Viscoplastic Finite-Element Simulation To Predict The Solder Joint Fatigue Life Of Different Flash Memory Die Stacking Architectures, Yong Je Lee
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
This thesis focuses on the viscoplastic finite-element simulation to predict the solder joint fatigue life of different die stacking architectures for flash memory products. Four different stacked package architectures were evaluated as follows: pyramid, rotated, and spacer stacking, while interconnection (solder joint) was held constant. Number of dies for all four stacking configurations were varied from three, five and seven. To keep the package height constant, the die and die attach thickness were varied and the resulting effects on the stresses were investigated. A quarter and half symmetry model of stacked flash package are generated using ANSYS APDL script. The …

The Booster Network: A Framework For Analyzing State Policy Formation In An Era Of Resurgent Private Power, Patrick Embry
Public Affairs Theses - Archive
The continuing shift toward privatization has created new opportunities for private participation in transportation policy formation, infrastructure development, and service provision. The resulting high stakes have drawn a variety of traditionally powerful private players to overtly participate in Texas state policy making. Understanding policy formation in this era of resurgent private power is imperative because the outcomes will affect urban development, population distribution, and subsequent politics and policy. With this paper, I analyze Trans Texas Corridor policy formation using a new framework, the booster network. The framework is based in policy studies and urban development literatures, conceptualizes policy formation in …

Statistical Analysis Of Compressive Strength Of Clay Brick Masonry Prisms, Saman Afqahi Aryana
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
The Specification for Masonry Structures section of the current governing masonry design document in the U.S., reported by the Masonry Standards Joint Committee (MSJC), contains tables that can be used to determine the compressive strength of masonry, f'm, as a function of the mortar type and the compressive strength of the unit employed to construct the masonry. The majority of the data gathered to create the current values in the MSJC Specification were generated in studies done prior to 1970. There have been significant changes in materials and procedures since this time frame, and there is a need to gather …
Power And Distortion Optimized Video Coding For Pervasive Computing Applications, Yongfang Liang
Power And Distortion Optimized Video Coding For Pervasive Computing Applications, Yongfang Liang
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation investigates video encoding schemes for pervasive computing applications that must ensure low power consumption in addition to high compression efficiency. The contribution of the dissertation is the formulation of a theoretical problem that captures the joint optimization of power and distortion in video coding. The study of the complexity distribution of typical video encoders helps to develop a complexity-scalable video encoding architecture that includes several control parameters to adjust the power consumption of the major modules of the encoder. An analytic framework to model, control and optimize the power-rate-distortion is developed, which facilitates the development of optimization schemes …

Comparison Of The Ingestion And Digestion Rates Of Ochromonas Danica Grazing On Pseudomonas Fluorescens Of Varying Food Quality, Stephen Paul Shannon
Biology Dissertations - Archive
Flagellate prey selection appears to depend on morphological characteristics of prey such as cell size and motility, as well as on physiochemical characteristics such as digestibility and cell surface characteristics. Pseudomonas fluorescens was grown in chemostats at four dilution rates (0.03, 0.06, 0.10, 0.13 h-1) and three temperatures (14, 20, 28°C) to produce cells of varying morphological characteristics (cell size) and physiochemical characteristics or food quality (as determined by the C:N:P ratio). Heat-killed bacteria of a given food quality were prepared and used to grow the flagellate Ochromonas danica. Ingestion and digestion rates were determined using fluorescently labeled bacteria of …

New Developments Of The Deformation Method, Jie Liu
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
New developments of deformation method for grid generation are presented in this work. Theorems for three different cases and different methods for implementing deformation method are presented. One of the new developments is a 3D multi-block moving grid method. In this version, a Poisson equation is solved by finite difference method to get the vector field for moving grid. Special treatment applies to the common boundary of different blocks. Another new development is a numerical method for reconstructing a given differentiable transformations by solving a system of div-curl equation directly formed from each point of the graph. The determinacy and …

The survey interview has been recognized as the most frequently used data collection procedure in the social sciences (Dijkstra & van der Zouwen, l987). Although the survey interview is an essential methodological tool in social science research, it is fraught with problems of validity and reliability. Cognitive psychology offers a perspective to further explore the methodological facets of the survey interview. Research in the underlying cognitive processes involved in information processing over the past two decades has enhanced the understanding and utility of the survey interview in survey methodology (Tourangeau, Couper, & Conrad, 2004; Tourangeau, Rips, & Rasinski, 2000; Sudman, …

The Advantages Of Implementing Software Engineering Process Models, Ricky Don Preuninger
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization Science Committee had discussions on the topic concerned the state of Computer Science. There were worldwide issues with the development of software, the crisis being that software projects did not seem ever to complete. The study group coined the term "software engineering" to be provocative and implying need for software manufacturing to be similar to traditional branches of engineering. In the beginning, individual programmers used whatever means worked to build software. Formal methods of design or programming did not exist. Programmers were never able to give a definitive estimate as to how long a project …
Parallel Interference Cancellation Multiuser Detectors For Ds-Cdma Communication Systems, Feng Liu
Parallel Interference Cancellation Multiuser Detectors For Ds-Cdma Communication Systems, Feng Liu
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
A non-linear sub-optimal multiuser detector in the form of parallel interference cancellation (PIC) has been studied. The main objective of this thesis is to develop an analytical model for PIC performance analysis and propose new near-optimum approach. Since the exact performance analysis of PIC is difficult to derive due to its nonlinear decision function, previous work tends to adopt computer simulation method or evaluate through Gaussian approximation (GA) method. For PIC detector, the GA method may not apply since there may exist a dominate interference signal. In addition, the central limit theorem is not applicable to model the residual MAI …

