To gain insight into the patterns of genetic variation and evolutionary relationships within and between bonobos and chimpanzees, we sequenced 150,000 base pairs of nuclear DNA divided among 15 autosomal regions as well as the complete mitochondrial genomes from 20 bonobos and 58 chimpanzees. Except for western chimpanzees, we found poor genetic separation of chimpanzees based on sample locality. In contrast, bonobos consistently cluster together but fall as a group within the variation of chimpanzees for many of the regions. Thus, while chimpanzees retain genomic variation that predates bonobo-chimpanzee speciation, extensive lineage sorting has occurred within bonobos such that much …

A Randomised Controlled Trial Investigating The Effect Of Adding Fentanyl To Low Dose Bupivacaine In Combined Spinal-Epidural Anaesthesia, Using Epidural Volume Extension Technique In Caesarean Section, Mudola V. Manyano Jun 2011

A Randomised Controlled Trial Investigating The Effect Of Adding Fentanyl To Low Dose Bupivacaine In Combined Spinal-Epidural Anaesthesia, Using Epidural Volume Extension Technique In Caesarean Section, Mudola V. Manyano

Master of Medicine in Anaesthesiology

Background: Epidural volume extension (EVE), is a technique whereby a small-dose intrathecal block is enhanced by an epidural injection of physiological saline. This epidural injection exerts a compression effect on the dura, which then leads to a cranial increase in sensory spread of the intrathecal local anaesthetic. The lower dose of local anaesthetic required in the EVE technique has made it possible to avoid the side effects of the conventional dose of local anaesthetic while still having the benefit of adequate anaesthesia. Several studies have been conducted in this area; these studies have either used or omitted fentanyl. The successful …

The Law School Educational Technologist Survey – 2 Years Later, Debbie Ginsberg

Presentations

Presentation from the Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction 2011 Conference for Law School Computing

In the 2009 law school educational technology survey, we found that while law school educational technologists loved their jobs, the duties and expectations from school to school varied widely. In this session, we’ll explore whether, two years on, our job descriptions have become more standardized. What should law school faculty and staff expect when a law school hires an educational technologist?

We’ll also feature several current law school educational technologists who will showcase specialized projects and processes they’ve been able to bring to their law schools. …

Survey Says! Using Online Surveys To Get The Information And Resources You Need, Debbie Ginsberg

Presentations

Presentation from the Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction 2011 Conference for Law School Computing

Online surveys are great tools for soliciting customer service feedback, establishing priorities, and researching technology trends. But does the world really need another “how well do you like us” form? (A: No.) With a little planning, well-structured questions, and a targeted audience, you can create effective surveys to collect vital data for your work and research.

In this session, Debbie Ginsberg demonstrated:

  • Powerful but easy-to-use survey tools including Google Forms, SurveyMonkey, and Qualtrics
  • Best practices for designing surveys and creating survey questions
  • Ways to collect survey …

Carbon dioxide (CO2) present in exhaled air is the most important sensory cue for female blood-feeding mosquitoes, causing activation of long-distance host-seeking flight, navigation towards the vertebrate host 1 and, in the case of Aedes aegypti, increased sensitivity to skin odours2. The CO2 detection machinery is therefore an ideal target to disrupt host seeking. Here we use electrophysiological assays to identify a volatile odorant that causes an unusual, ultra-prolonged activation of CO2-detecting neurons in three major disease-transmitting mosquitoes: Anopheles gambiae, Culex quinquefasciatus and A. aegypti. Importantly, ultra-prolonged activation of these neurons severely compromises their ability subsequently to detect CO2 for …

A distinct feature of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the tendency of tumor cells to disperse throughout the liver. Nck family adaptor proteins function to couple tyrosine phosphorylation signals to regulate actin cytoskeletal reorganization that leads to cell motility. In order to explore the role of Nck in HCC development, we performed GST pull-down assay using the SH2 domain of Nck1 as bait. The resulting precipitates were separated by 2-DE. Mass spectrometry analysis revealed a group of Nck1 SH2 domain-binding proteins that were differentially expressed in HCC. One of these proteins, dermcidin (DCD), and its interaction with Nck1, was further validated …

In this article, we present a method that provides prompt detection of the presence of cancer cells inside the 2-mm margin of tissue surrounding the tumor after excision using spatially offset Raman spectroscopy (SORS). SORS was developed to detect subtle changes in soft tissue spectra in the 100–2000 μm range and tested on excised breast tissues. The results display a very high specificity and sensitivity (100% and 95%, respectively) of classification between positive and negative tumor margins. SORS is a clinically feasible method, suitable for the real-time, intraoperative assessment of tumor margins at the micrometer level.

Larval control is a major component in mosquito control programs. This study evaluated the wide-scale application of Bti/Bs biolarvicide (Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis [Bti] and Bacillus sphaericus [Bs]) in different aquatic habitats in urban and peri-urban Malindi, Kenya. This study was done from June 2006 to December 2007. The urban and peri-urban area of Malindi town was mapped and categorized in grid cells of 1 km2. A total of 16 1-km2 cells were selected based on presence Community Based Organization dealing with malaria control within the cells. Each of the 16 1-km2 cells was thoroughly searched for the presence of …

Though for a long time it was hypothesized that the extraordinary diversity of phytophagous insects was better explained by a synchronous pattern of co-diversification with plants, the results of recent studies have led to question this theory, suggesting that the diversification of insects occurred well after that of their hosts. In this study we address this issue by investigating the timing of diversification of a highly specialized group of seed beetles, which mostly feeds on legume plants from the tribe Indigofereae. To that purpose, a total of 130 specimens were sequenced for six genes and analyzed under a Bayesian phylogenetic …

A study was conducted to determine weight loss and moisture regain properties of silk cocoon shells, shell layers and degummed fibers of the four African wild silkmoths Anaphe panda, Argema mimosae, Epiphora bauhiniae and Gonometa postica and compare with the industry standard mulberry silkmoth, Bombyx mori. No. significant difference was observed between the moisture regain of the wild silk fibers after degumming. However, there were significant differences in weight loss and moisture regain between cocoon shells as well as shell layers. E. bauhiniae had the lowest weight loss and moisture regain of 23.19 and 5.64%, respectively while G. postica had …

In the shallow subsurface immediately below the land-atmosphere interface, it is widely recognized that the movement of water vapor is closely coupled to thermal processes. However, their mutual interactions are rarely considered in most soil water modeling efforts or in practical applications where it becomes necessary to understand the spatial and temporal distribution of soil moisture. The validation of numerical models that are designed to capture these processes is difficult due to the scarcity of field or laboratory data with accurately known hydraulic and thermal parameters of soils, limiting the testing and refinement of heat and water transfer theories. The …
