Oviposition, Larval Arrest And Establishment Of Chilo Partellus (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) On Maize Genotypes During Anthesis, Harish Kumar
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
The oviposition, larval arrest and establishment by the stem borer Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) were measured on different maize genotypes during anthesis. The maize genotypes tested were: Inbred A (Susceptible), Mp 704, MBR-8637, MBR-8650, MBR-8668, Poza Rica 7832, ER-29 SVR, Katumani Composite B, MMV 400, Bulk CG 4141, and ICZ2-CM. The moths oviposited on the middle leaves of the plant and the neonate larvae moved to leaf sheaths and ear husks to feed (arrest). As they grew older, the larvae invaded the stem, ear shanks and tassel to complete feeding (establishment) and to pupate. The response of the stem borer differed …

Seasonal changes in the distribution of the tsetse flies, Glossina pallidipes Austen and G. longipennis Corti, along a transect from riverine thickets out into open plains were monitored along with tsetse density, climatic factors, vegetation and host abundance. Dispersal of tsetse into open country was quantified using the mean spread. During and after the rains both species extended their distribution out into open country up to at least 3.5 km from riverine thicket areas. The mean spread of G. longipennis was greater than that of G. pallidipes. The spread of males and females was very similar, as was the spread …

Trypanosome Infection Rates In Tsetse Flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) And Cattle During Tsetse Control Operations In The Kagera River Region Of Rwanda, Steve Mihok, Leonard H. Otieno, Christopher S. Tarimo
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Trypanosome infections were monitored in three species of tsetse fly (Glossina pallidipes Austen, G. morsitans centralis Machado, and G. brevipalpis News-tead) at four locations in the Kagera River region of Rwanda from May 1989 to September 1990. Two of the four areas (Mpanga Ranch and Bukora Ranch) were subjected to tsetse fly suppression operations with odour-baited traps. Proboscis infections of the Trypanosoma congolense and T. vivax types accounted for roughly equal numbers of the 207 mature infections detected (3.8%). Variation in infection rates was area-specific rather than tsetse species-specific. Order of magnitude differences in tsetse fly densities among areas were …

Cambial Electrical Resistance Does Not Assess Vitality Of Individual Sweetgum Trees, James R. Clark, Roger Kjelgren, J. Hushagen, J. Fiore
Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications
Cambial electrical resistance (CER) was assessed over a year-long period, using the Shigometer, for 109 sweetgum trees (Liquidambarstyraciflua) planted along streets in Seattle, Washington. CER decreased through the spring, reached a minimum in summer, increased through the fall and was maximal in mid-winter. The seasonal maximum was 200-600% greater than the summer minimum. CER measurements could not be related to growth parameters such as seasonal shoot increment and diameter growth.

Recombinant Kinetoplast Dna (Kdna) Probe For Identifying Leishmania Tropica, N. N. Massamba, M. J. Mutinga
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
The paper reports on the construction of a kDNA library with DNA isolated from the WHO reference strain of Leishmania tropica IC-305 and subsequent identification and propagation of recombinant plasmids containing L. tropica kDNA sequences. It also shows that the cloned kDNA sequences can be used as genetic markers in restriction endonuclease, Southern blot transfer, and dot blot hybridisation analysis, to identify L. tropica parasites. When the pL 305-I kDNA probe was used in hybridisation experiments with DNAs from various Leishmania reference strains, species and isolates from different host species and from different geographical locations, hybridisation was detected only with …

Characterization Of Aspartic Proteinases From The Gut Of The Tick, Rhipicephalus Appendiculatus Neuman, Waha R.M. Vundla, Michel Brossard, David J. Pearson, Victor L. Labongo
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Two proteinases designated 1 and 2, purified from the gut of partially engorged female, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus have been characterized. Both proteinases hydrolysed denatured haemoglobin (Hb) at acid pH, with Michaelis constants (KM) of 1.19 g/100 ml (proteinase 1) and 0.71 g/100 ml (proteinase 2). Pepstatin competitively inhibited both proteinases, with a K1 of 1.7 nM (proteinase 2). Both proteinases were also inhibited by 1 mM phenylmethylsulphonyl fluoride (PMSF). The pH optimum for proteinase 1 was 3.0, with a smaller but distinct second peak at pH 4.6. For proteinase 2, peak activity was at pH 2.6 with a second smaller peak …

