Users' Perceptions Of The Design And Value Of Hiking Trail Systems: A Comparison From National, State, And Regional Parks, Richard Wayne Hooker

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

Hiking trail systems are added to many park plans by today's landscape architects. Hiking trails are defined in this thesis as paths and trails, improved or unimproved, in park areas where nature is the primary environment, rather than of an urban environment in which sidewalks are the main areas that the public uses to walk and exercise. This thesis examines how the users of hiking trails perceive existing trail system designs and the value users acquire from well designed trails. Hiking trail users are motivated by improving physical health, relieving mental stress and enjoying scenery. This study looks at three …

This study focuses on the role of information technologies in healthcare, and investigates the relationship of IT sophistication to patient safety, healthcare quality, and financial performance in Texas acute care hospitals. A value/supply chain perspective guides the development of a general model that integrates hospitals' IT sophistication with their patient and financial outcomes. From the model emerge hypotheses that are tested using the structural equation modeling approach, taking into account differences in outcomes across small, medium, and large hospitals. Our testing and comparisons give insight into the dynamics of health information technology and provide specific direction for practitioners and future …

The Effect Of Leadership Style On Cio Effectiveness, Kishen Parthasarathy Iyengar Apr 2008

The Effect Of Leadership Style On Cio Effectiveness, Kishen Parthasarathy Iyengar

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive

While IS researchers have often opined that leadership is important, a theoretical examination of leadership in the CIO context is lacking. We examine Leadership style in the light of the transformational leadership theory and its impact on organizational level variables such as CIO Role Effectiveness and IT ambidexterity, and individual level variables such as Leader-Member Exchange Relationship and the subordinate's general job satisfaction. Results indicate that contingent rewarding style impacted CIO role effectiveness, which in turn predicted IT ambidexterity. Transformational leadership was the strongest predictor of Leader-Member Exchange relationship, which in turn impacted job satisfaction.

Challenging Tradition: Parkland Dedication In Subdivision Development, William Walker Secker

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

Growth patterns of the last half century have been urbanizing the American landscape (Corrigan, et al, 2004). This new landscape has been created by the horizontal development of single-use, single-family residential housing subdivisions (Berger, 2006). The physical design of these subdivisions is the direct result of rational zoning, subdivision laws, and ordinances that were adapted for the automobile as well as market demands (Steiner, 1994). These land development strategies have created a multitude of housing opportunities for the American public, but also have created growth patterns that separate people from the natural environment and related activities (Duany, Plater-Zyberk, and Speck, …

Distribution Of White Spruce In Alaska. An Open Access Prediction Surface From Climatic And Bioclimatic Parameters Using Esri Grid Formats., Falk Huettmann

Faculty

This open access data set contains a spatially gridded distribution of White Spruce in Alaska (ESRI GRID format), predicted from climatic and bioclimatic parameters (temperature, precipitation, elevation, and aspect). A species distribution model, developed by Bettina Ohse, was used to determine the ecological niche of the species based on the environmental variables. The model was developed within TreeNet, a classification and regression tree software. The ecological niche was then projected into geographical space, resulting in a predictive map of the species distribution in Alaska (4km resolution, tested accuracy of c. 95 %). We used ArcGIS 9.2. Data sources were freely …

Origin Of Lunar High-Titanium Ultramafic Glasses: A Hybridized Source?, Steven Singletary, Timothy Grove

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Two new hypotheses for the origin of the lunar high-Ti ultramafic glasses are considered in this study. These new models are motivated by experimental results on a model hybridized lunar magma ocean cumulate composition and by the failure of current models to adequately account for the processes that lead to the origin of these unique lunar ultramafic magmas. In the first model we propose that the observed compositional variability at the high-Ti end of the glass spectrum is created by melting of compositionally heterogeneous source materials produced during the late stages of magma ocean crystallization. The lunar hybridized source composition …

Susceptibility Of Chlamydia Trachomatis To The Excipient Hydroxy-Ethylcellulose: Ph And Concentration Dependence Of Antimicrobial Activity, Ali A. Abdul-Sater, David M. Ojcius, M. P. Meyer

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is used as a neutral excipient in microbicides used against sexually transmitted pathogens. However, HEC inhibits the infection of cervical epithelial cells by Chlamydia trachomatis at pH 5 in a concentration-dependent manner. At pH 7, infection is inversely dependent on the concentration of HEC, possibly due to pH-dependent calcium sequestration.

Spectroscopy Is Applied Quantum Mechanics. Part 3: Introduction To Quantum Mechanics, David W. Ball

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The article discusses the pioneering work of Erwin Schrödinger on wave mechanics that forms the basis of modern understanding in subatomic behavior. Schrödinger introduced a second-order differential equation that had to be solved to explain the nature of the hydrogen atom. He also demonstrated that the matrix mechanics of Heisenberg and Born were mathematically equivalent and developed the concept of perturbation theory to explain the Stark effect.

