Abutilon theophrasti (Malvaceae) is a troublesome annual weed in many maize and soybean cropping systems of Canada and the United States. Seeds of A. theophrasti exhibit physical dormancy. Differences in the growing environment of parent plants may influence the germinability of seeds and vigour of seedlings produced by this species because of variation in resource allocation to seed development. Thus, the germinability of seeds and subsequent seedling vigour were examined for A. theophrasti plants grown in monoculture at a density of 4.2 plants m -2 under varying natural photoperiods in central New York State. Root bark extracts of five Meliaceae species (Turraea abyssinica Hochst., Turraea wakefeldii Oliv., Turraea mombassana Hiern ex C.DC., Trichilia roka (Forsk) Chiov. and Melia volkensii Guerke.) and different fractions thereof (following chloroform extraction and column chromatographic separation) were compared for their immediate toxicity and long-term effects on Anopheles gambiae Giles sensu stricto (Diptera: Culicidae). Larvicidal effects of the extracts appeared to be largely associated with limonoids of medium polarity with M. volkensii and T. mombassana extracts being more potent than those of the other Meliaceae. A study was conducted at Mtwapa in the northern coastal area of Kenya during the long and short rainy seasons of 1999 and 2000 to assess the benefits of agroecosystem diversification-through agroforestry and intercropping-on the activity of natural enemies of maize stemborers. Treatments consisted of maize and cowpea intercrops or maize monocrops planted within hedgerows of Leucaena leucocephala and Gliricidia sepium. The plots were mulched or unmulched and insecticide-treated or not. The maize stemborers encountered, in order of abundance, were Chilo partellus, Chilo orichalcociliellus and Sesamia calamistis. I quantified brook trout diet, growth, and consumption in the upper Shavers Fork watershed from May 2002--October 2003. Seven study sites were selected to represent small tributary, large tributary, and mainstem habitats within the watershed. The objectives of the study were to determine if diet, growth, and consumption in brook trout were dependent on fish size, season, and location within the watershed. Fish diets were sampled and categorized into six prey type groups to determine variability in prey composition and diet mass. An inventory and analysis of culverts as vertebrate migration barriers has been completed in a relatively pristine portion of the Upper Cheat River basin, Randolph and Tucker counties, West Virginia. Investigators in four different disciplines contributed to the project, including the geomorphological research represented by this thesis. This project had an underlying purpose to assess the potential for stream mitigation credits through a possible future stream mitigation banking program.;Several conditions appear correlated with problem culvert sites. As landscape water conservation becomes more important in the American West, pubic interest in using low water-use turfgrasses is increasing. Little is known about soil water extraction characteristics that contribute to low water use. We investigated how buffalograss (Buchloë dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm) and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), considered to be low and high water-use species, respectively, extract soil water in terms of rooting depth and use of available water. Leaf canopy temperature, air temperature, and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) were measured, and a relationship developed between leaf canopy temperature minus air temperature (TL-TA) and VPD for each species under …

Objective: Assess the perception of stress amongst medical students and their coping strategies. Methodology/Study Design: A cross sectional study using a semi-structured self administered questionnaire was carried out over four weeks, using a small sample of students of all categories and classes of a medical college.
Results: A total of 264 students out of 300 (88%) filled in the questionnaire. Inability to cope, helplessness, increased psychological pressure, mental tension and too much workload are 'stress factors' for students. A considerable majority (> 90%) think that they have been stressed at one time or another. Ninety-four per cent of males have …

This is the first report on the nocturnal flight activity of the phlebotomine sandflies in the field by trap collection in Mukusu, Masinga, the kala-azar (visceral leishmaniasis in humans) area in Kenya. A total of 514 sandflies were collected with three different types of traps (sticky traps, CDC light traps and a goat-baited trap), and seven species of two genera (Sergentomyia and Phlebotomus) were identified. The number of Sergentomyia bedfordi Newstead individuals captured was the largest among these seven species. This suggests that S. bedfordi is the most common among the seven species in Mukusu. This Article addresses the removal and preemption provisions of the Securities Litigation Uniform Standards Act of 1998 (“SLUSA”). In SLUSA, Congress preempted class actions alleging “an untrue statement or omission of a material fact in connection with the purchase or sale of a covered security.” SLUSA clearly applies to preempt the typical state securities fraud action, forcing plaintiffs into federal court where they will be subject to the rigorous procedural requirements of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995. Preemption of false corporate publicity cases was expected and, in fact, intended by SLUSA. However, many courts have also extended …

The braconid larval parasitoid, Cotesia flavipes, is used as a biological control agent against the crambid Chilo partellus, a serious pest of cereal crops in eastern and southern Africa. We examined the survival, development parameters, and body growth patterns of the host and its parasitoid at different temperatures (22, 26, and 30°C) using third and fourth instars of Ch. partellus. For non-parasitized hosts, larval mortality tended to be highest at lowest temperature and for parasitized at third host instars only at highest temperature. Development time of Co. flavipes immatures significantly decreased with host instar and with temperature. Sex ratio of …

Five mosquito repellents have been identified from the essential oils of 6 plants growing in Kenya. These include (S)-(-)-cis-perillyl alcohol, (S)-(-)-cis-verbenol, (S)-(-)-cis-carveol, (S)-(-)-perillaldehyde, caryophyllene oxide and (S)-(-)-cis-perillyl alcohol. (S)-(-)-cis-perillyl alcohol and (S)-(-)-cis-verbenol were the most potent. Essential oils of six plants growing in Kenya were screened for repellent activities against Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto. The oils of Conyza newii (Compositeae) and Plectranthus marrubioides (Labiateae) were the most repellent (RD 50 = 8.9 × 10 -5 mg cm -2, 95% CI) followed by Lippia javanica (Verbenaceae), Lippia ukambensis (Verbenaceae), Tetradenia riparia, (Iboza multiflora) (Labiateae) and Tarchonanthus camphoratus (Compositeae). The effect of microhabitat temperature variation on the early development of Plasmodium falciparum in experimentally infected Anopheles gambiae s.s. (Diptera: Culicidae) was studied. Batches of mosquitoes were fed artificially on gametocyteamic blood obtained from human volunteers and then held in five environmental conditions described as: (1) incubator maintained at constant temperature of 28 ± 1°C as control; (2) temperature unregulated laboratory environment; (3) screen house; (4) grass thatched mud house and (5) corrugated iron roofed mud house. Aberrant arachidonic acid metabolism is involved in the inflammatory and carcinogenic processes. In this study, we investigated the effects of curcumin, a naturally occurring chemopreventive agent, and related β-diketone derivatives on the release of arachidonic acid and its metabolites in the murine macrophage RAW264.7 cells and in HT-29 human colon cancer cells. We also examined their effects on the catalytic activities and protein levels of related enzymes: cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2), cyclooxygenases (COX) as well as 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX). At 10 μM, dibenzoylmethane (DBM), trimethoxydibenzoylmethane (TDM), tetrahydrocurcumin (THC) and curcumin effectively inhibited the release of arachidonic acid and its metabolites in …

The survival of female Anopheles gambiae s.s. mosquitoes inside two village house types (grass-thatched and iron-roofed) was studied in relation to diet and ambient indoor microclimatic conditions. Two batches of 20-30, 1-day-old laboratory-bred mosquitoes were maintained inside cages in the grass-thatched (n = 2) and iron-roofed (n = 2) houses and fed daily, one group on 10% glucose and the other on human blood. Throughout the experiments, indoor temperature and relative humidity of the houses were recorded, and mortality of mosquitoes monitored daily until all had died.
