The Institute of Urban Studies has in its first five years mounted a broad array of educational, research and service responses to the problems of communities in both metropolitan and rural areas. These initial efforts would not have been possible without the imagination and diligence of those who served with our initial research and service units, the urban affairs faculty, and more recently, our criminal justice faculty. What remains is the challenge of furthering the capability of our existing efforts and building in both the outreach and academic areas to respond to new needs in Texas communities.

The Food Habits And Feeding Behavior Of New World Coral Snakes, Harry Walter Greene

This thesis considers the food habits and feeding behavior of New World venomous coral snakes, with emphasis on Micrurus fulvius a species that is found in the southeastern United States and northern Mexico. Literature records and the stomach contents of preserved specimens demonstrate that M. fuIvius of all sizes are specialized tertiary consumers. In Texas, they feed mostly on several species of small, secretive colubrid snakes and on skinks of the genera Eumeces and Leiolopisma. Other kinds of lizards and the young of large colubrid and viperid snakes make up the remainder of their prey. Geographic and seasonal variations in …

The Colorado Plateau was one of the last areas in the United States to be developed economically. Before the 1880s it was virtually empty except for Indians. Today the vast scenic and energy resources of the area are under development, and projections for future development are frightening. Problems of land use management are directly related to the fragmented nature of landholdings. Present methods of consolidation are inadequate, and new approaches to the organization of space must be devised if further degradation of the environment is to be prevented.

Sixty uniformly distributed stands in adjacent areas, 40 in Virginia Park (virgin) and 20 in Chesler Park (grazed), were analyzed. Cryptogamic and vascular species were recorded; cover was analyzed by the point sampling method, and frequency by means of 25 quadrats (each 0.125 m^2) per stand. The prevalent species (26 in Virginia, 23 in Chesler) were selected on the basis of a constancy-times-frequency index. Interspecific association patterns were determined by means of simple procedures based on quadrat frequency values for each species in the individual stands.
