animal feed. Extensive research indicates that insects provide good opportunities as a sustainable, high quality and low-cost component of animal feed. Here, we discuss how insect farming can promote inclusive business for smallholder farmers in the agribusiness value chain. Inclusive business models involving insects as ingredients in feed may contribute to solving socio-economic and environmental problems in developing countries, aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. With low initial capital investments, smallholder insect farmers have good …

Most malaria-endemic countries are heavily reliant upon rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) for malaria case identification and treatment. RDT previously used for malaria diagnosis can subsequently be used for molecular assays, including qualitative assessment of parasite species present or the carriage of resistance markers, because parasite DNA can be extracted from the blood inside the RDT which remains preserved on the internal components. However, the quantification of parasite density has not previously been possible from used RDT. In this study, blood samples were collected from school-age children in Western Kenya, in the form of both dried blood spots on Whatman filter …

Evaluating The Effects Of The Preoxidation Of H2o2, Naclo, And Kmno4 And Reflocculation On The Dewaterability Of Sewage Sludge., Tamer Shoeib

Faculty Journal Articles

The preoxidation effects of H2O2, NaClO, and KMnO4 on the dewaterability of sewage sludge were compared by analyzing the changes in specific resistance to filtration (SRF), filter cake moisture content (FCMC), extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) fractions and components, and floc properties. The three oxidants varied in oxidation efficiency and exhibited distinctive mechanisms. NaClO not only destroyed sludge flocs and EPSs but also effectively caused cell lysis, resulting in release of a considerable amount of organic matters and subsequently significant deterioration of dewatering performance. The oxidation of H2O2 and KMnO4 was relatively mild and occurred mainly on the outer layers of …

Zoonotic pathogens can harm human health and wellbeing directly or by impacting livestock. Pathogens that spillover from wildlife can also impair conservation efforts if humans perceive wildlife as pests. Brucellosis, caused by the bacterium Brucella abortus, circulates in elk and bison herds of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and poses a risk to cattle and humans. Our goal was to understand the relative effects of climatic drivers, host demography, and management control programs on disease dynamics.

Synthesis and applications: Positive serostatus is often weakly correlated with infectiousness but is nevertheless used to make management decisions including lethal removal in wildlife disease …

Crustal Density Variation Of The Eastern U.S., Henglei Zhang, Dhananjay Ravat, Anthony R. Lowry

Earth and Environmental Sciences Research Data

EarthScope’s USArray Transportable Array (TA) has shortcomings for the purpose of interpreting geologic features of wavelengths less than the 70 km TA station spacing, but these can be overcome by using higher spatial resolution gravity data. In this study, we exploit USArray receiver functions to reduce non-uniqueness in the interpretation of gravity anomalies. We model gravity anomalies from previously-derived density variations of sedimentary basins, crustal Vp/Vs variation, Moho variation, and upper mantle density variation derived from body-wave imaging informed by surface wave tomography to estimate Vp/Vs. Although average densities and density contrasts for these seismic variations can be derived, …

PRC-Affiliated Research

In this work, we present the first demonstration of a quasi-continuous-wave diode-pumped metastable xenon laser at atmospheric pressures. Lasing in metastable noble gas species has received increased attention in the last few years as a possible high-power laser source. This demonstration shows that metastable xenon has a sufficiently broad absorption spectrum to be pumped with a broad-bandwidth diode laser. This implies that a high-power metastable xenon gas laser should be achievable using high-power pump diodes.

B.A./B.S. Practicum Group Exhibit (ART 499)

I create graphic design pieces with the goal of inciting a feeling in the viewers. I have found through the years that creating a well developed color pallet is a major part of my process as an artist. This is because color can help enhance the specific emotion or idea that I am pushing for. I enjoy designing a variety of posters over subjects from music to commentary on social issues. The reason I choose the topics of mental health awareness, suicide awareness, gender roles, domestic violence, drug abuse, and other similar topics is because I want people to stop …

Data Set For Patterns And Mechanisms Of Heterogeneous Breeding Distribution Shifts Of North American Migratory Birds, Hanna M. Mccaslin, Julie A. Heath Nov 2019

Data Set For Patterns And Mechanisms Of Heterogeneous Breeding Distribution Shifts Of North American Migratory Birds, Hanna M. Mccaslin, Julie A. Heath

