Reconceptualizing Technology Use And Information System Success: Developing And Testing A Theoretically Integrated Model, Keng-Jung Yeh Sep 2009

Reconceptualizing Technology Use And Information System Success: Developing And Testing A Theoretically Integrated Model, Keng-Jung Yeh

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive

Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) research, which pertains to how an information system can be initially adopted by members of an organization, was born two decades ago and grows into one of the pivotal theoretical foundations of the information systems (IS) discipline. However, many IS scholars indicate that recent TAM research fail to break the 20-years-old confinement and provide little intellectual value. To respond to this call for more intellectual depth in TAM research, this dissertation suggests multiple ways to rejuvenate the research stream. First, Bhattacherjee's IS use continuance model (2001), which is based on the Expectation-Disconfirmation Theory, was adopted as the …

Dialectic Aesthetics: The Landscape Aesthetics Of Steven Bourassa And The Architecture Aesthetics Of Roger Scruton, Jacob M. Baker

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

This paper explores the similarities and differences between Roger Scruton's The Aesthetics of Architecture and Steven Bourassa's The Aesthetics of Landscape. The purpose of Scruton's book, according to Scruton, is to introduce readers to aesthetics. Architecture was chosen as the explanatory device because it poses unique problems to aesthetics. One such problem, Scruton explains, is that architecture is not just an aesthetic object; it also must satisfy human needs. This separates architecture from other arts that are not required to satisfy the same human needs. Scruton also chose architecture because in his opinion, no one up to that point, (1979,) …

To Test Before Or To Test After - An Experimental Investigation Of The Impact Of Test Driven Development, Vikram Singh Bhadauria Sep 2009

To Test Before Or To Test After - An Experimental Investigation Of The Impact Of Test Driven Development, Vikram Singh Bhadauria

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive

Test driven development (TDD) requires the developer to create the test suite before designing and writing the application program. Unlike traditional software development practices, in TDD test development precedes application development. Such a practice also redefines the role of the developer. Lately, TDD is growing in popularity as a part of Agile methodologies. There is a critical need for rigorous empirical research to understand the role and impact of TDD as a software development practice. The goal of this dissertation research is to fill this gap. We conducted a Laboratory Experiment to understand the influence of TDD on the outcomes …

An Examination Of The Role For Landscape Architects In The No Child Left Inside Movement, Wade Miller

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

The disconnection, or lack of interaction and experience, between children and nature has been coined Nature Deficit Disorder and popularized by Louv (Louv 2005, pp. 139-140). Current research and writing regarding the child and nature disconnect has spawned the No Child Left Inside movement. This movement is an initiative being adopted by cities, states, federal agencies and other organizations committed to reconnecting children with nature by providing a wide range of opportunities to experience nature directly, while building the next generation of environmentally conscious citizens. This research examines how landscape architecture is viewed by those associated with Children and Nature Network …

Atmospheric Mercury Concentrations And Speciation Measured From 2004 To 2007 In Reno, Nevada, Usa, Seth N. Lyman, Mae Sexauer Gustin

USU Uintah Basin Faculty Publications

Atmospheric elemental, reactive and particulate mercury (Hg) concentrations were measured north of downtown Reno, Nevada, USA from November 2004 to November 2007. Three-year mean and median concentrations for gaseous elemental Hg (Hg0) were 1.6 and 1.5 ng m−3 (respectively), similar to global mean Hg0 concentrations. The three-year mean reactive gaseous Hg (RGM) concentration (26 pg m−3) was higher than values reported for rural sites across the western United States. Well defined seasonal and daily patterns in Hg0 and RGM concentrations were observed, with the highest Hg0 concentrations measured in winter and early morning, and RGM concentrations being greatest in the …

A New Class Of Symmetry Reductions For Parameter Identification Problems, Nicoleta Bîl?, Jitse Niesen Sep 2009

A New Class Of Symmetry Reductions For Parameter Identification Problems, Nicoleta Bîl?, Jitse Niesen

College of Health, Science, and Technology

This paper introduces a new type of symmetry reductions called extended nonclassical symmetries that can be studied for parameter identification problems described by partial differential equations. Including the data function in the parameter space, we show that specific data and parameter classes that lead to a reduced dimension model can be found. More exactly, since the extended nonclassical symmetries relate the forward and inverse problems, the dimension of the studied equation may be reduced by expressing the data and parameter in terms of the group invariants. The main advantage of these new symmetries is that they may be incorporated into …

Energy Budgets Of Eared Grebes On The Great Salt Lake And Implications For Harvest Of Brine Shrimp, Michael R. Conover, Joe N. Caudell Sep 2009

Energy Budgets Of Eared Grebes On The Great Salt Lake And Implications For Harvest Of Brine Shrimp, Michael R. Conover, Joe N. Caudell

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

About 1.5-million eared grebes (Podiceps nigricollis), representing half of the North American population, stage on Utah's Great Salt Lake, USA (GSL) during autumn migration to forage on brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana). Indirectly competing with birds for brine shrimp are commercial harvesters who annually collect >1 million kg (dry wt) of shrimp cysts (i.e., hardened eggs), an amount that during some years equals up to half of all brine shrimp cysts produced annually on the GSL. No information was available regarding what impact this commercial harvest was having on eared grebes. We determined daily energy requirements of eared grebes so that …

