Surface Functionalization With Cobalt Complexes For Electro/Photocatalytic Proton Reduction, Dejun Dong

Doctoral Dissertations

The energy shortage and the global climate change have drawn great attention from humankind. Scientists worldwide are trying to find a green energy pathway. Shifting from a primarily fossil fuel-based energy economy to a solar fuel derived energy economy is a promising solution to eliminate greenhouse gases emissions and to protect our climate.

Electrocatalysis and photocatalysis are two practical strategies devised to generate solar fuels. Catalysis using transition metal complexes have been intensively investigated as their structures can be precisely controlled allowing an understanding of the mechanism of the catalytic reactions. This ultimately allows improvement of the activity can be …

Revisiting Institutional Voids: Advancing The International Business Literature By Leveraging Social Sciences, Marleen Dieleman, Stanislav Markus, Tazeeb Rajwani, George White Iii

Faculty Publications

Institutions are vital for solving collective action problems and enabling functioning markets. Based on this notion, the institutional voids literature has offered a dynamic research agenda for international business scholarship. In this perspective article, we leverage work from political science, development economics, legal studies, and anthropology to: (a) expose hidden assumptions about institutional voids in the management literature; (b) propose new directions for research based on our revised assumptions; and (c) provide direction-specific theoretical constructs from other social sciences to stimulate theory-building and empirical inquiry into institutional voids. We develop a framework that identifies four revised assumptions about institutional voids …

Invasive alien species (IAS) rank among the most significant drivers of species extinction and ecosystem degradation resulting in significant impacts on socio-economic development. The recent exponential spread of IAS in most of Africa is attributed to poor border biosecurity due to porous borders that have failed to prevent initial introductions. In addition, countries lack adequate information about potential invasions and have limited capacity to reduce the risk of invasions. Horizon scanning is an approach that prioritises the risks of potential IAS through rapid assessments. A group of 28 subject matter experts used an adapted methodology to assess 1700 potential IAS …

Imagining Urban Transformation In Kenya, Rose Cairns, Joel Onyango, Andy Stirling, Phil Johnstone Sep 2022

Imagining Urban Transformation In Kenya, Rose Cairns, Joel Onyango, Andy Stirling, Phil Johnstone

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

This paper examines the diverse ways in which science and technology are implicated in collective imaginations of urban futures in Kenya. Despite calls for a ‘deep reimagining’ of African urbanisation (UN Habitat 2014), globalised narratives of urban ‘smartness’ are intersecting with pan-African tendencies toward top-down Master Planning to constrain spaces for collective imagining of urban futures. Using the conceptual lens of sociotechnical imaginaries and the methodological approach of Q method, we hope to open up and navigate the space of tension between the violence of narratives of failure and crisis in African cities, and the sometimes ‘blinding power’ of certain …

Predictable Book Shifting, Joshua Lambert Aug 2022

Predictable Book Shifting, Joshua Lambert

MSU Libraries

There are many methods to carry out a library book shift but those methods allow for varying degrees of predictability. The Bookshift.py script, when used in conjunction with accurate measurements of a library’s collection and shelving, provides library staff with predictability, flexibility, and the ability to shift in parallel. For every shelf, the script outputs a phrase such as the following, “The last book from this shelf goes 12.3 in/cm into shelf 776.” While complicated shifts can still create surprises, using Bookshift.py or similar methods typically make those surprises easy to correct.

Commentary On Consumer Protection Act, 2019, Ashok R. Patil Aug 2022

Commentary On Consumer Protection Act, 2019, Ashok R. Patil

Books

The development of new technology in the form of e-commerce and the increasing integration of global markets and supply chains have changed the way consumers interact with the marketplace. This has given rise to new challenges for the consumer, and the existing consumer protection framework falls short in dealing with them. To address these concerns, the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, seeks to lay down a more robust scheme for consumer protection with the introduction of new measures such as the establishment of a general regulator, providing for a product liability regime, encouraging mediation, and developing appropriate regulations to protect and …

The oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel), and marula fruit fly, Ceratitis cosyra (Walker), are major fruit-infesting tephritids across sub-Saharan Africa. Biological control of these pests using parasitic wasps has been widely adopted but with varying levels of success. Most studies investigating host-parasitoid models have focused on functional and evolutionary aspects leaving a knowledge gap about the physiological mechanisms underpinning the efficacy of parasitoids as biocontrol agents of tephritids. To better understand these physiological mechanisms, we investigated changes in the cellular immune responses of C. cosyra and B. dorsalis when exposed to the parasitic wasps, Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmaed) and Psyttalia …

A Support Vector Machine Based Cure Rate Model For Interval Censored Data, Suvra Pal, Y Peng, S Barui, P Wang Aug 2022

A Support Vector Machine Based Cure Rate Model For Interval Censored Data, Suvra Pal, Y Peng, S Barui, P Wang