Biological Sciences Data

There is widespread evidence that species distributions are shifting in response to climate change. Warming temperatures and climate niche constraints are hypothesized drivers of northward shifts in temperate migratory bird breeding distributions, but heterogeneity in the direction of distribution shifts suggests that the climate niche hypothesis does not explain all changes in distributions. We propose that changes in the costs and benefits of migration are related to dampened seasonal differences between breeding and winter areas, sensitivity to supplemental cues, a mismatch-driven fitness gradient, or a combination of these drivers may explain southward distribution shifts. We examined latitudinal shifts in breeding …

Through The Words Of Those Who Have Experienced It: Reading The Whitney Plantation Along Neoslave Narratives, Sarah Payne Nov 2019

Through The Words Of Those Who Have Experienced It: Reading The Whitney Plantation Along Neoslave Narratives, Sarah Payne

Study the South

Recent representations of slavery, however well intentioned, have provoked discussions about who should represent black pain and oppression and what purpose such representations serve. Also evoking such questions are contemporary plantation tours, most of which are white-centered, “moonlight and magnolia” recreations. There have been efforts to represent slavery more accurately at plantations such as Oak Alley, and most notably, the Whitney Plantation, which opened in 2014 in Wallace, Louisiana.

This essay asks how our understanding of the Whitney Plantation, as a representation of slavery, a public history project, and an example of dark tourism, might be affected by reading the …

Metagenomics Characterization Of Red Snapper Microbiome Following Cewaf And Pathogen Exposure, Andrea Tarnecki Nov 2019

Metagenomics Characterization Of Red Snapper Microbiome Following Cewaf And Pathogen Exposure, Andrea Tarnecki

C-IMAGE data

The microbiome associated with organisms plays a vital role in disease susceptibility via competitive exclusion of opportunistic pathogens. Unbalanced bacterial communities (dysbiosis) can decrease the ability of the microbiome to exclude pathogens, leading to increased susceptibility to infection. This study used 16S rRNA sequencing in order to characterize the adherent gut microbiome of red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) during exposure to chemically enhanced water accommodated fraction of oil (CEWAF) to determine the impacts of exposure on microbiome structure as well as identify if dysbiosis plays a role in disease.

Adolescent Male Behaviors As Portrayed In The Disney Sitcom Hannah Montana, Erin T. Maurer Nov 2019

Adolescent Male Behaviors As Portrayed In The Disney Sitcom Hannah Montana, Erin T. Maurer

Honors College Theses

This research project uses content analysis to examine themes related to toxic masculinity and misogyny in the sitcom Hannah Montana. In particular, the sitcom’s child character Rico Suave is shown to be misogynistic when interacting with women. There is little literature on the topic of representation of toxic masculinity as shown in child characters, but there are many examples in modern media, such as the trope of the child being attracted to the babysitter, the lifeguard, and the friend of an older sibling. Using similarly-formatted transcripts from seasons two, three, and four, I pulled all lines of dialogue and stage …

Political Scientist Christina Rivers: Restoring The Fundamental Right To Vote, University Marketing And Communications, Christina Rivers

DePaul Download

A democracy that’s truly representative of the people depends on the people to exercise their right to vote. There are some groups of people, however, who regularly don’t vote—because they don’t know they’re eligible. Contrary to popular belief, in Illinois, a convicted felon regains eligibility to vote as soon as he or she leaves a corrections facility. Anyone awaiting trial in jail is eligible to vote, too. DePaul political scientist Christina Rivers, an expert in voting rights and a DePaul Presidential Fellow, helped pass legislation to provide voter education to soon-to-be released inmates. In this episode, she discusses these initiatives, …

Egyptians' Daily Security And Ethiopia's Dam: Is Desalination A Way Out Of The Water War?, Bahgat Korany, Adham Ramadan

Audio & Video by Faculty: Webinars, interviews, documentaries, etc...

Egypt — like many countries in the Middle East — has gone beyond water-poverty to what the United Nations calls the level of «water stress.» Across history, droughts have been associated with population displacement, disappearance of cities and even decline of civilizations. Since Egypt is not a rainy country and Egyptians count for 94% of their daily lives on Nile waters, serious security risks are becoming increasingly imminent after building the Renaissance Dam? Is there a way out of an impending national catastrophe? What do research findings tell us?