A Performance Evaluation Of Alternate Numbering Based Xml Indexing Techniques, Chul Ho Ahn
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Since XML became a standard of representing semi-structured data and exchanging format over the web, the sheer volume of XML data has become larger. While relational database represents data as a structured format, XML represents data in a self-describing way as a hierarchical tree structure. For expediting query processing over XML, many different types of indexing techniques have emerged. We will focus on numbering-based indexing techniques in this thesis. We will present performance comparison according to different XPath queries among three distinct numbering based XML indexing named GENE (Generic numbering based), XISS (Range based numbering), and XACC (Dimension based numbering) …

Monitorexplorer: A State-Space Exploration Based Tool To Test Java Monitors Implementations, Vidur Gupta
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
A monitor is a concurrency construct that encapsulates data. There are many application classes which are written using the Java Monitors and these are difficult to test due to the inherent complexities of the concurrent programs. The key challenge is to be able to trace all possible execution paths and then able to reproduce them for regression testing. Our work explores the state-space of the monitor application. The state space is explored in the depth first fashion. At each state the next possible transition is executed. This process is repeated till a duplicate or invalid state is detected. The key …

Multi-Area Unit Commitment And Economic Dispatch With Market Operation Components, Chitra Yingvivatanapong
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Unit commitment and economic dispatch, when combined together, is a useful tool to find the most economical generation schedule with which demand and spinning reserve requirement are supplied and all generating unit constraints, such as unit ramp rates, unit minimum and maximum generation capabilities, and unit minimum up-time and down-time, are satisfied over a time horizon. For systems consisting of multiple areas, area import/export capabilities and tie line capacity constraints also need to be taken into account. Enhanced Lagrangian relaxation, unit decommitment and lambda-iteration methods are applied in this dissertation to determine the optimal unit commitment and economic dispatch schedule …

A Comparison Of The Violin Pedagogy Of Auer, Flesch, And Galamian: Improving Accessibility And Use Through Characterization And Indexing, Kelley M. Arney
Music Theses - Archive
The development of the index and characterization tools allows pedagogical texts to be used as resource texts. The common index allows any researcher to access applicable and significant information of a text quickly without destroying the continuity of the original text. The characterization charts aid the researcher in using the information in historical and philosophical ways. Thus, the index and characterizations of the Auer, Flesch, and Galamian texts gives string educators of advanced students (especially conservatory and university violin teachers) and performers access to three important pedagogical texts by an accessible, applicable, and scholarly approach.
A Spatial Analysis Of Stone Circles In Southwestern Ireland, David L. Flanagan
A Spatial Analysis Of Stone Circles In Southwestern Ireland, David L. Flanagan
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
There is a tendency for the stone circles of southwest Ireland to be categorized by archaeologists based on the number of stones used to define their circumferences. This categorization does not adequately describe the associations that exist between the size and location of stone circles and their elevation, nearest neighbor distance, nearest coastal distance and intervisibility. This research demonstrates that the area of a stone circle is often more closely associated with these variables than is the number of stones used to define their circumference. Intervisibility is shown to be a significant factor in the location of Five-stone circles. Five-stone …

Incorporating An Affective Component To A Cognitive Model Of Brand Switching Barriers, Michael Thomas Richarme
Marketing Dissertations - Archive
Customer retention is an important goal of business. It has been shown in a general model of brand switching that consumers utilize internal assessments of satisfaction and brand switching barriers to reach brand selection decisions. Satisfaction is a complex construct, and has been studied extensively for the past several decades. However, this construct only accounts for approximately a quarter of explained variance in the customer retention construct. Brand switching barriers have not been studied extensively, though they have recently been shown to account for up to 30 percent of variance in the same dependent construct. Thus, a better understanding of …

Numerical Study On Capillarity- Dominant Free Surface And Interfacial Flows, Zhaoyuan Wang
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
The continuum surface force (CSF) method has been extensively employed in the volume-of-fluid (VOF), level set (LS) and front tracking methods to model surface tension forces. Its ability is limited for the surface tension dominant free surface and interfacial flows due to the existence of spurious currents. These currents may lead to disastrous interface instabilities and failure of grid convergence, which are present in all the previous versions of the CSF algorithm. In this study, a coupled level set and volume-of-fluid method (CLSVOF) is employed for interface tracking, which offers more accurate computations of the curvature and the normal vector …

The water vapor permeability of fat barrier films has been associated with structural characteristics such as polymorphism, crystal size, and chemical composition, among others. However, no mechanistic models have been proposed to describe this relationship. In this study, we have determined the effects of processing conditions on the structure and physicochemical characteristics of four fats and their relationship to water vapor permeability. Results suggest that the solids' volume fraction and the domain size of the fat crystals seem to be the most important factors controlling water vapor migration. Moreover, materials with relatively large crystalline domains will yield malleable films with …
