Using High Intensity Ultrasound As A Tool To Change The Functional Properties Of Interesterified Soybean Oil, Yubin Ye, Ashwini Wagh, Silvana Martini
Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications
High intensity ultrasound (HIU) was used to change the crystallization behavior, generate small crystals, and improve the texture of a low saturated shortening (interesterified soybean oil). Samples were crystallized at different temperatures (26, 28, 30, and 32 °C) without and with the application of HIU. Different acoustic power levels (110, 72, 61, 54, and 44 W) were used. Results show that higher acoustic powers had a greater effect on crystal size reduction, induced crystallization, and generated harder, more elastic and viscous materials. These effects were more significant when HIU was applied in the presence of crystals and when the sample …

The Wilderness Act, Prohibited Uses, And Exceptions: How Much Manipulation Of Wilderness Is Too Much, Gorden Steinhoff
The Wilderness Act, Prohibited Uses, And Exceptions: How Much Manipulation Of Wilderness Is Too Much, Gorden Steinhoff
Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
The Wilderness Act of 1964 prohibits a number of uses in federally designated wilderness areas. In accordance with the Act, there shall be no permanent or temporary roads, no use of motor vehicles, motorized equipment, landing of aircraft, or placement of structures or installations. The Act includes an important clause that allows exceptions. The Act states that temporary roads, motor vehicles, structures and installations, etc., are prohibited “except as necessary to meet minimum requirements for the administration of the area for the purpose of this Act.” As will be discussed, this obscure clause has been widely misinterpreted by federal agencies …
Sources Of Gaseous Oxidized Mercury And Mercury Dry Deposition At Two Southeastern U.S. Sites, Peter S. Weiss-Penzias, Mae S. Gustin, Seth N. Lyman
Sources Of Gaseous Oxidized Mercury And Mercury Dry Deposition At Two Southeastern U.S. Sites, Peter S. Weiss-Penzias, Mae S. Gustin, Seth N. Lyman
USU Uintah Basin Faculty Publications
Wet deposition measurements have shown that relative to other parts of the US, the southeastern region has the highest mercury (Hg) inputs. The source of this Hg has been investigated by multiple researchers and is suggested to be derived from local, regional and global sources. Here we focus on trying to understand potential sources of Hg to this area during periods dominated by dry gaseous oxidized mercury (GOM) deposition. Dry deposition of GOM to a surrogate surface was measured in conjunction with speciated atmospheric Hg, and ancillary parameters from September 2007 through September 2008 at two sites located within 25 …
Vegetation And The Importance Of Insecticide-Treated Target Siting For Control Of Glossina Fuscipes Fuscipes, Johan Esterhuizen, Basilio Njiru, Glyn A. Vale, Michael J. Lehane, Stephen J. Torr
Vegetation And The Importance Of Insecticide-Treated Target Siting For Control Of Glossina Fuscipes Fuscipes, Johan Esterhuizen, Basilio Njiru, Glyn A. Vale, Michael J. Lehane, Stephen J. Torr
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Control of tsetse flies using insecticide-treated targets is often hampered by vegetation re-growth and encroachment which obscures a target and renders it less effective. Potentially this is of particular concern for the newly developed small targets (0.25 high × 0.5 m wide) which show promise for cost-efficient control of Palpalis group tsetse flies. Consequently the performance of a small target was investigated for Glossina fuscipes fuscipes in Kenya, when the target was obscured following the placement of vegetation to simulate various degrees of natural bush encroachment. Catches decreased significantly only when the target was obscured by more than 80%. Even …
Campers Have A World Of Good: Insights From The Aca Sites, Facilities, And Programs Report: 2011, Mark F. Roark, Marissa Mikami
Campers Have A World Of Good: Insights From The Aca Sites, Facilities, And Programs Report: 2011, Mark F. Roark, Marissa Mikami
Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications
Each year, camp staff members spend days — if not weeks — preparing facilities, activity areas, and programs so their campers can enjoy fun, educational, and life-enhancing experiences. Whether operating on a public grassy field or nestled in the woods, one key to successes is knowing about programs and facilities. Every three years, ACA conducts the Sites, Facilities, and Program Survey (SFPS) as a part of the larger, annually conducted business operations surveys. This article focuses on the SFPS completed during the fall of 2010. Fifty percent of ACA-accredited camps were randomly selected to participate in the survey and 539 …

Anticipating The Next Crisis, What Can Early Warning Systems Be Expected To Deliver? : A Review., Dakup D. Koplama
Economic and Financial Review
The paper attempts to rekindle the interest of policymakers and the general public towards having early warning systems (EWS) that would anticipate future financial crisis. The authors highlighted how the systems would realistically sound alarms and their effectiveness in various economies.
The 2007 Rift Valley Fever Outbreak In Sudan, Osama Ahmed Hassan, Clas Ahlm, Rosemary Sang, Magnus Evander
The 2007 Rift Valley Fever Outbreak In Sudan, Osama Ahmed Hassan, Clas Ahlm, Rosemary Sang, Magnus Evander
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a neglected, emerging, mosquito-borne disease with severe negative impact on human and animal health and economy. RVF is caused by RVF virus (RVFV) affecting humans and a wide range of animals. The virus is transmitted through bites from mosquitoes and exposure to viremic blood, body fluids, or tissues of infected animals. During 2007 a large RVF outbreak occurred in Sudan with a total of 747 confirmed human cases including 230 deaths (case fatality 30.8%); although it has been estimated 75,000 were infected. It was most severe in White Nile, El Gezira, and Sennar states near …
