Fiber-Optic Pressure Sensor For Time-Of-Flight Measurements In A Shock Wave, Karthikeyan Jagadevan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Fiber-optic sensors are widely employed to detect pressures and temperatures precisely. In particular, MEMS-based Ber-optic sensors are immune to electromagnetic interference but may have limitations at high temperatures as encountered in combustors. To ensure high-temperature survivability, such sensors may be bondedanodically. This project explains the development of a Ber-optic pressure sensor utilizing intensity based principle whereby a fused silica optical window was glued to the tungsten carbide enclosure. The development was estimated to determine high pressures of up to at least 3.5 MPa (507 psi). The sensor is designed to capture the pressure pulse and the time-of-flight (TOF) of a …

Peak Stress Of Composite Multiple-Hole Laminates With And Without Patch, Sakthivel Selvaraj Jan 2010

Peak Stress Of Composite Multiple-Hole Laminates With And Without Patch, Sakthivel Selvaraj

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

In repairing of composite structures, the damage in the composite laminate is usually removed in the form of circular cutouts which results in holes in the laminate. Then a patch laminate is adhesively bonded to the damaged composite laminate. The presence of holes in any structures creates a high stress concentration at the edge of the hole which indeed reduces the life of the structure. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the high stress of the damaged laminate with different hole patterns and the effect of having single and double patches with various configurations on these hole …

Talking To Strangers--A Sociolinguistic Experiment: Variation In Initial Dyadic Interactions Between Spanish-Speakers In Early 21st Century Buenos Aires, Argentina, Mary Ann Dziugis

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

What are the chances of a dyad of Spanish-speaking strangers using informal address in casual, initial interactions in Buenos Aires, Argentina, today? To discover the pattern(s) of contemporary address, the Principal Investigator (PI) conducted a sociolinguistic experiment focusing on strangers' initial interactions to minimize the influence of Brown and Gilman's (1960) dimensions of power and solidarity on address variation. To gather natural and reported speech, the PI used mixed methodologies: participant observation, TV news, survey questionnaires, and interviews. She enhanced the authenticity of reported speech via the use of her new tool--a photo interlocutor prompter sheet. The research consisted of …

Articulations Of Identity Within High School Cliques: Language Choices In Boyat And Emo Filipino Youth Groups, Dalal Saleh Almubayei Jan 2010

Articulations Of Identity Within High School Cliques: Language Choices In Boyat And Emo Filipino Youth Groups, Dalal Saleh Almubayei

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation adds to work exploring where language stands in the shaping of adolescent speakers' social identities, since identities emerge through discursive and social practices, and social selves are produced through interaction (Bucholtz 1999), but much of the literature studying the role of language in defining the adolescent's identity is insufficient (Fortman 2003). This study is based on data from five months of fieldwork in 2008-2009 with two distinct and stigmatized high school cliques in Kuwait. The first clique is well known for its Arabish name boyat 'lesbian tomboys'. The second clique is a combination of Emo subculture and Filipino …

Self-Assembly Of Polystyrene Nanospheres And Its Applications As Templates For Plasmonic Structures, Shih-Hsin Chang

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Monodispersed colloidal polystyrene spheres have been self-assembled into various structures as templates for the fabrication of different nanostructures. Two unique self-assembly processes have been developed and systematically investigated. A method to make the multi-layer and mono-layer close-packed structure by means of capillary-convective force has been developed. By directly visualizing the self-assembling process using optical microscopy, a mechanism based on the 2-D crystal formation and 3-D repulsive force model has been proposed to explain the process. A vertical deposition technique to produce nanosphere crystal structure with single orientation on hydrophilic glass substrate has also been developed. Using a lithographically patterned substrate …

People use external knowledge representations (KRs) to create, identify, depict, transform, store, share, and archive information. Learning to work with KRs is central to becoming proficient in virtually every discipline. As such, KRs play central roles in curriculum, instruction, and assessment. We describe five key roles of KRs in assessment: 1. An assessment is itself a KR, which makes explicit the knowledge that is valued, ways it is used, and standards of good work. 2. The analysis of any domain in which learning is to be assessed must include the identification and analysis of the KRs in that domain. 3. …

Navigating Early College: Literacy Experiences And Identity Negotiations Of Latina/O Students, Holly Hungerford-Kresser

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications - Archive

This research provides insight into the adjustments of urban-schooled Latina/o students as they enter higher education. This year-and-a-half-long qualitative case study focuses on connections between identity negotiations and the academic literacies of five Latina/o college students at a predominately White university. Specifically, I draw on sociocultural definitions of literacy along with literature that focuses on “identity as position” as a means of discussing the ways in which Latina/os are positioned by the discourses embedded in the academic literacies of the university. In seeming contradiction, the students in this study adopted critical perspectives as well as deficit perspectives as they navigated …