Field Evaluation Of Tilapia Zilli (Gervais) As A Biological Control Agent For Mosquito Control, E. J. Asimeng, M. J. Mutinga
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Tilapia zilli (Gervais), a larvivorous fish identified in the Mwea Rice Irrigation System (Kenya), was evaluated in the field to assess its potential for biological control of mosquito larvae. The study was conducted from October 1991 to April 1992 in experimental ponds constructed at Mbui-Njeru, which is one of the 36 villages in the irrigation scheme. T. zilli was found to be extremely effective in controlling mosquito breeding that persisted throughout the study period. However, the presence of vegetation and turbidity significantly reduced its efficiency in predation. The negative effects of vegetation could be averted by combining T. zilli with …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Mating behavior of Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood males, inoculated with the DNA virus during the third-instar larval stage, and sexual receptivity of females premated with such males were studied in the laboratory. Like normal males, the virus-infected males readily located females and mounted them instantaneously. The mean duration of copulation was similar in both normal and infected groups, and all males in both groups experienced the final jerking phase before separating. The value for the degree of insemination (mean spermathecal value) for the females mated with normal males was significantly greater than that for the flies mated with the virus-infected …

An in vitro system for studying the transformation of bloodstream forms of Trypanosoma brucei brucei into procylic (midgut) forms is described. In this system, transformation of the parasites was stimulated by Glossina morsitans morsitans midgut homogenates at 27° C but not at 4° C. The transformation-stimulating capacity was irreversibly destroyed by heating the midgut homogenates at 60° C for 1 h. A correlation was established between the transformation activity of the midgut homogenates and trypsin activity. The protease inhibitors (soybean trypsin inhibitor and N-p-tosyl-l-lysine-chloromethyl-ketone) inhibited trypsin activity and completely blocked the transformation of the parasites. Furthermore, the midgut homogenates could …

Influence Of Exposure Period And Management Methods On The Effectiveness Of Chickens As Predators Of Ticks Infesting Cattle, S. M. Hassan, O. O. Dipeolu, D. M. Munyinyi
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Experiments undertaken on Rusinga Island, Kenya, indicated that Rhipicephalus appendiculatus (Neumann) was the predominant tick consumed on tick-infested cattle by chickens, followed by Amblyomma variegatum (Fabricius), Boophilus decoloratus (Koch) and Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi (Neumann). The number of ticks consumed by chickens released with cattle in a 3 h release period was not significantly different from ticks consumed in a 4 h release period. In a free management system, chickens 1-3 months of age consumed more ticks than older ones; in a confined management system however, chickens 4-6 months of age consumed more ticks than younger birds. Although the numbers of …

Teneral Glossina morsitans centralis, G. m. morsitans and G. pallidipes were infected with three different clones of Trypanosoma brucei in blood containing d(+)-glucosamine, an inhibitor of tsetse midgut lectin. On average, 5 days of d(+)-glucosamine treatment tripled infection rates, without affecting the proportion of infections that matured. Total infection rates were equal in males and females, but twice as many infections matured in males. Counts of parasites in the guts and salivary glands of 277 flies revealed order of magnitude differences among flies, with females consistently having 2-3-times as many parasites as males. Parasite numbers varied in a sex-specific manner …

Groups of Friesian cattle were infested repetedly with Rhipicephalus appendiculatus at weekly intervals (eight infestations) and at intervals of 3 weeks (seven infestations) and 6 weeks (seven infestations). The engorgement weight of adults, nymphs and larvae decreased significantly initially, from the second infestation, but rose significantly at later infestations. This rise was more dramatic with larval instars than with any other. A new method for quantifying the resistance status of animals was introduced; this method showed that the resistance acquired by cattle during 6-weekly reinfestations was more stable than that acquired by cattle during weekly and 3-weekly reinfestations. The criteria …

A shrubby plant, abundant in east Kenya, Gynandropsis gynandra (L.) Brig., was shown to exhibit repellent and acaricidal properties to larvae, nymphs and adult Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Amblyomma variegatum ticks. All stages of ticks avoided the leaves of the plant and a high percentage of the ticks which were continuously exposed to its leaves died; surviving ticks were weak and inactive but regained activity when exposed to fresh air. The effectiveness of the plant's leaves as a repellent and acaricide was most pronounced on nymphs and least pronounced on adults. Field investigations indicated that ticks were not found up to …

Field studies were conducted to assess the effects of intercropping common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) with maize (Zea mays L.), at two growth stages and four row spacings (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 m), on Aphis fabae infestation of beans and on the magnitudes of bean yield losses due to aphid attack and to competition by maize. The first maize planting (Old maize) was carried out 3 weeks earlier than beans, while the second planting (Young maize) was done simultaneously with beans. Significantly (P < 0.05) fewer plants were infested by A. fabae when beans were intercropped with older or densely planted maize. Aphid colonies on beans were also smaller, and there was reduced aphid damage to beans in the intercrops. However, whereas bean yield loss from aphid attack was less than 3.5% in all intercrop situations, yield loss from competition by maize was very high, being up to 98% when beans were intercropped with early-planted maize at 0.5-m row spacing. Yields of intercropped maize planted at row spacings of 0.5, 1.5 and 2.0 m were also depressed. The results show that both maize growth and row spacing could be exploited for the control of A. fabae on intercropped beans. However, adequate consideration must be given to the negative effects of maize planting density and growth on yields of both crops. © 1992.

