The Other Me: A Memoir, Suzanna Filip Aug 2011

The Other Me: A Memoir, Suzanna Filip

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

THE OTHER ME is the true story of what happens when, at 29, in the midst of my first year of marriage, I learn that my father has been cheating on my mother on and off for almost forty years; I am held at gunpoint, zip-tied, and forced to lie face down in a bed with my sister while a gang of contract hitmen attempt to kill her neighbor; and two weeks later, my husband of ten-and-a-half months tells me he thinks he would like to be with someone else, someone he's been seeing recently. THE OTHER ME follows my …

Social Context For Decision Making: The Presence And Role Of Advisors, Matthew Edward Jacovina Aug 2011

Social Context For Decision Making: The Presence And Role Of Advisors, Matthew Edward Jacovina

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Decision makers are often accompanied by other people who have the opportunity to act as advisors, creating a social context for their decisions. My project examined how the presence and role of advisors affect the behavior of decision makers, as well as the future behavior of the advisors. Participants played several rounds of a game based on the Monty Hall dilemma. In this game, Players initially chose one of three doors looking for a prize. Next, the computer eliminated one of the non-chosen doors. Finally, the Player chose to stay with the original door, or to switch to the other …

Evolvability In The Face Of Climate Change: The Effects Of Novel Genetic Variation On Phenotypic Integration And Plasticity To Elevated Carbon Dioxide In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Mark Jonas Aug 2011

Evolvability In The Face Of Climate Change: The Effects Of Novel Genetic Variation On Phenotypic Integration And Plasticity To Elevated Carbon Dioxide In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Mark Jonas

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Carbon dioxide is an important selective agent in the evolution of plants. The rapid increase in the concentration of atmospheric carbon has given considerable impetus to studies exploring the impact of elevated carbon dioxide (eCO2) on plant populations. While eCO2 has been shown to affect plants at multiple levels of biological organization--from gene expression to community structure--our understanding of plant evolutionary dynamics in eCO2 environments is limited. A key step in elucidating evolutionary responses is characterizing the effects of novel genetic variation on patterns of phenotypic plasticity and integration among ecologically relevant traits. This approach can provide insights into the …

Increased Neurotrophin-3 Expression Promotes The Metastatic Growth Of Breast Cancer Cells In The Brain, Elizabeth Angela Louie Aug 2011

Increased Neurotrophin-3 Expression Promotes The Metastatic Growth Of Breast Cancer Cells In The Brain, Elizabeth Angela Louie

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Nearly 20% of breast cancer patients with non-localized disease are eventually diagnosed with brain lesions, making breast cancer a main source of metastatic brain disease in women. The process of metastasis is highly specific, though the molecular basis for breast cancer metastasis to the brain remains unclear. A novel proteomic signature associated with breast cancer brain metastasis showed an association of the expression of neurotrophin-3 (NT-3), a growth factor, with brain-targeting metastatic breast cancer cell lines. To evaluate the importance of NT-3 in the ability of brain-targeting breast cancer cell lines to grow in the brain, I knocked down NT-3 …

Chromosome-Substituted Rat Strains Provide Insights Into The Genetics Of Placentation, Toshihiro Konno, Lea A. Rempel, M. A. Karim Rumi, Amanda R. Graham, Kazuo Asanoma, Stephen J. Renaud, Michael J. Soares Aug 2011

Chromosome-Substituted Rat Strains Provide Insights Into The Genetics Of Placentation, Toshihiro Konno, Lea A. Rempel, M. A. Karim Rumi, Amanda R. Graham, Kazuo Asanoma, Stephen J. Renaud, Michael J. Soares

Paediatrics Publications

The rat possesses a hemochorial form of placentation. Pronounced intrauterine trophoblast cell invasion and vascular remodeling characterize this type of placentation. Strain-specific patterns of placentation are evident in the rat. Some rat strains exhibit deep intrauterine trophoblast invasion and an expanded junctional zone [Holtzman Sprague-Dawley (HSD), Dahl salt sensitive (DSS)], whereas placentation sites of other rat strains are characterized by shallow invasion and a restricted junctional zone [Brown Norway (BN)]. In this report, we identified a quantitative trait that was used to distinguish strain-specific features of rat placentation. Junctional zone prolactin family 5, subfamily a, member 1 (Prl5a1) transcript levels …

Decorin Is A Novel Vegfr-2-Binding Antagonist For The Human Extravillous Trophoblast, Gausal A. Khan, Gannareddy V. Girish, Neena Lala, Gianni M. Di Guglielmo, Peeyush K. Lala Aug 2011

Decorin Is A Novel Vegfr-2-Binding Antagonist For The Human Extravillous Trophoblast, Gausal A. Khan, Gannareddy V. Girish, Neena Lala, Gianni M. Di Guglielmo, Peeyush K. Lala

