Chemotherapy Related Cognitive Impairment In The Rat, Jessica Boyette Davis
Chemotherapy Related Cognitive Impairment In The Rat, Jessica Boyette Davis
Psychology Theses - Archive
Treatment for cancer has been indicated to negatively impact the quality of life for patients. Specifically, chemotherapy has been associated with fatigue, nausea, and peripheral neuropathy. More recently, chemotherapy has also been found to be related to cognitive impairment in various cognitive domains including working memory, information processing speed, and visual attention. At this time, the mechanisms underlying this impairment are not understood and there is currently no treatment for this condition. The purpose of this study was to model chemotherapy related cognitive impairments using an established test of attention in rats. While receiving the chemotherapeutic agent Taxol, animals were …
Regression Model For Prioritization Of Corridors When Retiming Traffic Signals, Manjari G. Mittal
Regression Model For Prioritization Of Corridors When Retiming Traffic Signals, Manjari G. Mittal
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Traffic signals are used by transportation engineers to safely and efficiently manage vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic on roadways. However, to maintain the effectiveness of traffic signals, traffic signals should be adjusted or retimed periodically to match the current traffic patterns. Traffic signal retiming is one of the most cost effective ways available to transportation engineers for reducing delays and mitigating congestion. A region may contain a large number of traffic signals all of which cannot be retimed at once due to limited availability of funds and other resources; only a subset of signals can be retimed at any given …
The Textual Construction Of Femininity In Women's Fitness Magazines, Tracy Lynn Rundstrom Williams
The Textual Construction Of Femininity In Women's Fitness Magazines, Tracy Lynn Rundstrom Williams
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
Women in the first decade of the 21st century encounter competing ideologies of traditional femininity and empowered femininity. Language, in particular Discourse Analysis, provides a means for investigating what these ideologies, or discourses, are and how they are perpetuated. One source of language which encodes and perpetuates ideologies of femininity is women's magazines. As pervasive, monthly texts directed specifically at women, women's magazines provide a rich source of contemporary ideologies of femininity. Given the rise of health and fitness magazines over the past 20 years, it appears that one primary focus of contemporary femininity is the body. Previous research has …

Public Affairs Theses - Archive
Objective. High school students across North Texas are failing to meet the academic standards of the federal No Child Left Behind Act. In response, after-school programs have been implemented to support cognitive and communal development of these at-risk youth. Technology can play a role in after-school by expanding the boundaries of the traditional classroom. This study evaluates the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Technology Center (MLK CTC) After-School Program between August 2006 and July 2007. Methods. Evaluation outcomes are based on the MLK CTC program objectives. The evaluation looks also at educational gains within the program and employs a paired …
In One Ear And In The Other: The Net Effect Of Advertising Frequency, Brent Andrew Wiethoff
In One Ear And In The Other: The Net Effect Of Advertising Frequency, Brent Andrew Wiethoff
Communication Theses - Archive
This research used both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to explore the possible effects and functions that advertising may perform in developing individuals' attitudes. Using the Elaboration Likelihood Model (Petty & Cacioppo, 1984) and Cultivation Theory (Gerbner, 1979), advertising is viewed as a frequently repeated, consistent set of messages that reinforce consumer ideas and values. The net effect of advertising is examined through focus group discussion of high-media/high-materialist individuals. Results of the study show four themes emerging from advertising (advertisements as an entrance to participation in culture, advertisements as a landscape, advertisements as validation and legitimacy, and advertisements as need-generators). Discussion …

Background. A previous study showed for Anopheles gambiae s.s. a gradation of feeding preference on common plant species growing in a malaria holoendemic area in western Kenya. The present follow-up study determines whether there is a relationship between the mosquito's preferences and its survival and fecundity. Methods. Groups of mosquitoes were separately given ad libitum opportunity to feed on five of the more preferred plant species (Hamelia patens, Parthenium hysterophorus, Ricinus communis, Senna didymobotrya, and Tecoma stans) and one of the less preferred species (Lantana camara). The mosquitoes were monitored daily for survival. Sugar solution (glucose 6%) and water were …

