Correlation Of Sequence Stratigraphic Surfaces Of The Mid-Cretaceous Dakota Group From Subsurface To Outcrop Southern Denver Basin, Colorado., Yaqoub Y Y S M Alsayed Alrefaei

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

The D and J sandstone of the Cretaceous Dakota Group are considered as the major oil and gas producing units within in the Denver Basin. The distribution of these units in the Denver Basin is a sub-basin of the Early Cretaceous Western Interior Basin .These units are well understood within the northern Denver Basin and the linkage between the subsurface units and their equivalents in outcrop in the Front Range is well-established. They have gained less attention in southern parts of the basin and the linkage between the subsurface units and their equivalents in southern outcrop is not yet established. …

Chemostratigraphy And Paleoceanography Of The Mississippian Barnett Formation, Southern Fort Worth Basin, Texas, Usa, James Daniel Hoelke

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

The Mississippian (Visean-Serpukhovian) Barnett Formation is a lithologic unit composed primarily of laminated siliceous mudstone and calcareous siliceous mudstone with significant phosphate and sulfide phases present. The Barnett Formation was deposited in the Fort Worth Basin, a marine foreland basin that formed as a result of the early Ouachita Orogeny from the collision of Laurasia and Gondwana. In this study we used a variety of geochemical methods to provide a detailed assessment of the chemostratigraphy and paleoceanography of the Barnett Formation in the southern end of the Fort Worth Basin in Texas. Various aspects of the Barnett Formation studied include: …

Thermal Maturity And Porosity Development During Catagensis In The Barnett Shale, Fort Worth Basin, Texas, Nathan Glondys Jan 2011

Thermal Maturity And Porosity Development During Catagensis In The Barnett Shale, Fort Worth Basin, Texas, Nathan Glondys

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

Unconventional resource plays are typified by significantly recoverable volumes of thermally mature hydrocarbons (oil, condensate and/or gases) trapped within a low permeability shale formation acting as source, reservoir and seal. These systems pose a scientific and engineering challenge to produce recoverable hydrocarbons from, chiefly due to their low permeabilities. There is growing evidence that secondary porosity in organic gas bearing shales is created during the thermal maturation of kerogen. A better understanding of porosity development during maturation of mobile organics during catagenesis may yield new insight on how we view these systems. A comparative analysis of the gas phase(s), peak …

The Rise Of Glocal Generation Y: How Its Personality And Psychological Contract Is Affected By Global Forces And Local Context, Seyedeh Hoda Vaziri Bozorg

Management Theses - Archive

When Generation Y started to enter the workforce in the early 2000s, discussions about their characteristics and their impact on organizations began among scholars around the world. A question has been raised whether the generational shift seen around the world shares common characteristics and whether globalization and technology advancement have lead to a Global Generation Y. This thesis criticizes the idea of Global Generation Y, and defines the concept of Glocal Generation Y, which is influenced by global forces but reacts differently based on its local context. However, there are still some common characteristics that can be used by human …

Are Coworkers Good Soldiers Or Good Actors?, Tae Seok Yang Jan 2011

Are Coworkers Good Soldiers Or Good Actors?, Tae Seok Yang

Management Dissertations - Archive

Drawing from attribution theory, I propose a field study which develops and tests a model to describe (1) how individuals use multiple observations of coworker behavior to form attributions about whether beneficial behaviors have self-serving or prosocial motives, (2) how the attributions regarding the motive for coworker behavior (self-serving or prosocial) moderate the influence of organizational citizenship behaviors on affect toward that coworker, and finally, (3) how such affect toward a coworker translates into more distal performance-related evaluations of coworkers. Specifically, two attribution cues, distinctiveness and consistency, are considered as mechanism through which coworkers form beliefs about the motives for …

Socioeconomic Background And Parental Values: An Examination Of Approaches To Bureaucratic Discretion At The Street-Level, Jesse R. Booher Jan 2011

Socioeconomic Background And Parental Values: An Examination Of Approaches To Bureaucratic Discretion At The Street-Level, Jesse R. Booher

Public Affairs Theses - Archive

Scholarly literature on policy implementation at the street-level generally focuses on how workers act in response to external pressures. Pressures can include policy rules, organizational culture, and the identities of the clients. Academia has produced scant work, however, examining how the identities and backgrounds of street-level bureaucrats influence their approach to the discretion inherent in their jobs. This study seeks to fill that literary gap. Using semi-structured interviews with street-level bureaucrats in North Texas, the study yields two strong relationships. First, a relationship exists between the participants' socioeconomic backgrounds as children and how they approach discretion inherent to street-level bureaucracy. …

Data Sharing Between Transportation Planning And Public Health: Issues And Opportunities Using A Regional Eco-Logical Framework, Michele Berry Jan 2011