Paediatrics Publications

Extravillous trophoblasts (EVT) of the human placenta invade the uterine decidua and its arteries to ensure successful placentation. We previously identified two decidua-derived molecules, TGF-β and a TGF-β-binding proteoglycan decorin (DCN), as negative regulators of EVT proliferation, migration, and invasiveness and reported that DCN acts via multiple tyrosine kinase receptors [epidermal growth factor-receptor (EGF-R), IGF receptor-1 (IGFR1), and vascular endothelial growth factor 2 receptor (VEGFR-2)]. Because binding of DCN toVEGFR-2 has never been reported earlier, present study explored this binding, the approximate location of VEGFR-2-binding site in DCN, and its functional role in our human first trimester EVT cell line …

Understudied Species In Coastal U.S. Waters: Issues, Solutions, And Implications For Ecosystem-Based Fishery Management, Anna Webb Aug 2011

Understudied Species In Coastal U.S. Waters: Issues, Solutions, And Implications For Ecosystem-Based Fishery Management, Anna Webb

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Production of valuable marine resources is threatened by chronic underestimation of fisheries impacts. Over-exploitation has caused a decline in many traditional food fish and enabled replacement by historically undervalued species. I analyzed federal survey data to identify understudied species encountered by trawl fishing gear and found the majority of captured species lack population assessments and/or catch regulations. There are substantially higher total numbers of encountered species and, in turn, higher percentages of understudied species (up to 95%) in the southern regions potentially following the latitudinal biodiversity gradient. This critical gap in understanding coastal marine ecosystems, which will be more significant …

Moderate Seizures Damage Hippocampal Neurons But Do Not Affect Function In An Animal Model Of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, Shayri Jevonne Greenwood Aug 2011

Moderate Seizures Damage Hippocampal Neurons But Do Not Affect Function In An Animal Model Of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, Shayri Jevonne Greenwood

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by repetitive seizures. Seizures originating from the parahippocampal region reflect continuous neuronal overexcitation that can lead to subsequent cell loss in the hippocampus. In epilepsy, prolonged generalized seizures (i.e. your wordsstatus epilepticus, SE) are rare, yet remain the focus of studies in animal models. More often, seizures are focal and partial, as well as acute rather than prolonged. These moderate seizures can be studied in animal models allowing characterization of the damage and functional deficits. The studies conducted aimed to identify the impact moderate seizures have on brain integrity and cognitive function by …

A Melodramatic Miracle: The Telenovela In The Making Of Mexican Politics And Culture, 1950-1980, Melixa Abad Izquierdo Aug 2011

A Melodramatic Miracle: The Telenovela In The Making Of Mexican Politics And Culture, 1950-1980, Melixa Abad Izquierdo

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

My dissertation examines the relationship between politics and popular culture in post-revolutionary Mexico. The television industry is often dismissed as an evil empire that was at all times allied with the interests of the one party state system: the Institutional Revolution Party (PRI) that ruled Mexico from 1929 to 2000. A parallel perspective later influenced negative perceptions of cultural productions such as telenovelas (Mexican soap operas). However, my work suggests a far more complicated cultural and political reality. My study examines telenovelas not as mere mindless conservative entertainment, but as a cultural industry product from a period when the realities …

The Effects Of Seasonality On Reproductive Skew And Mortality, Jan Frederik Gogarten Aug 2011

The Effects Of Seasonality On Reproductive Skew And Mortality, Jan Frederik Gogarten

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Primate habitats differ in the degree to which their environments are seasonal. Here I examine how differences in seasonality impact two key aspects of primate life history and fitness; the distribution of male reproductive success across members of a group and mortality patterns. Among non-human primates, the ability of a male to monopolize fertilizations within a group appears to be primarily affected by the number of males in the group and the degree to which receptivity is synchronous in females. These factors have both been assumed to depend on the length of the breeding season (i.e. reproductive seasonality), with shorter …

Homo Politicus: On Politics And Passion, Matthew Mahler Aug 2011

Homo Politicus: On Politics And Passion, Matthew Mahler

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Based on over two year's worth of ethnographic research, this dissertation seeks to identify the specific sensibilities and forms of skillful coping that politicos develop through their immersion in the universe of politics, and which characterize them as competent political agents. Rather than any one thing or set of things that politicos learn, it argues that these competencies exist in the holistic way in which politicos come to engage with or be involved with the political universe and its overarching regularities. More specifically, it argues that in the guise of a high-powered factor analysis there are three basic ground-level preconceptual …

Ugly People Having Sex, Joseph Van Scoy Aug 2011

Ugly People Having Sex, Joseph Van Scoy

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Ugly People Having Sex is a collection of short stories. An early 20th century southern town turns upside down when they try to make amends with their oppressed. A hurricane forces the collision of two types of people better kept apart. An octogenarian Don Juan escapes a nursing home for a chance at redemption. Each tale explores aspects of our society most make every effort to ignore--the abused, the disadvantaged, and our very selves.

