Illegal Immigrants And Crime: A Perception Study Through The Lenses Of Majority And Minority Criminology/Criminal Justice Students, Robyn D'Amberly Rivera
Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive
The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions and attitudes of CRCJ majority (White/Caucasian) college students and minority (Black, Mexican American/Hispanic, American Indian, Asian/Pacific Islander or Other) towards illegal immigrants and crime in the United States. An administered survey was given to criminology/criminal justice university students that surveyed their perception and knowledge of illegal immigration and their impression on whether illegal immigration and crime are correlated. It is anticipated that the students' overall answers to the survey will show that they do not perceive that illegal immigration is related to crime in the United States.

Wireless Sensor Network Lifetime Analysis And Energy Efficient Techniques, Haining Shu
Wireless Sensor Network Lifetime Analysis And Energy Efficient Techniques, Haining Shu
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Wireless microsensor networks is one of the most important technologies for the 21st century. In distributed sensor networks energy-aware techniques are used to reduce energy consumption. Various sensor network applications have taken energy efficiency into consideration. This thesis report focuses on a new approach based on fuzzy logic systems to analyze the lifetime of a wireless sensor network. It demonstrates that a type-2 fuzzy membership function (MF), i.e., a Gaussian MF with uncertain standard deviation (std) is most appropriate to model a single node lifetime in wireless sensor networks. This research studies two basic sensor placement schemes: square-grid and hex-grid. …

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
Recent research results have shown that cognitive wireless networks (CWN) have the potential to alleviate spectrum scarcity problem resulting from current policies for radio resource allocation management and dramatically improve the overall performance of communication systems. Unlike conventional wireless networks, which lack the flexibility and adaptation in their operations, CWNs exploit cognitive radio technology which provides cognitive wireless devices with the ability to sense the situation, adapt to the environment and take appropriate actions correspondingly. There have been many challenges in building a fully functional CWN. New developments and approaches need to be proposed to allow radio users to share …

Cognitive Load And Classroom Teaching: The Double-Edged Sword Of Automaticity, David F. Feldon
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
Research in the development of teacher cognition and teaching performance in K–12 classrooms has identified consistent challenges and patterns of behavior that are congruent with the predictions of dual-process models of cognition. However, cognitive models of information processing are not often used to synthesize these results. This article reviews findings from the research on teaching and teacher education through the lens of a dual-process model and emphasizes the role that cognitive load plays in driving teaching performance. Data reflecting the salience of automaticity and its relationship with cognitive overload are highlighted, and implications for teacher preparation and inservice training strategies …

Quartic: An Ultra-Fast Time-Of-Flight Counter, Pedro Miguel Duarte
Physics Theses - Archive
Fast time-of-flight counters are planned to dramatically decrease backgrounds to events with a massive central system and forward/backward protons at the LHC. By using timing to confirm that the protons originated from the same vertex as the central system. QUARTIC's design uses an array of fused silica (quartz-like) bars aligned at an angle with respect to the beam. The protons pass through the bars and emit Cherenkov photons which are detected by a micro-channel plate photomultiplier tube at the end of the bars. In this work I present the results of the first stage of R&D efforts for the QUARTIC …

Race/Ethnicity And The Attitudes Of College Students Toward Women In Policing, Calvin Haba
Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive
The attitudes toward women in policing were compared among college students from the three racial/ethnic groups of African American, Hispanic, and White. Because of the limited literature available, this research explored Hispanic students' attitudes toward women in policing. With the influx of the Hispanic population within the United States, it is important to focus on the attitudes of this race/ethnicity toward women in policing. The findings revealed that the respondents generally supported women in policing, however males were less supportive than females. This analysis also indicates that African American, Hispanic, and White college students are all generally supportive of women …

Polydnaviruses are rarely studied for their natural variation in immune suppressive abilities. The polydnavirus harboring braconid Cotesia sesamiae, a widespread endoparasitoid of Busseola fusca and Sesamia calamistis in sub-Saharan Africa exists as two biotypes. In Kenya, the western biotype completes development in B. fusca larvae. However, eggs of the coastal C. sesamiae are encapsulated in this host and ultimately, no parasitoids emerge from parasitized B. fusca larvae. Both biotypes develop successfully in S. calamistis larvae. Encapsulation activity by B. fusca larvae towards eggs of the avirulent C. sesamiae was detectable six hours post-parasitization. The differences in encapsulation of virulent and …

An important prediction from game theory is that the value of a resource influences the level to which male-male conflict escalates. Earlier experimental studies have shown that the seven salticid species we study here (Bavia aericeps, Euryattus sp., Hypoblemum albovittatum, Jacksonoides queenslandicus, Marpissa marina, Portia africana and Simaetha paetula) determine by sight whether a female is a conspecific or a heterospecific and then escalate the intensity with which they interact (i.e., they adopt behaviour that is likely to put them at greater risk of injury after detecting the presence of a conspecific female). Here the earlier studies are extended by …

Business Administration Dissertations - Archive
Academic research in various areas of entrepreneurship has gained momentum over the past three decades. A primary topic of interest has been the characteristics of entrepreneurial organizations, often referred to as the entrepreneurial orientation (EO) of the firm. The current study investigates past contributions in this stream of literature, seeking to provide definitive evidence of previously examined relationships. Further, the study analyzes several moderating influences and provides a new model for assessing a firm's EO. A meta-analytic statistical procedure is applied in the empirical portion of this dissertation. The base models of interest are the relationships between EO, innovativeness, proactiveness …

Instruction on problem solving in particular domains typically relies on explanations from experts about their strategies. However, research indicates that such self-reports often are incomplete or inaccurate (e.g., Chao & Salvendy, 1994; Cooke & Breedin, 1994). This article evaluates research on experts’ cognition, the accuracy of experts’ self-reports, and the efficacy of instruction based on experts’ self-reports. Analysis of this evidence indicates that experts’ free recall of strategies introduces errors and omissions into instructional materials that hinder student success. In contrast, when experts engage in structured knowledge elicitation techniques (e.g., cognitive task analysis), the resultant instruction is more effective. Based …

Tetranychus evansi is an exotic pest of Solanaceous crops in Africa discovered in Zimbabwe in 1979. Two natural enemies, the predatory mite Phytoseiulus longipes and the fungal pathogen Neozygites floridana are important causes of mortality in T. evansi populations in Brazil. The first part of this study assessed the effects of N. floridana on predation and oviposition of P. longipes fed on N. floridana infected T. evansi and T. urticae. No N. floridana hyphal bodies were found in P. longipes after this feeding, demonstrating that N. floridana is not pathogenic to P. longipes and does not affect its oviposition. The …

The use of trap crops such as cowpea could reduce the effects of the root parasitic weed, Striga hermonthica and its subsequent constraints on the growth of cereals. Certain bacteria could augment the trap crop stimulatory effect. We studied the effect of three bacteria introduced to the rhizosphere of three cowpea varieties at planting. Number of days to cowpea flowering was noted and at harvest, data were collected on pod characteristics and biomass. Means of data subjected to ANOVA were compared using Tukey's Studentized Range Test. We analysed bacterial headspace volatiles for ethylene by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. …

Background. The origin of highly competent malaria vectors has been linked to productive larval habitats in the field, but there isn't solid quantitative or qualitative data to support it. To test this, the effect of larval habitat soil substrates on larval development time, pupation rates and vector competence of Anopheles gambiae to Plasmodium falciparum were examined. Methods. Soils were collected from active larval habitats with sandy and clay substrates from field sites and their total organic matter estimated. An. gambiae larvae were reared on these soil substrates and the larval development time and pupation rates monitored. The emerging adult mosquitoes …