Data Sharing Between Transportation Planning And Public Health: Issues And Opportunities Using A Regional Eco-Logical Framework, Michele Berry

Public Affairs Theses - Archive

Transportation planning has been shown to strongly impact public health yet collaboration and data or information sharing between the two communities is lacking. The Eco-Logical approach is a potential solution designed to advance transportation planning through an integrated planning process that includes other stakeholders. However, since the Eco-Logical approach provides no guidance on forming collaborations, network theory will be used to fill this hole. Both the Eco-Logical approach and network theory place heavy emphasis on information sharing and data exchange. This study will examine the current status of data sharing between transportation planning and public health through an analysis of …

High School Influences On College Enrollment And College Graduation Of Dallas Independent School District 2002 Graduates, Linda K. Johnson Jan 2011

High School Influences On College Enrollment And College Graduation Of Dallas Independent School District 2002 Graduates, Linda K. Johnson

Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive

The overarching goal for American education under President Barack Obama has been to increase college enrollment and completion rates. The pressure to achieve this goal has been keenly felt in the postsecondary community, especially as federal and state funding have become increasingly tied to achieving higher college completion rates. Yet the adequate preparation of students lies primarily in the secondary system, and the literature contains many statistics that support the view that few students are adequately prepared, especially those who are educated in urban public school systems. The challenge was to determine actions that can be implemented by school districts …

The Emergence Of Women City Managers In Texas In The Late 20th Century And The Early 21st Century, Helen Kay Godbey Jan 2011

The Emergence Of Women City Managers In Texas In The Late 20th Century And The Early 21st Century, Helen Kay Godbey

Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive

The first generation of women city managers in the late 20th Century and early 21st Century have one thing in common: all were initially mentored and promoted by men. Like survivors of a Texas tornado that huddle in the closet and then peek out to see what is left of the world around them, these few women who became the first generation of assistant or city managers began to look around for other women who had also done so. Even though there were just a few, they began to mentor each other. I would propose that an enlightened public administration …

These microarray images need to be denoised to ensure reliable and accurate …

Online Learning Algorithms For Differential Dynamic Games And Optimal Control, Kyriakos G. Vamvoudakis Jan 2011

Online Learning Algorithms For Differential Dynamic Games And Optimal Control, Kyriakos G. Vamvoudakis

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Optimal control deals with the problem of finding a control law for a given system that a certain optimality criterion is achieved. It can be derived using Pontryagin's maximum principle (a necessary condition), or by solving the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation (a sufficient condition). Major drawback of optimal control is that it is offline. Adaptive control involves modifying the control law used by a controller to cope with the facts that the system is unknown or uncertain. Adaptive controllers are not optimal. Adaptive optimal controllers have been proposed by adding optimality criteria to an adaptive controller, or adding adaptive characteristics to an …

Compressive Sensing And Wireless Network Capacity With Performance Analysis, Davis Kirachaiwanich Jan 2011

Compressive Sensing And Wireless Network Capacity With Performance Analysis, Davis Kirachaiwanich

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation contains five reseach topics. In chapter 1, the performances of a noncoherent slow frequency-hopping system with M-ary frequency-shift-keyed modulation (NC-FH/MFSK) under various hostile jamming strategies are studied. Then, the knowledge obtained is used in developping a new "combined-jamming" interference model. The model can be used in analyzing the performance of NC- FH/MFSK networks, where transmissions from each network node can interfere with one another. An example application of the proposed model is the channel assignment in a multiradio FH/MFSK wireless mesh network (MR-FH/MFSK WMN). In chapter 2, the multiradio frequency-hopping wireless mesh networks (MR- WMN) is still being …

Guided-Mode Resonance Devices: Omnidirectional Reflectors, Wideband Absorbers, Sensors And Narrowband Filters, Wenhua Wu Jan 2011

Guided-Mode Resonance Devices: Omnidirectional Reflectors, Wideband Absorbers, Sensors And Narrowband Filters, Wenhua Wu

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

In this thesis, a series of guided-mode resonance (GMR) devices are developed and optimized in the optical spectral region. Some of these devices are designed by inverse algorithms such as genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization. One-dimensional subwavelength silicon and germanium gratings providing high omnidirectional reflectivity within specific band are designed respectively for TE and TM polarization. A simple amorphous silicon waveguide grating is proposed to enhance the absorbance for solar cells by 60% comparing with unpatterned structure. Another presented grating absorbs light nearly totally in the ~ 0.3-0.6 ìm wavelength band for all incidence angles independent of polarization, namely …

An Experimental Test Of Extended Contact Hypothesis: Its Boundary Conditions And Psychological Processes, Patricia A. Lyons Jan 2011