Effect Of Leachate Recirculation On Methane Generation Of A Bioreactor Landfill, Shahed R. Manzur Jan 2010

Effect Of Leachate Recirculation On Methane Generation Of A Bioreactor Landfill, Shahed R. Manzur

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Municipal solid waste (MSW) disposal is of current concern due to the green-house effect and rising temperature all around the globe. Landfill gas is generated from aerobic & anaerobic biodegradation of organic materials in municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill. Along with leachate, generation of Methane happens to be a by-product of the entire biodegradation process in MSW landfills. Conventional landfilling or dry cell concept minimizes the amount of moisture infiltration into the waste. In contrast, Enhanced Leachate Recirculation (ELR) or bioreactor operation facilitates leachate recirculation and distribution through the landfill that leads both reduction of time for waste stabilization and …

Social Exchange And Post-Employment Citizenship: Evidence From Public Accounting, David N. Herda Jan 2010

Social Exchange And Post-Employment Citizenship: Evidence From Public Accounting, David N. Herda

Accounting Dissertations - Archive

In this study I examine why some ex-employees more than others choose to benefit their former firm (post-employment citizenship). The study is based on social exchange theory and involves former employees of a Big Four accounting firm. Among individuals who left the firm voluntarily, post-employment citizenship was found to be predicted by a two-phase social exchange relationship between employees and the firm, and the two-phases, represented by during-employment perceived organizational support and during-employment organizational commitment, partially mediated the relationship between during-employment organizational fairness and post-employment citizenship. For layoff victims, I extend Brockner, Tyler, and Cooper-Schneider's (1992) research on the interaction …

The Internal Control Provisions Of Sarbanes-Oxley Act And Quality Of Interim Earnings, Lei Han Jan 2010

The Internal Control Provisions Of Sarbanes-Oxley Act And Quality Of Interim Earnings, Lei Han

Accounting Dissertations - Archive

This study examines the change in the quality of interim earnings around the enactment of Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) and whether the change differs between interim and annual earnings by focusing on the impact of internal control provisions. In particular, two hypotheses are tested in this study. First, the quality of interim earnings improves after the SOX. Second, the gap in earnings quality between annual and interim reporting decreases after the SOX. Prior research indicates that the quality of interim earnings is lower because managers have more discretion in interim reporting and interim earnings are only subject to review which involves …

Changes In Tests Of Patentability And The Effects On Return To Patenting Of Business Method Patents, Darren Sheets

Economics Theses - Archive

In the past decade there has been a surge of business method patents granted, due in large part to court cases that have redefined the tests for determining patentability of these inventions. This is of interest for several reasons such as the legality of these patents and their role in promoting innovation. Rather than promoting innovation as desired, they may be used to block rival firms from competing or used as bargaining chips in negotiations. This research focuses on the relationship between firm value and the importance of a firm's patent portfolio. To measure the strength of a patent portfolio …

In 2009, the American Cancer Society (ACS) predicted that, of the 219,440 expected new cases of lung cancer, approximately 169,000 cancer-related deaths would be attributable to the use of some form of tobacco products. The ACS further suggests that all cancers caused by cigarette smoking are completely preventable. The source of prevention may be in an individual's behavior patterns. If researchers can better understand the thought processes behind harmful behavior patterns (such as smoking), then perhaps effective strategies for decreasing the influence of negative thought patterns (and subsequent behaviors) are within reach. This study found that possessing intent to cut …

What About The Other Core Evaluations? The Development And Validation Of A Measure Of Core Other-Evaluations And Its Relevance For Organizational Teams, Chloe J. Lemelle

Psychology Dissertations - Archive

The construct of core self-evaluations has garnered a great deal of attention in the organizational psychology literature and has been hailed as one of the strongest predictors of job satisfaction. However, the construct of core self-evaluations is only one of the three core evaluations that Judge and colleagues originally described in their seminal work (Judge, Locke, & Durham, 1997). It is predicted that much can be explained about the dynamics of teams and the propensity to excel in a team environment through the study of core other-evaluations. With that objective, the current study developed and validated a comprehensive measure of …

Some Bullied Adolescents More Susceptible To Depression, Priya Anapurna Iyer Jan 2010

Some Bullied Adolescents More Susceptible To Depression, Priya Anapurna Iyer

Psychology Theses - Archive

Prior research has documented long-term detrimental effects (e.g. emotional distress, anxiety, and depression; Kochenderfer-Ladd & Wardrop, 2001) experienced as a result of being bullied as an adolescent. Although being a recipient of chronic peer victimization is clearly related to a myriad of psychological problems, not all bullied children react to these experiences in the same way. That is, some children may be more predisposed to internalizing problems, specifically depression, when bullied than are other children. This study examined the influence of genetic polymorphism in the serotonin transport gene (5HTTLPR) on the victimization-depression link. A total of 125 adolescents (Mage = …