Effective teachers know that when students are engaged in active learning, they learn more, retain it longer, apply it better, and continue to learn (Weimer, 1993). One way to promote such learning is through the use of innovative classroom activities that lead students to understand, interpret, and/or apply information. In that spirit, educators in the field of communication have developed an array of activities and demonstrations for promoting active learning in students of social influence. To facilitate the use of such activities, this article uses an annotated bibliography format to review over 30 published articles designed by communication teachers to …

Female-biased sex ratios in Danaus chrysippus (Linnaeus) (family Nymphalidae, subfamily Danainae, tribe Danaini) populations are attributed to the action of an endosymbiotic 'male-killer' bacterium of the genus Spiroplasma. In stark contrast to the extensive geographic range of their host, the Spiroplasma appears to be restricted to East Africa, where four African D. chrysippus subspecies exist sympatrically and form a hybrid zone. In this study, specimens collected at three sample sites within the hybrid zone were screened for Spiroplasma infection. The findings demonstrate that, within the hybrid zone, the frequency of Spiroplasma infection varies both spatially and temporally. Host genotype at …

Studies have shown that learning outcomes are related to the amount of time students engage in learning tasks. However, visits to schools have revealed that students are often taught for only a fraction of the intended time, particularly in lower-income countries. Losses are due to informal school closures, teacher absenteeism, delays, early departures, and sub-optimal use of time in the classroom. A study was undertaken to develop an efficient methodology for measuring instructional time loss. Thus, instructional time use was measured in sampled schools in Tunisia, Morocco, Ghana, and the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. The percentage of time that students …

Time-Varying Feedback Systems Design Via Diophantine Equation Order Reduction, Shr-Hua Wu
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Diophantine equation plays an important role in the design and synthesis of feedback compensators. Many methods have been developed to solve the Diophantine equation. This dissertation develops a new systematic approach of solving a linear time-varying Diophantine equation. This approach is based upon successively reducing the order of the Diophantine equation by Euclidean algorithm. Euclidean algorithm for solving for both time-invariant and time-varying Diophantine equations for directly determining both the quotient and the remainder associated with the division of one polynomial by another is presented. The coprimeness (right or left) of two Polynomial Differential Operators is needed to guarantee, in …

On The Power Of The Multiple Associative Computing (Masc) Model Related To That Of Reconfigurable Bus-Based Models, Mingxian Jin, Johnnie W. Baker
College of Health, Science, and Technology
The MASC model is a multi-SIMD model that uses control parallelism to coordinate the interaction of data parallel threads. It supports a generalized associative style of parallel computation. The power of this model has been compared to that of priority CRCW PRAM and enhanced meshes. In this paper, we present the work on simulations between MASC and reconfigurable bus-based models, in particular, different versions of the Reconfigurable Multiple Bus Machine (RMBM). It is shown that MASC and the Basic RMBM (B-RMBM) can simulate each other in constant time if the number of buses on the B-RMBM is ?(j) where j …

There is much dialog concerning the use of native plants in the roadside environment. From the Highway Beautification of Lady Bird Johnson in the 1960's to the environmental issues of today, designers are focused on ways to incorporate native plant material in the roadside. Through qualitative analysis, this thesis explores best practices for the use of native plant material in the roadside as compared with a unique roadside design in North Texas. In 2003, The North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) began design for the Texas Highway 190 Tollway. A new direction for roadside enhancement using native and adapted plant material …

A Two-Order Effect Model Of It Business Value: Theoretical Development And Empirical Test, Vishnu Vinekar
Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive
A new model for IT Business Value is proposed and empirically validated from longitudinal panel data. We posit that IT has a first-order effect that includes automating, and a second-order effect that is more dependent on informating. Our empirical results demonstrate that IT's contribution to firm performance is mediated via its impacts on productivity, which corresponds to the first-order effect. We further developed and validated a complex but parsimonious moderated-mediation model to show that these paths to business value from IT vary depending on industry information intensity, environmental dynamism, and environmental munificence.
