Automatic And Adaptive Signal- And Background-Rois With Analytic-Representation-Based Processing For Robust Webcam-Based Heart-Rate Estimation, James John, Syam Krishna, Ramesh R. Galigekere

Open Access archive

Determining a suitable, adaptive region of interest (ROI) automatically for extracting information related to cardiac activity (signal-ROI/S-ROI), and another containing information on ambient light-fluctuation (background-ROI/B-ROI, as close as possible to the signal-ROI), and robust signal processing are important in webcam based heart-rate (HR) estimation - in real life situations. We describe a novel method of automatically determining both the ROIs. The forehead is the candidate for the S-ROI, due to its uniformity and minimum vulnerability for deformation. We first identify the skin-pixels within the face-region detected by the Viola-Jones (VJ) algorithm. The forehead-region, and a uniform sub-rectangle within it not …

The Neuropeptide Drosulfakinin Regulates Social Isolation-Induced Aggression In Drosophila, Pavan Agrawal, Damian Kao, Phuong Chung, Loren L. Looger

Open Access archive

Social isolation strongly modulates behavior across the animal kingdom. We utilized the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster to study social isolation-driven changes in animal behavior and gene expression in the brain. RNA-seq identified several head-expressed genes strongly responding to social isolation or enrichment. Of particular interest, social isolation downregulated expression of the gene encoding the neuropeptide Drosulfakinin (Dsk), the homologue of vertebrate cholecystokinin (CCK), which is critical for many mammalian social behaviors. Dsk knockdown significantly increased social isolation-induced aggression. Genetic activation or silencing of Dsk neurons each similarly increased isolation-driven aggression. Our results suggest a U-shaped dependence of social isolation-induced aggressive …

A Novel Low Power And Reduced Transistor Count Magnetic Arithmetic Logic Unit Using Hybrid Stt-Mtj/Cmos Circuit, Prashanth Barla, Vinod Kumar Joshi, Somashekara Bhat

Open Access archive

One of the major concern for CMOS technology is the increase in power dissipation as the technology node lowers down to deep submicron region. Magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) working on Spin transfer torque (STT) switching mechanism is recognized as one of the most promising spintronic device for post CMOS era due to its non-volatility, high speed, high endurance, CMOS compatibility and mainly the low power dissipation which can offer the solutions for the problems posed by existing CMOS technology. We have proposed a novel logic-in-memory (LIM) architecture of magnetic arithmetic logic unit (P-MALU) based on hybrid STT-MTJ/CMOS circuits. Simulation results …

Elevational gradients are considered important for understanding causes behind gradients in species richness due to the large variation in climate and habitat within a small spatial extent. Geometric constraints are thought to interact with environmental variables and influence elevational patterns in species richness. However, the geographic setting of most mountain ranges, particularly continuity with low elevation areas may reduce the effect of geometric constraints at lower elevations. In the present study, we test the effects of climatic gradients and continuity with the low elevation plains of the eastern Himalayan mountain range on patterns of species richness. We studied species richness …

Movement And Place-Making In A Monsoon Terrain, Deepta Sateesh Jan 2020

Movement And Place-Making In A Monsoon Terrain, Deepta Sateesh

Open Access archive

The territorialization of the Western Ghats, India, is an act of colonial power either by settled or marginalized particular peoples, practices, and ecologies, privileging a wet-dry binary and spa-tializing a monsoon landscape. The environment of the Western Ghats, in particular, has been politicized and polarized. Today, indigenous peoples and other 'forest dwellers' have been compromised through the inherited colonial framework; they are excluded by conservation action as is their knowledge that is based on dynamic everyday relationships with place. Efforts to be inclusive are fraught with inadequacies of colonial imaging and use the language that continue to objectify and spatialize …

The optic nerve is the second cranial nerve. It is supplied by the central retinal artery. It is said that this artery starts getting incorporated within the optic nerve at around the sixth week of gestation, and by the ninth week it is entirely inside the optic nerve. However, the point of incorporation lies in the intraorbital course of the optic nerve. The present study aimed at identifying the location of the central retinal artery inside the optic nerve, i.e. the peripheral or central position. Human fetuses of second and third trimester were dissected to expose the optic nerve. Morphometric …

To successfully colonize a host or environment, certain genera and species of Gram-positive bacteria have evolved to utilize the so-called sortase-dependent pilus, a long multi-subunit and non-flagellar surface adhesin. One example of this is Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, a gut-adapted probiotic strain that produces SpaCBA pili. These structures are covalent hetero-oligomers built from three types of pilin subunit, each with a specific location and function (i.e., backbone SpaA for length, tip SpaC for adhesion, and basal SpaB for anchoring). Functionally, the SpaCBA pilus exhibits a promiscuous affinity for components on intestinal surfaces (e.g., mucus, collagen, and epithelial cells), which is largely …

Dreaming The Welfare-State: Indian Women-Studies-Movement, Neoliberalism And Feminist Future, Cheshta Arora

Open Access archive

Through an account of the history of women-studies-movements in India, the paper aims to interrogate the ‘temporality’ of feminist response to the neoliberal reality. By juxtaposing two dominant narratives situated differently, the paper appeals for a reevaluation of contemporary feminist knowledges that bemoan the loss of ‘welfare state’ and collective political struggles. Through a critical account of women-studies-movements in India, and the inability of their dominant stories to respond to the current conundrums of responding to the ‘neoliberal’ subject, the paper argues that it is not just the neoliberal reality which is hegemonic and all too powerful, but also the …