An Experimental Test Of Extended Contact Hypothesis: Its Boundary Conditions And Psychological Processes, Patricia A. Lyons

Psychology Dissertations - Archive

The extended contact hypothesis states that contact with an ingroup member, who has an outgroup friend, facilitates favorable outgroup attitudes (Wright, Aron, McLaughlin-Volpe, & Ropp, 1997). An experimental manipulation examined the hypothesis' assumption that ingroup identity salience facilitates extended contact effectiveness, the effect of national ingroup identity strength as a moderator of extended contact, and the hypothesized mediators of extended contact in the context of U.S. citizens' evaluations toward Arab immigrants in the United States, compared to Latino and European immigrants. Ninety, White females (Mean age = 21.33) were randomly assigned to conditions of extended contact with an ingroup partner …

The purpose of the current study was to compare bloggers' personalities to the personalities of non-bloggers, and to determine whether it is possible to identify individuals who are more likely to use the Internet in a problematic way. A sample of bloggers (N = 231) and non-bloggers (N = 248) completed a series of online surveys including the Big Five Inventory (BFI), the Online Cognition Survey (OCS), and a questionnaire about general Internet use. I found that bloggers scored significantly higher on the Big Five Trait Openness to Experience than did non-bloggers. Bloggers also reported higher scores of the Distraction …

Finally, My Thesis On Academic Procrastination, Justin Mccloskey Jan 2011

Finally, My Thesis On Academic Procrastination, Justin Mccloskey

Psychology Theses - Archive

References to procrastination have been dated back to as long as 3,000 years ago. However, research on procrastination is ironically enormously behind the curve in active research on its antecedents and effects. Academic procrastination is a unique outlet of procrastinatory tendencies and is the object of much less scientific research. Academic procrastination occurs when students needlessly delay completing projects, activities or assignments and has been linked to lower academic grades, poorer well-being, and more stress. Studies have found procrastination to be a vital predictor of success in college and the development of a scale upon which to measure it could …

Effect Of Number Of Ideas And Folders On Idea Generation In Groups, Lauren E. Arditti Jan 2011

Effect Of Number Of Ideas And Folders On Idea Generation In Groups, Lauren E. Arditti

Psychology Theses - Archive

Electronic brainstorming is a method developed to take advantage of the positive effects of collective ideation, such as cognitive stimulation, while decreasing production blocking and social loafing. Research indicates that as group size increases so does the total number of ideas generated. Yet, as groups get larger, brainstormers may succumb to cognitive overload and no longer benefit from the cognitive stimulation of other group members. To counter this potential source of production loss, the use of folders has been developed. Folders are a means of collecting ideas and distributing them among group members in smaller more manageable sets. However, studies …

Examining The Impact Of Opioid Withdrawal On Pain Processing: The Influence Of Social Isolation Stress, Megan Lynne Uhelski Jan 2011

Examining The Impact Of Opioid Withdrawal On Pain Processing: The Influence Of Social Isolation Stress, Megan Lynne Uhelski

Psychology Dissertations - Archive

The use of opioids as a traditional treatment for acute and chronic pain has been severely hindered by the addictive nature of these substances and the pain relief they provide. Clinical reports suggest that opioid addicts are hypersensitive to pain during abstinence, and this effect may persist for months afterward. Examinations of nociceptive processing during opioid withdrawal in rodents have produced mixed results, with little evidence of decreased thresholds or latencies to noxious stimuli. To date, no studies have explicitly evaluated pain affect during the withdrawal period. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was evaluate both sensory and affective …

Examining The Role Of Need For Closure In Psychological Distress Following Genetic Testing For Breast Cancer, Ifeoluwa Togun Jan 2011

Examining The Role Of Need For Closure In Psychological Distress Following Genetic Testing For Breast Cancer, Ifeoluwa Togun

Psychology Dissertations - Archive

The present study investigated the relationship between Need for Closure (NFC) and psychological distress after receiving the results of genetic tests for breast cancer. One hundred and eight women recruited from the Cancer Genetics Program at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and Magee-Women's Hospital participated in the study. The women were assessed four times in all, once before receiving their test results (baseline) and three times after at one week, 3 months and 6 months. The results suggested that the testing situation itself does not lead to distress. Distress following genetic test results is related to an individual's attitude …

Results showed significant increases in VTA DA activity in the Metestrus and Male groups, no significant differences …

Generations: The Dividing Line Between Preferences For Leadership Styles, Alysia Annette Bransford Jan 2011

Generations: The Dividing Line Between Preferences For Leadership Styles, Alysia Annette Bransford

