This dataset contains marine benthic invertebrate data obtained aboard R/V Weatherbird II (WB0517) from 2017-05-13 to 2017-05-23 on the northwest insular slope of Cuba. Nine sites were sampled using a multi-corer between 1000 and 1670 m depth off the northwest insular slope of Cuba. Benthic marine invertebrates were extracted from sediments and identified to the family level.

Prejudice is a pre-conceived depiction of an entity within a person's mind. It tends to devalue people as a consequence of their perceived membership in a social group. The origin of prejudice can be traced back to the categorization process people use to form a plausible perception of their surroundings. The process of constructing these perceptions generally results in prejudices, which authorizes inequalities to develop across a variety of social groups. In all their forms, biases can be relayed in language by generalizing a negative adjective onto an social group as a function of prejudgement. Using this reduced linguistic formulation, …

The authors present the third example of an eccrine ductal carcinoma of the eyelid. A woman in her early 70s presented with a lesion of the central right lower eyelid margin in the vicinity where an actinic keratosis was diagnosed by biopsy 2.75 years previously. Her dermatologist and ophthalmologist monitored the area of actinic keratosis, and it was stable for 2.5 years until the area became ulcerated and thickened with the loss of eyelashes. A wedge resection disclosed a squamous cell carcinoma in situ and a separate eccrine ductal carcinoma. The eccrine ductal carcinoma had in situ tumor thickening, an …

Studies over the past few years have identified multiple novel molecular targets and pathways that metformin acts on to exert its beneficial effects in treating type 2 diabetes as well as other disorders involving dysregulated inflammation and redox homeostasis. In this mini-review, we discuss the latest cutting-edge research discoveries on novel molecular targets of metformin in glycemic control, cardiovascular protection, cancer intervention, anti-inflammation, antiaging, and weight control. Charcoal rot caused by the fungal pathogen Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid is one of various devastating soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) diseases, which can severely reduce crop yield. The investigation into the genetic potential for charcoal rot resistance of wild soybean (Glycine soja) accessions will enrich our understanding of the impact of soybean domestication on disease resistance; moreover, the identified charcoal rot-resistant lines can be used to improve soybean resistance to charcoal rot. This dataset provides the geographical locations of karst groundwater basins, groundwater flowpaths, and dye injection/recovery points in Kentucky. Dye tracing is a common method used for understanding groundwater movement. Dye is poured (or injected) into a sinking stream, well, sinkhole, or body of water, where it is carried down-gradient by flowing water. The locations at which dye is recovered (typically at artesian springs) indicates a connection from injection to recovery site. This connection is refered to as a groundwater flowpath. Conducting multiple dye traces across an area allows for the interpretation of regional groundwater flow by assessing where flowpaths either …

As a career cello pedagogue and as a certified dyslexia instructor, I have been sought out by many string teachers for insights into how to help their students who struggle with music reading. Over time, I observed that this was a hidden problem without a research-based solution. To investigate further, I invited a self-selected cohort of string teachers to fill out a survey concerning music reading difficulties in their classrooms or studios. The dynamics of aqueous processes within the Eos Chasma region in the trough of Valles Marineris on Mars have been attributed to a variety of Hesperian-aged landforms. We aim to improve the understanding of the geological characteristics of the western part of the Eos Chaos by investigating the morphological, topographical, and thermo-physical characteristics of the western semi-circular segment of Valles Marineris. The western Eos Chaos is characterized by remnants of an elevated crater rim, a central peak, and a circular boundary. Based on these observations, we infer that the study area is an ancient, highly degraded impact crater. Our observations …

From 1929 until 1972, the Alberta Eugenics Board (the Board) recommended that 4,739 individuals be sterilized. The original 1928 act that legalized eugenic sterilization stipulated that the surgery itself required the consent of the individual or their caregiver; however, in 1937, the Alberta government removed the consent requirement for such cases where the Board determined individual patients to be “mental defectives.” By analyzing published reports, case histories, medical journals, and primary sources from the Board, we situate the concept of “mental defective” in a historical context to clarify the Board’s diagnostic process. Marine protected areas (MPAs) aim to protect habitats and ecosystems to promote the diversity and health of marine populations. To evaluate the health of fish populations within and outside of MPAs in Southern California, we used flight initiation distance (FID). FID is the distance at which an individual will flee from a perceived predator and is a direct measure of boldness. Lower FIDs are indicative of bolder populations. Lower FID values indicate that fish will have the opportunity to dedicate less energy to fleeing from predators which could then be used for increased foraging. This dataset came from the research paper "Sustainably engaging student personal development in a distracting digital world through experiential goal setting and weekly goal tracking" coauthored by the researchers. The project examines the effects of student weekly goal tracking reports on student goal achievement. It also examines the effect of SMART goal elements and if the goal is sustainability focused. It controls for student biological sex and for student work team drama. Using student goal achievement (0/1) as the dependent variable, the authors apply binary logistic regression analysis to the data.