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

The mixture cure rate model is the most commonly used cure rate model in the literature. In the context of mixture cure rate model, the standard approach to model the effect of covariates on the cured or uncured probability is to use a logistic function. This readily implies that the boundary classifying the cured and uncured subjects is linear. In this paper, we propose a new mixture cure rate model based on interval censored data that uses the support vector machine (SVM) to model the effect of covariates on the uncured or the cured probability (i.e., on the incidence part …

Shimba Hills is a wildlife area in Kenya and a major focus of tsetse-borne trypanosomes in East Africa. In Shimba Hills, tsetse-borne trypanosomes constrain animal health and smallholder livelihoods. However, epidemiological data to guide hotspot-targeted control of infections are limited. This study assessed the dynamics of tsetse-borne trypanosome risk in Shimba Hills with the objective to describe infection hotspots for targeted control. Tsetse flies (n = 696) collected in field surveys between November 2018 and September 2019 in Shimba Hills were characterized for chronological age and phenotypic sizes and screened for trypanosome and cattle DNA. Entomological inoculation rates for trypanosome …

Macro Barriers To Business And Innovation In Developing Economies: Evidence From Egyptian, Moroccan, And Tunisian Smes, Nizar Becheikh, Mohammed Bouaddi Aug 2022

Macro Barriers To Business And Innovation In Developing Economies: Evidence From Egyptian, Moroccan, And Tunisian Smes, Nizar Becheikh, Mohammed Bouaddi

Faculty Journal Articles

Investing in knowledge and innovation is recognised as a key driver of economic growth in any country. This paper contributes to the thin literature on innovation determinants in developing economies by empirically examining the impact of macro-level obstacles to business on small and medium-sized enterprises’ innovations in three Arab countries, namely, Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia. While R&D emerged as the main factor that impacts positively and significantly the likelihood that firms innovate and succeed in producing a diverse set of product and process innovations, different combinations of other factors proved to affect innovation in each of the three countries.

Cambridge University Press Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Opinions have been divided regarding the relevance of the APA Ethics Code to non-mental health specialties and even whether the code should attempt to encompass all psychology specializations. However, these opinions have crystallized without the benefit of any appreciable empirical data, until now. This study investigates the applicability of the ethical principles and standards of the code to 398 first-person narratives of ethical incidents reported by industrial-organizational (I-O) psychologists. On average, 2.8 (of the 5) principles enumerated in the code were deemed applicable to each incident, and each principle was applicable to more than half the incidents provided. Of the …

How do rural communities in Missouri balance the potentially conflicting land use and economic planning needs between incoming and growing Amish populations and non-Amish populations? This qualitative research addresses a gap in the literature by examining the growing Amish population in rural America through the lens of community planning. A comparative case study was conducted in three Amish communities in Missouri and included interviews with public officials who engage in planning and planning-related tasks and an Amish leader at each case site. This project finds that Amish growth and expansion is resulting in both community conflicts and collaborative efforts in …

The Fallacy And Verification Of Criticism On Contemporary Chinese Confessional Poetry, Lei Wei Aug 2022

The Fallacy And Verification Of Criticism On Contemporary Chinese Confessional Poetry, Lei Wei

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Contemporary Chinese confessional poetry has engaged much academic attention despite its short existence between the 1980s and the 1990s. The confessional poetry has been related with female poetry by scholars since the beginning, and they have been criticized for lacking Chinese cultural characteristics, skills or aesthetic values etc.. However, contemporary Chinese confessional poetry is not exclusively the product of female poets, as there are quite a few male poets who created some fine confessional poems. Chinese confessional poetry of new period turned out to be embodied with a literary form of strong nationalistic features and contain rich elements of traditional …

Modna: Motif-Oriented Pre-Training For Dna Language Model, Weizhi An, Yuzhi Guo, Yatao Bian, Hehuan Ma, Jinyu Yang, Chunyuan Li, Junzhou Huang

Association of Computing Machinery Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Obtaining informative representations of gene expression is crucial in predicting various downstream regulatory-related tasks such as promoter prediction and transcription factor binding sites prediction. Nevertheless, current supervised learning with insufficient labeled genomes limits the generalization capability of training a robust predictive model. Recently researchers model DNA sequences by self-supervised training and transfer the pre-trained genome representations to various downstream tasks. Instead of directly shifting the mask language learning to DNA sequence learning, we incorporate prior knowledge into genome language modeling representations. We propose a novel Motif-oriented DNA (MoDNA) pre-training framework, which is designed self-supervised and can be fine-tuned for different …

Robust Self-Training Strategy For Various Molecular Biology Prediction Tasks∗, Hehuan Ma, Feng Jiang, Yu Rong, Yuzhi Guo, Junzhou Huang

Association of Computing Machinery Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Molecular biology prediction tasks suffer the limited labeled data problem since it normally demands a series of professional experiments to label the target molecule. Self-training is one of the semi-supervised learning paradigms that utilizes both labeled and unlabeled data. It trains a teacher model on labeled data, and uses it to generate pseudo labels for unlabeled data. The labeled and pseudo-labeled data are then combined to train a student model. However, the pseudo labels generated from the teacher model are not sufficiently accurate. Thus, we propose a robust self-training strategy by exploring robust loss function to handle such noisy labels, …
