Until recently, conversation, considered even now by some to be outside the scope of linguistics, has been neglected in linguistic research. Chapter One of this dissertation argues that the popular distinction between 'theories of language structure' and 'theories of language use' might be abandoned in order to allow a more integrated study of language and a clearer understanding of the nature of language in the context of human life. To forward such an integrated study, a theoretical model on which to base the analysis of both conversation structure and other linguistic structures must be developed. Design work from the 1999 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Abandoibarra. John Martin Oury. The Bilbao project is a composite of housing, commercial, provincial and municipal offices, library, hotel, commercial space and parking which interfaces with the city and the river. The grid of the city is respected with street vistas that continue between the swirling forms, which are inspired by Serra's torqued ellipses. Intensity of the swirling shapes increases near the Guggenheim Museum and decreases in response to the straight lines of the Euskalduna Concert Hall. Government offices are located …

The concept of communication is a fundamental notion in the metatheory of linguistics. This study explores the historical development and influence of a particular model of communication, labeled the ‘code model’. This model characterizes communication as a process wherein a source (encoder) conveys a message to a receiver (decoder) through the transmission of a signal. Communication is considered successful if the message received is the same as that sent. This study reviews use of the code model in various linguistic publications, analyzing the code model as a conceptual metaphor and arguing that it structures the way linguists think about communication …

In order to address the question of whether or not to abandon Han characters (Hanji), it is important to evaluate empirically the efficiency of Han writing. The purpose of this study is to compare the efficiency of learning to read and write in Hanji versus learning to read and write in phonemic writing systems, such as Vietnamese Chu Quoc Ngu (CQN) or Mandarin Bopomo. Social interaction in the language classroom has been said to contribute to the acquisition of oral proficiency in a target language by presumably facilitating comprehension and learner production through negotiation of meaning. Since a great portion of interaction is initiated by teacher questions, numerous studies on questions have been conducted. The majority of these studies, however, fail to provide adequate explanations for the conditions or environments which result in successful or unsuccessful elicitation. Simulation Model For Maize Crop Growth Based On Acquisition And Allocation Processes For Carbohydrate And Nitrogen, O. Bonato, F. Schulthess, J. Baumgärtner

A population model for maize growth and development driven by temperature, solar radiation, soil water and soil nitrogen is presented. A time-varying distributed delay model is used to describe the dynamics of the attributes number, biomass and nitrogen belonging to leaf, root, stem, grain, rachys and husk populations. Photosynthate production as well as water and nitrogen acquisition was simulated with a demand-driven ratio-dependent functional response model. Carbohydrate, water and nitrogen supply-demand ratios were calculated to control the growth of different populations of plant. The metabolic pool model was used to allocate carbohydrates to plant subunits. The model was validated with …

The virulence of 8 isolates of entomopathogenic hyphomycetes against adult and 5th instar nymph of Clavigralla tomentosicollis was evaluated in the laboratory at 4 different concentrations of inoculum. At all concentrations, Beauveria bassiana CPD 9 and Metarhizium anisopliae CPD 5 caused the highest mortality in adult bug ranging from 58 to 97% and 53 to 100%, respectively at 7 days post inoculation. The same isolates had the shortest LT50 (3.5 and 4.1 days, respectively) and the lowest LC50 (1.8 × 105 and 9.8 × 104 conidia ml-1) values in adult insects. Discovery of the ostertagiine nematode Teladorsagia boreoarcticus n. sp. in muskoxen, Ovibos moschatus, from the central Canadian Arctic highlights the paucity of knowledge about the genealogical and numerical diversity of nematode faunas characteristic of artiodactyls at high latitudes across the Holarctic. Teladorsagia boreoarcticus is a dimorphic cryptic species distinguished from Teladorsagia circumcincta/Teladorsagia trifurcata in domestic sheep by a 13% divergence in the ND4 region of mitochondrial DNA, constant differences in the synlophe, and significantly longer esophageal valve, spicules, gubernaculum, and bursa. Teladorsagia boreoarcticus represents an archaic component of the North American fauna and may have a Holarctic distribution in muskoxen …

The interaction between the African malaria vector Anopheles gambiae and its human host has traditionally been viewed within a bitrophic context, considering only the human and the mosquito. Recently, the influence of the Plasmodium parasite on the interaction has been recognized, because it affects the physiology and/or behaviour of humans and mosquitoes. However, studies on odour-mediated host-seeking behaviour of An. gambiae and other Diptera have provided evidence that a fourth group of organisms should be taken into consideration. Human skin microflora play a role in the production of odorous compounds that might function as kairomones for mosquitoes. Here, Marieta Braks, …

The repellency of the essential oil of the shrub Cleome hirta and of three identified constituents (phytol, (+)-cedrol, n-octacosane) was evaluated against the livestock tick, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and the maize weevil, Sitophillus zeamais. In a tick climbing repellency bioassay, the oil exhibited repellency which, at the highest dose, was comparable to that of the commercial arthropod repellent N,N-diethyltoluamide (DEET). In a Y-tube olfactometer bioassay, the oil showed higher or comparable repellency against S. zeamais relative to DEET at all the doses tested. Freshly deposited third instar Glossina morsitans centralis larvae were infected with the tsetse DNA virus by microinjection, and at emergence adult males were separated from the females and fed on rabbit blood every second day for 8 days. A control group treated with sterile saline were handled similarly. They were dissected, and comparative observations made on the appearance and size of the accessory reproductive glands (ARG) in infected and control males. Regularly fed 8-day-old males from infected and control groups were mated to 2-day-old normal females obtained from the insectay. After separation from copula, the females were dissected and the …

Does Communicating Nonverbal Disagreement During An Opponent's Speech Affect The Credibility Of The Debater In The Background?, John S. Seiter

Compared to televised debates using a single-screen format, those using a split screen presenting both debaters simultaneously show viewers the nonverbal reactions of a debater's opponent. This study examined the effect of such nonverbal reactions on viewers' ratings of the nonverbal communicator's credibility. students watched one of four versions of a televised debate. One version used a single-screen format, showing only the speaker, while the other three versions used a split-screen format in which the speaker's opponent displayed constant, occasional, or no nonverbal disagreement with the speaker.