Termites encounter a diverse array of potentially useful and harmful fungi in their subterranean habitats. These vary from symbiotic to harmful species with varying levels of virulence. How these hemiedaphic insects survive in habitats with infective fungi is not well understood. Possible mediation of olfactory signals in avoiding contact with entomopathogenic fungi has been explored by a number of workers. In the present study, we initially found that Macrotermes michaelseni detected a virulent isolate of Metarhizium anisopliae from some distance and avoided direct physical contact. We hypothesized that there may be a relationship between virulence and repellency of different isolates …

Olfactory Attraction Of Egg Parasitoids To Virgin Females Of Noctuid Stemborers, Anani Yaovi Bruce, Fritz Schulthess, Jones Mueke, Paul André Calatayud Aug 2009

Olfactory Attraction Of Egg Parasitoids To Virgin Females Of Noctuid Stemborers, Anani Yaovi Bruce, Fritz Schulthess, Jones Mueke, Paul André Calatayud

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

To locate hosts, egg parasitoids rely on infochemicals of the adult host stage, e.g. pheromones, rather than cues emitted by the inconspicuous egg themselves. Here, we show that three different egg parasitoid species the scelionids Telenomus busseolae Gahan and Telenomus isis Polaszek and the trichogrammatid Trichogramma bournieri Pintureau & Babault were attracted to both calling and non-calling females of the noctuids Busseola fusca (Fuller), Sesamia calamistis (Hampson) and Sesamia nonagrioides (Lefebvre). In Y-tube olfactometer experiments this study revealed a preference of all three parasitoids for non-calling (general odors of virgin females) and calling moth (sex pheromone) over the control (clean …

Thermal Tolerance Of The Coffee Berry Borer Hypothenemus Hampei: Predictions Of Climate Change Impact On A Tropical Insect Pest, Juliana Jaramillo, Adenirin Chabi-Olaye, Charles Kamonjo, Alvaro Jaramillo, Fernando E. Vega, Hans Michael Poehling, Christian Borgemeister

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Coffee is predicted to be severely affected by climate change. We determined the thermal tolerance of the coffee berry borer , Hypothenemus hampei, the most devastating pest of coffee worldwide, and make inferences on the possible effects of climate change using climatic data from Colombia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Ethiopia. For this, the effect of eight temperature regimes (15, 20, 23, 25, 27, 30, 33 and 35°C) on the bionomics of H. hampei was studied. Successful egg to adult development occurred between 20-30°C. Using linear regression and a modified Logan model, the lower and upper thresholds for development were estimated at …

Water Deficit Stress Responses Of Three Herbaceous Native Australian Ornamental Species, Roger Kjelgren, Lixue Wang, Daryl Joyce Aug 2009

Water Deficit Stress Responses Of Three Herbaceous Native Australian Ornamental Species, Roger Kjelgren, Lixue Wang, Daryl Joyce

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Perennial wildflower species are important but not well-understood elements in water-wise landscaping that anchors urban water conservation programs in arid climates. Comparative growth and physiological responses to soil substrate drying of three herbaceous Australian ornamental species from habitats of variable moisture regimes were investigated in the context of isohydric and anisohydric behavior. Clonal Orthosiphon aristatus, Dianella revoluta ‘Breeze’, and Ptilotus nobilis plants were container-grown individually and competitively together in two separate studies. In both studies, plants were water-stressed through cyclical dry downs. We measured stomatal conductance (g S), soil water content, and water potential during each study and osmotic adjustment …

Cultural Adaptation Of Treatments: A Resource For Considering Culture In Evidence-Based Practice, Guillermo Bernal, María I. Jiménez-Chafey, Melanie M. Domenech-Rodriguez

Psychology Faculty Publications

There is a growing interest in whether and how to adapt psychotherapies to take into account the cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic context of diverse ethnocultural groups. At the root of the debate is theissue of whether evidence-based treatments (EBTs) developed within a particular linguistic and cultural context are appropriate for ethnocultural groups that do not share the same language, cultural values, or both. There is considerable evidence that culture and context influence almost every aspect of the diagnostic and treatment process. Yet, there are concerns about fidelity of interventions, and some have questioned whether tinkering with well-established EBTs is warranted. …

This article describes a data collection approach for determining the significance of individual heat fluxes within streamswith an emphasis on testing (i.e. identification of possible missing heat fluxes), development, calibration and corroborationof a dynamic temperature model. The basis for developing this approach was a preliminary temperature modelling effort onthe Virgin River in southwestern Utah during a low-flow period that suggested important components of the energy balancemight be missing in the o riginal standard surface-flux temperat ure model. Possible missing heat fluxes were identi fied as bedconduction, hyporheic exchange, dead zone warming and exchange and poor representation of the amount of …

Testing And Application Of Surrogate Surfaces For Understanding Potential Gaseous Oxidized Mercury Dry Deposition, Seth N. Lyman, Mae Sexauer Gustin, Eric M. Prestbo, Phillip I. Kilner, Eric Edgerton, Ben Hartsell

USU Uintah Basin Faculty Publications

Currently there is no standard method for measurement of atmospheric mercury dry deposition. While all operationally defined forms of atmospheric mercury (elemental, oxidized, and particulate) can be dry deposited, oxidized forms are of concern due to high deposition velocities, water solubility, and reactivity. This paper describes the development of a surrogate surface for characterizing potential dry deposition of gaseous oxidized mercury (GOM). Laboratory tests showed that the surface collected HgCl2, HgBr2, and HgO with equal efficiency, and deposition was not significantly influenced by temperature, humidity, or ozone concentrations. Deposition of mercury to surfaces in field deployments was correlated with GOM …