Essays On Price Setting, Olena Rarytska Aug 2011

Essays On Price Setting, Olena Rarytska

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation consists of two applied studies of price formation. In the first chapter of this dissertation I study the bidding strategies in on-line auctions, under assumption that bidders are asymmetric. In the analysis I use the unique data set of the used notebooks auctions. In my data set one can distinguish several types of bidders according to their bidding activity: some bidders participate repeatedly even after winning one or more items, while others stop actively participating in the auctions after winning one item or even without succeeding. Frequent auction participants may buy items for resale purposes, while occasional buyers …

Patterns And Consequences Of Supreme Court Decision Making On Federalism Cases, Christopher Maier Parker Aug 2011

Patterns And Consequences Of Supreme Court Decision Making On Federalism Cases, Christopher Maier Parker

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The efforts to curb Congressional power throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s by the Rehnquist Court have brought the issue of federalism back into discussion in political debate. The so-called Federalism Revolution has sparked debate regarding the motivation for this change in Court behavior. Scholars have developed competing theories describing the voting as based in legal considerations, influenced by institutional factors, and ideologically driven. However, much of the research has involved quantitative analyses of small samples of cases. This dissertation seeks to fill a void by employing a comprehensive statistical analysis of individual justice votes in federalism cases from …

Horizontalism In Argentina: From Ruptures To Revolutionary Landscapes, Marina Aline Sitrin Aug 2011

Horizontalism In Argentina: From Ruptures To Revolutionary Landscapes, Marina Aline Sitrin

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Title: Horizontalism in Argentina: From Ruptures to Revolutionary Landscapes Marina Aline Sitrin Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology at Stony Brook University 2011 Throughout history and around the world, there are moments, such as the popular rebellion of the 19th and 20th of December 2001 in Argentina, when the ways in which people see things drastically changes, when something occurs that allows alternative ways of seeing and being - creating rupture and opening cracks in history. This dissertation addresses what happens in the wake of this rupture, and how the often inspiring moments which emerge in that space can become longer …

Adam10 And Adam17 Regulate Various Stages Of Pancreatic Disease, Christine Marie Ardito Aug 2011

Adam10 And Adam17 Regulate Various Stages Of Pancreatic Disease, Christine Marie Ardito

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The almost universal lethality of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) has led to intense study to identify the genetic mutations and molecular abnormalities responsible for its formation and progression. The initiation of PDA is definitively linked to activating mutations in the KRAS oncogene. However, PDA mouse models show that universal pancreatic expression of mutant KRas alone is insufficient to initiate tumorigenesis, and requires secondary events, such as tissue damage or changes in molecular signaling pathways, to augment its transformation potential. Our lab studies how chronic inflammation, with or without oncogenic KRas, contributes to tumor formation by the epithelial changes it induces …

The Dumas Puzzle: The 150-Year Problem To Fit A Biracial Icon Into The French Pantheon, Eric Martone Aug 2011

The Dumas Puzzle: The 150-Year Problem To Fit A Biracial Icon Into The French Pantheon, Eric Martone

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Alexandre Dumas, writer of The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, was among the most famous nineteenth-century French writers. He was descended from a Norman noble and a black slave from Saint Domingue. Newspaper articles, memoirs, anecdotes, and Dumas's own reflections reveal contemporaries' difficulties in reconciling his black ancestry with his Frenchness. Consequently, they often rejected Dumas as being fully French. Such reactions revealed the asymmetry between the French cultural and political nations, which became more complex within the specific context of French universalism. This difficulty in reconciling Dumas's biraciality was a local variation of a wider Western …

Graduate Students’ Teaching Experiences Improve Their Methodological Research Skills, David F. Feldon, James Peugh, Briana E. Timmerman, Michelle A. Maher, Melissa Hurst, Denise Strickland, Joanna A. Gilmore, Cindy Stiegelmeyer

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduate students are often encouraged to maximize their engagement with supervised research and minimize teaching obligations. However, the process of teaching students engaged in inquiry provides practice in the application of important research skills. Using a performance rubric, we compared the quality of methodological skills demonstrated in written research proposals for two groups of early career graduate students (those with both teaching and research responsibilities and those with only research responsibilities) at the beginning and end of an academic year. After statistically controlling for preexisting differences between groups, students who both taught and conducted …

Host Plant Resistance Among Tomato Accessions To The Spider Mite Tetranychus Evansi In Kenya, G. K. Onyambus, R. O. Maranga, L. M. Gitonga, M. Knapp

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The spider mite Tetranychus evansi has a broad range of host plants. Control of T. evansi has been a big challenge to tomato farmers due to its fast rate of reproduction, development of resistance to chemical pesticides and its ability to use weeds as alternative hosts when the tomato plants are not available. The aim of the current study was to determine the host plant acceptance and the relative contributions of trichomes in the control of the red spider mite by comparing the survival, development and oviposition rates of the red spider mite on eight tomato accessions. Leaflets from eight …
