Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

I make paintings, sculptures, and installations that explore the nature of consumption and commodity. I am interested in how it has become the center of modern culture, and how we often overindulge. My paintings explore the fetishization of "the good old days" and the limbic drive to recreate past pleasures- often remembered more blissfully than they actually were. People want to follow what feels good, and are often found engaging in detrimental activities, trying to recreate the “magic” of their first time doing so. Consumption as a vehicle for escapism is also a common theme in my practice. My sculptures …

“Moderated”; How Facebook And Youtube Recreate The Meaning Of The Societal Public Square, Dylan John Kreisman

Journalism

This study investigates the prevalence of content moderation systems on digital intermediaries and the influence those systems have on the spread of information. It primarily analyzes the content moderation systems of Facebook and YouTube. Since Facebook and YouTube are two of the most used online platforms in the world, the way content is shared and viewed can have implications towards a person’s perspective on a subject. Social media and online intermediaries are growing as people’s source of news, so the primary way people view news in the near future will most likely be from intermediaries such as Facebook or YouTube. …

Otim, James P. Egonyu

The recent isolation of an atoxigenic strain of Aspergillus flavus (Link) (Eurotiales: Trichocomaceae), which was virulent to all stages of Xylosandrus compactus (Eichhoff) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) has generated interest to investigate virulence of the entomopathogenic fungus against other crop pests, and how it compares with established commercial biopesticides. In this study, we tested the pathogenicity and virulence of the atoxigenic A. flavus strain to Ootheca mutabilis (Sahlberg) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in the laboratory compared to the commercial Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschnikoff Sorokin) (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae; OD®, ICIPE 69). Serial dilutions of both entomopathogenic fungi (1 × 106–1 × 109 conidia/ml) were evaluated against adult …

Local knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding African Indigenous Vegetables (AIVs) among local growers are required to design effective vegetable productivity-enhancing interventions. However, limited studies have been conducted in Kenya to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices on production performance of AIVs. A survey was conducted among 600 AIV growers in Busia, Nyamira and Machakos Counties of Kenya to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding AIVs and their contribution on output/yield. Primary data were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire supplemented with key informant interviews. Results showed significant knowledge and positive attitude of farmers regarding AIVs, but insignificant use of …

The Pharmacokinetic Drug-Drug Interactions Of Andrographis Paniculata And Ibuprofen In The Plasma Of Healthy Oryctolagus Cuniculus Rabbits, Mutakin Mutakin, Sandra Megantara, Batari A. Larasati, Yogiyanto Yogiyanto, Jutti Levita, Slamet Ibrahim

Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy Research

An HPLC method was developed and validated for the pharmacokinetic drug-drug interaction between Andrographis paniculata and ibuprofen in the plasma of Oryctolagus cuniculus rabbits after a single oral administration of the mixture. Nine healthy rabbits (6 males and 3 females, weight 1.68-2.42 kg) were acclimatized for 7 days and were randomly divided into 3 groups. At day-8th the rabbits were group (1) treated with a single oral administration of ibuprofen (dose of 28 mg/kg BW); group (2) treated with a single oral administration of Andrographis paniculata infusion (7.04 mL/kg BW); group (3) treated with a single oral administration of a …

The internal rotation of methyl groups and nuclear quadrupole moments of the halogens Cl, Br, I in o-halotoluenes cause complex spectral fine and hyperfine structures in rotational spectra arising from angular momentum coupling. Building on the existing data regarding o-fluorotoluene and o-chlorotoluene, the investigations of o-bromotoluene and o-iodotoluene allow for a complete analysis of the homologous series of o-halogenated toluenes. The trend in the methyl barriers to internal rotation rising with the size of the halogen can be rationalised by repulsion effects as predicted by MP2 calculations. Furthermore, the analysis of the observed quadrupole coupling serves as a quantitative intra-molecular …

The Coronavirus (CoV) is a large family of viruses known to cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to acute respiratory tract infection. The severity of the infection may be visible as pneumonia, acute respiratory syndrome, and even death. Until the outbreak of SARS, this group of viruses was greatly overlooked. However, since the SARS and MERS outbreaks, these viruses have been studied in greater detail, propelling the vaccine research. On December 31, 2019, mysterious cases of pneumonia were detected in the city of Wuhan in China's Hubei Province. On January 7, 2020, the causative agent was identified as a …

Background: Mesenchymal stromal cell conditioned medium (MSC-CM) contains a cocktail of bioactive factors that act synergistically to induce therapeutic effects. This has been clearly demonstrated by in vivo applications of MSC-CM, but the establishment of controlled delivery systems is an unmet requirement for clinical translation. Methods: We developed a nanocomposite-hydrogel (NP-H) comprised of poly-L-lactide nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in gelatin/hyaluronic acid (Gel/HA) hydrogel as a delivery vehicle for MSC-CM. First, we optimized the culture conditions for bone marrow-derived MSCs using serum-containing medium (SCM) and serum-free medium (SFM) and characterized the corresponding CM (serum-containing conditioned medium (ScCM) and serum-free conditioned medium (SfCM), …

More Pricks Than Kicks: The Southern Economy In The Long Twentieth Century, Peter A. Coclanis

Study the South

Most scholars and journalists working on the South would likely agree that over the past fifty or sixty years southern states on balance benefitted from a diverse, but generally reasonable and reasonably successful portfolio of policies and programs in the “economic development” space. The fact that the region is still the poorest, the unhealthiest, and the least educated in the United States, a half century or more after the beginning of the “Sunbelt boom” says a lot about the difficulty of extricating a region once it is headed down a pernicious economic path.