Recollecting Memory, Reviewing History: Trauma In Asian North American Literature, Guan-Rong Chen Apr 2008

Recollecting Memory, Reviewing History: Trauma In Asian North American Literature, Guan-Rong Chen

English Dissertations - Archive

My dissertation focuses on representations of traumas in select eight Asian North American novels. I attempt to draw attention to this underrepresented issue of the Asian minority's traumatic experiences. Trauma in my discussion includes double consciousness, national trauma of war, white racism toward the Asian minority, children's perspectives on melancholia and loss, as well as psychosomatic trauma and violence on the female body. In Chapter One, I argue that in Jade Snow Wong's Fifth Chinese Daughter and Fae Myenne Ng’s Bone double consciousness is represented as a racial(ized) trauma that creates an ideological dichotomy between East and West, and constrains …

Hollywood To Hilltop: Does Celebrity Status Act As A Peripheral Cue In Voting Decisions, Angela Beth Torrey Apr 2008

Hollywood To Hilltop: Does Celebrity Status Act As A Peripheral Cue In Voting Decisions, Angela Beth Torrey

Communication Theses - Archive

Given the increase in Hollywood celebrities running for political office and the young adult population's cultural tendency to glorify the lives of celebrities, this research explored tenets of the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) to determine whether celebrity status acts as a peripheral cue that makes thoughtful engagement of political candidates and their stances unlikely in young adult's voting decisions. Indeed, the results of this study found that celebrity status does serve as such a cue, in many cases making it more likely that a celebrity would be voted for and liked more, when compared to an otherwise-comparable candidate. Further applying …

Misreading Justice: The Rhetoric Of Revenge In Feminist Texts About Domestic Violence, Kimberly Paige Bowers Apr 2008

Misreading Justice: The Rhetoric Of Revenge In Feminist Texts About Domestic Violence, Kimberly Paige Bowers

English Dissertations - Archive

Feminist legal theories of battering homicides pose a challenge to feminist critics of American literature. Legal theorists argue that many women who are tried for killing their abusive partners should be acquitted on the grounds of self-defense. While they have had some success, stereotypes suggesting that women who kill are vengeful result in the wrongful convictions of too many female defendants. Feminist narratives that depict women who kill their abusers abound in American literature. Too often the scholarship on these narratives conflates revenge and self-defense, contributing to the problems feminist lawyers face. Looking at literature and legal scholarship from the …

Fabrication Of Fept Ferromagnetic Nanoparticles, Kevin Eugene Elkins Apr 2008

Fabrication Of Fept Ferromagnetic Nanoparticles, Kevin Eugene Elkins

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Fabrication of chemically disordered FePt particles ranging from 2 - 9 nm with a precision of 1 nm has been achieved through modification of key process variables including surfactant concentration, heating rates and the type of iron precursor. In addition, the shape evolution of the FePt nanoparticles during particle growth can be manipulated to give cubic or rod geometries through changes to the surfactant injection sequence and solvent system. The primary method for synthesis of the disordered FePt nanoparticles is the polyol reduction reported by Fievet et al., which has been modified and used extensively for synthesis of diff ering …

Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning Using Automatic Task Decomposition And Exploration Shaping, Predrag Djurdjevic Apr 2008

Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning Using Automatic Task Decomposition And Exploration Shaping, Predrag Djurdjevic

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Reinforcement learning agents situated in real world environments have to be able to address a number of challenges in order to succeed at accomplishing a wide range of tasks over their lifetime. Among these, such systems have to be able to extract control knowledge from already learned tasks and apply them to subsequent ones in order to allow the agent to accomplish the new task faster and to accelerate the learning of an optimal policy. To address skill reuse and skill transfer, a number of approaches using hierarchical state and action spaces have been introduced recently which build on the …

Essays On Asset Pricing And Growth Effect, Wikrom Prombutr

Finance and Real Estate Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation comprises two essays on growth effects and opportunities experienced by companies and their implications for asset pricing models. In the first essay, I develop and test a model to explain the empirically observed value-growth stock return effect using real options theory. I simulate results from a real options model for two firm types. One type, the "value" firm, has a single growth opportunity. The other type, the "growth" firm, has infinitely repeated growth opportunities. Growth firms: (1) invest sooner, (2) pursue less lumpy investment paths, (3) have lower book-to-market ratios, and (4) generate lower rates of return than …

Shared Land Use Impacts Between Military Installations And Contiguous Communities (Post-Brac): Fact And Opinion Differences In Planning And Public Policy, Rumanda Kay Young Apr 2008

Shared Land Use Impacts Between Military Installations And Contiguous Communities (Post-Brac): Fact And Opinion Differences In Planning And Public Policy, Rumanda Kay Young

Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive

How a policy or planning tool (e.g. BRAC) contributes to real and perceived conclusions from policy implementation is the main focus of this research. This research examines differences between real and perceived encroachment issues and concerns through study of military installations and their contiguous communities using post-BRAC opinion data compared to conclusions drawn from pre-BRAC and post-BRAC empirical data. A study of six (6) supporting research topics from current literature leads to a hypothesis that there are no differences between the same variables using empirical data (reality) and opinions (perception) with respect to variable descriptors of encroachment in the post-BRAC …

Impact Of Lateral Swell Pressure On Retaining Structure Design Using Expansive Cohesive Backfill, Mark G. Thomas Apr 2008

Impact Of Lateral Swell Pressure On Retaining Structure Design Using Expansive Cohesive Backfill, Mark G. Thomas

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Since cohesive soils are difficult to drain once becoming saturated, in order to reduce lateral earth pressures exerted by saturated cohesive soils on retaining structures, retaining wall designs most always specify use of drainable granular backfill. However, costs for the importation of granular backfill materials continues to increase due to depletion of these materials in certain areas, and to the ever-increasing costs for material transportation, largely related to increased labor and fuel prices. These factors, together with the costs of removing replaced cohesive materials, and coupled with resource and environmental conservation concerns, are driving efforts to develop reasonable and prudent …

Institutional Distance And Foreign Ipo Performance: The Moderating Effects Of Governance And Organizational Capabilities, Robert Greg Bell

Management Dissertations - Archive

To date scholars have examined a wide range of factors which impact the ability of firms to raise optimum levels of equity capital in their domestic markets. However, little attention has been paid to the growing number of new listings of foreign firms in Western markets. When firms attempt to raise capital in foreign markets through an IPO, firm characteristics alone fail to provide a complete explanation for the success or failure of a new issue. This study investigates how the institutional profile and legal framework of a country can interact with certain firm-level governance and organizational capabilities to enable …
