Storage Of Sunflower-Seeds: Variation On The Wax Content Of The Oil, Silvana Martini, Maria Cristina Anon

Storage conditions of oil seeds before industrial extraction might influence the quality of the crude oil. The objective of this work was to study the influence of sunflower seed storage conditions (temperature and time) on the quality of the resulting oil in terms of its wax content and composition. Sunflower seeds were stored under different conditions, 10, 21 and 37 °C, in sealed recipients. Extractions of the seeds with hexane were made to obtain the oil at different storage times. The amount of oil extracted (25–40%) showed no significant differences with storage conditions. Wax content of the samples was determined …

Background: Mosquitoes sampling is an important component in malaria control. However, most of the methods used have several shortcomings and hence there is a need to develop and calibrate new methods. The Mbita trap for capturing host-seeking mosquitoes was recently developed and successfully tested in Kenya. However, the Mbita trap is less effective at catching outdoor-biting Anopheles funestus and Anopheles arabiensis in Madagascar and, thus, there is need to further evaluate this trap in diverse epidemiological settings. This study reports a field evaluation of the Mbita trap in a rice irrigation scheme in Kenya. Methods: The mosquito sampling efficiency of …

Background: Most studies on the resistance of mosquitoes to their malaria parasites focus on the response of a mosquito line or colony against a single parasite genotype. In natural situations, however, it may be expected that mosquito-malaria relationships are based, as are many other host-parasite systems, on host genotype by parasite genotype interactions. In such systems, certain hosts are resistant to one subset of the parasite's genotypes, while other hosts are resistant to a different subset. Audience Perceptions Of Candidates’ Appropriateness As A Function Of Nonverbal Behaviors Displayed During Televised Political Debates, John S. Seiter, Harry Weger Jr.

Compared to televised debates using a single-screen format, such debates using a split screen presenting both debaters simultaneously show viewers the nonverbal reactions of each debater's opponent. The authors examined how appropriate or inappropriate such nonverbal behaviors are perceived to be. Students watched one of four versions of a televised debate. One version used a single-screen format, showing only the speaker, whereas the other three versions used a split-screen format in which the speaker's opponent displayed constant, occasional, or no nonverbal disagreement with the speaker. Students then rated the debaters' appropriateness. Analysis indicated that the opponent was perceived to be …

A goal of this paper is to introduce ethnography to the Japanese audience as research methodology for international business studies. Ethnography is defined as the study of describing a culture of a group of people. In the United States, ethnography has been established as one of the research methods in organizational studies. This does not apply to Japan, however. Thus, the paper aims to fill the void and inform the Japanese audience about how ethnography can contribute extending our understanding of the complexity of international cross-cultural management. The known structure of the automorphism group of the extended binary quadratic-residue code of length 80 is used for the construction of 36 new extremal doubly-even codes of length 88. The purpose of this study is to measure and compare calls for service at the apartment communities participating in the Crime Free Multi-Housing Program in the belief that a reduction in calls for service should translate to a reduction in crime. The review of the existing data is a cross-sectional, pre/post study of secondary data using calls for service. The significance of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the educational experience of African American students has been well documented. However, recent court decisions challenge these institutions' continued ability to folfill their historical missions. Therefore, it is more vital than ever to understand the unique role played by HBCUs in the African American community, particularly in the educational plans of students and their families. The current study analyzes interview and focus-group data with African American students, parents, and counselors at 20 southern California high schools. We present an experiment involving the Baeyer–Villiger oxidation reactionfor a first-year organic chemistry class. The Baeyer–Villiger reactionprovides an efficient method to convert ketones to esters or lactones. Most organictextbooks cover the Baeyer–Villiger reaction but owing to a lack of suitableexperiments, students seldom get to explore the reaction in the undergraduateteaching laboratory. In this experiment, m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid(m-CPBA) and4-tert-butylcyclohexanone are mixed together for 30 minutes under solvent-freeconditions to produce γ-t-butyl-ε-caprolactone in 95%yield. The solvent-free nature of this procedure greatly limits the quantityof waste generated by students and keeps costs low by removing the need for solvent.