Psychology Theses - Archive

This research examined what effects the characteristics of the Millennial generation had on the preferences for leadership style by investigating which qualities in leaders were more highly valued within this generational cohort. The Millennial generations' (i.e., individuals born between 1980 and 2000) potential preferences towards four leadership styles (i.e., charismatic, ideological, pragmatic, and servant) versus that of non-Millennials (i.e., individuals born before 1980) were investigated. In addition, this study investigated how Millennials' locus of control affects their leader preference. Two 2 x 3 Mixed ANCOVAs were run to assess leadership preferences between the two generational groups. Multiple regressions were run …

Asynchronous Idea Generation, Runa Korde Jan 2011

Asynchronous Idea Generation, Runa Korde

Psychology Theses - Archive

The studies examined the role of providing review sessions during a brainstorming task. Participants were asked to generate ideas either as pair or individually. It was expected that participants who were provided time to review their own as well as their partners' ideas would generate more ideas than those who were not provided a separate review session. Additionally, it was expected that when the review session was provided, participants who generated ideas alone would perform better than those who generated ideas as a pair. Results of Study 1 supported these hypotheses. Study 2 was conducted to understand the factors that …

Heat Transfer In Triangular Ducts With Axial Conduction,Containing Porous Medium, Abhishek Banerjee Jan 2011

Heat Transfer In Triangular Ducts With Axial Conduction,Containing Porous Medium, Abhishek Banerjee

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

The objective of this study is to find a numerical solution for the velocity and temperature field in a duct of triangular cross-section area. A fully saturated porous medium is considered to be present in the duct. The study reports the contribution of axial conduction in heat transfer to flow passing through triangular porous passages. The terms in x-direction are retained in the energy equation due to the presence of axial conduction. Also, because of the geometrical asymmetry, non-orthogonal boundary conditions can exist and thus make the determination of heat transfer more difficult. The problem under consideration uses H2 boundary …

Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis Of Columns, Rajkiran Muppavarapu Jan 2011

Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis Of Columns, Rajkiran Muppavarapu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

In many engineering applications structural components are considered to be beams or columns subjected to a range of external loads such as dead weight, wind, temperature changes etc.In this work a mathematical model has been developed for a sports lighting tower considering it to be a cantilever beam with large deformation. The concept of non-linear P-Delta analysis is applied to the column. Using this model, a tower analysis tool was developed in MATLAB. Using this tool various design alternatives can be examined to evaluate their suitability to a particular task.A number of example problems from the available literature were solved …

Transatlantic Brinksmanship: The Anglo-American Alliance And Conservative Ideology, 1953-1956, David M. Watry Jan 2011

Transatlantic Brinksmanship: The Anglo-American Alliance And Conservative Ideology, 1953-1956, David M. Watry

History Dissertations - Archive

The purpose of this transatlantic dissertation is to produce a new post-revisionist history of Anglo-American relations from 1953 to 1956 that seriously re-assesses Eisenhower's "middle path" foreign policy and the differing responses to it from Churchill and Eden. This reexamination challenges the notion that Eisenhower's foreign policy represented a mere continuation of Truman's containment policy or a "middle path" between Democrats and far-right Republicans. Instead, Eisenhower intentionally adopted a distinctly far-right Republican foreign policy that overwhelmed two Conservative British prime ministers and accelerated the end of the British Empire. This transatlantic history argues that American foreign policy went from one …

Study Of The Response Of The Atlas Tile Calorimeter To Muons Produced In Sqrt(S) = 7 Tev Proton-Proton Collisions At The Lhc, Pierce Ben Weatherly

Physics Theses - Archive

The purpose of this study is to verify the inter-calibration of the cells and uniformity of the Tile Calorimeter (TileCal) detector in the ATLAS experiment at CERN. The response using muons produced in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)= 7 TeV is identified. Muons are efficient calibration tools because they are minimum ionizing particles that deposit nearly constant energy in the calorimeter for a wide range of particle energies. In this study, the tracks of the muons are extrapolated through the calorimeter, and their path lengths through TileCal cells are calculated. The energy, path length, and dE/dx response of the cells are …

Investigations In The Impact Of Visual Cognition And Spatial Ability Of Student Comprehension Of Physics And Space Science, Ximena Clara Cuicatl Cid Jan 2011

Investigations In The Impact Of Visual Cognition And Spatial Ability Of Student Comprehension Of Physics And Space Science, Ximena Clara Cuicatl Cid

Physics Dissertations - Archive

Physics and Space Science examine topics that are highly spatial in nature. Students are required to visualize a system, manipulate that system, and then solve a given problem. Doing all of this, simultaneously, can lead to a cognitive overload where the student is unable to correctly solve the problem. Some difficulties may be rooted in conceptual difficulties, whereas other difficulties may arise from issues with spatial intelligence and visual cognition. In some cases, students might have created an incorrect mental image of the problem to begin with, and it's this misconception, not the lack of content knowledge, that has caused …