Boran cattle were immunized with a semi-purified fraction (F2) of solubilized membrane-bound antigens extracted from the midgut of the tick Rhipicephalus appendiculatus. A subsequent challenge with all stages of R. appendiculatus showed protection of the cattle to a significant degree. There was a decrease in engorgement weight of ticks, the number which fed above critical engorgement weight was considerably reduced, and about 38% of the larvae which fed to repletion did not moult. The major cause of death of adult female ticks was the increased grooming by cattle as a result of increased dermal irritation. © 1991 Elsevier Science Publishers …

In experiments done over a period of 1 1/2 years using engorged female Rhipicephalus appendiculatus tethered in a grass plot, 42% predation was observed in long grass (40-60 cm), and 36% in short grass (6-10 cm). Deaths due to environmental factors were 4.8% and 6.8% in long and short grass, respectively. Six groups of animals were confirmed to be predators of the ticks, namely: ants, spiders, rodents, birds, lizards and shrews. The implications of these results in making tick population models, and the possibility of using predators in integrated tick-control packages are discussed. © 1991 Elsevier Science Publishers B.V.

Half-body tick collections and visual assessment of tick burdens were performed monthly over six months on 100 bulls at the Kenya National Boran Stud, Mutara Ranch, Kenya. Boophilus decoloratus predominated among several tick species infesting the animals. Burdens of B. decoloratus and total tick burdens were highly correlated. Rankings of relative tick resistance among bulls were consistent from month to month. Rankings based on visual assessment were very close to those based on actual tick burdens. Animals with thin skins appeared to carry fewer ticks, but tick burden bore no relationship to coat colour. The results suggest that simple visual …

Production in mature termite nests consists of a seasonal brood of reproductives and a continuous turnover of steriles. The sterile population of the nest remained fairly constant, with no regular seasonal fluctuations. Growth rates of steriles were estimated by interrupting the input and following the "missing cohort". Estimated mean values of standing crop biomass and annual production in a mature nest were used to calculate a production-to-biomass ratio. In conjunction with data on the density of nests in the field, the biomass and production per hectare were estimated. © 1991 Birkhäuser Verlag.

A hysteretic model for two-phase permeability (k)-saturation (S)-pressure (P) relations is outlined that accounts for effects of nonwetting fluid entrapment. The model can be employed in unsaturated fluid flow computer codes to predict temporal and spatial fluid distributions. Consideration is given to hysteresis in S-P relations caused by contact angle, irregular pore geometry, and nonwetting fluid entrapment effects and to hysteresis in k-Srelations caused by nonwetting fluid entrapment effects. An air-water flow experiment is conducted with a 72-cm vertical soil column where the water table is fluctuated to generate scanning S-P paths. Water contents are measured via a gamma radiation …

Economic and Financial Review
This paper has reviewed the structure of the financial sector in Africa articulated the problems and discussed the nature of reforms adopted to overcome them. The overview shows that commercial and merchant banks and specialised lending institutions are key .financial intermediaries in Africa. including stock exchanges and.finance houses. However, the development of the institutions varies from country to country, depending on the dynamism of central banks and sophistication of economic agents. Although the financial sector in Africa has recorded notable progress, it has nonetheless been afflicted with a number of problems. The problems have arisen mainly from inhibitive policy environment, …

Assessing The Effectiveness Of The Change To Technology Teacher Education, Dan L. Householder, Richard A. Boser
Engineering Education Faculty Publications
Many institutions which formerly pre-pared teachers of industrial arts are currently implementing technology teacher education programs. As these institutions change to implement technology teacher education, it is important to obtain an accurate assessment of the effectiveness of the innovation. Change in the teacher education curriculum may be assessed in a number of possible ways, each with several potential advantages. However, there is no generally accepted model for assessing the overall effectiveness of such a major change in technology teacher education. To address this problem, a study was undertaken to develop and verify a set of measures that could be used …
